The Bully the Bully transforming into Bury the Body is an absolute highlight of the show to me, not to mention the Dirty Girl song switch up when she hits the line "who on occasion gets dirty!"
I like to think that in the universe where Max didn't go *quite* so far on the balcony, their DND group includes a whole bunch of skeletons, just so Jagerman can say "Skeleun" as many times as he likes.
Starkid makes choices like this all the time and they ALWAYS hit. Like when Dumbledore pronounced Voldemort as VALdemort, or how February pronounces science as SHience
You’re so right about Jon Matteson being the main character of the trilogy. He really does something special in each show, bringing something that only he could bring to the table
Both Jon Matteson and Lauren Lopez both did so much for this trilogy, from Paul and Emma, to Linda and Wiggly, to Richie and Ruth, truly they are the faces (and voices) of the Hatchetfield series.
Jon Matteson is absolutely my favourite Starkid because of this trilogy. Whether their next musical is a hatchetfield one or not, I just want him to have a solo song. He sounded so good in NPMD is it too much to ask 😢😢
his line delivery on "nani" in nerdy prudes must die was so fucking funny i had to pause the video and i went back and rewatched it like 5 times before i moved on
in the cast of black Friday's defense they were actually all just sick for most of it. Which is why lots of the vocals are off. Jon Mattson talked about it during his rewatch of the show.
I had a feeling something might have been up, since when I was listening to the songs I knew I needed to cross reference with the cast recordings of the soundtrack but then in the cast recordings I feel they tone down the character's voices for the sake of the best vocal performances with them so it becomes a matter of preference at that point.
Thank you for this. Yeah, I wasn't crazy about some of the songs, but they're integral to the story and/or characterization. Being ill explains it... still... impressive vocals. Thank you for this insight.
@@Undeniably_Idioticthey had to do their first ever show cancellation during that time. I saw it live 3 times all on different weeks and the sickness was spreading and bouncing back and forth.
The songs are good, I just hate the story of Black Friday. It's exactly how I imagine I would write a critique of capitalism and overconsumption - too bitter to be enjoyable.
The defining part in NPMD was not only "You are replacable", but "You are replacable LIKE ME". When he sings "Who will pray for me?", he does actually mean himself. How he felt loved for the first time and immediately is betrayed again. How Richie just accepted himself as not being a loser, and loses everything right after. Like Max did. The turning point of the song is right before Max sings "Who will pray for YOU?" for the first time. When his grief turns into rage for good.
The most tragic part is when Jagerman says that despite Richie no longer being a loser, he has still lost everything now that Max has come to kill him and take away his happy ending
@@Undeniably_Idioticjust keep note the first episode is not an accurate representation on how amazing nightmare time is, quality improves drastically after it and it’s not needed to be watched (also i personally love the first episode but for majority sakes, the episodes after are incredible)
Nightmare Time is excellent. Given the situation back in 2020 Starkid utilise the zoom medium where other musicals would’ve fumbled portraying their message and expanding on the lore in such a cool way!! ❤
Everything you've mentioned is why as much as I love the rest of the trilogy, it's hard to beat the original. In so many words, it feels like it takes the greatest advantage of its medium.
@@itwasidio1736that could work! Cause they have done parodies of horror sub genres with the trilogy so far, so it would be nice to see a parody of the religious horror genre.
Starkid is just masterful at giving you emotional whiplash. From funny to absolutely heartbreaking, then straight back to funny again. It’s amazing. They first did it perfectly in Twisted (Jafar’s “Okay Jesus Christ” after Aladdin’s backstory monologue) but somehow they just get better and better at doing it in the Hachetfield saga
Jeff absolutely came into his own with NPMD. He was good before, sometimes great, but this was the one where every song and motif flowed into the next flawlessly. I can't see NPMD without applauding after nearly every song. My cats think I'm scolding them and hide under the bed.
Since you didn't watch Nightmare Time, you didn't know that wearing her bathing suit when showering and bathing is 100% serious on Grace's part, real lore from Abstinence Camp.
Have watched Nightmare Time now, understanding the lore and going back to Nerdy Prudes Must Die is an absolute treat! We have a review of Nightmare Time on our channel now too!
I must genuinely apologise for this, after hearing other people talking about it I now see how moving it is, unfortunately it didn't resonate with me personally on viewing and I felt it disingenuous to share opinions other people had on it just for the sake of pleasing an audience
@@Undeniably_Idiotic the most heartbreaking interpretation I’ve seen of it, is that Ruth is singing but being middle age, something that she will never actually get to be
that songs speaks to me so strongly in the sense that it touches on the way nerds relate to the art we obsess over. how a middle aged mom in a musical about barbecues can transcend age and lifestyle and touch the heart of a lonely teenager and how that gives that lonely teenager a way to process and express those feelings she might have struggled to put words to on her own it reminds me of the my own relationship to Next To Normal like I know this is just a thing about art in general, the way it affects ppl who interact with it, but it felt very personal when framed this way. it's not just about anyone, it's about us! the theatre kids, the nerds!
@TindraSan this! As someone closer to 40 than 18 these days and having been that hs nerd who felt overlooked Just For Once manages to encapsulate the desire to feel Worthy of someone's attention and time from both povs; of an adult having had dreams and passion once vs being too afraid and insecure to pursue them as a teen, both just going along with life and not really living it
One detail that I really love about NPMD is that they seem oddly aware that they are in a musical. I have no idea if that counts as a call back to TGWDLM but it gives the same feeling as when Paul and Emma walked in the audience when Max yells to the public to shut up, when Peter says that his song will suck or when Richie says "oh no she's snapping again" right when Grace is about to sing, and when all the adults say "we're singing still", the writing is just insane
The way NPMD incorporates the songs into the story is so well done, whereas in Black Friday there are many internal monologues that kinda slow the pace compared to the other two shows in my opinion, however they are some really good songs, just interesting to see how each show handles their musical numbers
"Starship" is actually a parody, just not as straightforward as the rest. It's basically playing out a "The Little Mermaid"-story in the universe of "Starship Troopers". And then aside from that, alot of the characters serve as parodies of well known action sci-fi and war movie archetypes. I'm just bringing it up bc I honestly think it makes me appreciate the musical a whole lot more knowing what it's based on XD
@@Undeniably_Idiotic don't quite agree with that. Starship is taking more than just inspiration from Starship Troopers, the world the musical plays out in is a clear and direct parody of the world from that movie. An uncaring and corrupt government, military propaganda videos, manufactured war against large alien bugs.
Starship is partly an Alien parody, but changed to have an original story. If you watch the Alien movies (at least the first 2), you'll see a LOT of references and jokes come from it. The robot on board with one of the members having a robot-related trauma. The character Tazz herself, and the whole plot of trying to get one of the crew infected and actually wanting the alien eggs.
corey dorris especially has such good deliver. the way he says “scare the shit outta you” and of course the ICONIC cletus jones introduction live in my mind rent free
Yeah, and knowing how long they've been together just makes it funnier when one's character snarks about the other. Love it in TGWDLM when Ted tells Emma to go away and she replies, "Uh, fuck you...?" 😆
idk if anyone mentioned it but -there's theory that each one of lords in black represents one of five senses: -Wiggog Y'wrath "Wiggly" is touch -Pokotho "Pokey" is hearing (the one behind hive mind in tgwdlm, a lot of clues that's him is in Nightmare Time season 2 in " Yellow Jacket") -Bliklotep "Blinky" is sight -T'noy Karaxis "Tinky" is smell (he is described as a foul smelling in "Time bastard" in first season of NT) -Nibblenephim " Nibbly" is taste
Honestly, I connected Pokey to TGWDLM based on only his appearance in NPMD; he is blue, he wears a mask, and one of his spoken lines is "What do you want, Steph?" When I made the connection I had to pause the video for like three minutes and just soak it in lol
Personally I connect Wiggly to greed (he's a king, used capitalism to destroy the world) Pokey to passion "what do you want" his outfit reminds me of theater with the hat and the mask which fits as a personification of passion in a show made by passionate theater nerds. (In Yellow Jacket he participates in a kind of show too) Blinky is curiosity/intrusivity/control. Observes, knows everything, is shown to be a control freak with what he owns in nightmare time. Tinky is... Well... Time probably but I find he can be associated with the regret that one might feel on their past. You can see that especially in his episode of nightmare time. And he gets people lost in his box like people get lost in their regrets. Nibbly is probably gluttony... I feel like she's the lord in black that we saw the least and thus has the least characterisation of. But she can probably be linked to consumerism
And Webby (Who is mentioned about three times in the trilogy, all by Hannah, where Webby is dismissed as an imaginary friend) represents a sixth sense, the ability to communicate with the world beyond ours, as seen with Hannah and Lex being psychically connected to the black and white by Webby, and I'd imagine McNamara and Xander to an extent, as they know about the black and white without a known reference point (Such as the black book from NPMD)
@@carolinelutz397 In the 7 deadly sins (Although I will only use 5 because there are only five, and there aren't any obvious characters to fill the rest out), I think it would be: - Pokey as envy, he takes control of people and wants to take over every living thing - Wiggly as wrath, he causes violent riots and is described as wanting wrath in the summoning - Tinky as greed maybe, he traps people and collects them (wanting "A full set" of Peter and Ted for example) - Blinky as pride, he views himself as above mortals and he treats them as dolls to mess with and manipulate (And his theme park is covered in his symbol and is all for him) - Nibbly as gluttony, because nibbly is a mouth which needs to eat almost constantly Lust is a difficult one to fit, maybe Wiggly with how he manipulated people into having incredibly strong need for the dolls, worshipping them Sloth is probably Blinky, who waits until the last moment to do anything for himself in Watcher world, just sitting there and letting people do what he wants by slightly nudging them
@@Undeniably_IdioticI really love the idea that (in what I assume is actually a typo) rather than coming _from_ another dimension, Jeff Blim went _to_ another dimension to ruthlessly steal their melodies and bring them back for NPMD.
3:27 I love that Ted's latte hottie is Zoey, a singer and actress in her 20s, and Paul goes there and sees grumpy angry Emma in her 30s and thinks, yeah this is the love of my life :)
It’s quite a shame Nerdy Prudes Must Die didn’t get popular as much as TGWDLM did because I believe most of the fans left after Black Friday. Even I didn’t know they were making another Hatchetfield story if youtube didn’t recommend it to me on Halloween
To anyone put off by Nightmare Time being a Zoom show, I recommend using them as a podcast. Thats how I went about some of them, and it functions very well, as they are narrated! But theyre actually really good and bring so much lore, especially to the Lords in Black.
While I must admit the zoom format had put me off it, probably bad lockdown flashbacks, I will do my best to give a thorough and fair chance in all it's splitscreen and fade transition glory
I really enjoyed watching it because of the acting but also seeing them all laugh at the jokes is so funny they’re just laughing throughout every episode
Nightmare Time is definitely worth watching, as it develops the Hatchetfield lore considerably, in particular the Lords in Black (who each got an introduction before their first group appearance in NPMD). It's only seven episodes, so it's not a huge time commitment. Amd it develops the stories of some of earlier plays' protagonists further, such as Paul and Emma, Ted (who's actually Pete's older brother!), Tom, and Lex and Hannah. It also introduces some of the NPMD characters a bit early. Plus there are several characters who have so far only appeared in Nightmare Time who will likely be important in future plays.
I mean hell, there are references in NPMD that you will only understand after watching nightmare time, like when the whole town is accusing each other of being the murderer and Ziggy shows up for like 5 seconds "well I certainly don't *love* killing"
@@Undeniably_IdioticActually, you've seen more than just Wiggly's influence. Nightmare Time reveals more, but NPMD gives a very subtle call back too. If you listen carefully to that scene, you'll be able to figure out which Lord in Black and which musical they're in without Nightmare Time. If you only watch the main entries and not Nightmare Time, you're missing anywhere from half to 2/3 of the overall lore, and completely missing at least two very vital heroes (Webby and one other "retro" gal who I hope makes an appearance in a musical.) But be warned, Nightmare Time is MUCH darker than the musicals, and doesn't try to balance it out with comedy as often.
I get your point about Black Friday, but while NPMD is the overall better show, Black Friday will always be my favorite. I watched it for the first time shortly after my abusive father I hadn't spoken to in years died. Combine that with a childhood that gave me more in common & put me in a closer place emotionally with Black Friday's characters, it'll always hold a special place for me
Absolutely, I always say there's a difference between what I consider the best and what I consider my favourite because of the fact that some things just resonate with people because of our experiences in life
I agree, Black Friday is my favorite of their musicals. I already despise most commercial holidays because of my family who decides to treat it like how the characters treat it in the show. That and the fact that I had already watched npmd and tgwdlm, I had fallen in love with the characters and the actors. Everything was special about it, the music, the story, the characters and just everything.
1:01 I love that Jon Matteson is on every cover in a way. On tgwdlm he’s to the side there. On the Black Friday one it’s wiggly on there, which Jon voiced and on npmd, Richie is on the cover which is played by Jon
I’ve always considered The Trail to Oregan to be included in the hatchetfield series due to “The Watcher With a Thousand Eyes” being mentioned. I was wondering if that was just me
The Hatchetfield story is just a small part of the much bigger “Jeff Blim-iverse” and clearly he’s the mastermind controlling everything with his music
I stand by the opinion that Jon Matteson playing Paul was the best casting decision Starkid has ever made. By that point every other male castmember was well known among the fan community. But Jon was someone new, a blank slate, and it works so well with Paul being the "your average guy" character.
especially since there was a grand reveal fake out at the start of the show and when he enters on stage the actor's have to very obviously point at him to make him stand out
Dude, you seriously need to watch Nightmare Time. Starkid created a universe where each story reveals a ton of lore of Hatchetfield for us to piece together while allowing the stories to (mostly) hold up on their own. The best comparison I (and others in the fandom) can make is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The movies build on each other to tell a larger story and build out their universe, but for the most part, each movie can be a stand-alone film and be enjoyable.
@@Undeniably_Idiotic dude you should make a video called "why you NEED to watch nightmare time" i think a run time of 68 minutes and 14 seconds (give or take a second) would be appropriate and I would probably put jeff blim and pokey in the thumbnail but like these are just suggetions
Ooh fun a Starkid review! It's interesting that you disliked Black Friday so much because it was head to head with Twisted as my favorite, despite Jeff's overdone falsetto. I think NPMD beat it out though. I've been jamming to the soundtrack daily and would have absolutely loved this show when I was in high school. Great review!
Don't get me wrong some of my favourite moments and songs from the whole trilogy are in Black Friday, but with such high achieving contenders it's not a bad thing to be the weakest addition to such an incredible trilogy, and considering it does such heavy lifting with setting up the multiverse lore, the trilogy wouldn't be the same without it.
Black Friday and Twisted were also my 2 favorites (although guy who didn’t like musicals might be tied w them as well)!! Honestly I have some big problems with NPMD; I honestly didn’t even like it till the third time I watched it
Imagine if the same story in NPMD was going on in TGWDLM except the storyline of the singing hivemind took over and Pete had just survived being in a school with some paranormal murders only to be infected by a musical zombie hivemind
@@Undeniably_Idiotic That is funny, but we do see TGWDLM Pete get taken over quite early in the show, so it implies a long time is taken at the start of TGWDLM to get the ball rolling
I’m here because of “Nerdy Prudes Must Die” which I stumbled upon ACCIDENTALLY through a short animatic clip. Past three days have been a rollercoaster 🤣
I THINK I KNOW EXACTLY WHICH ONE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT 😭😭 it's the whole reason I'm here 😭 a week ago I didn't know anything about StarKid, and now I've watched all 3
I've been on a bit of a Hatchetfield binge so this popping into recommended was such a joy. Also they cooked the shit out of NPMD that's an all time favorite in my book
Every Hatchetfield fan seriously should consider giving Nightmare Time a watch! If the production quality of the first one puts you off, start with Nightmare Time 2! They are all standalone stories, so it doesn't matter which order you watch them in. There are banger songs in there, and you'll see almost every one of your favourite Hatchetfield characters get to shine! So good.
I have the same issues with Black Friday ngl. I heard that sickness had been on going during the run of BF so that could explain the wierd sound. I much prefer the recorded soundtrack
I actually think they dubbed over certain lines in songs with the cast recording of Feast or Famine I believe which thankfully is great if you want to just enjoy the soundtrack on its own.
Honestly you don't know hatchetfield without watching nightmare time. It really gives you lore about the Lords in black, the timeline split, hatchetfields past and many of the characters. Nerdy prudes must die references nightmare time a lot aswell. I highly recommend watching it if you want to get further into Hatchetfield.
@Anonymous_Individual I think it was at around 2005? Not sure rn. But there's things that happened in every universe but after that point in time the timelines split and the only thing that still happens in every universe is that Jane dies I think
American translation: black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and prices are SUPER low and usually HOARDES of people stampeded stores or atleast thats what its popular for
My controversial Black Friday opinion is that it’d actually be much more well loved if the sound mixing of the songs was on par with NPMD… and also if “what Tim wants” was shorter or cut. My knit pick with NPMD is that I didn’t find the character plot threads as compelling and the second half felt a little rushed. I was kinda confused how the Wayland manor and lords in black and the spell book tied together with Jager by the end.
I feel like TGWDLM excels with the comedy and story yet doesn't dive too deep into any emotional material but then Black Friday goes heavy with the character acting, Dylan Saunders and Kendall Nicole did phenomenal jobs so if only the actors weren't sick during the pro shoot I think it would've been far more liked, then NPMD I feel strikes a good balance between the comedy and emotion, unfortunately through the nature of a slasher movie, the characters are tragically cut down by the killer before their whole character arc can be complete
As a certified Jeff Blim Stan, I find no faults with the Action Man self-insert. As a general fan of media... yeah, it's a lot. but the Jeff Blim stan side of myself is louder than the rest
Absolutely agree with your rating of the trilogy. TGWDLM has been my no1 StarKid musical since it came out, something I just rewatch every now and then because it makes me happy and because it's a masterpiece. I was SO hyped when BF came out and was so excited to watch it.... Only to pause it halfway through and realise I am just kinda bored and not enjoying the musical at all. To this day I can't really put my finger on why. I have tried rewatching it, but it just... Doesn't do it for me. I think one of the issues is the songs are a bit draggy, the only two I am okay with are Feast and Famine and What If Tomorrow Comes (I also enjoy Black Friday cause I LOOVE Angela, but only on the soundtrack cause they were all sick when the show was recorded and unfortunately it shows). Another issue is the sheer amount of characters they show and you're supposed to care about them/have a connection with them, without really actually knowing who is the main character. Is it Lex? Is it Tom? Becky? Hannah? Mr. President? Man in a hurry? Linda? Wiggly is brilliant and Jon Matteson is the love of my musical life, but the musical in itself feels kinda forgetable. I think you described it very well; it doesn't know what it wants to be. It is kinda funny, but not funny enough; it is kinda emotional but not emotional enough; it is kinda scary but not scary enough. The balance is off. I tried watching Nightmare Time, but the format of the Zoom thingy is throwing me off, I just can't get into it. Will definitely give it another shot, but I am not sure about it. Would love to get to know more about Hatchetfield lore though, so I guess I don't have a choice xD And then NPMD came out and I was there for the premiere, genuinely awed by the musical immediately. Within the first watch I knew it's gonna be in my top 3 StarKid musicals. Second watch made me hesitate if TGWDLM is still my number one. And by third watch I knew NPMD beat it, because it's just that brilliant. It is a perfect balance of humour, serious and scary, the casting is SOOO spot on, the songs are so good I still don't even have a favourite one because they just all SLAP, and the audio and video quality just elevates this above every other musical StarKid has ever done. It is an absolute masterpiece and I can't stop rewatching it. It's no shock it only took the musical less than three weeks to hit 1M views, it's absolutely legendary. Just within the first week I watched it about six times :))) Amazing vid mate. I hope it brings more attention and subscribers to your channel!
Thank you so much! I'm glad to see someone who agrees so much, Black Friday felt so off to me that I actually reviewed the events of the show out of order because I felt like the storylines were going over and back and over and back, however I believe that's because they had a lot of complicated multiversal stuff to get through which thankfully laid additional groundwork for NPMD which took the best of both TGWDLM and BF and created a masterpiece in my eyes
It's one of the many tonal whiplash moments that could've been handled better, especially since Lex didn't even find out about it, one small fix would've been to have Ethan appear from the Black and White legitimately instead of being a bad double while Lex is being choked out, would've really tied up that loose end in an emotionally satisfying way
i think the ending of TGWDLM is my favorite. Lauren’s acting absolutely killed me…it was perfect. i think NPMD is my favorite musical tho because it’s the catchiest BUT BLACK FRIDAY HAS SOME GOOD ASS STORYSTELLING😭😭 ugh they are all good
honestly, the amount of mental gymnastics that went into creating the ending scene of TGWDLM is insane! People applaud at the end of the show, Emma breaks the fourth wall which makes people laugh so from Emma's perspective her mental torture is being laughed at and applauded to create the most hellish nightmare imaginable... and it's absolutely hilarious!
see the reason you need to watch the Nightmare Time episodes is that, in Literal Monster (40:22), the noise keeping the beat (a sort of metallic rattle) is actually the footsteps of Lumberaxe (antagonist of Abstinence Camp). also in that episode is another version of Steph and Peter meeting and falling in love! so they're like Paul/Emma where they're together in any universe they're both shown in (Emma is a main character of Perky's Buds but Paul is never mentioned) Edit: oh!! also all the small cameos in Hatchet Town!! Ziggy (Perky's Buds) and Charlie (Yellowjacket) and in the cast recording, instead of Gerald, it's Jerry, who then says "it wasn't me, it was Girl Jeri, that dirty girl!" Boy Jerry and Girl Jeri are also characters in Abstinence Camp, also that's where Grace is first called a "dirty girl" (and Jerry calls Jeri a dirty girl there too). and in the NT episode "Daddy," that's where we learn that the Man In A Hurry's name is Barry Swift (also I saw some of your replies to other comments saying you should watch NT so I know you're already maybe planning on it, this is just me giving extra reasons lol)
I feel like this is going to be one of those things where you watch a series to get introduced to the world and then get so into it that you dive into the deep lore, then rewatch it knowing the full picture and it is just that much better because of it
exactly!! I've actually not finished NT, the last one I watched was "Daddy" (#cringe lmao) so I haven't even seen Yellowjacket or been introduced to Charlie, I just know he's from Yellowjacket because of the footnote(?) on genuislyrics @@Undeniably_Idiotic
I gave Nightmare Time a try after watching NPMD because of the lore people in the comments were talking about in the comments... and it was so worth it. I tried watching NT when it first came out but I didn't enjoy it so much because I'm not a fan of zoom style videos but after the first episode or 2 they nail the format, particularly in the second season, and if it's still not for you then I recommend just listening to it like it's a podcast or having it on in the background because the stories and performances alone are worth it!
I'm gonna give Nightmare Time a review of the zoom format so I can assess the costume design, facial expressions etc. to give it a full and fair review
I definitely agree about the harmonies in Black Friday sounding off, especially in the 'Made in America' song. I heard that a lot of the cast were sick during the recording performance which makes a lot of sense, but is very noticeable, especially when you re-watch it and remember where the wobbly bits are. I wasn't sold on NPMD at first due to the 'problematic puppy' line and mention of crypto, I was worried it was going to try to make on-the-nose social commentary but was very happily proven wrong. NPMD is definitely a top 3 Starkid musical for me, alongside Starship and Tail to Oregon.
I believe tat feast or famine had a few harmonies that didn't stick the landing in Black Friday, and as for Nerdy Prudes Must Die and the specific jokes, Starkid aren't afraid of making jokes that will possibly age poorly, the "They're all into Fortnite" line from Black Friday made me cringe at first but now it has looped back around to being a line that's not meant to be taken seriously at all
yeah, i watched the digital ticket version of black friday on actual black friday (it was my birthday), and to my memory 'made in america' sounded a LOT better in that version.
Nightmare Time expands further on the Lords in Black, and all of the lore surrounding all the Locations in the Black Book, aka where each musical took place, and has music videos in some spots. Someone even made an animatic of the first one, Watcher World, and it's really well done. It expands the Lore of the magic and 'aliens'
@@Undeniably_Idiotic So.... Ive been working on this in my spare time because of my 'Tism docs.google.com/document/d/1i_fTCUMEt6YTBuzKydsf5T-ReQY43SjMRN8h4b2aPNc/edit?usp=sharing
Nightmare time is so good! I highly recommend especially because of how many characters and lore in NPMD were already introduced and developed on. And the stories imo are the same quality as the musicals, but since it’s more of an audio experience (though each actor still acts their roles) they can do more than they can on stage like the first one takes place at an amusement park and uses rollercoasters which they can’t really delve into on stage. my personal favorites are time bastard, killer track, and watcher world. two of which center different lords in black. edit: I also think it makes the original trilogy so much better. I am also not a huge fan of BF compared to the others but NMT 1 and 2 definitely enhance the whole trilogy, ESPECIALLY NPMD
Nerdy Prudes Must Die has very similar energy to Trail to Oregon and The Aladdin one, which is a great thing. Even the songs I wasnt a fan of didnt necessarily sound bad, usually just awkward. Im glad Starkid is constantly expanding and changing their casts.
I agree, NPMD did so well that even with awkward moments in songs like the chorus of Nerdy Prudes Must Die, those moments are overshadowed immediately by the "who will pray for me" moment of that song
100% agree with you about Black Friday. It never really stuck with me, in terms of story, characters or the music. It doesn't hold the chaotic Starkid comedic charm for me, and that is a key element of their shows that I love. I think TGWDLM and Nerdy Prudes Must Die are a perfect balance of comedy and horror
While it's my least favourite of the three, I've come to realise that it does a lot of heavy lifting for the world building that contributes to NPMD which elevates that show as a result
It continues to amaze me that opinions and rankings of the songs in NPMD are so varied; for example, I'd have glossed over some songs you didn't and played out some songs you did. It's not that people having different opinions amazes me, but that _every_ opinion makes sense. The songs are so well balanced, it's easy to see why anyone would prefer one over another.
Apparently there is a series that dives deeper into this obsession of a trilogy called Nightmare Time that makes the trilogy even more enjoyable, I'll be reviewing that as well when I get around to it
Yeah, out of the three, BF is my least favorite, partially because the audio and the story doesn't really do it for me as much as the other two. Overall, love Hatchetfield tho!! F**k Clivesdale
Especially in the first song where they actually howl like wolves, could've been some nice foreshadowing, but I honestly prefer the vengeful undead from beyond the grave storyline
iiii don't really know if the _musicals_ will just remain as a trilogy and i honestly hope they continue to expand and give characters like tinky, nibbly or blinky their own musical universes to destroy or humans to eventually save WITHOUT an unfortunate ending to finally end the suffering of hatchetfield
I am aware it's not going to remain a trilogy, but "The Hatchetfield Trilogy" is the most common term used to describe these three musicals as a whole which I was reviewing, I'll be diving into Nightmare Time and reviewing that soon and I hope we are given a musical with a happy end for Hatchetfield at some point too
Ive heard the theory that General mcnamera is lex's and/or hannahs father which would make more sense why he appeared to Lex but not any of the other characters
Until I saw an animation of "Who will pray for you?" I didn't know who Starkid was, but their song "I don't really wanna do the work today" has been living rent free in my head since I saw it on Tumblr like 12 years ago or something.
LMAO i just noticed during the NPMD where they sing about having to hide from Jaegerman, Pete pushes the anime nerd down to pop up behind him and lauren (one with braces) but doesn't have to for her cuz she is already short hahaha
Love the flashback! I'd love to see more of a review next time, maybe? This felt a bit like reminiscing and explaining the plot, but I'd love to see your thoughts more, if that makes sense? Currently it feels like 80%explanation and 20% review. Great video though, watched it all the way through!
I wanted the video to be accessible to those who hadn't seen some or any of the musicals, also I did kinda just wanna take a trip down memory lane in the video too to look back on in future
I just wanna say that Black Friday will forever be my favorite musical of Starkid (maybe just fav musical). Nightmare Time was amazing to follow especially through lockdown and watching it through college. The hatchetfield saga is really my favorite piece of media and I am manifesting so hard to have more content with it in the future... If you watch Nightmare Time you will have so much more questions and hunger to experience more of this universe
If you end up watching Nightmare Time it's actually its theme. So that one and the portal theme (wigglys theme) show up multiple times in hatchetfield projects
fun fact i discovered them through an animatic of a fresh cup o' joe. I never saw the perodies before so this trilogy was made to be my favorite though i do very much appreciate the cheeky thoughtfulness behind twisted as well hehe
PLEASE watch (and review) Nightmare Time. You have barely scratched the surface of the Hatchetfield lore. The first episode of Nightmare Time is not that great but the second (BOTH parts - this is important) is probably the best writing the Lang brothers have ever done. The second season of Nightmare Time is even better than the first season, both production wise (much better filming, no Zoom calls) and writing. What is important to know: in 2005, there was an event that caused the timeline to fracture, creating different timelines (only season 2 is one timeline throughout the season). Anything that happens before that event in 2005 therefore happens in all timelines. There is a place outside all dimensions, the Black and White. The Lords in Black rule the Black, Webby is a Queen in White. The Langs have planned a third Nightmare Time and a fourth musical that will bring the timeline fracture and this multiverse to a close. The next musical would not be a Hatchetfield musical however (possibly it would be adventure/pirate themed?), they're giving Hatchetfield a bit of space to breathe. But they're not done and there is a conclusion planned. Nightmare Time also includes two of my absolute favorite characters and romantic pairings: Duke and Miss Holloway. They're in NMT1.4 and 2.3 and they will be in NMT season 3 and the fourth musical and they are integral to the main plot (as is MacNamara and the Foster sisters).
An hour long video essay about my current hyperfixation? I'm so insanely ready for this. I'm absolutely gonna be sticking around on this channel for a lot longer
I feel I've been dragged into this hyperfixation too now, if you check out the Nightmare Time review we have on the channel you'll see how far into this rabbit hole I've fallen
I loved this video! I am such a huge fan of StarKid and the Hatchetfield trilogy and I agree wholeheartedly that Nerdy Prudes is their best work. It might even be in my top 5 musicals in general outside of just StarKid. As someone who aspires to create musicals the show and particularly it’s music is so inspiring to me. Especially Just For Once. I’ve been composing music for a few years now and after hearing that song I immediately wished that I had written it. Keep up the amazing work
Thank you so much! The part that has begun to stand out to me with Just For Once is when she talks about giving away her old tap shoes, making me realise that when work consumes your passion for your hobbies and all you can hope for is to relive what little spark of life you had before the monotony set in by passing what you have down to the next generation
"Then the American President does what any American President would do, and fires a nuke straight at the thing it doesn't understand." When I tell you, I CACKLED. Also, I highly recommend watching Nightmare Time, the series they did over Zoom. If you can get past some audio issues in the first couple of episodes, it's really good. Plus, as someone who also didn't exactly like Black Friday, Nightmare Time offers a LOT more insight into some of the characters that I really appreciated, specifically Hannah and Lex.
my personal head canon is that the guy who didnt like musicals ended with the musical zombies taking over the world. and the other two in the trilogy are stories made by the hive mind.
Fun fact: Max’s last name, Jagerman, when de-anglicized is “Jägermann”. In German this means “Huntsman” and if thats not THE most appropriate surname for Max I don’t know what would be
Reasons to watch Nightmare Time (in case you need any): 1. It introduces so many more characters and lore. The cast recording and proshot version of Hatchet Town refrence these characters: Barry Swift (Man in a Hurry), Ziggy, Boy Jerry, etc. Im not sure who Charlie is, though. 2. You get to know more about the Lords in Black, and see their dolls- mostly Nibbly (pink), Blinky (purple), and Tinky (yellow)! Also, this isnt stated anywhere except the talkback livestream, but Pokey (blue) is responsible for TGWDLM! 3. We see more Pete, Steph, and Grace, and learn more abiut Pete (specificly his family). 4. We learn more about Webby and the things Hannah can see than no-one else sees. ("Do you all see the memories?") Also!! We get more Kendall!! She's only 13 in BF, you know. 13!!! And she has 10x more talent than me!!! 5. We see more Ted-- very important stuff! Like, multiverse-time stuff! 6. We see a bit more Bill and Alice-- not much, but I love their dynamic and am so glad we got to see more of it! 7. We see more about Linda, and we meet her kids! And GERALD! We get more Gerald! He's actually amazing, and sinister, and a lot like Linda. But idk. I'm saying thing that'll convince me. More Bill & Alice? More Ted? More Hannah/Kendall? More Gerald and Linda's kids? More Pete, Steph, and Grace? More information on the Lords in Black? (+ Even more stuff that I won't spoil) Sign me up!
Charles (Charlie) is the rink owner in Yellow Jacket! He’s Otho’s… manager and tries to capture Hannah and Lex after Otho… well, you know. (Trying to not put super big spoilers here)
In a musical where the musical numbers are diegetic, having someone fighting the urge to sing is truly a genius way to have the climactic final battle against a hivemind happen

@@Undeniably_Idiotic and blinky in npmd :D

his line delivery on "nani" in nerdy prudes must die was so fucking funny i had to pause the video and i went back and rewatched it like 5 times before i moved on
in the cast of black Friday's defense they were actually all just sick for most of it.
Thank you for this insight.

the best part of nerdy prudes must die was when max jagerman said “IT’S JAGERIN’ TIME” and jager’d all over those guys
Truly the musical of all time

@@Taylor_greenwood he said it right before he jagered out.
"Stephs dad and his secretary get Jager'd" made me cackle and also sounds like something Max himself would say, bravo
What can I say, Jagers gonna Jager out
HE REALLY WOULD SAY THAT OH MY GOD
get jaegered idiot
*Max holds up the secretary’s head* “she just got Jager’d, Bitch!”
You will not regret watching Nightmare Time. I binged it after NPMD and now I enjoy the main trilogy even more

Twisted is the last time I saw this level of perfect balance between comedy and raw emotion accompanied by absolute banging songs up until NPMD
But it still manages to not undercut itself, unlike for instance Marvel! It lets itself have the serious moments without being ruined by the jokes
Like how right after Bill's death in TGWDLM they do the gag with the hivemind messing up their synchronisation

I am a little sad you just skip over Ruth's performance before her death. I love that piece and how singular it is
I must genuinely apologise for this, after hearing other people talking about it I now see how moving it is, unfortunately it didn't resonate with me personally on viewing and I felt it disingenuous to share opinions other people had on it just for the sake of pleasing an audience
@@Undeniably_Idiotic the most heartbreaking interpretation I’ve seen of it, is that Ruth is singing but being middle age, something that she will never actually get to be
@Undeniably_Idiotic super valid! It was a lot to cover and the video was a joy to watch and I really enjoyed myself
that songs speaks to me so strongly in the sense that it touches on the way nerds relate to the art we obsess over. how a middle aged mom in a musical about barbecues can transcend age and lifestyle and touch the heart of a lonely teenager and how that gives that lonely teenager a way to process and express those feelings she might have struggled to put words to on her own
it reminds me of the my own relationship to Next To Normal
like I know this is just a thing about art in general, the way it affects ppl who interact with it, but it felt very personal when framed this way. it's not just about anyone, it's about us! the theatre kids, the nerds!
Ok, but they did not need to go so hard with the Santa Claus is goin to highschool song and I can 100℅ see it being a real movie
oh hell yeah it does, honestly better than High School Musical in my eyes
I need to see the movie/musical now
"Starship" is actually a parody, just not as straightforward as the rest.
I feel like it's a parody in the same way TGWDLM is a parody of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and other such apocalypse invasion movies
That's probably what makes their musicals so amazing, there is so much dam to explore into the lore
corey dorris especially has such good deliver. the way he says “scare the shit outta you” and of course the ICONIC cletus jones introduction live in my mind rent free

idk if anyone mentioned it but -there's theory that each one of lords in black represents one of five senses:
-Wiggog Y'wrath "Wiggly" is touch
-Pokotho "Pokey" is hearing (the one behind hive mind in tgwdlm, a lot of clues that's him is in Nightmare Time season 2 in " Yellow Jacket")
-Bliklotep "Blinky" is sight
-T'noy Karaxis "Tinky" is smell (he is described as a foul smelling in "Time bastard" in first season of NT)
-Nibblenephim " Nibbly" is taste
Oooooh, that'll be something I'll need to keep an eye out for while watching Nightmare Time
Honestly, I connected Pokey to TGWDLM based on only his appearance in NPMD; he is blue, he wears a mask, and one of his spoken lines is "What do you want, Steph?" When I made the connection I had to pause the video for like three minutes and just soak it in lol
Personally I connect Wiggly to greed (he's a king, used capitalism to destroy the world)
Pokey to passion "what do you want" his outfit reminds me of theater with the hat and the mask which fits as a personification of passion in a show made by passionate theater nerds. (In Yellow Jacket he participates in a kind of show too)
Blinky is curiosity/intrusivity/control.
@@carolinelutz397 In the 7 deadly sins (Although I will only use 5 because there are only five, and there aren't any obvious characters to fill the rest out), I think it would be:
- Pokey as envy, he takes control of people and wants to take over every living thing
- Wiggly as wrath, he causes violent riots and is described as wanting wrath in the summoning
- Tinky as greed maybe, he traps people and collects them (wanting "A full set" of Peter and Ted for example)
- Blinky as pride, he views himself as above mortals and he treats them as dolls to mess with and manipulate (And his theme park is covered in his symbol and is all for him)
- Nibbly as gluttony, because nibbly is a mouth which needs to eat almost constantly
Lust is a difficult one to fit, maybe Wiggly with how he manipulated people into having incredibly strong need for the dolls, worshipping them
Sloth is probably Blinky, who waits until the last moment to do anything for himself in Watcher world, just sitting there and letting people do what he wants by slightly nudging them

Couldn't agree more
Nightmare Time is definitely worth watching, as it develops the Hatchetfield lore considerably, in particular the Lords in Black (who each got an introduction before their first group appearance in NPMD).
I gotta admit those costume designs in NPMD have got me intrigued by these Lords in Black beyond just Wiggly
NMT is where you truly dive into the lore
I mean hell, there are references in NPMD that you will only understand after watching nightmare time, like when the whole town is accusing each other of being the murderer and Ziggy shows up for like 5 seconds "well I certainly don't *love* killing"
@@Undeniably_IdioticActually, you've seen more than just Wiggly's influence. Nightmare Time reveals more, but NPMD gives a very subtle call back too. If you listen carefully to that scene, you'll be able to figure out which Lord in Black and which musical they're in without Nightmare Time.
If you only watch the main entries and not Nightmare Time, you're missing anywhere from half to 2/3 of the overall lore, and completely missing at least two very vital heroes (Webby and one other "retro" gal who I hope makes an appearance in a musical.)
But be warned, Nightmare Time is MUCH darker than the musicals, and doesn't try to balance it out with comedy as often.

SAAAAAME
I've been on a bit of a Hatchetfield binge so this popping into recommended was such a joy. Also they cooked the shit out of NPMD that's an all time favorite in my book
I'm glad we could assist in your time of need
correction at around 50:20, they were talking more about richie and his status as the mascot, max's body was only made aware of in the following scene
that is my bad, I think I merged some of the information in my mind from the group being interrogated and Grace going to the detective afterwards
I didn't know this was where the "SING THE BEGINNING OF MOANA" came from and now im so glad I found this video
It is one of my favourite lines from anything, glad I could share the source with you
Every Hatchetfield fan seriously should consider giving Nightmare Time a watch! If the production quality of the first one puts you off, start with Nightmare Time 2! They are all standalone stories, so it doesn't matter which order you watch them in. There are banger songs in there, and you'll see almost every one of your favourite Hatchetfield characters get to shine! So good.
Nightmare Time review is in the works
Seems like it's time for a Nightmare Time review
May I ask where the timeline split is? I’ve always been confused as to whether this was a multiverse story or not.
@Anonymous_Individual I think it was at around 2005? Not sure rn. But there's things that happened in every universe but after that point in time the timelines split and the only thing that still happens in every universe is that Jane dies I think
@@sammy5068 ok, thank you so much!
Nightmare Time is underrated and clears up and explains so much lore and how things are related to each other.
Like how TGWDLM was caused by Pokey.
I shall be making a review of that series once I finish watching it, from what I've seen so far it is extremely under rated but I can also see why
Fun fact! During the interrogation in NPMD the cops weren't aware of Max being dead at all- they were only asking about Richie as they saw his body.
I thought I had gotten that wrong but thankfully I had only mentioned it was "the disappearance of Max and the death of Richie"
American translation: black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving and prices are SUPER low and usually HOARDES of people stampeded stores or atleast thats what its popular for
Thank you very much! I don't speak American very well so this is a huge help
Have you watched nightmare time? I feel like stuff in NPMD makes a lot more sense with having watched it
As a certified Jeff Blim Stan, I find no faults with the Action Man self-insert. As a general fan of media... yeah, it's a lot. but the Jeff Blim stan side of myself is louder than the rest
I have to respect the Jeff Blim fan within myself also, but I cannot excuse the blade of truth moment
Would love to get to know more about Hatchetfield lore though, so I guess I don't have a choice xD
And then NPMD came out and I was there for the premiere, genuinely awed by the musical immediately. Just within the first week I watched it about six times :)))
Amazing vid mate.
Ethan's death pissed me off so much because I loved his character so much
It's one of the many tonal whiplash moments that could've been handled better, especially since Lex didn't even find out about it, one small fix would've been to have Ethan appear from the Black and White legitimately instead of being a bad double while Lex is being choked out, would've really tied up that loose end in an emotionally satisfying way
@@Undeniably_Idiotic I didn't even think of that but you're completely right; Ethan appearing there instead of McNamara would make SO MUCH SENSE
"Falsettoing all over the place" hoe I wish to go out tbh
Hitting a note that's a little bit too high, Dumb ways to die!
i think the ending of TGWDLM is my favorite.
People applaud at the end of the show, Emma breaks the fourth wall which makes people laugh so from Emma's perspective her mental torture is being laughed at and applauded to create the most hellish nightmare imaginable... and it's absolutely hilarious!
see the reason you need to watch the Nightmare Time episodes is that, in Literal Monster (40:22), the noise keeping the beat (a sort of metallic rattle) is actually the footsteps of Lumberaxe (antagonist of Abstinence Camp). also in that episode is another version of Steph and Peter meeting and falling in love! so they're like Paul/Emma where they're together in any universe they're both shown in (Emma is a main character of Perky's Buds but Paul is never mentioned)
Edit: oh!! also all the small cameos in Hatchet Town!! Ziggy (Perky's Buds) and Charlie (Yellowjacket) and in the cast recording, instead of Gerald, it's Jerry, who then says "it wasn't me, it was Girl Jeri, that dirty girl!" Boy Jerry and Girl Jeri are also characters in Abstinence Camp, also that's where Grace is first called a "dirty girl" (and Jerry calls Jeri a dirty girl there too). and in the NT episode "Daddy," that's where we learn that the Man In A Hurry's name is Barry Swift
(also I saw some of your replies to other comments saying you should watch NT so I know you're already maybe planning on it, this is just me giving extra reasons lol)
I feel like this is going to be one of those things where you watch a series to get introduced to the world and then get so into it that you dive into the deep lore, then rewatch it knowing the full picture and it is just that much better because of it
exactly!! I've actually not finished NT, the last one I watched was "Daddy" (#cringe lmao) so I haven't even seen Yellowjacket or been introduced to Charlie, I just know he's from Yellowjacket because of the footnote(?) on genuislyrics
@@Undeniably_Idiotic
The lore of Hatchetfield is genuinely one of the best things ever!
The more I read the comments the more I'm learning about just how deep this rabbit hole goes
My favorite part is when Richie says I’m not a loser for me that’s the defining moment of that play
it rips my heartstrings every time he belts out the line
Bro that line ALWAYS gets me. Every single time it just gives me the best shivers.
i like how in NPMD the cop theme from TGWDLM plays
It is what I mean about being more subtle with the callbacks than Black Friday was
Just watching your Black Friday review and you NEED to watch Honey Queen, it’s my favorite NMT and Linda is SO GOOD in it
I might have to give Nightmare Time a watch and maybe I'll post my thoughts about here at a later date
I love the Hatchetfield Ape Man erasure
After careful consideration I am beginning work on a Nightmare Time review, now to decide where to start...
@@Undeniably_Idiotic So.... Ive been working on this in my spare time because of my 'Tism docs.google.com/document/d/1i_fTCUMEt6YTBuzKydsf5T-ReQY43SjMRN8h4b2aPNc/edit?usp=sharing
@@owenaspinall2046 Hatchetfield Ape Man was great, grand. But not noteworthy in my brain, like Cars 2.
I think I'm gonna finally give Nightmare Time the chance it deserves and will release a review of the series when I'm done
This is one hell of a review, gotta love all the little reminders if gives me about just how good some of these songs are
Nerdy Prudes Must Die has very similar energy to Trail to Oregon and The Aladdin one, which is a great thing.
It is very entertaining looking through the comments and seeing what different aspects of the shows that people enjoyed compared to others
about a week ago, I found out about this trilogy and became obsessed, and I'm so happy to find content that includes NPMD
Apparently there is a series that dives deeper into this obsession of a trilogy called Nightmare Time that makes the trilogy even more enjoyable, I'll be reviewing that as well when I get around to it
@@Undeniably_Idiotic I'll watch it when it comes out!
Yeah, out of the three, BF is my least favorite, partially because the audio and the story doesn't really do it for me as much as the other two.
Overall, love Hatchetfield tho!!
F**k Clivesdale
Glad you enjoyed! F**k Clivesdale!
I was so certain jagerman will be a werewolf man, everything pointed to it but I'm still happy with the final poduct
Especially in the first song where they actually howl like wolves, could've been some nice foreshadowing, but I honestly prefer the vengeful undead from beyond the grave storyline
omg the guy who DIDN'T like musicals
cause he is singing along in the last song, why did I just notice this🤯🤯🤯
It all makes sense now
iiii don't really know if the _musicals_ will just remain as a trilogy and i honestly hope they continue to expand and give characters like tinky, nibbly or blinky their own musical universes to destroy or humans to eventually save WITHOUT an unfortunate ending to finally end the suffering of hatchetfield
I believe I'll find the answer to this while watching through Nightmare Time to make a review on that as well
_Nerdy Prudes Must Die_ is a consecutive series of absolute bangers with fantastic choreography! Possibly my favorite StarKid musical to date 💕
Absolutely agree, while I love the three musicals as a unit, Nerdy Prudes Must Die is just my all time favourite
a very good video to re-experience the musicals when i cant actually binge them in one go
If I'm being honest, it's one of the reasons I made the video in the first place
Until I saw an animation of "Who will pray for you?" I didn't know who Starkid was, but their song "I don't really wanna do the work today" has been living rent free in my head since I saw it on Tumblr like 12 years ago or something.
Have seen the animatic floating around the place, it truly is phenomenal to see the talent of the fans of these shows!
A Nightmare Time review is on its way and I am really enjoying it so far
@@Undeniably_Idiotic oh I'll be waiting for it! Wish you a great watch!
I just realized the piano melody that plays in NPMD (50:12) is the same as “look what happens nightmare time” in Not your seed from TGWDLM
Which is why I like that NPMD is far more subtle with their callbacks to the previous show than Black Friday was
If you end up watching Nightmare Time it's actually its theme.
Twisted will always be the Starkid show that got me the most emotionally invested!
At 57:29 The way Max sounds reminds me of Alex Brightmans BeetleJuice 😂
well I guess he would know a lot about the whole being dead thing
Lol
Nightmare Time review is in the works now
Dylan Saunders returning to Starkid is nothing short of a triumph. Both of his solo songs are fucking gorgeous.
his work in Twisted and Starship are my favourite, then seeing what he did in Nightmare Time made me realise just how versatile the guy is
Im not sure if you mentioned this but Hannah’s imaginary friend Webby is actually a lord, she’s Wiggly + the other lords in blacks’ sister!
I found that out in my Nightmare Time review that I did on our channel
"Then the American President does what any American President would do, and fires a nuke straight at the thing it doesn't understand."
When I tell you, I CACKLED.
We have a review of Nightmare Time on our channel now if you'd like to check it out!
@@Undeniably_Idiotic Oh, shoot, probably should've looked before commenting, lol. L check it out!
my personal head canon is that the guy who didnt like musicals ended with the musical zombies taking over the world. and the other two in the trilogy are stories made by the hive mind.
it was all over since the beginning, they rebuilt the starlight theatre and performed there
Fun fact: Max’s last name, Jagerman, when de-anglicized is “Jägermann”. In German this means “Huntsman” and if thats not THE most appropriate surname for Max I don’t know what would be
Gotta love language meanings! So he's a literal monster!
Starship was technically a parody of starship troopers just told from the alien bugs side.
Reasons to watch Nightmare Time (in case you need any):
Seems like I've got a lot to look forward to then
Charles (Charlie) is the rink owner in Yellow Jacket! He’s Otho’s… manager and tries to capture Hannah and Lex after Otho… well, you know.
(Trying to not put super big spoilers here)
am I the only one who presumably hears Angela shouting LET'S GO at 8:31 or am I too deep in the Angela rabbit hole
