      @@PixelPeepers First of all, I'm not a Sony fan, I'm a technology fan, now I'm using a Samsung phone Secondly, my English is not good so please sympathize, I do not say Sony is better than all of Iphone, there are still images of Iphone do better but in my opinion most of Sony pictures do better , which fits my view.
      - About video, Sony audio better, the front camera video, your face on Sony is better Iphone, the face of the iPhone is brighter but stained, losing detail. I also like the Sony rear camera video more, especially the Sony reproduces the light from the streetlight onto the wet bricks, interspersed with dark spaces, which is quite impressive to me. Iphone better more in video balancing on 4k better, dynamic range better.
      - About the image, in the first selfie, it seems that due to the wrong focus on the hat, the face lacks detail while the hat is very clear, in the following photos, too, especially the cup of tea , I do not understand why do not focus on the subject at all, in general about shooting people in a space with a lost of light, the Iphone does a bit better, and for landscapes and space, I think Sony is better, especially the wide camera, or looking at the photo of the car, the difference is quite clear, paying attention to reconstructing the image of water droplets on the hood.

    Sony did some magic on that ultra wide lens. The detail on that thing is amazing, probably best in the market atm.
    I actually prefer most of the Xperia's videos - the pavement bricks for example look so much better, sharper. Audio is much better. Although it seems Sony's intent of keeping detail in 4k cost them in the stabilization apartment. I guess Xperia uses pretty much the whole sensor in 4k, and doesn't crop the video to keep it stable.
    So many phones push night modes to the xtreme these days. iPhone pushed it to the point where some videos look almost monochrome.
    As for photos , generally iPhone won, but I'd say Sony won in 6-7 photos , not only 4.
    All in all Apple did good with the 11. Best apple camera to date, bar none.
    Can't wait for daytime tests. I think it will be a clash of titans.

    • @PixelPeepers
      @PixelPeepers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      For videos, sony has more contrast, and that gives you the impression of detail. But actually, the shadows are too crushed on sony. And highlights are overexposed. Colors are also way off, many scenes look orange or red... Can't keep the white balance consistent. For sound i agree with you

    • @shenmueog1287
      @shenmueog1287 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@PixelPeepers I watched the video on my phone, so I guess I didn't notice that it's actually contrast. I don't know, the wet brick, the rain and water just look more smooth on the Sony in those videos. The bushes also. Yes , Sony exaggerated the street light tone, but on the other side iPhone totally dulled it.
      Anyways, front camera is really a no contest. Iphone demolished the Xperia.
      The back camera video - both cameras have their strengths, with iPhone producing generally more usable videos in most scenarios.
      Back camera night photos - Sony's auto mode surprised me in a few scenes, for example the pic of that tortilla. Sony nailed it, especially the colors. iPhone ruined it. On the other hand, that portrait shots on the Xperia are laughable. And in most scenes iPhone gets the exactly right balance between software tricks for exposures, color and detail. Sony is hit or miss.
      Apple won the test, no doubt, but it's much closer in my opinion, than it may seem at a first glance.

      @@shenmueog1287 I watched it on my pc at 4k. I can agree that the sony has better video with the back cameras. It has more detail. As far as white balance, it can be easily tuned.. there are white balance and exposure sliders in the camera app you can tune it to exactly what you see in the situation. If we are talking what you can take without touching a thing other than start recording and stop recording or shutter button for pictures then yes, iphone wins, but if I grab a hold of the Sony... bye bye iphone.

      I'm the biggest Sony fan in the South East Europe, probably. Trust me. But let's be fair, 99% of regular consumer don't have the skills, will or time to fiddle with manual settings.
      And quite frankly, some shots require fast auto modes, or the moment is gone.
      So most reviews online focus on the consumer friendly type of use. And in that regard iPhone 11 is the best on the market. Bar none.
      I'd still get the Xperia, and I will ( I'll go with the Xperia 5 though ), but we can't ignore the fact that Sony keeps focusing on the wrong approach regarding their camera.
      They try to appeal to the purists, semi pros, enthusiasts, which are less than 5% of all consumers.
      Here, I must agree with @Pixel Peepers , though I wouldn't regard this test as a dominant win by Apple.

    • @PixelPeepers
      @PixelPeepers  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I did not make a comparison between the potential that these phone have. I made it only based on fast auto shots, just like 90% of us do most of the time. I am sure that sony, in manual mode, can shoot amazing photos. Did it myself. Also, i shot the most amazing videos with cinema pro app and dji osmo mobile. But, if we are to be fair, iphone has amazing potential also with apps like lightroom mobile for photography and filmic pro for videography. But all this is not important for the masses. What’s important is what you get with a simple press of a button

You are the most helpful TH-camr who greatly help me decide everytime I want to switch to a newer Xperia. I am living in Vietnam, a place where most people claim Samsung, Iphone, Huawei to be god sake and say like Sony, LG, HTC are trash. No one around me use Xperia ever since Z1 one. People here kinda like to spend money on the most expensive and luxury phone, which Note and Iphone, and see Sony as a rubbish, and I have been very sad. Even some of them see my XZ2 Premium as a Xiaomi phone!! Xperia has been almost out of my place now, only import a tiny number of Xperia 1 and 5. That's also a sad story. Reviewers too, like they were received money from Apple and Samsung or something, they just keep say like it outplayed Xperia in every aspects. I don't say that those are bad phones, but it keeps people understand wrong about Xperia, and more reasons for Sony to leave the market. So happy if someone here can understand Xperia like you, it would pull up Xperia here on a bit...

      Pixel peepers is actually one of the fairest reviewers out there tbh. He was first to call bullshit on that joke of a DXO score (it should been above 100, maybe around 105-110 imo) but the reality is that in this test iphone 11 did indeed perform better. In regards to Xperia 1 performance in general, I have found it to perform just as well in some fields as Note10+ and in some regards it's better, likewise in other areas the note does better.
      It's clear though that the iphone 11 has had some tuning in regards to night ability and I suspect daylight will probably be a lot closer. However it does appear that in the stills, the super wide camera on sony destroys everything out there at moment, which is a real bonus for sony, now if we can get that 4k stability tuned a bit, I think the difference will be quite amazing.

    I can see why the average person would believe the camera on the iPhone is better. The video ok is definitely more stable in 4k. However, it's clear to me that some people don't appreciate the depth and realism that the Xperia 1 is capable of capturing in its photos. Yes shadows are dark and lamps are bright because that's just like they seem to be to my eyes. This is my experience using the Xperia 1. Other phones tend to brighten the photo over all and even out all surfaces. Yes you can see things clearly but it looks flat and unrealistic. Imo some phones are just different, not necessarily better.

    The iPhone is the clear winner here, and sony needs to work a lot on the video stabilization. The video on the iPhone has always been a strong point since the iPhone X, and they're trying to maintain that lead. Now the real test is with daylight photography. Great comparison Pixel Peepers! IMO this year iPhone 11 Pro's Night Mode is looking extremely impressive. Unlike the similar mode on Huawei or Google, it doesn't bump up the exposure to make everything look overly bright, or destroy everything with oversharpening like Samsung. I see many Sony fans commenting here that Xperia 1 is performing better because it doesn't turn night into a day, but let's be real here - NONE of photos from iPhone shown in this video look like they have been taken during the day. Apple's HDR magic is working in perfection to prevent the shadows from being crushed while doing a marvellous job at protecting light sources , and this happens automatically without telling users to hold still for 5 seconds for each shot. And if one still doesn't like the look of Night Mode shots, it can be turned off with a single tap.
    Meanwhile what is Sony doing? Forcing users to use manual HDR mode to get decent (but not great) dynamic range, and yet still completely falls apart except for ultra wide angle photos. Xperia's photos look either too red, yellow, mushy, overexposed or underexposed, or the combination of several of them. None of them look like they were taken by a 2019 flagship smartphone.
    This video made it very clear that Sony has absolutely no interest in investing in computational photography and instead continues to let the phone's weak camera hardware do its job without supporting them using a good software processing. I'm confident that they are doing it on purpose so that their compact cameras won't look terrible, but the strategy clearly isn't working as there are plenty of phones from other manufacturers surpass their compacts in auto mode. Yesterday I saw the post on the internet pitting RX100M5 against the newest Pixel, iPhone and Mate in low light, and in fact RX100 was performing the worst due to lack of mature JPEG processing. Frankly speaking, Sony's attitude towards the cameras on Xperia 1 disgusts me more than the image quality itself.

    Thank you Pixel Peeper for making this video, good review. So I've been watching alot of the reviews between Xperia 1 compared to other flagship phones, particularly on the camera performance aspects. I found an interesting result which most people seem to overlook. Sony did advertise this "feature" in some of their media press release prior to launch (well at least in Japan). If you look closely to the 4K 30 fps video shot, you'll notice that no matter when you press pause, the Xperia 1's video will mostly retain detail and no blur during camera motion. Just some interesing observation. You guys can check out other reviews as well and the same result will be present (in some cases low light 1080p 30fps videos as well).

    Sony's approach is to configure the camera with emphasis on manual settings, thus allowing the best shots to be achieved through experimentation and the use of the manual options. Therefore, the conclusion arrived in this video is accurate and the results are better on the iPhone and most any phone when it comes to a snapshot type of capture. For those who see photography more as an art or science, are willing to spend time experimenting with manual modes, and put less emphasis on the snapshot type of capture, the Sony will slowly grow on you. This puts Sony more as a "niche" camera to most, but more as a hidden gem to the few like myself, who have found the stunning results through experimentation. Thanks Peepers for the clip. The inferior results of the Sony actually solidifies Sony's intention in the layout of the camera, while energizing its customer base to further experiment.

    So as you already know, the ultra wide was amazing on the Sony, no questions there right?
    And the video, I agree, the iPhone is a whole lot brighter, and at times sharper, better dynamic range too. But there are scenarios at times that I'd prefer the contrast that the 1 gives. So I'd say that comes down to situations. I'd have the iPhone for most of the time but sometimes I'd wish I have the 1 for certain scenes
    As for pictures, the Sony could definitely use a different software for color detection as the tones can be too cold or too warm. Though again, it's only portraits that falls flat. Landscape with a single light source, I'd go with Sony
    I'll say, in my objective viewing, it's very situational but iPhone wins for most of the daily use. However, personally due to my interest, not in portraits but for landscape, I'd have the Sony.
    It's probably better to wait for daylight picture, but I imagine the iPhone being really true to color but the Sony might surprise in some ways.

Its a shame too as I upgrade from an iphone 7 to an 11 pro max because im bored as hell with the iPhone, but its also hard to give up 5+ years of software support, amazing resale value, and the A13s performance is unmatched. its one thing to like a picture better but its another thing if its reality or not...
    When you said its really dark, I saw that Iphone over exposes to make the video look better but in reality the darkness was more true on the xperia! you say Iphone is superior but its only subjective.
    Also, because Iphone over-exposes the videos and pictures, you can clearly see the noise and shakiness compared to the clean xperia especially on that 4K@30 with that wide angle lens (yes in normal 4k its less stabilized because of the EIS so turn that off and you will see huge improvements also change codec to H.265. yet even in your video it has far way less noise and far more true to life exposure maybe lacks just a tiny bit in color accuracy), its simply sharper, more details, Iphone might have better colors and it over exposes the shadows which makes it look more natural but it simply isnt because the job of the camera is to show you as real picture as it could and tbh Iphone failed to do so, it only delivered a better exposed photo but its not what your eye can see so its fake! and even if it was looking more natural, I would take the sony any day for that detail and less noise, because even DSRL cameras struggle to get true colors at night, heck they even struggle to shoot any good video without stabilizers and flash lights, I used iphone in the past and I was wondering if its time to buy the iphone 11 but you are confusing me saying iphone has better camera when I can see that its simply very bad in every aspect compared to the xperia, except color accuracy (in some situations not all), add to that the xperia has HDR mode in manual, its a fair comparison in auto mode, but the fact that iphone in auto has HDR enabled, sony doesnt, which makes it unfair again so turn on HDR in sony and see it crush the iphone, and if not, only then I will be convinced. As well as looking at the sky throughout the whole video on the iphone, another thing that you didnt mention is how bright the sky looks! makes me question this whole camera of the iphone taking a bad approach into trying to make the video/photo look better by this and I am pretty sure with the amount of darkness you describe with as little lights the sky looks like this especially this cloudy dark night, so yah iphone had better exposure but its not real, it is more pleasing than sony however you are right, but if its better or not its only subjective.
    watched your video over and over and all I saw was iphone crushing the Sony only in 1080@30 in normal camera there is not one aspect that the sony did better, besides that, even when Iphone looked better, it simply looked very washed even if its more stabilized in 4k or more exposing, its simply so washed I cant even look at it for long, while the xperia keeping things in perspective, cleaner, a bit more shaky but retains more details while moving, unlike Iphone which looked more stable, more exposed yet sacrificing the movements with washed out blur, its more pleasing in terms of colors again but looks like a cheap camera while the xperia looks like an unbalanced quality camera which makes the sony more preferred for me in this case.
    also, I know its not a fair comparison if you shot 4K HDR with cinema pro app because Iphone doesnt have this feature, oh wait IT doesnt have this feature so how does that make it a better video camera?
    I really would love it if you could do a video with HDR on the sony or shoot video in cinema pro app compared to iphone so I can have a better idea, im not biased for the sony but I do want to be convinced if I want to upgrade my phone to any of these, and you confused me a bit tbh, sorry if I came out a little harsh but what I saw in the video are things that you didnt mention like noise, and stability of movements and the fact that its ok to have a darker image/video because well... Its night! lol thats what the reality of what youre looking at.
    I like to make the most of my camera im not an average consumer... with that said, which do you think I should go for? could you do a comparison like that? your content is great btw I just got confused, your target audience is people who use auto only yes Iphone knows how to automatically make things look great, sony maybe less, but for those people who dont only use auto, do you still stand by your statement that Iphone is superior to sony? Id really love a comparison.

    *I finished watching the video and the conclusions I had were exactly what I imagined but Sony has greatly evolved its Auto Mode compared to what it always used to be and gains in blacks and picture realism but is not yet perfect!*
    *_It really needs to work her Camera Software harder for Auto Mode! However! When you only turned on HDR in Auto Mode within Manual Mode, the differences were huge in many ways and almost everything was vastly superior to the iPhone._*
    *_I honestly have to admit that they are improving Auto Mode but it is still a long way from being in the Pixel and Huawei Levels which are the best in this regard._*
    *_In Manual and Wide Pro Cinema Modes Sony beats everyone in everything but needs to improve the "Lazy Mode"!_*

    I have Xperia 1 since launch. I just bought iPhone 11 today. Son'y app is awful for the camera, 4k is only 30fps, and very choppy, crashes, overheats, Sony says it's normal when contacted. WIth snapdragon 855, I expected much more, especially at the price.
    Going with Apple for a while to test iOS, especially since the cpu is specifically designed for the hardware, and not just a general flagship processor.
    Sony's hardware is great, software is awful, updates untimely. Beautiful designs, great DAC, but the camera! 7 second app launch time, 4-5 seconds to switch between lenses, and stuttering 4k recording, maybe I got a dud.

  • @JodenPaoloPeroy
    @JodenPaoloPeroy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    No contest here, iPhone knocked it off the park! Their Night Mode is a more than capable competitor to Huawei and Google’s iterations.
    As for Sony, I stand by what I said before that I like their approach of keeping Night shots looking like actual night shots. I still would not use HDR on Manual during low-light shots as it sacrifices detail (something I learned the hard way on my old XZ1). I just long shutter speeds to get it more light and use a tripod. Still, Sony could do more for low-light shots. Here’s hoping they improve on their next iterations of the 1 and 5!

    I wonder if there's any working Gcam MOD for the Xperia 1, considering it actually has its camera api enabled by default, which is a first for a Sony phone to do so.
    Perhaps involving some Google's computational prowess would lessen the gap between these two.
    Also, I can't seem to find any other videos talking about this idea, maybe you could be the first to assess this thing and give others some idea?
    Oh well, congratulations to Apple, but even if Sony implements a Night Mode and fixes their 4K stabilization, as well as add the 4K@60fps capabilities on all of its 4 cameras, I don't think it would beat the iPhone 11 still. They're simply behind in the software department, which is to say, a very disappointing thing.
    Perhaps they could remove their Alpha mindset to the Xperia cameras and have them to work better in Auto mode (because Sony probably thinks that their smartphone users would be like their digital camera users that utilizes Manual Mode everytime with the camera).
