  • How to replace crank on folding bike, how to make your folding bike go faster!
    In this video I show how to make your folding bike go faster by replacing the crank cog. I replace the crank with parts from a mountain bike to increase the speed by 20%. This folding bike modification is very easy and can be done with simple tools!

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    First step is to get a 14mm socket and remove the bolt in the center of the crank, once removed you can fit the crank pulling tool. Use an adjustable wrench to turn the crank pulling tool until it pulls the crank arm free from the bottom bracket.
    Now repeat the process on the donor bike and swap the parts. Fit crank arms by tapping onto bottom bracket and then replace the bolt. Now your cheap second hand folding bike is as fast as a high end expensive folding bike!

    I'm going to do the same mod I've got an E-bike here in the UK similar to the tern called e plus city folder with a 250 watt front hub and find my legs are turning really fast and not being able to go faster than the motor that cuts out at 15 mph so will be trying 48 teeth crank and hopefully that will give me more top speed thanks for the information 🚴‍♂

    I went the other direction, as it's quite HILLY where I live. My Dahon D7 had 52 teeth on the front chainring and it was just about useless trying to climb these hills around here with THAT... those big long hills were awful-- fuggetaboutit. I went down to 44 teeth and what a difference. I can climb the big hills and the bike is a pleasure to ride. I'd sacrifice top speed for hill climbing ability any day, as I'm more into comfort than speed and I ride for transportation, not necessarily exercise. A lot has to do with where you live, whether it's flat or hilly. I later got an additional 20" folding bike - a Camp Thunderbolt with two chain rings on the front, 52 and 44 teeth - and it's the most versatile. It's my daily rider.

      You could have upgraded to an 11 gear 10 to 42 set. And changed up your wheel set to 451 prolite aero wheels. With Schwalbe 1.1" racing tires.And you would have got 20 mph plus on the flat. And be able to climb hills like a boss with the 52--42 gearing ratio. And lighter bike from the upgrades.
      That's what my friend did with his Dahon D7. And I'm doing it with my Carrera intercity budget folder. Just the wheel set alone has shaved 3.5lbs off the bikes weight. From 29lbs to 25.5lbs just on wheels.
      This is the beauty of upgrades. You can turn a budget bike into a superbike at your own pace financially. And it's so much fun to see the improvements in performance.

      @@fender1000100 Yeah yeah, I could have spent a ton of money on upgrades, but I'm happy with what I've got -- Camp Thunderbolt 20'' folding bike. Two chain rings on the front, 8 gears in the back, along with disc brakes, milk crate on the back and anther rack in front. All at an affordable price.I'd Have to count the number of teeth, I forgot, but it gets me around just fine and there's lots of hills here in Atlanta. I ride my Dahon sometimes too as a backup. • @darthbiker2311
    @darthbiker2311 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did exactly that with my 20 inch folder and a friend's spare 3x crank. It's annoying because downshifting on the rear sprocket causes the chain to drop to a lower gear on the crank. Now I'm looking for either a working FD and shifter or a single speed 52t crank.

    • @hobocyclist
      @hobocyclist  ปีที่แล้ว

      Aha yes this could happen shifting down depending on design of the crank & gear ratio on cluster. I find it useful to have the other smaller gear on the crank at times for hill climbing even if I have to shift it manually!! 👍⛺️🚲🌴😉

    *I have a Driveline 75 tooth chainring on my 20" folding bike and the difference between the stock 44 tooth and the driveline 75 tooth is night and day. Top speed giving it all I've got when bike was stock: 13mph, after 75T chainring: 40mph. It depends, you can get the correct length by wrapping it around the front cog and the largest rear cog then add a few links. I always like to leave 2 or 3 extra links in just in case the chain breaks when I'm out and have to do an emergency repair.

  • @k_s.m

    that's only half of the truth. First, You don't need three cogs in front, so You could have taken the other two off, as there is no front derailleur. second, and most importantly - if You make the front cog bigger, You lose better gear ratio for going uphill....so it's an upgrade that makes You get something but You also lose something.
