    Late to the game, and zero 3x4" downspouts to be had in all of Los Angeles. I think they had them at Lowe's over the weekend (and the website said "hot item") but I never thought they'd all be gone by today. I guess the whole food insecurity thing is getting VERY REAL.

    Really enjoy your videos Mike. I'm just getting into hydroponics and haven't really settled on which systems I want to use but I do have a construction tip when sawing PVC with a power saw. Just like "drilling backwards" to get a smooth hole, on a circular saw of any sort, reverse the blade and drag the teeth through instead of cutting through (real good use for an old, dull, worn-out blade). Not saying I'm old, but I was on the design team for dirt.

    • @1948tc

      Instead of a worn out blade you could actually use a cutting wheel instead which can actually cut thru cement but no water and it slices right thru !

    Thank you for your this detailed video! 👍
    I'm going to do this too - however, if seems that here in the UK, the only downspout you can buy is 65mm x 65mm (2.56" x 2.56")..
    ..i guess this still would work, but because due to the smaller size, this holds approx half amount of liquid nutrients then yours - therefore I would need to check upon these smaller diameter grow boxes / refill them twice as frequently as you do.. 🙃
    .. I'll let you know how it went once it's done!
    Thank so much for these videos - you have been one of my biggest inspiration to start growing microgreens and vegetables in my garden! 👍 🙃

    Its probably somewhere on your channel but I've missed it if it is......Have you ever calculated the amount of water that a full 10' vinyl downspout will hold if filled to the proper height for the pool noodles/roots, etc? I just completed two of them full lenght and I've cut up the noodles and am getting ready to start some things as soon as the ambient temp is right. Thanks for all the good content!

      no need for pump in this method. These downspouts could be modified to use the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), which would require a pump, but that is not how Mike is using them. He is doing more of a "off the grid" no power needed, kratky technique.

    So this may seem a little picky but I’ve seen several variations of this with the vinyl downspouts. I just constructed a NFT system with these downspouts. It’s working great but one concerned individual inquired about it’s safety for food. Amerimax says they are made of “virgin vinyl” but nothing about a NSF rating. Not surprising as it’s not designed for this use. Do you have any information that would put such people at ease regarding this issue? Thanks

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I started with the round pipe you just have to keep it from rolling around. I am rounding up hundreds of old pictures for people that bought my eBook, there are some pictures of me experimenting with that. I cut a small section out of the pool noodle and place it in the middle.

    • @supportadmin7735

      @@KeepOnGrowin Right you can use some sort of half pipe stand made with anything other pvc parts on each end near the caps or round wall bracket with liquid nails to keep it from rolling. I mean the hole in the pool noodle is to big for a seedling. How do you support eh seedling once it is in the noodle.

      Really?? Back when I made this video a downspout was $12 (now about $16) I make 4 to 6 of these out of each one. People are spending $16 to $50 for small countertop models that only hold 6 tiny plants and the Aerogarden can run over $100 for one system.

    Looking at the thumbnail picture for your previous video... a better idea may be to make a double ended downspout with a 90 degree curve up at each end that can be covered as needed, rather than sealing both ends. That way the cover at each end can be removed and water levels checked and added to as required. The only sealing needed would be whatever glue is used to connect the 90 degree curve piece on the ends... if the piece is already existing on one end, then only one needs added. Less work...

    Sir Mike,
    Where do you buy the lower numbered nutrients for the early plants!

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Marilyn, It is the same nutrients. If you are using the ones from my shop, it is approx. 10g/10g/5g . If you buy you own and weigh it, as the plants mature, you can bump up the weight.

    Hi,
    Is there any particular reason why you didn't drill the wholes further to the ends? It seems to me that with these spaces, you could have fitted 7 wholes instead of 6 on this size of downspout..
    Thx.

    • @KeepOnGrowin
      @KeepOnGrowin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heat and bend the end inward, that's about as close as I can get and leave the plant on the end some room. This spacing has worked well with me.

    Hey Mike, could you share some thoughts or strategies on how to manage water temperature in the kratky systems, or preventing algae growth (even in opaque or painted containers)? And have you experienced a big insect problem due to the amount of warm-standing-stagnant water that's inherent to the nature of this method? Appreciate the thoughts - those are the topics were trying to adapt to currently. Other than that the systems work GREAT!

    Hi Mike! I just ordered a couple of downspouts from your Etsy site. I'm new to the idea of using hydroponics system and I plan to use these downspouts indoors for some herbs that I use very often. I just read about the advantages of pumping oxygen into the hydroponics system. Any recommendations on how I can incorporate a small pump system for these downspouts?

    • @KeepOnGrowin

      Yes just drill a small on top. Use a small aquarium pump with air stone.

      Yes, if you use pool noodles, the size is flexible. I only use that size so that I can use a net cup if I like. Some 2" net cups are actually a little larger, they have a nice size rim and will still work.

    I have watched some of your videos, and I keep on coming back to your videos. I have decided with the Kratky hydroponic. Would I be able to grow hydroponics indoors all the time? I live in PA, and with the Chemical accident recently in Ohio, and with chemtrails, I don't want to grow the hydroponics outside. I have two garden towers, and never used them yet, I was going to use them this year, but now I don't know with all the chemicals in the air. Would that be possible growning inside with your Down Spout method?

    • @KeepOnGrowin

      Not that I know of, pvc needs to get hot for that to happen. If you let these get too warm, the plants will die. Morning sun, afyernoon shade. Best to keep the liquid under 80F degrees.

    Hey Mike! The eight garden gutters I ordered from you just arrived this afternoon! They are BEAUTIFUL! GORGEOUS! I LOVE them! I love your videos ... so much great information. One of the first of your videos that I watched you used ONE hole in each gutter garden to fill and refill each garden. I'd hate to lose 8 potential planting holes for refilling. Have I missed a video where you have addressed this? Would it be OK to pop one of the noodles out to check the water level? I am a Gutter Garden Newbie ... Help me please and thanks!

    Mike Love the short elbow as an alternative to heat molding the ends. It looks supper clean. And really those little elbows aren't that expensive. I think they were only $2.55 each at Home Depot for the 2" x 3" and $3.78 for the 3" x 4". TIP. If you all do use them, do be sure to put a small piece of netting or something over each end to prevent bugs/things from getting in to the rail.
