  • Mahadevi Upasana: Toward Mokshya through the Feminine Divine
The female power of the universe, Shakti, is a uniquely compelling Indian concept of energy that is both benevolent and dynamic. Unlike the metaphor of Radha as soul yearning for the divine Krishna, Shakti is the equal of Shiva. The repertoire of Odissi has expanded beyond the Geeta Govinda performed in the Jagganath Temple by Maharis and the Vaishnava Oriya Bhakti poetry of the boy Gotipua dancers.
    Choreographed by Sharon Lowen
    Artistic Collaboration: Kamalini Dutt
    Set Design: Naresh Kapuria
Music Composition and Direction: Rakhal Mohanty and O.S.Arun
Text: Brahmanda Purana,Smt Leela Nagarajan, Balamurali Krishna
Vocal: Subhas Dasn,Trupti Das, Ramchandra Sahoo, O.S. Arun
    Sanskrit Mantras recitation: Kali Prasad
    Pakhawaj: Harmohan Khuntia, Prafulla Mangaraj
    Sitar: Rabisankar Pradhan
Violin: sunakar Sahu, Kumar Mohanty, Srivastava
    Veena: Krishna Sharma
Flute: Kisan Lal Sarma, Jadish Barman, Rajkishore Dal Behera
    Mahadevi Upasana
The dance composition has been choreographed in three sections symbolizing the personification of universal energy as envisioned by the Shakta school of Tantrism in three divisions or three kutas - Vag Bhava, the face; Madhya, the torso; and Shakti, the lower body of Devi.
The first section visualizes the six yogic chakras or energy centers which the chakras or energy centres which the Sadhaka, or dedicated one, transcends during the sadhana until he/she reaches the thousand petalled lotus, sahasrara where he/she drinks from the fountain of eternal bliss. Here the sadhaka sees the sun and the moon in full radiance and experiences timelessness and feels free from all bonds. The sadhaka has a complete vision of Devi as Maha Tripura Sundari, the great beauty of the three worlds.
In the second section, the sadhaka contemplates different Puranic legends symbolizing Devi’s qualities: Dakshya Yagna, Witness to the Pralaya, Creation, and Shiva-Shakti union.
In the third section, five Puranic stories contrast Devi’s power with five form of benevolence, vigor with beauty, wrath with compassion: Durga destroying Mahisasura and Saraswati, Kali destroying Raktabijasura and Haimavati, daughter of the Himalayas, Devi destroying Chanda Munda and Anapurna, Lakshmi destroying Madhu Kaitava and Kanya Kumari, Meenakshi The five segments are set to 5 jatis or rhythm varieties Chaturastra (4 beats), Tishra (3 beats), Khanda (5 beats), Mishra (7 beats) and Sankirna (9 beats) in Rag Malika.
This concludes with Moksha ending with Omkarakarini, a composition of Dr. Dr. Balamurali Krishna in Raga Lavangi.

    Namaste Sharon ji,
Last week I saw your presentation on TED. It was a random search of a bore mind looking for something new. I was actually searching for something to see on Kalidas which lead me to your performance on Meghadoot on Doordarshan. No doubt I was dumb enough to get a feel of what you were presenting. I saw only a little and looked for the next link and got your TED presentation. I didn't know that something about to open for me after the end of those 30 mins. Your presentation was a Light that brought some illumination and first time I could see... I could see what Dance can truly bring down on Earth. since last one week I saw many dancers whoever I could and in each performance I tried to look for Essence you were speaking about.. I found rhythm, harmony, beauty.... but that Divine touch rarely I felt.. I must say I know nothing about dance. May be the Immense Sradha that erupted for you that I always looked for your performances for that Delight whose touch I got through your TED presentation.
I searched and searched and searched for your performances on TH-cam all that I could get. Starting from your "University of Iowa" recordings, old TV interviews, Rajyasabha TV interview ( honestly I felt anger for the interviewer, she always interrupted you at the moment you were telling something interesting ), and so on...
Thank you for teaching me how to see Dance. I never ever felt Joy in watching Odisi and Indian classical dance in general before. You have become my Guru at least from this respect. My sincere gratitude to you.
    Regards,
    Prabhat
