Definitely. Evem if the design of characters have changed, you can see in the test that there are facial expressions. Given the model they are applied to, they do move very smoothly and realistically. But just as you said, it's the acting. The pupet may be near perfect, but it's the pupeteer giving it the life.

The newer script shows more of Neytiri's emotional/sensitive personality, and has more of a focus on exactly why the human invaders were awful. The humans aren't even trying to understand where they are and how to coexist, they have the fundamental knowledge of a baby. When they can't just get rid of their problems with the first solution they know, they just cry for someone to fix it for them. The best humans in the whole movie were the ones who actually let themselves be incorrect and seeked to learn more about every situation, and the ones who ACTUALLY LISTENED to the Na'vi.

It's not just animation. But the acting , the voice, and how it's said. The original sounds too aggressive. The Movie one is calm. When Jack said why not kill me, in the final it was calm and soothing, the original it seems he's in attack mode. When Neytiri said stupid ignorant in the original it sounded she aggressive, the final it sounds like filtering like angry in a cute way. Huge difference.
An extra point of detail is the immersion the final acting style brings. The scene in context of the film takes place after an experience out in the night time woods with predator wildlife that have a strong sense of hearing. And it's the quiet weight of the action after a noisy and reluctant fight. It makes a lot of sense that in the final dialogue is spoken in gentle, hushed voices, maybe even a little out of breath, considering the actions. And this is also on of the first favourable interactions Jake had with any Na'vi people, the hostility is let down for a bit to speak to him sensitively about something she admires in him.
I love how animation that could’ve taken dozens of hours & thousands of dollars to make just a few decades ago is now considered “quick/cheap footage used for a test”. So much progress in 3D animation technology (& mocap technology) in just a single lifetime!! 🤩
Honestly if they released the test film, I still would've liked it because that's really developed for the year it was made. I do think the environment would've been really dull though based on what we see. No glowing plants, just a very muted regular rainforest. Avatar was and still is my favorite movie of all time

I think in the first one they delivered almost every line to sound mad or desperate. In the final film, the actors took every line and delivered it differently, matched their tone to that specific line and so created contrast between lines, and developement of the conversation from line to line
i do like that in the test verion her english is more broken. to me that feels a tad more realistic because yes she did learn it but how often does she speak english outside of talking to jake. if you dont speak it alot you'll get rusty and your speach will be more broken
I mean, there was an English school that Neytiri was associated with in the time before the film takes place, so with this storyline detail she'd by somewhat educated in the grammar of human English, and her Na'vi language/accent would be less distinguishable as a specific human one (the demo actress speaks with traits of various Asian accents, I'm not informed enough to pick which one). She actually had a sister too, who was killed by human military violence there (it doesn't get referenced in the film for some reason) which strengthens her delivery. She's talking to yet another human puppet in their language, and you can hear the cynical mistrust. There's an interesting imbalance in how much effort she and many others put into learning to speak their language fluently, yet the humans are so ignorant to not even learn basic survival beyond using guns.
I personally like the test footage much more visually. It's a little more stylized so it's not quite as uncanny. The actual quality is a little worse but I felt like I could actually tell what their emotions were when I really can't in the finished product.
