I've lived in Norwich for a very long time John, but your wonderful videos show me a Norwich that I never knew existed and as I walk around, I see it with new eyes. Thank you so much.
My Dad lived in Leopold Close in the 1950's and as a small boy attended Unthank Collage on Newmarket Road ,located between Daniels Road and Leopold Road .The headmaster was a chap called Dudley Miller. Also in Eaton Village there was a sweet shop named Otterways .
Superb video, John. I attended Town Close school between 1987 - 1993 and spent many days walking up the Newmarket road to get to the playing fields. I was always fascinated by the many different styles of houses. There really is so much history in this part of the city.
Another great video! I was just thinking in a 100 years won't it be cool is someone used your videos and pictures to show how it looks now to how it will look in 2124 ! Pretty cool to think of X
Thanks very much for the video. I lived in Poplar Avenue, just off the Newmarket Road from 1943-1945. I was quite young then! Google maps still refuse to cover it. I remember a unit of US tanks taking a wrong turning into the cul-de-sac. The commander thought he was turning into Bluebell Road. They are had to go into reverse! It all quite frightened me. More memories, but for another day.
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich Thanks John...nice to know when you publish. Dave, do you walk or drive to compare the route after you have watched the video ? I wish I was young enough to be able to walk and take it all in ! 😅
@@MrJohn768 I walk depending on where it is, my wife and I are walkers so walk whenever we can. I have just had a knee replacement, so it has limited me a bit.
@davegoldsmith4020 I am the same age and I love to walk 🚶♀️🚶♂️ although I have a serious operation too...but here we go ....chin up and carry on regardless!! We have our good friend here to give all this wonderful information about things to keep us informed..Thanks John 👍
I was looking forward to seeing this one, particularly as I did the long walk too! Newmarket Road has kept much of its historical tree-lined identity, which is lovely except for the abundance of trees making it very difficult to find the houses we were searching for! Oh dear, the village sign! They were obviously struggling for ideas! Btw, I didn't hear any buzzing on my laptop but you should perhaps consider seeking advice about improving the quality of the sound. I know we need to improve our sound quality when we go out and about. A very enjoyable video, well-researched and presented. Thank you!
Thank you for your comment, and your help in putting this video together. Yes, the explanation behind the village sign leaves something to be desired! Sound wise, I can only think of upgrading the microphone, but I'll try a few tweaks before doing that!
I use to live on Eaton Street opposite the delivery entrance for Roy's/waitrose. A bit noisy at time about it was a nice place. It was even better when there was a bakery in the row of shops 😂
I lived over the other side of the bridge on Intwood Road. The enemy! Haha But that row of shops was great, Ron Greens for sweats, comics and stink bombs, Miles Bikes to get you bike sorted, the bakery for all kinds of goodness and the original Chinese take away too. And the cut through from the Red Lion car park into Roys, the department store, the ciggy shop, the chenmist and the supermarket.
Does any one remember the lorry that turned over at Notcutts round about full of cans of beer, i use to live in Leopold road and we were upto our usual shenanigans when suddenly we saw my mates dad clearing out the back of his cortina estate just chucking the contents in the front garden, my mate was like dad what are you doing, his dad said jump in an come with me, a short run down the road and there it was cans everywhere people rushing in and grabbing as many as they could carry, needless to say we assisted his dad in filling up the back of his estate.
Super stuff as always John. Not strictly related to the content, but I was struck by the NCFC kit (@2:11). Some players have left side blue and others right side blue on their tops. Is this genuine or just an artefact of the colourization, does anybody know?
That's very interesting (and observant!) Wikipedia makes reference to this, but doesn't offer any explanation. My explanation for what it's worth - some platers were wearing their shirts inside out!

That's quite a walk along main roads! It's a very interesting area.
Thank you John for all your time and effort. Newmarket rd and Eaton still seem to retain their historical look.
Thank you Martin. Yes you're right, there haven't been very many changes....but I still couldn't find that house in the snow!
I used to go fishing under Cringleford bridge. We'd paddle under the bridge to get to the other side which was always private land.
Thanks for sharing your memories. It all helps to create a fuller picture for viewers who read the comments.

It would be lovely to think of such a thing happening - maybe by that time they could convert it to three dimensions!
Excellent informative video as ever John. You have a knack of finding some amazing archive photos - ! 😊
Thank you Simon - there are some good ones aren't there. I doubt those sheep would survive in the present day!
Always amazing videos!
Glad you like them!
Good News!
Another Lost Norwich video.
Thanks John.

I liked the old Images John of what is now for many just a route out of Norwich. Hope you enjoyed your Walk, looking forward to the next Video.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, a bakery there must have been very convenient!
@JohnAtkinsLostNorwich it was. I think that was the first place I had seen or tried the bacon&cheese puffs. They were lovely from there.
Can't beat local bakers!
