  • Lynette Setzkorn is known for her laughter and joy ~ now. But it was not always so. Childhood religious trauma and a major loss at the age of 12 led her to self destructive methods of coping, self loathing, and grief. With the help of a 12 step program, she found recovery, but when the love of her life died traumatically, Lynette found herself not wanting to continue this life. With a fierce case of PTSD, prevented from leaving by her fear of death, Lynette experienced a spontaneous healing and then the gift of Suzanne Giesemann's work.

An early family joke about me cut deep. I used to laugh along with other family members when yet again my father would say to me, "You were 17 days late, and never caught up." Although I laughed, this joke damaged me. To me the message in the joke was that I would never be able to amount to anything. I was doomed to be mediocre at best. As a senior , I finally admitted how painful that memory was. At 77, I believe I have healed.

I’m so sorry you experienced that, Kathy. So glad to hear that you’ve healed from it. If you get a chance, there’s a book by Lesley Lupe called “Every Breath is Precious,” and in it, she talks about “blindfolded bodhisattvas,” bright, shiny lights dropped into families where they struggle. It takes a lot of time, but they tend to come into their own later in life. Perhaps that’s you… bless you.

I watch lots of spiritual podcasts, read lots of books, both paper & audio. Suzanne is easily top of my list. I have never commented before, but I need to tell you Lynette, that I could tell your heart was wide open & your love and graciousness was like the beautiful light & music we hear about. Thank you for sharing all of that, I feel hugged.

And I hadn’t even noticed it had returned until Mike mentioned it in that gallery reading. So very grateful. I know you will find it again. We do not dishonor our loved ones by finding joy again in this life. Mine are always hollering, “it’s just the blink of an eye, human life! Enjoy it! We’ll be together soon enough.” (And when I’m irked by just about all of my dearest ones being there, I’ll occasionally holler back, EASY FOR YOU TO SAY!”) ☺

Lynnette I have obsessively read , studied and listened vast amounts on grief and “on life after life”, searching for some sanity in the madness of my grief for over a year now . How very few can transmit with such a transparency “ That Grief “ , a grief I can recognised in the depth of my soul , in the privacy of my pain . Your words have resonated with me deeply, a feeling I don’t easily find in the words / teachings/ reading of many awakened people , probably because Love, Grief , Loss and Kindness are words so overused nowadays. You share your story in a spirit and depth of thought that is a teaching by itself . My eternal gratitude .

Last night my mom, who has passed, showed up in an unexplainable unexpected way with a ladybug crawling across the top of my laptop! She likes to send ladybugs to me and I know that she finds great joy in sending them in fun unexpected ways like that. Just before that I was weirdly checking out an old Facebook message between us, so I guess it was her way I responding from spirit! I felt my momma leave, it was a physical feeling of her releasing her body and it was a powerful, instinctual, no-thought move to open the window next to us, and she flew. I have grown to believe it to be one of the greatest gifts of my life.

So many amazing, vulnerable and healing moments in this interview. I had tears many times throughout. However, today while I meditate this will be my ask " what does Love want me to know?" Thank you Lynette and Suzanne.

Thank you for sharing your story, Lynette. I have bookmarked your blog, and I look forward to learning more about you. As a member of AlAnon, also in Oklahoma, I have come to see the 12 steps as the continuation of my journey to enlightenment, a journey I began long ago. Your story is a gift to our fellow travelers.

Jeannie! Where in OK? I was in Tulsa. Desire Group. You? YES, enlightenment via the 12 steps. “God as you understand god” was my salvation. Life changing.

One of the best interviews to date! Thank you so much for the deep wisdom and beautiful language used to express the hard things. Yes, some one-liners that need printing on plaques to hang around the house to always remember. I return to ‘The Unexpected Mystic’ blogs again and again because they take me on an experiential journey that is cathartic, rewarding and uplifting. I’m going back to the beginning to listen again with pen and paper. Thank you Lynette and Suzanne.
