  • An old Briggs Generator Engine with a tapered shaft PTO gets a new life with a straight shaft modification. Now it can be used on Go Karts, Tillers, Pressure Washers, Log Splitters, etc.
    Lenox Diamond Cut Off Blade I use:
    3" die grinder: amzn.to/2mk98D9
    4 1/2" angle grinder: amzn.to/2lJVqbq
    These tapered PTO shafts are found on all generators engines. This was a low hours 11.5ftlbs 8hp Briggs engine I picked up for $25. Just scour your local classified and you'll see these come up all the time.

      You wouldn't have been able to live with yourself. It was around .010 off center which most crude pulleys shouldn't mind. If I did it again I would bolt it to the concrete floor or something more solid. I did see one guy who was a machinist just bolt the running engine down to his lathe and run the tool down the crank.

    When I saw this video I thought to myself, great, I found someone as crazy as I am to take a grinder to a new engine shaft. But it turns out my problem is a bit different. I am replacing the engine and re-using the generator head/stator. So I need to grind a taper onto the new shaft to reuse the generator. But now, after watching your video, I measured the tapered shaft and it is indeed
    .8-ish instead of the dead nuts .750 I thought it was. I held a tape measure up to the shaft and said, yep, 3/4" and didn't even consider it might be a tenth larger. So thank you for saving me from purchasing the wrong engine. I suppose I could jump up to a 1" shaft and grind it down, I'll have to think more on this. I do have a friend with different milling machines and the expertise to do it the right way if it can actually be done. So I think I'll talk to him first and see if it is possible. Thanks again.

      Update: I ended up buying a new Kohler engine with the correct tapered shaft. The more I researched the more I realized I needed a tapered shaft and not one that I ground myself. The clearances between the rotor and stator are pretty close and so a hand grind on a shaft was probably not the best choice. Anyway, the reason I'm getting back to you is that while reassembling the generator head on the new engine I see that I damaged one of the the brushes during disassembly. The best price for a Brush Holder Assembly Part Number: 91825GS I could find is $30, most want 50 or more. Is there a way to just put new brushes in the brush assembly? I spent $500 for the Cadillac Kholer engine, I'd like to avoid spending more if I can avoid it. I'm going to look on ebay for universal style brushes while I wait for your reply. should be a simple repair if I can find some.

    • @azycray4801
      @azycray4801 ปีที่แล้ว

      Update on the update: I ordered the part, looking at the old one, it is not designed to be taken apart and brushes replaced. If it was possible to take it apart it would have only saved me about $20 anyway.

    when you consider the time to take it apart to actually machine it on a lathe . makes perfect sense to do it this way solong as you do and know what you are doing like thinking of what angle to grind from and why, like you explain. Use of sandpaper on shaft is a accepted engineering method.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AWESOME! I wasn't worried about ruining this engine and the straight shaft isn't super critical with a pulley/belt. Any slight imperfections would be canceled out by the drive belt. I have research a little since this video. I think I got harmonic vibrations from the motor and grinder and it lead to a little distortion in my grinding. I think these harmonic vibrations can be minimized by varying the speed/rpm of the motor while grinding. And the same goes for the grinder by turning it off and on while grinding I can vary the speed/rpm of the grinding disc.

    Hey Sixtyfiveford, good job! Rather than spinning the engine up and dealing with the vibrations, why not remove the spark plug and put a bolt into the threads on the end of the crankshaft. You can chuck-up the bolt (once you saw off the head) with your drill and take the diameter of the shaft down with your flap disc just as you did in your video. Cheers

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good idea. I did think of that afterwards, running it with a drill from the flywheel side or the pto side. But I may still have issues with the crankshaft counter weight adding vibrations. I think I need to bolt it down to the concrete floor or something that will steady it better.

      @@sixtyfiveford remove the piston and rod and head and then turn the bare crank in the bolted down case. Very little vibration from the out of balance crank in the mass of the block and support. Will probably do it this way as the motor is waiting on rings anyway. Youll still need to drill and tap the end or is the bolt hole deep enough to trim the end to 3/4 length standard? Does anyone make a tapered (T30?) to straight adapter that just bolts on? Would be a challenge to make something like that cheap I think....

      Lathes are nice but i have a feeling what they say is correct. How ever much your lathe cost you will spend at least twice as much on tiling and measuring equipment. The more i practice the more i learn how much i don't know lol

    I know this may sound like a dumb question but what if you needed to use a horizontal engine off a pressure washer for a generator just weld a longer piece for the shaft and taper it down would that work?

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The taper shaft is very precise and it is what balances/holds the heavy generator rotor. Personally I wouldn't be able to hand grind it precise enough to be accurate. You can generally buy a good generator engine with a bad generator head for $50-100(sometimes less) and sale a pressure washer straight shaft engine for $50-100

    Where can I buy a tapered shaft engine because I have a generator that needs a new motor with a tapered shaft.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There used to be a placed called tulsaenginewarehouse.com but I think they went out of business. They sold surplus new engines for decent deals. I'm sure there's another company out there doing the same. However, generally I just search local classifieds these days and buy another complete generator with dead power head for sub $100. What engine brand is it?

    hello and nice job ? i have a Dewalt generator with a 270 engine that was run out of oil needs a piston and a rod not available from Dewalt what can i put in it model # DG4400b or DW177fd-d

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a going to be a HONDA GX series Cloned engine. In theory it would use all the same parts as the Honda GX270 engine but sometimes the clones change stuff up just enough not to work. If you are trying to use it again as a generator, I would say just get another engine as the electric head is the #1 thing to go. You can find running generators with a bad electrical head for under $100 on classifieds to make 1 good unit. Parts will cost you way more than this.

    Can you put a predator 212on a golf cart and will it work

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most golf carts have larger 1" shaft motors for the clutch. However people on Ebay sell adapters for around $10 and you can put a Predator 212 with it's 3/4" shaft on.

  • @zx8401ztv
    @zx8401ztv 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well done :-D, that worked better than i expected.
    Keeping the grinding the same depth all over must have been a pig, i guess you took off small amounts all over then had a measure to find the high spots.
    The small error don't matter, a good drive belt will not give a dam :-D

    • @sixtyfiveford
