  • Last weeks video on Shortwave radios and the need to own one was a big hit here on the channel. As a result of the many many comments I received, this week I follow up with the number one questions. "Where do I find these channels, and how do I know what they have on them" Well, here we go!

I have a small inexpensive shortwave radio from Amazon, to boost reception I hung a 20ft copper wire from my ceiling and just clipped it to my small antenna on my radio, that helped A LOT with reception along with headphones. Turned my $25 shortwave into a much more capable machine.

A good antenna is sometimes more important than the quality of the receiver

A long wire embedded in the grass works very well, too. A SW antenna doesn't have to be up in the air for receive.

Exactly. I can verify that from many personal observations being that I work in a heavy construction cinder block and steel building. Inside there a quite a few good quality Sony and GE radios. Once the antenna is broken off, it’s a just a paperweight.

I have an XHDATA D-808 radio. They are available for less than 100 bucks and offers shortwave, AM/FM, and SSB. I have been very pleased with it especially for the price. I have an Antron 99 antenna I use for my other radios that I just connect a jumper to the XHDATA and it works good.

Having been a SWL for many years my "go to" source of SW frequencies and stations has always been WRTV and Klingenfuss shortwave frequency publications, must haves for any serious DXing. I find online frequency sites hard to navigate and more often than not out of date information. For the casual listener I'm sure they provide enough information for the occasional times one may want to monitor a few broadcasts now and again. One thing any SWL needs to be aware of finding the correct time in UTC while searching for stations, your local time does not apply here. All shortwave broadcast schedules are published in UTC. Besides shortwave commercial broadcasts there's the world of shortwave utility stations like aviation, marine, military, hams, weather, spy stations, encrypted and digital communications. I'm not familiar enough with SDR shortwave radio to make any comments about it, I'm an old school SWL, hook up the radio with a piece of wire and turn it on is what I do. Love your videos by the way, you may get me back into working SSB CB radio again too!

i watched your video on your grundig radio. i just got mine the other day and I love it. got to get the antenna in the house. I have a forty meter antenna that i ran north and south. but I had to run a hundred feet of coax to get to my radio room. I payed a lot more than you did. but I already know that the am is spectacular. any how the coax was cheap cb coax and the loss was to great on it for my 7300 hundred or my five ninety. so that antenna is going to come into my bed room. I'm going to coil the coax for a choke if i had fer rite magnets i would put several of them on there.

Hey Eric, those little cheap "needle dial" shortwave receivers do work fairly well, y'know those that have 7 or 9 bands, run off AA batteries, inexpensive to buy, but that said, the occasional bargain of higher quality stuff does pop up on ebay, it's amazing what you can find just by changing the search command.... "communications receiver" will throw up yaesu and icom radios etc "ham radio" throws back all kinds of stuff, a lot of the time being listed by people who don't know what they've got!!

Thanks for sharing. Without a long wire antenna I am very limited to the stations I can pick up on my shortwave radios (I have a few since I am into restoring old radios). One recent radio with Shortwave bands I restored has a Beat Frequency Oscillator (BFO) so I can listen to SSB, and CW. For those who like to tinker with electronics there are some good sources on the web fro building your own and adding it to a shortwave radio that only process AM. My next step will be building a better antenna. Thanks again for sharing the link. I've also run across a really nice SDR that can be accessed for listening through a website in Europe (I'm in the US). I also have my own SDR that I use through my laptop that also allows to me listen to satellite transmissions. SDR console is a great freeware software package for handling the listening to sats as well as normal SW communications. I've made my own little dipole antennas clipped to proper wavelengths for doing that.

Hi Eric, Here in Great Britain I used to listen to pirate short wave transmissions on Sundays but they were getting few and far between as the operators got older and presumably either gave up or died. Having watched your video my interest is re-invigorated so I shall have to dig out some of my radios and tune in. I also have some SW transmitters myself still. What's the best frequencies to get across the pond to The States from GB?

An IMAX 2000 works great. Just unscrew the pl259 so that just center pin is connected...not the outer jacket.

I use shortwave-info almost exclusively. when you are DXing foreign language stations, you can find out who it is. Find the distance between you and stations. Once you know who's broadcasting you can look on internet to see if they have English service.

Like minded viewer foot stomping how therapeutic it is to hear voices of sanity. Like others I suspect, the noise generators are driving me to SW and HAM. Keep The Faith.

Interesting Info! ....So to use the Shoutcast (Receive only,) You have to download the software?... Even if you are not going to be making a station of your own? And this software is free?

    • @FarpointFarms
      @FarpointFarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No, you don't need to download anything at all if you just want to listen. On a PC or mac, just go to " directory.shoutcast.com/" and you will see a searchable massive listing of stations. Now on a phone, you will need to download an app, but they are free and there are a few to choose from. Have fun!

@@FarpointFarms THX For your direction, appreciated! All new to me but when I try to play stations I get Shoutcast error mesg says: "Media URL could not be loaded." "Check media URL is valid" ... I tried two diff browsers, chrome & Edge...?

    • @FarpointFarms

@@oldkingcole6147 I understand the issue. Older stations, and small ones' like my own don't have modern security certificates. In chrome, look at the URL at the top of the browser. Next to it on the right there is a little lock symbol. When you click on a station, it will change to a triangle and say "site not secure" It's 100% Ok to use the site. This tech is so old many browser just stopped supporting it by default. Click on the triangle, then look at the mini menu for an item called " Site settings" that brings up a bunch of options on a larger menu. Scroll down until you see the triangle and the words "Insecure content" Change that box to "Allow" and the site will work like it did before the update Google and Edge make in mid 2021. I know this sounds scary, but You have my work that the site, and all the tiny stations on it are 100% safe. The stations use a very old way of transmitting data over the internet and these modern browsers just don't know what to make of it. Once you have changed that setting, Chrome will remember it and it will then always work on that site. Please also note that this doesn't effect your security settings on any other site.

What’s. your opinion on webSDR? Gives you the ability to tune around, not just locked in to what is on shoutcast and don’t have to wait for propagation as you can just use a local SDR to the station you’re trying to listen to.

So I think I need that antenna video. I have a Tecsun PL380, and it has an "Easy Tuning" scan function. On SW, it picked up 2 channels during the day. At night, it found 11, so much better, but even then on most of them I really couldn't hear anything. This model doesn't seem to have any capacity to plug in an external antenna. I think it did come with a clip on sort of retractable one, but I can't find it at the moment. I have lots of wire though.

I have a challenge for ya, which might be right up ur alley. This involves u making a video on what people need to do b4 shit hits the fan and the internet does not function anymore, and guess what them web sites u mentioned do not exist no more and many people will be lost, one scenario is to just scan the bands but people should have an incase of Emergency Guide where u show them what they can do, I gotta few suggestions, print out the current list of broadcasters on them sites and make it waterproof, have a shortwave radio stored in a faraday cage, how to string a dipole quickly or make a dipole antenna, I am sure u get the drift and I dont see anyone discussing this type of topic, cos we all know every gov will make sure ur left in the dark when they do the final killshot.
