    They're not wrong about it being an icon. I've never been there but that tower is the first thing that comes to my mind when I think Dallas.

    I have been up there once in all my years. I think its a nice structure. And it lights up at night.

    My band (The Suspects) played up there in the revolving restaurant New Years Eve in 1987. Great crowd and good food! What a fun experience it was to be up high in the sky and to see the city all around at night.

    When I was younger and growing up in Dallas, the skyline landmarks were the Mercantile Building (with the giant clock), and the Magnolia Building (with the iconic Mobil Oil Co Pegasus)...but when they built the tower, I always thought it looked like a dandelion seedhead just waiting to be blown...I also remember that it originally had the radio station KOAX-FM studio in it (one of my favorite stations)...

      Wow thanks for sharing that. What years was that your referring to, Tht those were the only two iconic buildings in Dallas?? Were you here when the Bank of America building (tall GREEN GiANT) was built? I’m 31 born and raised in West Dallas and I love hearing about my city’s history especially the skyline; I can easily see it from my house, either from Inside or anywhere outside my house.I Love it here❤ never leaving or moving 🙅🏻

    I lived in Irving in the early 1970s and again in the early 1980s as a teenager, and remember both the tower and the arena very well. I am sad to hear that Reunion Arena has been demolished and is gone now; I'm fairly sure I recall attending a concert or two there. Never visited the tower, though; I should probably do something about that next time I'm there.
    The tower was a prop in PBS' made-for-TV movie adaptation of Ursula LeGuin's THE LATHE OF HEAVEN in 1980. In the film, it was supposed to be a transmitter to remake reality. Several other DFW-area locations were also used.

  • @swinde
    @swinde 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    This complex with the tower was used in the PBS Movie "The Lathe of Heaven" by Ursula K Le Guin. Science fiction about a young man that survived a Nuclear blast nearby in Portland, OR and wakes up, but as days go by he finds that his dreams while sleeping become reality. It is really done well and only has three main characters. When a Doctor specializing in dreams discovers his power he attempts to control it for the betterment of mankind, but each try goes horribly wrong. The climax of the movie involves this tower as a machine used to help control the dreams.

    At 50 seconds, you'll see my Dad's business. Just above and to the left of Union Station. When he built the building, they wouldn't run him electricity as he was on the other side of the triple underpass. So he put in a diesel generator and ran off that until they forced him to sell to make way for the hotel. We moved to the new location the summer of 1977

    Guys...listen up , the tower Restraunt is VERY nice and cozy, but I advise you never to take a date up there. It's very expensive and first class, but no woman deserves that type of attention UNLESS she has proved to you that she is worthy enough to marry you. I would proudly take my wife up there if she desired to go. But don't try to impress just to look good.
