Hey y'all, i'm pinning this comment here as a reminder that just because I don't like something doesn't mean that something in this video has no merit. It is ok if the christmas tree closet strikes me as an example of overconsumption that an influencer is showcasing to her viewers, but does not strike you in the same way. If romanticizing your life makes enjoying your holiday/december season more enjoyable go for it. If you want a christmas tree closet in your home, go for it. If you and your friend group enjoy crafting do it! The commentary in this video was meant to address the overconsumption around christmas AND the pressures around the season. The pressures to buy more stuff, spend time with friends or family in ways that involve spending money (or buying stuff), setting unrealistic expectations, etc. Lastly, I think I may have been the one who lost the plot with the romanticizing tiktoks near the end. Although I wanted to make a comment about setting expectations for the season, they weren't really overconusmption related and I understand how some of y'all felt like this was too much! I understand if you feel like this one missed the mark.
@@shawnaripari thank you for understanding- I was influenced by one thing here - not gonna lie. The hot chocolate. I’ll maybe make one tonight while I make Christmas cookies. These TikToks were more participatory than overconsuming. I think one of the biggest reasons people overconsume and hoard - is because they are not actively participating in life. Happy Holidays🌲
I saw a video on TikTok do an “opposite advent calendar” which is decluttering an item from your house each day. I’m trying it this year and it’s really been great. It’s really made me feel grateful for the things I have and makes room for possible Christmas gifts.
@@ItsRainingCuteness this is a great idea! I'm trying to refresh my space a bit and a little declutter would help a lot (though I have nowhere near the amount of stuff that these overconsumption influencers have)
Lol except every time you tried to open it your game would crash and all your Sims would get -100 relationship with their children and also start trying to date the dog
Right but then they can’t use it to exploit their creator network & funnel people to the LIMITED TIME LAST CHANCE sales (that happen monthly) on EA App. Why have actual players when you can just sell broken packs and advertise useless merch! Okay sorry I sound bitter but its just like the waste of human and physical resources used on this DIGITAL product is wild to me as a simmer😅
I was not prepared for how aggressively BEIGE that snowboarding outfit would be. It's the exact shade of a great value band-aid. Wear neon so snow patrol can find you!
Exactly my thoughts. First, that is a ridiculously ugly color that will look horrible on most people. Second, no one is going to find you when you wipe out. It's also why I hate white ski sets.
I work in a very high poverty/ high need elementary school. There are literally kids that I work with who do not have homes and have temporary living situations in hotel rooms. It frustrates me that so many people have too much while others can’t even meet their basic needs. In my own life, I’m actively trying to be more mindful about being grateful for what I have and to give back to others who have less when I can.
I’m a teacher in a similar school. I always hate the week after Christmas because a handful of kids get a PS5 or VR headset from Santa, while others got a pair of socks. This is why Santa only brings one small gift for each of our girls - this year it’s a small set of the Little People toys - and any more expensive gifts are from mommy and daddy.
It breaks my heart. I make toy baskets up for children in similar circumstances. It’s not much for me but could put a smile of a kids face. I’ve focused on teens this year.
@@lspbeautea4791 I love that you do that! It seems to me more of an out of sight out of mind situation for most people because they don’t come in direct contact with people struggling with poverty, but there’s so many little ways to help those in need and it not only makes others feel good but it makes you feel good too!
Several of my friends are store managers or franchisee corp execs (in a very rural place- not like high powered execs) for a chain restaurant. I have helped out with quite a few Christmasses, not for the staff, but because we found out that high school employees were covering sibling Christmas. And every single time, gently used items were gladly & gratefully taken with tearful thank yous. Working nearly full time to cover expenses, trying to provide for 2-4 littler kids.
im pro wishlists when it comes to people you’re very very close with!! it minimizes keeping gifts you don’t want out of guilt, wasting the resources it takes to make the gift, wasting money, and removes the hassle of returning items. that being said we do have surprise gifts, we just dont get surprised with things like clothes, skincare/makeup, or accessories
@@beanybean000 i agree. some people think it’s boring, but i would much rather buy someone something that i know they want/need instead of just guessing
This year my aunt said I don't want to get you just any chachkie or things you don't need for your birthday. I am going to Kohl's tomorrow. What do you need? I said I really need pjs. I wear mine to death, and most of them have no elastic left in the waist and fall. I could also use a nice pair of sweat pants with pockets to wear to Bingo and a sweatshirt. Any ONE of those would be great. I got 2 pairs of pjs. That was in October. For Christmas I got a very nice yet comfortable pair of sweatpants and a super soft sweat shirt for Christmas. I love it all and use it all. It was easy for her and she is happy that I love and use my gifts. Money well spent.
I give my family a “gift guide” every year. The opening of it is a disclaimer that I do not expect any gifts from them but should they be looking to buy me a gift here are some things that I’ve wanted throughout the year that I have not purchased for myself. They are also welcome to purchase me whatever they want it doesn’t need to be on the list.
Honestly same here. Sometimes gift giving is also outsourcing the picking and choosing to someone else. E.g. my mom has needed a new smartphone for years and asked my dad to pick it out. She isn't very knowledgeable about technology and he is an electricial engineer. It's just helpful to sometimes say "I need general thing that does X" and have someone who really knows their stuff, whether it's fashion, cooking, electronics and so on get you something of good quality that will keep. My mom's phone from before lasted for almost 15 years and was picked the same way.
I saw that someone had said that the colors of the Skims/Northface is VERY unsafe in the event that you get stranded somewhere on the mountain. Thats why ski/snowboard clothes are bright colored. So that rescue people can find you!
My family has a "Christmas closet" (more like a holidays closet, halloween, christmas etc) but we have years and years of passed down decor that gets put up yearly. So I understand people who have tons of decor and go all out for the holidays. But that tiktok just kinda has this vibe that she wanted to simply show off her big ass house that she could afford her mirror doors.
I think it's the display room aspect. Even though it's "hidden" nehind the closed mirror door, everything in that room is relatively out in the open instead of packed up. Which could make decoration time and cleanup time faster, but also means you either have to dust anything that wasn't boxed up (which appears to be all of it) or you have to be going in there regularly during the rest of the year and cleaning...so ultimately it doesn't really save you any time at all.
I’m autistic and wishlists are a bigs thing for me. I’m extremely particular with things so I make curated lists of things I like to avoid ending up with something I won’t use. It also makes it far easier for my family to buy me things. Plus I use these wishlists for my birthday as well as Christmas, and I build it throughout the year with things I want but wouldn’t buy for myself whether it’s out of my price range or I don’t need it anytime soon but I want it. So by the time Christmas or my birthday comes around the items have been in my wishlist for awhile so it’s easy to see if I really do want them after the adrenaline of finding it has worn off
@@kararookie I second this as someone who is also autistic, I keep a running wishlist of things I want year round which a.) comes in handy if my family doesn't know what to get me (I'm not too particular but I like gifts to be something I'll actually use) b.) it keeps me from buying something I don't need sometimes because I'll add it to my list and when I come back later I'll decide actually don't want it anymore
When my kids were younger/Santa aged, I introduced the concept of a "big year". Every kid would, at some point, have a big year. Not every year could be a big year. My eldest had a big year (and I thought this up) because I found like 200 skylanders on FB marketplace which was something I could in no way afford.
Every year we do three Christmas presents like the Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh from the original story. One thing that’s nice, one thing thats good their brain and one thing that’s good for their body. My kids love it, but we are a Christian family so it’s a big part of the holiday for us.
But also like: how can she/her kids even think of so many things they want. I struggled every year to tell my mom five things I would want, same for my birthday (except for books). My sister is the same. I am now an adult but my parents still want to get me something. I wished for a blender this year because mine broke and my mom begged me to think of a second wish to not only gift me some household item and I had to think for two weeks and still don’t know. Of course there are things I would buy for myself if I had unlimited money, but they are all more expensive (because I tend to now invest in more quality items) to ask anyone to buy them for me.
to be honest, I only feel good about a purchase when it is "lived-in." buying and buying and buying feels so empty because it is empty! you're meant to use the things you buy - and buying new Christmas decor every single year seems so wasteful and lifeless.
For some reason, I get attached to my stuff. I love what I own so there is no way I could use it a few times and throw it away. It is sad when people only value and like things when they are new.
My family has us make pretty long wish lists, not because we’re going to get 20 gifts but that way the giver still gets to choose a gift out of things they know you want, and the receiver is still surprised and excited about the contents
@ it works really well for us! My brother and I have small apartments and we’re all trying to accumulate less stuff, so it makes the most sense to buy people things you know won’t just take up space and will actually get used. Of course we still give/gift things not on the list, but its a good guide. I did say no body care or makeup please I need to use what I have
SAME!!! I got mine for £20 on eBay and my wife-to-be hemmed it for me at home. Cannot imagine spending that much especially as my wedding dress no longer fits me 😂 So even if I wanted to wear it again I couldn't, and I'm okay with keeping it as a sentimental item.
Buying gifts for other people is the one area I’m very tempted to overspend. To combat this, this year my husband and I made a limit for how much we can spend on each person. Doing this has actually improved the experience because it really forces us to think outside the box and consider whether the person really needs/wants the gift before purchasing. As a result, we have come up with better/more creative gifts while staying within our budget. 😁
Literally one of the worst cases of FOMO I've ever seen. She was acting like me at 14 when I was OBSESSED with Harry Potter and Mom wouldn't buy me the millionth magazine talking about it lol
17 gifts at Christmas would have been my personal nightmare as a kid 😂 i've always been one of these people feeling very uncomfortable when having to open a gift in front of the person who offered it to me because i always felt i was not displaying enough joy or the right emotions for the satisfaction of the gift giver, opening 17 gifts would have make me feel so self conscious during the process 😂
If kids get so many gifts they can't truly be happy with them as there is so many there be always those one of two that he special rest be just used for few min or not even that long
I am 54 & currently caring for my 83 yr old mom; Nov-Jan is total house declutter. You know on Hoarders when they talk about the tipping point? I just pulled back from the brink. And I have neurodiversity & mental health issues, plus chronic illness - I am so high risk for a miserable life in a pile of crap. This content is important, tbh especially if you can’t take action yet. Consuming relatively evidence-based (I disagree with the tv shows approach in some ways) & positive, realistic content like this (positive = talking about actions to solve the problem) is so important. I absorbed the message. And now, it’s still really hard to let go of stuff& truly get consumption in hand, but I know it’s literally the only path to a good life as a senior. Heirlooms are never more important than healthy living, trends are never more important than your mental health.
@@standdownrobots_ihaveoldglory this is gonna be my future. my mom and dad are boomers and they have so. much. stuff. they’ve hauled all this crap around to every place they’ve moved to 😅 i’ve tried to get them to declutter a few times, but they just yell at me and tell me to mind my business. all of it is “sentimental” or “heirlooms”. very frustrating
So, I was one of 7 kids, and my mom really used Christmas as a way to give us magic and attention that there wasnt time or money for the rest of the year. She had a budget, we each got 3 gifts and a stocking, but she was METICULOUS about the magic in that stocking. She would wrap everything, even chapsticks. To me, this wasn't consumerism or spoiling, it was a way that she made us feel really special and gave us a chance to open a lot of little things, because especially in a big family, that really only happened at Christmas and birthdays. It was super special ❤
I'm not on any social media so watching these types of reaction videos of what people are doing on social media feels like I'm on a completely different planet from them. Like...what are you talking about?! Why are you doing this?! LOL.
This exactly. I experience the craziness only through the lens of commentary TH-cam. I couldn't handle it otherwise. People have lost their dang minds!
@@byeekels In retail, they often put things out two or three months in advance. It gives them two or three more months of profit than if they were to put things out month of. We’ve had our Christmas stuff up at Home Depot since October.
I went to Dollar Tree today (12/19) and there was one big aisle divided into 2 sections-- a good amount of stuff-- Valentine's Day and Easter. I don't like rushing my life away. I like to enjoy the holiday of its season. Just like I really enjoy Summer and am never in a hurry for Fall.
@@byeekels they’re literally fast forwarding through the year now. they fully had christmas displays out before halloween was over at most of the stores here smh
They can't store the amount they get until the "appropriate" time to stock it, especially the discount stores bc they already get way more than they can even sell. Even if they could, corporate tells them when and how to put it on the floor, which is as soon as shelves start emptying. Staff aren't any happier about it lol
i think sometimes it's bc the person would feel guilty to buy it for themselves, especially if it's frivolous. for me, sometimes i want an item that is made unethically. i would not buy it for myself but will accept it as a gift.
Mmmmhmm. I would never buy something that expensive for someone knowing they would only wear it once or twice. And what happens when something like that comes out the next year and she’s ’wanted it forever’… 🙄
Am i delusional, who is throwing christmas decor away every year? Is that actually a thing? If so, that's insanity. More insane than the christmas cupboard. I kinda get the cupboard if you don't want to get things out of the loft, cellar or garage or w/e but having it right there in the front hall all year seems like such a waste of premium location storage space! If you have a massive house, sure, it really doesn't matter, it was just a hilarious shock 😂
@@Avoranation Before tiktok existed and before I was ever even on social media my family’s tradition was to have a loose rotation between my sisters and I (3 girls) and whose-ever year it was got to pick the theme and we all had to pitch in to decorate for that theme. My family moved around a lot and the longest we had a house for was 5 years straight but more often it was 1-2 years so we never kept so much stuff because we’d get rid of it all the next time we moved. So yes we did essentially buy new holiday decor every year and i hope to do that with my kids because i remember it as fun and unique to my childhood.
@@rhubihenderson1828I mean, sure, I kinda get not taking it with you .. sort of? But if you know you're moving often you could just buy a small enough amount that you can transport it when you move? Maybe making your own decorations every year could also be a fun tradition? Rather than buying all new every year. I guess it's then donated? Or just binned because the season is over? I dunno seems unnecessary, from a sustainability perspective, to chuck it all if you're not moving anywhere any more? It's also a nice tradition to bring out the same things every year. Anyway it's none of my business what you do, I just genuinely have never encountered this type of situation before so thanks for giving me a different perspective.
I’d be so disappointed because that’s cupboard looks quite spacious- you could have guest beds and linens stored in there, extra cords for the entertainment system, a CRAFT ROOM? idk but maybe that’s the lady’s craft who am I to judge lol.
@@Avoranation my sister is what I call a themer she goes by themes every year to two years, I on the other hand like to keep the same decorations and build on my collection, I like that my decorations hold a memory of time so anytime I see them and pick them up to put them on the tree I can tell the story to my kids, themes to me is like trends they are a 1 and done use. I also cannot stand plastic baubles I prefer glass baubles.
Shawna, I have to share this with you. I'm more broke this Christmas than I have been in a long time, and was feeling a little sad about not being able to buy many gifts. So I shopped my house, added some candy for the kids, and got creative with gift wrapping 🎁 Total spent, not including dad's birthday, $8. And that includes my 3 grandkids, 1, 3, and almost 12. Brother's 5-person family, my parents, and my 3 adult daughters. And they are gifts I know they will love 🎄 I'm so proud of myself and have your videos to thank
I honestly think she jumped the gun a little. I think plenty of people nowadays just are really into pink and cute. For people like that, I could totally see a tree like that being actually a better investment than a classic style because it would clash less with the stuff they have year round.
My parents are in their 70s, they also dedicated a closet for the christmas tree because bringing it up and down the stairs and putting it together got difficult with the loss of mobility. They aren't rich by any means. But its very practical!
I love the idea of having space to store the Christmas tree already built and easier to reach. Having or building a specific “Christmas tree closet” seems a bit much - it’s a storage closet that has room for a Christmas tree. Like she said in the video, it may make sense for people with a certain amount of space or in a certain tax bracket, but the way she showed a room that is more than half empty being closed away most of the year and considered it a must have seems a bit much.
I can definitely see the use of a Christmas closet for those families that go completely feral for Christmas. If they have 5+ full size trees (and years and years into a collection) that they decorate every year it could cut down on the time putting up and decorating. But no, not necessary and her TikTok seemed more "showing off lifestyle" instead of a feral for Christmas hobby. There's a woman on TikTok I'm thinking of specifically - the last two years her daughter has documented every day what she is putting up for decorations, everything is well organized and taken care of in bins.. it's a labor of love, not lifestyle. Personally it would drive me crazy to use all that space on something like that but it could be good in rare instances.
I would make the Christmas tree closet a forest with a kids tent and lanterns and stuff if I had 5 trees and extra space like that. It would be fun to play with and then you can have fun decorating the trees at Christmas when you take them out
She changed the name of a random room they have in their house into a Christmas closet. It's called an alcove, she has an alcove she turned into storage and put a rolling glass in front of.
My love language is gift giving and over the last 2 years realising that I’ve switched to giving consumables (food, flowers..ect) and experiences mostly ne most of my friends/family actually love this because those gift lastssss : memories
Hi Shawna, For those who starts their Christmas as early as September, my hunch is that they are of Filipino descent. We don't have much holidays in the Philippines, and we don't acknowledge Halloween as a holiday. We start Christmas as early as September as part of our culture. :)
I do too, lol. My kitties love to sleep under the tree and sometimes I just sit down there with them with my coffee and watch them snooze under the lights.
I really don’t think “go Christmas shopping with me” is as serious as you’re making it out to be. It’s something most people are doing this time of year. Let’s not try to twist things and make them out to be something it’s not.
Yeah, it sounded like she thought it was just an excuse to go impulse shopping. That does happen, but it’s also likely that people are having fun running errands and making planned purchases by doing it with a friend and window shopping the cute decor and getting a seasonal holiday drink.
Yeah it felt a bit off to me. Like I get that buying a lot of stuff you won't use is wasteful, but most people go shopping for gifts and maybe buy a few decorations to add to their collection (I use all of them and they are small and cheap) and for the vibes yk? Idk shopping can be fun, especially if you don't do it often, it's nice to get pretty new things every once in a while (as long as you actually use it). We should be able to enjoy the money we make a little.
Tbh I think she blew every thing in this video out of proportion. Like come on having an issue with a closet to keep ur Christmas stuff in as if that’s an issue. Going Christmas shopping really. To many gingerbread houses like come on
I’ve had a pink Christmas tree since before TikTok existed. I have almost no social media presence. I just like it. I have two sons and three step sons. Even our pets are boys. I put my pink tree up in my bedroom and it brings me joy. 🤷🏼♀️
@ I love it! If my house wasn’t tiny, my pink tree would be on display! In fact, it used to sit in my office so it could be seen in my upstairs window with my traditional tree underneath. But now I live in a shoebox so I basically am sleeping under my pink tree this time of year. 😂😂
I haven’t seen the full tiktok so correct me if i’m wrong but what’s the difference btw a christmas tree closet and storing your stuff in the attic. Every home has different quirks and will be used different by people so if she doesn’t need the extra room and decides to store all her holiday decor in the closet instead of throwing it out and then rebuying each year i don’t see the problem with that. It is a silly thing to aspire to. I wouldn’t have christmas tree closet on the list of things i’m looking for when buying a house but you def need storage space if you’re planning on reusing holiday decor for years to come.
It’s an unusual use of what looks like an entryway closet but that house looks huge so I’m guessing their coats and shoes are probably in a mudroom anyway - I agree with you!
@@bluesidecollectionit's proximity to spaces in the house that are frequently used. Having your Christmas tree in a hall cupboard all year just seems odd compared to it being in the loft or garage or w/e it's not ridiculous, it's just a very high traffic area to have seasonal things stored in. If that makes sense?
I think it's more the aesthetic storage that is "aspirational" and unrealistic for most vs how I think people typically store seasonal decorations in boxes or totes rather than just the idea of storing Christmas decorations.
@@bluesidecollection I honestly do not get the deal with half of what she posts. Moans advent calendars are full of materialistic rubbish, then moans about one giving ideas and codes. Maybe instead of my grandparents buying me one they should have just explained a scene to me and saved the paper. 🙄🤣
Gonna be honest, I'm not surprised EA made the Sims Advent calender that's empty. It tracks for that crappy company and the way they treat their customers.

Regarding wishlists, since hitting teen years, ive always made lists for birthdays and Christmas, and so have my family and friends for the most part. With us at least, the purpose of it isnt a "give me this expensive thing vibe", its more a list of things ive been wanting that i just havent gotten myself yet. They dont tend to be long or expensive (ive had years where the list consisted of loose leaf tea, a spcific book, and an artist's recent album on cd so i could play it in my car), but its a way to be sure that the gift you get someone is actually something theyll want and use. No one has to deal with returns, or your gift becoming unwanted clutter, or trash that ends up going to the landfill. We already overconsume as a society, the last thing i want if for gifts that i buy or receive to be additional pointless consumption of resources for an item that wasnt even wanted.
My whole family does this, and we all basically have continuous lists. if someone wants something that isn’t an item they would or could buy for themselves, they add it to their list. Then when a holiday or birthday rolls around the list gets edited, and the rest of the family gets gifts directly from the list or inspired by it (example, I saved up to get my husband a telescope for Christmas this year so my mother got him a guidebook book for viewing the night sky in our area). Having lists has also greatly reduced our consumption throughout the year. Instead of buying something the minute you see it and want it, you “collect” it by adding it to the list. Most stuff gets taken off after it sits for a little while because they didn’t actually want it.
Agreed - if the influencer had presented it differently then it could have been a positive impact on conscious consumption. Rather than a vague "here's what I want and it's all expensive and trendy", if they said "okay here is how to make a Christmas list. Start with one big item that you've wanted all year. Then think about the season, is there any piece of winter wear you're missing? Then think about your job - what could help you enjoy it more (back support, tea warmer, etc)? Now think about your morning and night routine, is there anything you use every single day that you would love more of? Okay now think about your home, what do you want..." That would actually help the viewers make good lists for themselves.
while i do think the skims ski stuff is cute i did see a lot of ppl critique the colours bc none of them are bright enough to be seen in an emergency so not only are they expensive they're also really impractical
My daughter has a December birthday. One year as an activity at her party, we decorated “gingerbread” houses, but rather than buying kits we used graham crackers and made the royal frosting and then had a variety of candy to choose from for decorations. No one cared that it wasn’t real gingerbread, and everyone had a great time
Really need this after an argument with mom mom where she called me a “Scrooge” (not even to my face) for not wanting to buy more crap and thinking it’s crazy to go to over 8 different stores in a week
The Sims one I'm not mad about, advent calendars used to be just pictures inside for the most part, also if you're a fan, that's pretty fun especially for younger players. At least it wasn't filled with plastic garbage, it can be recycled or closed up and kept as gamer decor.
@@floptimus yeah, this was a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. Filled with things and she would call it wasteful. Entertainment that is 99% not physical "stuff" and she's also mad 🤷🏻♀️

@@reallifemomandwife I agree! It could also be used for additional storage so hopefully not just for solely Christmas stuff. Maybe all the holiday decor instead!
I thought the same thing. This video was actually on the milder side as compared to some of the more outlandish overconsumptiontok I’ve seen. I would high-key love a Christmas closet for my decorations and village. 🙈
I had such an urge to purchase Xmas decor this year and I held myself back because of your videos. I just wanted to say thank you! I finally moved out this year and have my own place, and I wanted to finally decorate for Xmas MY way. My mom ended up giving me a ton of her decorations and they turned out so cute in my place, I really made them my own and there was no need for me to buy more. Maybe next year I’ll get a few things, but I’m really trying to hold myself accountable and not go over board.
We have a microscopic closet in our bedroom that hardly fits anything in it, so we actually do use it as a Christmas closet 😅 it’s behind our headboard and we only access it twice a year to take out the decorations and put them back after the holidays are over. It worked better for us to put our bed on that wall so we just used the tiny closet for that since we needed a place to keep the stuff anyways!
This year is my first christmas without my ‘family’ because my parents decided to make me homeless because I wouldn’t get rid of my cat (they have been abusive my whole life and see my cat as related to my girlfriend who they hate and said they want my cat to die). I’m spending christmas with my friend and her dad who have rescued me from that situation and been unbelievably kind to me. I don’t have much money because I had to get everything in storage and my parents stopped paying for my medication and made me pay these huge outstanding amounts (I’m disabled). It’s been really good to make new memories about Christmas where I don’t feel scared that I’m gonna get yelled at or forced into it and actually get a choice. Even though back with my parents they had way more decorations and presents it feels much safer and more like christmas than I’ve ever had in my whole life. As cheesy as it is christmas is getting to spend time with the people you love who care about you and I hope the people reading that get to have that experience as well
I'm sorry things are tough, hope you have a good holiday. You're right that things aren't the important part of Christmas. I'm glad you can be with people who care about you.
On defense of the list of gift ideas. After years of receiving things I couldn’t use due to size or personal sensitivities (clothes, toiletries) even when people know you sometimes the end of the year gets too overwhelming and they forget and buy in bulk, so we all got similar price present, that for me inevitably were unusable. Having a list solve the problem for most people so there’s little to no waste, people got what they needed or wanted within certain price range. When I had the first Xmas with my partner all his family where super nice and kind they did their best to make me feel welcome. But they didn’t know me and most of what I was given ended up in a charity shop. After few trial and error gift giving and receiving I felt comfortable enough to give a list of things (mostly books or experiences) They felt a little odd as they were not used to doing it, but they actually admitted to preferring that way because we all have what we need and want. Now we all appreciate the lists exchange , because we use the vouchers, or use the presents, nothing goes to waste neither money or time.
My husband's mom and siblings ALWAYS ask for and text out Christmas lists, or at least a couple gift ideas per person. It always feels so awkward to me to make a list to send them... and honestly very weird when I actually get what was on my list because I grew up just getting kinda generic things that often (not always) didn't really spark joy for me. It has been a mindset shift for me that his family genuinely cares about if you're gonna like and use your gifts!
Let me share from my perspective. IDK how much that empty advent calendar costs, if not so much, that is perfectly fine. Yes, it could be a digital calendar. This year I bought a digital advent calendar from my psychotherapist and I LOVED it! It is just a time for self-care, retrospective of the year and some mindfulness techniques. I also understand the idea of romanticising. I live with the war for 3 years, and it’s an emotional roller coaster. Some days are fine, some days are not. But romanticising winter time helps me to distract from the possible problems and real issues which may happen. Yes, I am prepared for the winter blackouts, but I cannot deal my anxiety. The only techniques which helps me is romanticising. Decorating home with light strings aka preparing for Christmas is much pleasant idea rather than preparing for the blackouts. Burning a candle is much more cozy and fancy thing than sitting in the dark. Also, all the preparations are just a part of the routine which may turn off my anxiety a bit. Of course, we should talk about overconsumption, but the idea of romanticising is not so bad ❤
I’m a new watcher of the channel, and I thought there were some interesting parallels between this and the self-help video. I loved that one, especially how you pushed back on how the hyper-focus on “getting better” ends up putting you in a negative feedback loop where you always feel broken. The thing is, like self-help, being so minimalist or hyper-aware of what you buy is also a form of materialism and mental clutter. Because ultimately, what’s at issue here is the addiction or coping aspect of stuff, and have you really escaped it if it’s always top of mind?
I wonder if the lady that buys 17 items that the kids "need" is referring to things like consumable toiletries? Even if that's the case, it seems insane to wrap every individual item like that. My husband's step-mother bought all the kids in the family toiletries for Christmas (literally a year's supply) but everyone got 1 box with all of that stuff in it and she reused the boxes every year. They were cardboard boxes with lids and she wrapped them once. She wasn't trying to save the planet though, she was just a cheapskate lol.
That was my thought too. Or she has boxes wrapped as fake presents for her videos. I don’t know how old her children are, but if some of them are very young, wouldn’t she hide the gifts until the last minute ?
A thing that disturbs me a bit is how in all those videos we see comments like "What's the link to X?" or "where can I buy one for me?" Because those things are clearly hella expensive and the people posting them are also clearly filthy rich. They are selling this idea of everything being so accessible nowadays when the average user can't really afford those, and compromise their own finances just because.
It’s just a closet that they use to store their Christmas decorations. I mean all my decorations are stored somewhere. They are just calling it a Christmas tree closet. They are just making a big deal out of it. The Sims 4 advent calendar was a marketing piece that went to their content creators. It wasn’t for sale and just was intended to get them hype so it really couldn’t have been an email. I get all the things you are saying but sometimes there is context.
the space they made into a "christmas tree closet" would be a perfect room for emergencies like hiding if there's a break in or something. such a waste of a cool space.
I understand the concern around 17 gifts but i feel that is okay? My parents do this for my birthday even though I'm a grown woman. My birthday comes during wintertime & i get small parcels throughout the day. Here is stuff i got this year, a bamboo towel, thick socks, hot chocolate sachets, a metal bookmark, Pilates mini bands, a bucket & mug( old one broke), a gloss balm, a cute trashcan for my room ( i really wanted a nice one) a jumper & a hoodie , a mouth organ & a book set. That is more than 10 things! If i include stuff from my friends & siblings, i know it will reach 20. The most expensive out of all these was the book set & the jumper. My boyfriend calls me Dudley jokingly but he knows i get happy if i get a new toothbrush(manual) on my birthday. Small things add up.
There's so many things here to critique but an advent calendar giving ideas for gameplay that isn't adding more plastic waste to the world? Lmao. I agree with you 90% of the time, but like. This is the least wasteful advent calendar I've ever seen? It's basically like the old style kind where you lift the flap and get a cute lil picture, yeah it's "nothing" but it's not plastic trinkets that are going to end up in the trash, it's ideas and game codes.
This was an interesting video and brought out a lot of thoughts/feelings. I don’t see anything wrong with an aesthetic Christmas tree or someone wanting to have a holiday storage closet. Is a holiday closet achievable for most people? No! But that doesn’t mean that that particular person shouldn’t share her closet that she is proud of. This video almost felt like you are attacking people with a higher financial budget which I don’t agree with. I do however agree that we are living in a world of over consumption and I personally have some changes to make.
@25:35 I agree with you on most stuff but can't on the list thing. My whole family makes lists and share them with one another. We make the lists long with plenty of variety on theme and price point (so we're never going to get everything from our list, but every family member will be able to find something to get us). It guarantees we'll like and use our gifts, rather than having to guess what we need when buying us an item. Also, who says it's not something we need? I often hold off on buying stuff I need (not urgently) and put it on my wish list.
You have to have such a massive house in order to have a dedicated Christmas tree closet. I have a decent amount of Christmas decor, but it get shoved into bins in my basement like a normal person. That video seemed like more of a flex of “look how rich I am and how big my house is” than anything 😅
I agree. I grew up mostly in regions of the US that have basements. So having that mount of decor wasn't that alarming to me. But many people (like you) just bin it and have it in a basement or maybe garage or attic. I agree, to be able to have a climate controlled, ground level, easily accessible room for decor is just a flex about how large their house must be in order to have such a luxury.
The thing the snowboarding outfit girl makes me think, and this is just my gut, but maybe time for some new friends. I could be totally off base here but that sense of not wanting but needing a specific new item, and almost fearing not getting it, is sometimes a result of the people in your life making you feel like shit if you can’t keep up with them. Whatever her situation I hope she is able to find joy outside of material goods and that people were not too awful to her online - it’s obviously dumb but I think what you say in perceived private to your mom gets more of a pass from me than what you put out there yourself 😂
Ngl I am not even that surprised anymore that EA would send one of the more well-known Simmers an EMPTY ADVENT CALENDAR. Hope whatever time was sent designing, folding, and mailing those advent calendars was worth the broken mess that is the Sims 4 lol
I have to respectfully disagree with this video. I think instead of being “concerned” with what others are doing - reflect on what you can and want to do. Yes no one should be pressured into doing something that will cause difficulty in the future, but everyone should wake up, dress pretty, decorate prettily enjoy time doing crafts with loved ones and give and receive gifts with joy. Do what you can- give with thoughtfulness and joy and accept with gratitude every gift received. This is one time where you should not be shamed into not consuming. All our limits apply. I always remember The gift the Princess of Wales gave the Queen on her first Royal Christmas- homemade chutney. A gift from the heart. The Queen was impressed. ❤ Merry Christmas 🎄
I have a place like the Christmas closet! It’s the space under my garage attic steps! And it’s so great because all I have to do is put all the Christmas stuff in totes, carry them to my garage, which is around 120 feet away from my house, and sometimes I use a dolly, but omg… It is so convenient! My dad must have known when he renovated our house and garage in the 1990s that I would need a space just like this 30 years later! I wish he were still here so I could thank him
I have lots of over-givers in my family so to me a list is crucial for underconsumtion. They do not need the burden nor do i expect them to/think they would consider what is not wasteful for me. I used to thinnk it was entitled with my previously frugal family until i saw how wasteful and spend happy my current family is. Lots of stress and guilt over knowing they spent lots for something i would otherwise actively try to get rid of
I’m so happy I found your channel. I’ve really been wanting to start my own(I’ve been procrastinating from anxiety of not getting views and ppl from high school/college will find it lol) channel = same message as yours. I agree with u on so many things. You make amazing points that people don’t really think about anymore omg. There’s something so blackmirrorey about those videos. Not only did I enjoy Your style more. I feel like I was actually actively listening rather than just scrolling like a robot. Again blackmirrorey!! Also off topic!! I hate to be this girl but I really want to start my channel but don’t know how to start. If anyone has any tips oml I appreciate it. Ok lol thx comments! Happy holidays
hm, the 17 small gifts seems normal to me, for children. when i was a kid in the early 90s, i think i probably often got that many gifts, between my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. as i got older, i tended to get one big gift and a stocking instead. but i grew up upper middle class, so of course that affects what seems normal to me. kids nowadays seem to want items meant for older teens or adults and are therefore more expensive than the gifts i got as a kid.
@vvitch-mist20 We have a bag that you put your christmas tree in. I just leave the same lights on it every year so we don't have to put them back on. We have an old hand me down tree so it doesn't have the fancy built-in lights. Lol
We have always used gift wishlists in my family. It’s mainly because we all have different lifestyles and interests so we’re not that great at guessing what other people would want. For example, I have a few cookbooks on my list this year. My family know I like cooking but they don’t like cooking so they would have no idea what books I would like.
17 gifts Toothbrushes x4 Toothpaste x2 3x tshirts 3x shorts 3 x nightware 2x books There you go. If you kid needed clothes to pad out to 17. You could remove a few of those items and replace with a couple of toys. Kids grow out of clothes so saving them up for Christmas isn't so bad
I think that if the closet was used for all of the holidays and seasonal things (clothing, beddding, things like that), that could be cool. Could also be more accessible for folks with mobility issues
The Sims advent calendar is the dumbest thing I've ever seen. I think it's okay that a lot of sim content creatora got sent it and they're using it to further make content, but I absolutely don't think anyone should pay for it
2min in........I am actually speechless a Christmas tree closet! In respect to the candy pink Christmas tree, some people are *really* into this. Lolita fashion is big for some people, others with small kids might use this type of thing for years and be into it. We have a purple Christmas tree in our kids room covered in lights.
23:00 I think listening to other people's wish list is just interesting to me, not to inspire my own wish list, but just as a peek into them as individuals and what they like/value. I do agree that "this is what I want and here's why you should want them too" is definitely unnecessary.
Growing up we got three items from our wishlist from our parents. My Mom said that Jesus was happy with three, we should be grateful as well. We also got a big item gift from Santa, a stocking with consumables and a book, plus a new set of pajamas. We also got small gifts from family members. I never felt like I was missing out on anything. I feel bad for kids nowadays. Social media makes it difficult not to compare.
5:29 All of these "game codes" are to redeem different expansion packs in the sims. Which isn't bad since EA marks them up to $40. However, there is only one expansion pack per each set of codes. Looking at Vixella's channel, she already has all of the packs given in the codes. So really, the codes were more for her followers than for her. Absolutely wild there wasn't actually anything worthwhile in the advent calendar. None of the prompts have much playing ability (like she mentioned, the christmas light one isn't possible. Other households don't decorate for holidays, at least that I've noticed).
Honestly I don't hate the empty advent calendar. At least now you don't have have a bunch of random items that you don't want and definitelydont need. And it gives you new ideas to do in a game you enjoy. I really honestly see this as a great alternative to most advent calendars.
i agree! i was annoyed until i realized it was only for influencers and not for sale, it’s just a marketing tactic that didnt product a bunch of packaging waste
Growing up, my parents were against wish lists. They were of the opinion that gifts are something someone WANTS to give you, not something you request. To this day I am uncomfortable with the idea of asking for gifts and I never want anyone to feel obligated to buy me things. The past few years instead of gifts my family has been going on a small trip together for Christmas. Quality time > stuff
I grew up in a household where we made our Christmas wish list. And as an adult, I asked for lists from my kids. We all still do it. I’m a terrible Gift giver. I want to give from my heart but it always misses the mark - so I very much appreciate a list. Also, I’m a person who usually only buys myself practical items, so I love giving and getting “fun” things, or extravagant things. I’m enjoying this video.
In regards to the first one, I literally have decided to only have 5 tree ornaments and just buy a tiny (real) tree every year because storing a tree in my tiny apartment for 11 months out of the year is super impractical for my situation. So we just store our little ornaments and call it a day
I love your channel because it reminds me that a lot of things are just junk and clutter! I have so much stuff that I just dont need or use bc they looked cute watching this channel snapped me out of the buy now mindset
About wishlists... My parents insist on getting me gifts for my birthday and christmas. I purposefully do not replace anything myself in the months leading up to it, to have something to tell them I want/need. A couple of years ago my frying pan was on it's last leg, so I asked for a new one for my birthday. They get to buy me something, I get something useful.
We have 4 gifts for each of our grandchildren! I always double check with our kids to make sure I am getting what the kids want for Christmas. Is it difficult to just buy a few toys, YES… as my husband says “Nana-clause” would load the house up and they would be opening gifts for hours, lol.. but I know they don’t need or want for much.. So the extra goes into their savings accounts, which they can have for college, a car, down payment on their first home, etc.. We know that will make a bigger difference in their life than blowing money on toys that have a short life span..
This is a great idea!
@@ItsRainingCuteness omg this is amazing 😍
@@ItsRainingCuteness this is a great idea! I'm trying to refresh my space a bit and a little declutter would help a lot (though I have nowhere near the amount of stuff that these overconsumption influencers have)

Ooooo i love this
The 17 gifts thing only makes me think of this:

Exactly. Whoever designed that doesn’t actually know anything about skiing.
Irony: she’ll probably be able to find that limited edition in all the Goodwills next year. 😂
@@WallxFlower so well said, it really is so frustrating.
EA sending out an empty advent calendar is very on brand for them
im pro wishlists when it comes to people you’re very very close with!! it minimizes keeping gifts you don’t want out of guilt, wasting the resources it takes to make the gift, wasting money, and removes the hassle of returning items. that being said we do have surprise gifts, we just dont get surprised with things like clothes, skincare/makeup, or accessories
@@beanybean000 i agree. some people think it’s boring, but i would much rather buy someone something that i know they want/need instead of just guessing
@@coolchameleon21 and it's still a surprise bc they don't know what items from their wishlist they'll get
This year my aunt said I don't want to get you just any chachkie or things you don't need for your birthday.
So that rescue people can find you!
the colour is also soo.... ugh. its weirdly skin coloured. which from afar must look so weird because it will seem like theyre naked??
Very true. you don't want to look like a tree when the search party is out.
The empty advent calendar.. I am speechless!
At least it's recyclable and doesn't come with a bunch of little items to clutter up the house. 😂
I was truly shook. They could have had the game ideas on their Instagram stories every day and emailed people some game codes
It's EA, what are you expecting from one of the worst gaming companies out there?
if they wanted to do an empty advent calendar they could’ve just put it in the game lmao
fr especially the ideas, like... just open up tumblr, there's accounts specifically dedicated to posting sims ideas
@@Hermititis thats a good point, pros and cons for both I guess
That many presents has me feeling so overwhelmed especially with the thought of “how am I going to match/beat this next year?!” I can’t fam
So well said.
I call it the shotgun method, I love surprises and it makes it less effort for people to get a gift. Win/win
That’s what we do too!
Oh that's really smart!
@ it works really well for us! My brother and I have small apartments and we’re all trying to accumulate less stuff, so it makes the most sense to buy people things you know won’t just take up space and will actually get used. Of course we still give/gift things not on the list, but its a good guide. I did say no body care or makeup please I need to use what I have
thats what we do too!! the element of surprise + still getting things we'll use :)

That snowboarding outfit...when you said the price and then showed the most bland plain brown jacket Ive ever seen, the way my jaw literally dropped.

Been off of social media since 2014, been a pretty stress free in that aspect. I have been bingeing these creditors.
I was at tjmaxx yesterday and there’s Valentine’s Day stuff out already 😭😭
Omg I thought that stuff was leftover from this year 😂
@@byeekels In retail, they often put things out two or three months in advance.
Staff aren't any happier about it lol
if she “wanted it forever” and really really wants it, why can’t she just buy it herself?
i think sometimes it's bc the person would feel guilty to buy it for themselves, especially if it's frivolous. for me, sometimes i want an item that is made unethically. i would not buy it for myself but will accept it as a gift.
My parents would buy cheap garland and toss it every year. I grew up thinking that stuff was supposed to be disposable 😅
And they are gifts I know they will love 🎄 I'm so proud of myself and have your videos to thank
im totally fine with the stylized tree only if they were going to reuse those assets but if its just a one time thing, it's so wasteful
The bob and the headband combo looks cute 😍
I agree! To me the earrings also match the headband! I love this fit.
Of course it could be used for storing anything, and it's a huge house
@@nkydgv2 Same in the Caribbean.
ouuu thanks for this little tidbit
respectfully shawna, I do actually sit in front of my tree with my cat with my mug of coffee sometimes because he likes to sleep on the tree skirt ❤😂
i love this for you!!
That’s awesome!
My decor is pastel pink, blue and green on my tree - just out for all to enjoy 😂 I bought it, so it's my colours!
@ I love it! If my house wasn’t tiny, my pink tree would be on display! In fact, it used to sit in my office so it could be seen in my upstairs window with my traditional tree underneath. But now I live in a shoebox so I basically am sleeping under my pink tree this time of year. 😂😂
As an auntie to preteens a list is lifesaving. When they were younger it was easy. But now I want to have ideas of things they want and will use
Yeah I don’t get what the big deal is. My family stores Christmas decorations in the garage. Some relatives store theirs in the attic or closet.
I don’t think anyone can win with her sometimes.
When I was a child advent calendars had only pictures in them.
Maybe instead of my grandparents buying me one they should have just explained a scene to me and saved the paper. 🙄🤣
Tennessee weather is crazy but most of us just buy a nice carhart jacket and it lasts us our entire lives 😂
Gonna be honest, I'm not surprised EA made the Sims Advent calender that's empty. It tracks for that crappy company and the way they treat their customers.
I saw Christmas decorations in stores as early as August where I live. It makes it feel like you can’t enjoy the seasons and holidays because there’s this push to move to the next one
Yes I saw Christmas stuff out in August and it makes me feel stressed. And right now there’s Valentine’s Day decor out and it’s mid December…
@@alysha2162 I had trouble finding decorations for my porch because Target already moved their Christmas lights. One year I couldn't replace my broken tree topper because I didn't go shopping the week after Halloween.
I’ve seen Sims DLCs that still have less in them than the advent calendar 😂
My daughter has a December birthday. One year as an activity at her party, we decorated “gingerbread” houses, but rather than buying kits we used graham crackers and made the royal frosting and then had a variety of candy to choose from for decorations. No one cared that it wasn’t real gingerbread, and everyone had a great time
Graham is tastier than gingerbread anyway. Love this.
I did that too. 😊 it’s fun because way less pressure to mess up
Great idea!
Really need this after an argument with mom mom where she called me a “Scrooge” (not even to my face) for not wanting to buy more crap and thinking it’s crazy to go to over 8 different stores in a week
You are not alone in this, my mom drives me bonkers with that behavior this time of year 😂
The Sims one I'm not mad about, advent calendars used to be just pictures inside for the most part, also if you're a fan, that's pretty fun especially for younger players.
Yeah sometimes she gives off hating just to hate, not often but crap like shitting on Touchland sanitizer is just too much, the number of hand sanitizers sitting around for me because the formula was legitimately disgusting defeats the purpose and they're refillable if you can find a decent dupe @@mariale7719
I’ll be honest, I’m with you on most of this stuff, but, that closet is pretty cool. Necessary? No…but kinda nice haha
In that case, it's great utilization of space.

They should’ve added cheap candy at least 😂😂
This was an interesting video and brought out a lot of thoughts/feelings. I don’t see anything wrong with an aesthetic Christmas tree or someone wanting to have a holiday storage closet. Is a holiday closet achievable for most people? No! But that doesn’t mean that that particular person shouldn’t share her closet that she is proud of. This video almost felt like you are attacking people with a higher financial budget which I don’t agree with. I do however agree that we are living in a world of over consumption and I personally have some changes to make.
I'm gonna miss vidmas so much! Been loving your content lately!! ❤️
Same!
Oof! Not EA missing the mark for the thousandth time 😂
I have to respectfully disagree with this video.

I went to the dollar tree for Christmas bags... They were all gone! Already setting up for valentines
hm, the 17 small gifts seems normal to me, for children. when i was a kid in the early 90s, i think i probably often got that many gifts, between my parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. as i got older, i tended to get one big gift and a stocking instead. but i grew up upper middle class, so of course that affects what seems normal to me. kids nowadays seem to want items meant for older teens or adults and are therefore more expensive than the gifts i got as a kid.
I hate having to put up and take down decorations so like having a Christmas room is not the worst lol. You just NEED to be able to afford the space.
@vvitch-mist20 We have a bag that you put your christmas tree in. I just leave the same lights on it every year so we don't have to put them back on. We have an old hand me down tree so it doesn't have the fancy built-in lights. Lol
@emilys384
When my daughter is older I'm not even gonna have a tree lol. It's so tedious to put up 😭
We have always used gift wishlists in my family. It’s mainly because we all have different lifestyles and interests so we’re not that great at guessing what other people would want. For example, I have a few cookbooks on my list this year. My family know I like cooking but they don’t like cooking so they would have no idea what books I would like.
17 gifts

There you go.
I mean, if you use a fake tree a storage place for it is a requirement. I don't think that's really any weirder than any other storage closet.
I grew up in a household where we made our Christmas wish list. And as an adult, I asked for lists from my kids. We all still do it. I’m a terrible
Gift giver.
That Christmas closet in the first video is literally half of the size of my whole apartment I live in 😮💨
@@llauoykcuftube it hurts 😭
About wishlists... My parents insist on getting me gifts for my birthday and christmas. I purposefully do not replace anything myself in the months leading up to it, to have something to tell them I want/need. A couple of years ago my frying pan was on it's last leg, so I asked for a new one for my birthday. They get to buy me something, I get something useful.
hearing you genuinely laugh at the absurdity of one of these tiktoks was really cute 😂
6:08 I bet whoever designed that got a massive raise. You just got sold an empty box bro 😂
@@itskindofemily tbf they didn't buy it, it's PR, but it's still... empty lmao
It's always been ONE Christmas gift per person in my family. what is wrong with people
We have 4 gifts for each of our grandchildren!
