    So just as a note: Rotala Rotundifoilia comes in some surprising varieties. Blood red, Red, Orange juice, Green, H'ra are just some of them. If you bought some of these for their intense reddish colors and are just growing under normal light levels, and not watching your ferts, and not injecting CO2, the best you can hope for is a light pinkish hue.
    For that matter the basic Rotala Rotundifolia, even the very common "green variety" is going to color up a little reddish under stronger light. I've been growing Rotala from way back in 1989 back when it was uncommon at most LFS, and it only grew with reddish tints when under a phosphored, Mercury vapor bulb, light CO2 injection with Theil Aquatech's Laterite substrate additive. This is actually best used with Dupla cable substrate heating. which is pretty 1990's tech level that no-one's bothering with nowadays. The 2 Hour Aquarist's website is pretty good for getting most of the information about growing strongly red plants. Note that forcing red growth using the lean Nitrate regime has you running the raw edge of starving your plants for Nitrogen. You need to be aware of this and measure and dose Nitrate carefully checking at least every week. Those of you living in the Pac NorWest should note that it's not usual to have GH rich water if all of your water supplies are surface based, snow melt from Volcanic mountains or rain fed rivers tend to be really soft and you should at least use Seachem's GH additive Equilibrium as it adds a little Iron Gluconate. Iron Gluconate is safe for shrimp and provides chealated Iron for your plants. Measure your GH if your water is soft, Buy a cheap Water conductivity pen meter. and try to keep your water GH close to about 120 to 200 GH.

Plants, including a few red unidentified ones are loving life. Monthly trimmings on some breaking the water at top of the tank. Always replant top cuttings back into substrate. No Co2, no ferts. 1” Happy Frog ocean/forest potting soil capped with2-2.5” white pool sand , several large pieces mopani wood and river rocks, leaves.

    Thanks for the vid! Understanding how to limit nutrients for dense, colorful growth has been a real learning process for me and your video reflects my experiences. Currently I'm unable to access CO2 injection to bring out reds in my Alternanthera Reineckii planting, but I tried Seachem's Flourish Excel and saw visibly stronger reds. Another slam dunk vid. Thank you! I do have a question for you... Sightly on and off topic... Yrs ago I stumbled into killifish and then the yellow wonder killi and, I have all kinds of issues keeping plants with them because they require a FULL cover. If every SINGLE hole isn't entirely covered I'll sadly find a dried fish on the floor. They love me despite being amazing like you are, and breed without assistance. I have to keep them away from anything small. They ate all my shrimp once for instance! Lol they're so aggressive, but I want to give them the best home I can. How do you balance a planted, covered aquarium? Any recommendations or special ideas? I have a couple mystery plants that stay alive, beyond that nada. But my other aquariums do really well. I know this is a loaded question, I'm sorry! And, thanks for all you do Alexander!

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmmm well strong lights... and drill some air exchange holes.. keep the water level 2 inches below the rim or lid...it may do the trick...i just keep the water 2 or 3 inches lower sometimes and have floating plants so they dont get any ideas looking up... also painting the 3 sides solid helps...they startle so easily

      aww I'm terribly sorry for your loss. Sadly, 3yrs sounds about right for the wonder yellow. You did a good job of being consistent. I've noticed, besides not living long & being very smart, killifish are really sensitive to temperature. Losing power for a day or two caused me to lose 1 older yellow male(4 baby male blue notho & 3 younger female clown kili! With zero additional losses of all other species or opposite sexes of the same fish listed, no matter the ages! So, pretty sensitive).
      If you're curious... The way my yellows reproduce seems to be a small, but important list; Having naturally amazing water in Oregon. It's almost always 6.8-7.0 where I am without treatment. I always leave replacement water out for several days(not sure how effective this part is, but less crap in the water the better imo). Soft, bushy plants with layered leaves at the base(like a small group of 3-4 small & med swords) for the eggs to land into as they mate and quite literally "pop out" one egg with each mating ritual. Have no bottom-grazing fish(like loaches) that might locate/eat the eggs. And finally, regular fresh or frozen food. I find I also have to do normal 20% water changes without stocking a cleanup crew. With a grouping of plants yellows lean against the plants while mating and the egg can settle naturally into the growing plants. The fry then have a nice hiding place once hatched. --They will eat their young when they're extra small, so it seems to be key.
      I taught mine to feed from my plant tweezers and out of a bloodworm pyramid turned sideways in my hand. It's too hard to feed 7/8/9 of them well without some kind of system. With luck every few months I find a baby eventually make it's way out of the plants for larger chunks of food and after a little growing integrate into socializing with the group. This yr I had to put a couple of loaches in for crowd/birth control. It helped with reduce my water changes, too.
      There is a fun video you may be able to find that illustrates just how high and accurately they jump out of the water AND how giii-normous yellow's mouths are. --A yellow male consumes a small cricket off of a looming stick/branch. Incredible!
      Or you can look up how to breed with a breeding mop. Though, I've never done it, I've seen vids claiming it works. Just a real pain imo.
      They are dazzling creatures. I hope you feel better about Banana & figure out that leech issue.😨 I have a silly fear of them since the release of Stand By Me when I was a child. Lol

      Well for most i just simply keep the nitrates at 0 to 5ppm and always have enough plants or filtration that im not exceeding that... thats what most aquascaped tanks do for presentation week/weeks... but yes, some places like the barr report or sites dedicaded to EI dosing will say 20ppm or 10 or 0 etc for specific plants and then note what the co2 rate should be for a given photo comparission. There is never really a set in stone answer for each plant, because if you have enough light, its all possible basically with that and co2.

    Here is a word for you and I would link this word to the bog filter concept. The word is mychorhizae (sp.?). It is a cohabitation and there is a better word but it’s not coming to me but it starts with plant roots. The roots form structure and fungus grows on them which helps to gather and process materials. What is the word, it will come to me, it means cohabitation plus they help each other? Anyway feel free to use the mychorhizae word (which autocomplete seems to not recognize) after you look it up, you will see, it is a pretty cool concept.

I feel like too much iron is a recipe for black beard algae.

    • @Fishtory

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  ปีที่แล้ว

      I could try... but there's a reason why it's hard to find info on it...and that's because it has nkt been proven viable at small sizes.
      Almost all the research is done on large scale implementation. Also if you are refering to Mr. Novak- in all my research as well as 3 other phds who are active professors in the USA, we cant find anything peer reviewed or formally published by him. He wont reveal where or when he got a phd and he is not registered as a phd or dr. Of anything that a group of us tried to researched. Id really love to have him prove he has any credentials actually.
      Because other than his words, we have no aquarium info on it. That is to say,- it may clog and simply become an aerobic denitrifying cycle like a filterless bog tank or like LRBs.

Actually, 'A Secret History Living In Your Aquarium' sounds more like a description, than a brand title. You could even make the 'Fishtory' into a logo made of fish/aquaculture items/Ichthyology items/aquarium items/etc. Just don't use Phish.
    I would still use the whole title, and read it off at the beginning of every video, to maintain consistency as well as transition the collected property into the knickname 'Fishtory'. The property is still associated with A Secret History Living In Your Aquarium that can be searched and it's own history searched/researched, while making it easier to compile it into a knickname/brand name.

      Decent LED's should not strobe, maybe as a pulse width solution to regulating their brightness is how an aquarium lighting manufacturer does this nowadays. The thing is, standard, non electronic ballast CFL Flourescents (back in the day.) also strobed weakly, and Metal Halide HP and Mercury vapor lamps really strobed. We have it really easy for decent lighting now.

    I buy Hardwood Lump Charcoal with no additives and I add it to everything.
    I put it in my aquariums and terrariums and even in water bowls in terrariums.
    Some creatures will nibble on it, and it absorbs odors and stuff, but also plants can supposedly use it as a carbon source.
    1 big bag of charcoal, can be used for a huge amount of things.
    I only bought 1 bag and I still have some left and I've been using it for 5-10 years.
    Yes, activated carbon is better and more effective, but activated carbon cost a LOT more money and is only a little better, due to consistent small shapes and slightly greater surface area.
    If you have a small aquarium filter and need to have carbon in the filter, then you should stick with activated carbon.
    If you are wanting to add the benefits of activated carbon, but DON'T NEED to have it and you have a lot of space to put it, then hardwood lump charcoal is likely just fine and much much cheaper.
    Of course, if you have something higher up on the food-chain, like a pet lizard or snake or something, you probably don't want them to accidentally rub their eye on the charcoal.
    For any detritivore species you raise (land or aquatic), I see no reason to not include some hardwood lump charcoal or activated carbon.
    That's just my opinion.

    Howaya man, I'm looking to put a red at the back of the centre of 1 of my tanks where I have sessiflora both sides forming an arch over a winding path I have in the tank, it raises ( 3d so to speak) in other words - it will give the impression that the path continues on.. I hope you can figure that out Alex 😬, long story boring - - if it was ONE red plant,WHICH would you use... Rotala??
    Thanks Alex... Sorry if I confused the sh1t out of you 🤦‍♂️👍👍

    Hi, from India. Can we put iron rod directly in the water. Say some planter stand, or a a pot made of iron/steel.
    Secondly, if we hv lots of fishes , they will produce lots of co2 in the water column… so adding too many fishes over time helps dealing with co2 deficiency?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes adding fish, food of plants eventually leads to decay and chemical reactions that eventually is incorporated into the systems carbon cycled ecology
