  • This is I video I didn't really want to make. It's a video I felt I needed to make. I stood in front of a camera for nearly an hour trying to come up with a way to say what needed to be said in a more eloquent way. I failed.
The truth is we are facing a change in our country that no one from my generation could have possibly imagined. While there is nothing that a person like me can do to change it, I can offer the free thinkers out there ways to stem the tide. This is one of those ways.

Very true that was probably one of the best times to be a shortwave listener especially listening to all the creepy numbers stations and unknown things! Also do you remember publications like popular communications used to assign (upon your request) official receiving station identification call signs. So if you wrote into the publication to announce what you heard you could put your call sign ( if you didn't have a ham or CB license to identify your station)

One of the last projects I worked on before retirement was installing tsunami warning sirens along the coast of Washington state. After researching the Cascadia Subduction Zone and the history of earthquakes and tsunamis, I made the decision to leave my coastal home and move inland and upcountry to a less vulnerable location. Lucky for me I have family with property and a new shop that was large enough for an apartment for a retired grandfather. I have since become the prepper advocate for my extended family. My attitude is to educate the people I love and open their eyes to decision making that will improve their odds in emergency situations. After the last 2 years, the good natured teasing has all but disappeared from my family. Framing decisions as “buying insurance” has brought along a majority of the family. The empty grocery store shelves didn’t hurt my arguments either. Be safe. Be proactive. Think long term.

Eric, thanks for this video. Despite the obvious difficulty you had in creating the video I think you nailed the topic in a very even handed way. I follow you from Canada and what you had to say applies to us as much as it applies to your closer neighbours. Pre-internet I used to go to the University library and read as many English language foreign newspapers as I could find. I also had a high school teacher who taught us that when reading news your first 2 questions should be who wrote the article and why. It is very rare to get a purely factual story. There is always opinion or perspective added in, intentionally or unintentionally. As you said, that is neither good or bad just something to be cognitive of. Thanks for all of your great videos and God bless your household.

I was an avid shortwave listener since I was 5 years old during the Cold War and enjoyed listening to foreign broadcasts for information. I still enjoy it and a shortwave radio is about as crucial as having a flashlight in an emergency. You are right in saying that we are being spoon fed what they want us to hear. Go get a shortwave radio and open up the world for yourself. Radio is and will always be king. Also don’t rely on using credit, debit or ATM cards. Always have money in the bank and on reserve. With what’s happening in Eastern Europe, people can’t get goods and services because electronic banking is shutdown. While basic supplies are tight over there, you can still procure items if you have cash. If you don’t think that can happen here, you are naive. Foreign governments can hack into our systems and shutdown our electronic transactions. Word to the wise.

Hi Erik. Yes, I see from you on the video that this was difficult to make. Here are my thoughts: 1) you made suggestions; 2) you gave options and 3) taught folks about the information they can get from shortwave radio. By definition, not failure. You met your mission on this channel - to teach. I could see that you were fighting giving any personal opinions and you succeeded. That's one thing you and I both have in common. I suspect that no matter where anyone lives, their economic position, their politics - that this video has helped to expand and educate folks, because of your channel(s). I certainly intend on staying subscribed. I doubt that anyone who is subscribed will go anywhere either. We in general may have differences in social, political, or human philosophy, but your point is universally valid: we need other sources other than the few filtered ones. In most of the industries I've worked in, it usually came down to consolidation of various outlets, rendering them to just a handful. I bought my first shortwave radio in about 1975. Once I got it I started listening and found out I didn’t want to let it go. I have heard and learned so much about the world around me with a shortwave or medium wave radio. It’s not about the receivers as much as it is about listening to the other side. Many times there’s more than two sides of a story. Also really like the different music and culture of the country that I am listening to. Greece or Brasil have wonderful stations on SW for the time. It’s just a shame that most of the big stations I used to receive aren’t always available anymore. There are always alternatives on SW.

I was a short wave listener since 1981 when I was given a radio for my birthday. I had heard my Uncle's in 1976 and from that time I wanted one of my own. WWV was the first station. Then Moscow, some weird rock and roll song. From the time I started seriously listening, I've never accepted one narrative as the final piece of info I need. A few years ago, after not being into shortwave for a while, my dad handed me a radio and said I could listen to airplanes on it like he and I used to enjoy doing together, but it was shortwave and no aircraft. I tuned up and down and found nothing. "Where did it all go??" I thought. Silent.

I grew up with my dad tinkering with military boat anchor radios and I had several iterations of the DX440/ATS803A. I use my shortwave radios quite often and listen to many places around our world. I found that we get a very edited version of world events. Long and short of it is this, find your own way to get the facts. There are a ton of news outlets that give us information. Learn how to find them and inform yourself. It may not be easy to dig through the propaganda and spin but you can. Distill world events by hearing each side. There are so many radios that are of different quality and size that this is the perfect time to get into the hobby. Tecsun has a line of small but powerful shortwave sets that are also available through CountyComm, a US army surplus dealer. Plus, there are a ton of tubesets available by Zenith, Hammarlund, Halicrafters and others. Plus we have SDR for those that lack space for traditional shortwave setups so the options are endless

Right with you…being able to hear both sides of a story is very important. I gave up watching the news back in early 2020. The narratives made me feel like I was being spoon fed only one viewpoint. I couldn’t continue in that way, so I get my news from Twitter or “X”, TH-cam videos etc. This makes me very curious about shortwave. I even have a SW radio around somewhere but it is pretty old and all analogue. Who knows…perhaps I will pick up a nicer electric one that lets me store channels as presets…and I’m wondering if I want a transceiver. We will see. Thanks for the video!!!

Great video, one that needed to be made. I listen to SW daily. If anyone wants to invest in a new radio the Tecsun PL-330 is a very good radio for the money. Amazon has it for $80. AM/FM/LW/SW with side band. I listened to Radio Thailand this morning on it without an external antenna so it is a really good radio. It does have a jack for an external antenna which will improve the reception. There’s a lot of reviews on TH-cam to check out. It’s not my most expensive radio or my best one but it is the one I use most of the time. Regardless of the radio, SW radio will give you insight on what the rest of the world is thinking. And that important too. Just my opinion.

When I started listening to shortwave, I was astounded by the differences in what we were taught and what was broadcast in other countries, and that was back in the early 70s. We turned off our cable about 15 years ago and started looking for alternate news sources. We have come to deplore mainstream media. We will look into multiple sources and prefer man on the street accounts for events. We also read overseas publications that include media in the countries that our politicians are trying desperately to start a war with.

I’m in my mid 50’s and a retired Army Infantryman that’s been in two wars as such. I can’t believe how bad things have gotten in the past 20 years and I know what propaganda looks like and how to tell when something is about to hit our society. Like most here, I don’t watch any network news, I have to rely on gathering factual info from alternative sources but the average American could care less that they’re being lied to daily. I’ve always admired short wave radios and I’d pick some up at flea markets or online sources so having these radios it allows me to be more prepared for when the music stops playing and people freak out. So a desire to get a couple good radios bloomed into a couple boxes of around 21 radios that I just had to buy and most are second hand since who wants to pay full retail when a used one does the same job (after I inspect and test the radio). Someone is imploding our society on purpose yet again, people are oblivious to the obvious. And I’m not the only one who sees the same, buddies I served with in the Army for 26 years also steadily acquire emergency food, weapons, ammo, fuel, commo, medications/antibiotics, body armor, etc. in 2020 we agreed that the election was stolen and things will likely turn hot so we all cross leveled supplies needed to function in a tactical role to defend our families. So when nothing apparently happened on that day, we gradually stood down. Things will likely fall apart once another fake event happens to cause various ethnicities to take up violence to extract revenge and target anyone in their path. When the power grid is shut down for over 3 days, people start to revert to a more primal role and attack neighbors for things they want and most of those people in large cities are unarmed and easy prey for a group of punks.

During World War II businesses that did radio and TV repair were ordered by the war department to disable shortwave on any set that came into their shop
Having done a lot of research on Cold War communications I know our government has the stations and the capability to jam any frequencies they want and in the past they have and I am shocked they haven't already jammed the shortwave with the war going on

After watching your video on Saturday morning, I spent most of the weekend familiarizing myself with the current selections of SW radios and ordered a Tecsun PL330! Thanks!

Great video and yes. It is very important now. I have been out of the hubby for years and now feel it is more important then ever before to get back into it. And I have. Thank you for sharing and thank you for having the b@@ls to talk up. I know how hard this video was to make for you. Well done brother. It is a sham that in the greatest country in the world ( yes it still is ) we are afraid of speaking our minds. Live free or Die. And God bless our troops and God bless America.

As an amateur radio operator, I have found that the ability to pick up voice signals (as opposed to CW or morse code) with a SW receiver depends mainly on propagation and antenna. I rarely can hear more than 1,000 miles away even with a 35 foot antenna.

Something I never thought of are you saying swr helps to hear the other end of a conversation? Meaning your hearing other end of conversation through swr vs cb

You did a good job getting the point across. I’m with ya, So difficult with the cancel culture taking over. I picked up a Tecsun pl-660. It is a huge learning curve. To figure out what channels to tune in. I like the skip on hams. Maybe you can put out a list of the frequencies you like best? Thanks Eric. It’s a good video. You’re doing the right thing and all this crazy shall pass.

Your video is greatly appreciated. I have a portable shortwave with sideband but reception sucks at my house. I’ll keep working on it!

A simple longwire antenna will help a lot with reception. If your radio has an external antenna jack, you can buy one for around $15 on Amazon/eBay and the like.
But if it doesn't, simply take a wire that's around 20 feet or so and solder an alligator clip to the other end. Fasten the alligator clip to the top of the telescoping antenna and toss the wire as high as you can get it. Will dramatically increase reception!
Being outside also helps signal attenuation as the RF spectrum is very dirty these days. Good luck!

Bitchute is pretty tolerant of dissident opinions. You'd have to go total Farpointwaffen for them to notice. Even then you would still be fine especially after seeing some of the stuff on the site.

Well all he said was "Don't trust the media, get a SW radio". OK... example? Did he hear a bit of news in another language that refutes what was seen on the network news last night? I am not diminishing SW in any way - it's a blast. But to slag off our brave reporters, some of whom are risking their lives for extended periods overseas, is just a kick in the nuts. Damn unpatriotic if you think about it. Look, just because Fox News says the NY Times is biased, doesn't make the NY Times biased or in any way inaccurate. And you absolutely cannot say the inverse.
