Sony A84L/A80L BRAVIA XR OLED TV Review - COMPARED to LG C3, Samsung QD-OLED & LG G3

    The Sony A84L/A80L is a solid OLED TV that offers excellent image quality, a unique 3.2 Acoustic Surface Audio+ technology where the screen becomes the speaker, two HDMI 2.1 inputs with support for 4K/120, VRR, and ALLM, along with a decent input lag of 16.3ms.
    It uses an LGD-supplied WRGB OLED panel and not a QD-OLED model, plus, it doesn’t feature a heatsink for extra brightness or MLA technology, but that doesn’t mean it can’t produce excellent calibrated images, inky blacks and decent dynamic range.
    It is an impressive mid-range model that offers superb video processing, accurate calibrated images, natural-looking skin tones and colours, along with very good motion. There are a few small issues for the A84L which revolve around the slightly better-specified and cheaper competition from the likes of LG C3 which offers very similar performance and better out-of-the-box accuracy, but the Sony A84L/A80L offers enough to warrant a recommendation.
    The good
    Decent calibrated SDR performance and accuracy
    Very good HDR10 and Dolby Vision performance
    Cognitive Processor XR image quality
    Excellent video upscaling and processing
    Very good motion with film and 50Hz TV show content
    Auto Calibration with Calman AutoCal
    Great sound quality from Acoustic Surface Audio+ for everyday TV viewing
    Google TV is stable and fast
    TV stand options
    Great build quality
    The not so good
    Custom Mode is not accurate out of the box (No Filmmaker Mode)
    Lacks brightness in HDR compared to rivals
    Cyan tint to images in Custom Mode
    Only two HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps) inputs
    We use Portrait Displays’ Calman colour calibration software (www.portrait.com) a Murideo Seven Generator and a Klein K-10A meter profiled to a JETI Spectraval 1511-HiRes spectroradiometer for measurement and calibration.

    Thanks for the review! Both Oleds, just like the panel from the previous year, like the C2, has a slight magenta tint on the far right of the panel, very noticeable at any scene with snow. I guess its on all oled panels due to the fact that companies sent the best panels for review.

So had to go Sony again got this as OLED and gets great reviews the A95L is not worth the extra £900 when I looked at them even if it's better not £900 better. Also had alot of trouble over the years with samsung products build quality never samsung.

    What’s it like compared to Sony a80k and lg c2

    • @avforums
      @avforums  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Almost identical to the A80K and you can see that comparing the test results, as I say in the review. The C2 is almost identical to the C3 so you can use that comparison and check out the C3 review to see how it compares to the C2.

    Finally you guys have moved the barr for WRGB. Honestly though you guys have been rating these oleds too highly for too long, everything 9/10 when HDR has for the most part been flat, red and greens off and aggressive abl.

    • @DeesBees85
      @DeesBees85 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The ABL isn’t aggressive at all on the recent LGs. I own a C2 and have never once noticed abl in action. By all measurements the C3/G3 are even less aggressive with it. Ironically I’ve seen many reports of abl being very noticeable on the QD-OLEDs from Samsung and Sony, and on their models you don’t even get settings allowing you to minimize it.

    • @lancealex382
      @lancealex382 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DeesBees85 I can only imagine you're one of the lucky few who either isn't sensitive to it or has never had a high-end led TV to compare it too.ndo you max the backlight or are you used to a darker overall image? Here's a tester for you. Play any scene with a big explosion. You'll see that rich deep orange fake on a grey hue almost immediately and the bright orange changes to a dull tangerine shade. Or go to any scene where theres a lot of white or blue and again, see how dark the sky blue turns and how grey the white goes. Now watch those same scenes on a good led.

    You have to do a lot of calibration with LG. Sony has out of the box calibration. For him to say LG is more accurate out of the box is a lie, and knows better as a calibrator.

    Comparing Samsong Premium level QD TV to Sony‘s entry lower level a84l is not a fair comparison at all
    Also, comparing LGG3 premium TV to Sony‘s entry level TV is not a good comparison as well
    Also, you guys have to remember that Sony doesn’t focus on trying to be the brightest like Samsung and LG. They focus on trying to keep the most accurate picture quality.

    How about reviewing Sony support, Samsung support etc, and how they deal with problems with TVs when the do occur? Support is rarely something you or indeed any reviewers touch on in any TV review, but not sure why? I'm about to buy a new TV and have narrowed it down to a few mid-range OLEDs, but when you look at Trustpilot etc, Samsung, Sony etc consistently get truly awful ratings and reviews. You could look at e.g. how easy it is to find their contact details, returns policies, how they respond to a claim, wait times on the phone, look into turnaround, what their guarantees do and don't include. It's probably fair to say, they all need to raise their game and they are all taking advantage of the weak consumer protection laws in this country (compare to EG New Zealand etc) but it would be nice to see reviewers take this part of buying more seriously.

      I heard Sony was good, the repair guy who "fixed" ( still not fixed ater 3 panel changes , a new main board and new LVDS cables) said LG was the best to deal with
      yeah they may be good to deal with but the QA is crap , my C1 was broekn out of the box and LG keeps replacing parts but it has been broken since day one and it still is after 4 service calls ,it was "fixed" again today and it's still broken despite every part expcept the power board being replaced and the panel being replaced 3 times already in not even 400 hours of use, I would not buy an OLED if I were you and I would also atay away from anyhting running web OS it's a garbage fire
