I'm glad you ran these tests.
Now I'm more informed about my FPV ground station project.
Still on the drawing board at the moment.
Thanks for the great info in all your videos. You are doing us all a big favor and we are in your debt.
    Cheers.

    1) RG-402
    2) RG-316
    3) RG-58
    4) RG6 and RG59 (only TV and CCTV) not for wifi.
    The best is RG-402?

Fernando Pesoa could I use 20 feetof Rg402 from my 5.8ghz video receiver to a 14dbi patch antenna or is that to long of a stretch?

    Factors of attenuation are:
    Length of cable
    Size of cable
    The frequency used
    Temperature
(bends, kinks, and nicks are all also a factor)
I love this stuff... makes me want to go back to university and study to pick up where I left off so many years ago.

Hi, I'm looking for a decent coax for building a pigtail for a 4g router, with ts9 attachments. What would you recommend between the semirigid RG402 , the RG316 and the rg58 ? rg58 seems a popolar choice for connectors. Isn't rg402 way better?

Can you test cat6 as well? Cause its available everywhere.

  • @brucehaynes505

Surprised at RG402 was so low loss. Love using this as so easy to assemble.
RG316 also good but do have a little trouble crimping as the die set is not properly sized, do my best with anyhow.
Going to order some RG405 cable and some connectors to try out with

Andy, is there a flexible version of the RG402. I need to extend the diversity BNC outputs from a Wireless Microphone system (uses 50 ohm bnc's). Although most of the wiring will be up a pillar - at the rack end, it will need some flex in the cable as the rack is on wheels and will be moved in a small arc from its "working " position to it's "sleep" position. Many thanks (42MHz system)

so far as I can see, the cables here are 50 ohm, which is what I believe wi fi uses, EXCEPT for the tv coax which is 75 ohm, so little wonder it is poor.
I have some cb coax, the thinner of the two which were available 30 years ago. It has no foil inside but close mesh shield. It is 50 ohm. Would you recommend that?

Great video as ever. I have found that BT VDSL2 lines cause massive interference with vaious systems in my house. It only radiates 10Mhz but the power level is increased after 4pm on many days and this interefers with various systems, especially the jamming detection feature on my wireless alarm system. To cure this I have placed my BT master socket where the line enters my property and I have placed my broadband router there. The interference problem has been solved but now the WiFi signal is weak in some parts of the property. I know that you said that you would not recommend pigtails of more than 0.5m but what about if I use RG402 with nicely soldered SMA connectors and buy new antennas, using seperate antennas for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz and I use 80mm wide metal relectors behind the new antenna. How long could I really push the pigtails to? 10m? 20m? Also can you update this video to let us know how the RG402 EBay cable compares to the genuine LMR cable that you bought from America?

Hi Andrew, thanks for this guide. I am wanting to test 75ohm coaxial cable for signal loss, is there a similar unit to the AE20401 that runs at 75ohm? cheers! Richie

Great video and real useful channel for info about wifi antennas.
Just a few things I don't understand in this video:
    1. You keep saying 600 mW are transmitted through the coax, but the power meter readings show only values of under 0.6 mW . This would be 600 µW or (-2.2 dBm)
    2. 600mW (+27.8 dBm) is out of spec for the AE20401. According to their web site the power meter is only rated up to +24 dBm. That would be slightly above 250 mW.
    3. Television type coax typically has 75 Ohm impedance. The power meter shows 50 Ohm input impedance and very probably your test transmitter also has 50 Ohm source impedance. Due to the mismatch you will see any type of weird and wonderful effects. You will have standing waves on the coax. Just shorten it a bit and you could get different results. The tv coax is not bad in itself. It is just not suited for a 50 Ohm system impedance.

great video, would love to see more like this one. thank you for sharing your experiences.
I purchased some thin 'wifi' cable from China and I'm rather sure it's shielded audio cable. wish I had a signal source and power meter.
BTW where did you get that signal source?
    cheers

Have I interpreted this video to say at you measured 600mW at 2400MHz into 2m of RG316 and the power output was measured at 549mW. That is a loss of 0.38dB... which is just 12% of the specification loss for good quality RG316 (eg Belden 84316).

It looks to me like the resolution of your power meter is 12 milliwatts so I am guessing the readings will be plus or minus 12 miiliwatts if that is 1 least significant bit of resolution. So your semi rigid is really beyond measurement with that gear. Its great to see you can do this with your set up though. Great work mate.
