The best thing about System of a Down is that nearly all of their songs can be considered "their best song". All of their songs are amazing and unique, I might even go so far as to say they have never made a bad song.
I have never listened to a band that can mix ballad, heavy metal, punk and Oriental elements so well to create a distinct, dark comical theme that's distinguished them from all bands that ever was or ever will be.
It's neither Oriental nor Spanish. SOAD all derive from Armenia and have openly said they use lots of sounds with a Middle Eastern influence in their works.
SOAD is probably the only band who's never made one single bad song. You can put their whole discography in the playlist and never have to skip a track. They're easily the GOAT of the alternative metal scene! ❤

I typically refer nu metal as artists that use some hip-hop influences, such as rapping, hip hop turntables, etc. While bands like soad and tool I think of as alternative metal.

John Dolmayan is one the top drummers of all time. You’ve got 5/4, 9/8, and 3/4 odd time signatures, John handles them like a master! The 9/8 (or perhaps it’s 9/4) parts are so subtle but critical to the flow of the song. John Dolmayan is a drummer’s drummer! He brings skill in spades, but never overplays.

I first heard SOAD when I was 13 years old… I’m now 27 and going to my first ever SOAD concert in February 2022. Almost 14 years later and I will FINALLY see them live. I can cross that one off my bucket list my fellow SOAD fans! Update: It was the BEST concert I’ve ever been to. The whole crowd was in the moment. Everyone was either in the pit or head banging! Haha. The energy was INDESCRIBABLE. Honestly, still can’t believe I had the chance to see them. Hope all my fellow SOAD companions are still blasting their music!!

They remind me of who I am and what I want in my life. This band has a whole meaning for me.

If you are young and yet have to explore all the music that SOAD made, then i wish i was in your shoes. When SOAD was new and done all these incredible songs it was the most wonderful time for me to do my things and listen their music. If you are young and explore em now, enjoy. Exactly. About a year ago, I really only knew their hit songs. A few months after getting Spotify, I decided "You know what, I'm gonna listen to more of SOAD's discography" I have been a massive SOAD fan since and have never looked back. Love almost everything they have released and are now 1 of the few bands that immediately comes to mind when I think of my favorites

When I was 16 years old, this album came out, I wasn't living at home due to many difficulties, but I was living with an aunt... And even though my mother did not have a lot of money, I begged her for the cd, and lo and behold, she sent it to me, from Texas to North Carolina!!!!! This band is one of the things that saved my life as an adolescent, and this song along with many others kept me alive and going..... I'm 34 years old now, and have children of my own... Thank God for System of a down!!!! And the community that comes with it... April 27th 2024 ☺️
Everything about this song is perfect. The wildly shifting moods and time signatures, the incredible instrumental and vocal performances, the simple yet beautifully introspective lyrics...it has it all. It's my favorite song by SOAD and possibly my favorite song of all time.
Been a metal fan for 20 and more years, SOAD do things with tempo and moods that only the greatest of the genre have achieved. Not necessarily complicated, but tasteful and well placed, and incredibly, wildly dynamic. Helps to have one of the tightest rhythm sections ever, a guitar player all about the sound and the songs and a truly gifted vocalist.
I like almost every music genre. Electro, rap, pop, rock and metal. But when I'm listening to the masterpieces from SOAD, I feel just awesome. This is the type of music that gives me the power, as If I were an empty battery that needs to be recharged. SOAD for the win!

This is one of my all time favorites from them because of the way everything just works together so perfectly in this song. And this is present in all their songs but it’s especially noticeable here. From the kickass guitar and bass with the percussion to the incredible intertwining of Daron and Serj’s voices just coming together beautifully. I’ve never heard a band whose members voices could come together quite as incredibly gracefully as SOAD. As a musician of 9 years, their writing and attention to detail is fucking incredible.

I am realizing now 11+ years later that there are very few bands that can increase the intensity and power as a song progresses so perfectly as System of a Down can.
This band still towers over most of what comes out anymore. Ive had these guys on my playlist for prolly 15+ years now. Sad that their creative differences get in the way but theyll always be in my hall of fame.
Creative differences aside, I saw them last year in Las Vegas at Sick New World Concert, also my birthday, Best Birthday EVER! Not gonna lie the program was full of so many bands I wanted/needed to see, at times I was overwhelmed and leaking awsomeness from my eyes, and SOAD was the last band of the night. Amazing show! Definitely a Bucket List Show for me.
Dear confused and frustrated drummers and guitarists. I THINK this is right after listening for an hour... Intro: Straight 5/4 counted 1-2-3-4-5 downbeat on 1. 1st Verse: 5/4 but sounds like syncopated 8th notes, it's damn hard to get into the groove, almost seems like the count is on an upbeat, but I was still able to count it as bars of 1-2-3-4-5, 1-2-3-4-5 or just as effectively (and perhaps moreso) as 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4 (2 bars of 5/4)....however... When Serj says "Are You" there are two bars of 3/4 snuck in there, before the count returns to 5....and then, when he says "are you Dreaming" that is four bars of 3/4 snuck in, counted 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, before returning to the 5 count... But Then...for the pre-chorus, for the "dreaming ...the night... dreaming...all right" I count as 6/8 (1-2-3-4-5-6) (four rotations total) Now the choruses, I get straight 4/4 with a triplet feel, but there's a tempo change. The slow dramatic chorus can be counted in 4/4 at 120bps. The fast aggressive chorus at the end counts as 4/4 at about 170bpm. (yes, I had to dig out my metronome...lol) The 4/4 sounds SOOOO heavy against the weird jarring 5 rhythms... If John came up with this count, he's a legend. Even moreso if Darren cooked this song up and John had to figure out how to drum it. Sometimes guitar players write shit and the drummer is like "fuck you man..." *EDIT 8/29/21* : After replying to a comment below questioning my counts, I realized the following: The little acoustic interlude Darron plays during the drum rest near the intro and before V1... That sort of DOES count as 9/8. *But!* if you are counting the song in the same tempo as the heavy intro using a DAW or a metronome, it still elapses a full 10 beats before drums come back in for the verse to begin... So what I'm guessing is that John recorded the song intro and verse to a 5/4 click or counted 5/4 in his head and Darron just forced in his little riff of 9 counts in the gap, but at a slightly slower tempo. The whole debate here might come down to mere human error! So they could be playing in contradictory timings attempting (or perhaps purely accidentally) forming an accidental polymeter or more likely an accidental polyrhythm. I think that is most likely here, hence a guitar player might want to count that acoustic lick in a laggy 9/8 but all other musicians would want to be counting a 5/4 consistent with the intro tempo. That would also explain the brief moment of silence and the jarring feel as the acoustic phrase ends and the verse begins with the first drum sound and Serj singing the first note.

I just tried playing it just now on both my guitar and drums and I can count 5/4 with the two bars of 3/4 at the end of each stanza pretty reliably. When I try counting it as 9, I would be counting it as either three groups of three, which doesn't work at all, or two groups of 4 plus an extra count every other time so 4+5/4 or 5+4/4. And neither of those seem to fit the groove either... I just cannot get that to count out properly without lagging. That lag is there because it should be a tenth beat. Hence 5/4... but, Darron isn't in time for the clean guitar ditty at the intro... more on that in a moment. First the structure I programmed into a DAW to double check myself: So the whole first verse from "sweet berries" starting with the first drum sound. Two bars of 5/4 - sweet berries ready for two ghost are no different than you (x2) Two bars of 3/4 - are you... Two bars of 5/4 - sweet berries.... Four bars of 3/4 - are you, dreaming Chorus 4/4 - Do we... Now... back to Mr. Malakian's odd acoustic ditty... The 3+3+2+2 rhythm in 5/4 is found in the Mission-Impossible Theme, Take Five, and this song's intro riff, and just feels better than cutting one of the eighth notes out completely.

No band has come close to the level System of a Down was. They were an awesome band and I am so sad they aren't together anymore. Their music was different, it actually had a huge impact on my younger life. My boyfriend was supposed to see them but our son was born that day. I’ve been listening to this one on repeat so much lately. When I finally sat down and watched it for the first time in several years, I cried like a baby. The extreme dynamics of the arrangement throughout the entire song, Serj and Daron’s voices together, Schavo...you know what I mean, he projects so much in his facial expressions alone. I first heard SOAD when I was 13 years old… I’m now 27 and going to my first ever SOAD concert in February 2022. Almost 14 years later and I will FINALLY see them live. I can cross that one off my bucket list my fellow SOAD fans!
Update: It was the BEST concert I’ve ever been to. The whole crowd was in the moment. Everyone was either in the pit or head banging! Haha. The energy was INDESCRIBABLE. Honestly, still can’t believe I had the chance to see them. Hope all my fellow SOAD companions are still blasting their music!!

Everything about this song is perfect. The wildly shifting moods and time signatures, the incredible instrumental and vocal performances, the simple yet beautifully introspective lyrics...it has it all. It's my favorite song by SOAD and possibly my favorite song of all time.
SOAD must be one of the most versatile bands of all time, the fact that none of there songs are alike yet all of them are so perfect and intricate.
Been a metal fan for 20 and more years, SOAD do things with tempo and moods that only the greatest of the genre have achieved. Not necessarily complicated, but tasteful and well placed, and incredibly, wildly dynamic. Helps to have one of the tightest rhythm sections ever, a guitar player all about the sound and the songs and a truly gifted vocalist.

This is one of my all time favorites from them because of the way everything just works together so perfectly in this song. And this is present in all their songs but it’s especially noticeable here. From the kickass guitar and bass with the percussion to the incredible intertwining of Daron and Serj’s voices just coming together beautifully. I’ve never heard a band whose members voices could come together quite as incredibly gracefully as SOAD. As a musician of 9 years, their writing and attention to detail is fucking incredible.
And the fact that Daron can sing his heart out while playing super fast riffs is also amazing

This band still towers over most of what comes out anymore. Ive had these guys on my playlist for prolly 15+ years now. Sad that their creative differences get in the way but theyll always be in my hall of fame.
Creative differences aside, I saw them last year in Las Vegas at Sick New World Concert, also my birthday, Best Birthday EVER! Not gonna lie the program was full of so many bands I wanted/needed to see, at times I was overwhelmed and leaking awsomeness from my eyes, and SOAD was the last band of the night. Amazing show! Definitely a Bucket List Show for me.

Dear confused and frustrated drummers and guitarists. I THINK this is right after listening for an hour...
Intro: Straight 5/4 counted 1-2-3-4-5 downbeat on 1.
1st Verse: 5/4 but sounds like syncopated 8th notes, it's damn hard to get into the groove, almost seems like the count is on an upbeat, but I was still able to count it as bars of 1-2-3-4-5, 1-2-3-4-5 or just as effectively (and perhaps moreso) as 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4 (2 bars of 5/4)....however...
When Serj says "Are You" there are two bars of 3/4 snuck in there, before the count returns to 5....and then, when he says "are you Dreaming" that is four bars of 3/4 snuck in, counted 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, before returning to the 5 count...
But Then...for the pre-chorus, for the "dreaming ...the night... dreaming...all right" I count as 6/8 (1-2-3-4-5-6) (four rotations total)
Now the choruses, I get straight 4/4 with a triplet feel, but there's a tempo change.
The slow dramatic chorus can be counted in 4/4 at 120bps.
The fast aggressive chorus at the end counts as 4/4 at about 170bpm. (yes, I had to dig out my metronome...lol)
The 4/4 sounds SOOOO heavy against the weird jarring 5 rhythms... If John came up with this count, he's a legend. Even moreso if Darren cooked this song up and John had to figure out how to drum it. Sometimes guitar players write shit and the drummer is like "fuck you man..."
*EDIT 8/29/21* : After replying to a comment below questioning my counts, I realized the following:
The little acoustic interlude Darron plays during the drum rest near the intro and before V1... That sort of DOES count as 9/8. *But!* if you are counting the song in the same tempo as the heavy intro using a DAW or a metronome, it still elapses a full 10 beats before drums come back in for the verse to begin... So what I'm guessing is that John recorded the song intro and verse to a 5/4 click or counted 5/4 in his head and Darron just forced in his little riff of 9 counts in the gap, but at a slightly slower tempo. The whole debate here might come down to mere human error! So they could be playing in contradictory timings attempting (or perhaps purely accidentally) forming an accidental polymeter or more likely an accidental polyrhythm. I think that is most likely here, hence a guitar player might want to count that acoustic lick in a laggy 9/8 but all other musicians would want to be counting a 5/4 consistent with the intro tempo. That would also explain the brief moment of silence and the jarring feel as the acoustic phrase ends and the verse begins with the first drum sound and Serj singing the first note.

I just tried playing it just now on both my guitar and drums and I can count 5/4 with the two bars of 3/4 at the end of each stanza pretty reliably. When I try counting it as 9, I would be counting it as either three groups of three, which doesn't work at all, or two groups of 4 plus an extra count every other time so 4+5/4 or 5+4/4. And neither of those seem to fit the groove either... I just cannot get that to count out properly without lagging. That lag is there because it should be a tenth beat. Hence 5/4... but, Darron isn't in time for the clean guitar ditty at the intro... more on that in a moment. First the structure I programmed into a DAW to double check myself:

9/8 is notoriously hard to count in when it is not set up in 3 groups of 3 triplets, which may be why it feels weird to play the groove in it, especially when you consider the much more natural and much more common rhythm for 5/4 which is extremely similar that comes right before it.
The 3+3+2+2 rhythm in 5/4 is found in the Mission-Impossible Theme, Take Five, and this song's intro riff, and just feels better than cutting one of the eighth notes out completely.

The extreme dynamics of the arrangement throughout the entire song, Serj and Daron’s voices together, Schavo...you know what I mean, he projects so much in his facial expressions alone.
