I want to be a member so bad, The plight of the college student; gaining more and more debt while being too busy for a job. Thus not having the money for subscriptions and food at the same time. keep up the good work though, the story of Nepoleon's hero (Prince Edward) is a very good target for documentary content.
I remember that I was really surprised when this first came out, a year ago (for members). Not because of anything in it, but because I had thought more people would vote for the Russian Civil War videos than for this. It's a fascinating series nonetheless, I just wasn't expecting it.
I credit it to a trending yearning (mostly among right wing Christians) to revive the Catholic monarchies of Europe, as a response to left wing secular overreach. This war was an obvious catalyst for the separation of church and state in the West.
I actually heard once (I don’t know if this is true) but this 2 wars at some were very close to merge as France and Swrden by that time had good relationships and helped each other during the thirty years war against Spain, if that was the case, it would have been an enormous war
This series is one of my favorites; the many interesting relationships between historical actors like the Sun King and Eugene of Savoy, as well as the geopolitical implications of this conflict, are laid bare in this series in eloquent manner. Another excellent Kings and Generals project!
The main reason Louis wanted to have Bourbons on Spanish throne was to end France's encirclement by the Habsburgs as they controlled Spain, Northern Italy, Germany and the Netherlands meaning France was surrounded, as this had been a French strategic aim for centuries. Louis used pretexts to make France's border in Flanders stronger and more defensible from a Spanish/Imperial invasion using Vauban to build forts to protect the frontier. He used Turenne to make France's frontier on the Rhine to use a natural frontier to protect from Imperial invasions. The Spanish/HRE had invaded France from the low countries and Burgundy multiple times during the 16th and 17th centuries. I don't think a narrative of claiming Louis xiv wanted to just conquer the whole of Europe etc is remotely realistic which you occasionaly hear from biased British "historians".
No modern British historian would argue that. It’s true that Louis never imagined conquering all of Europe-that would be delusional. However, he was more aggressive early in his reign. During the War of Devolution and the Franco-Dutch War, he attempted to seize the Spanish Netherlands. Had he succeeded, France could have snowballed. However, Louis failed in this objective, and his later policies during the Nine Years' War and the War of the Spanish Succession were more defensive in nature. Nevertheless, they appeared highly aggressive, giving his enemies the impression that he sought to dominate all of Europe.
There is a theory that the Treaty of Utrecht no longer precludes King Felipe of Spain (who has the greatest claim to the French crown sans this treaty) from ruling as France’s monarch, since the treaty was written for the previous monarchy, which has since been abolished.
2:15 Philip I of Castile didn’t die under mysterious circumstances or alleged poisoning from his father-in-law. He died of illness he contracted while traveling to Spain from the Low Countries.
Seven Years War is just mini world war, but it is previously consider as WW0 because Both French Empire and Bristh Empire has its various colonial military almost everywhere around the globe, expect China, Korea and Japan.
04:25 Also the Catalan Revolt (aka Reaper's War) took place in 1640 that somewhat mirrored the steps of Portugal for the Principality of Catalonia to break free from the Spanish Monarchy. Also worth to mention that despite the "dynastic union" of 1469, each crowns kept their own institutions and laws (until 1714-1715) which the successive Hispanic monarchs should pledge respect/allegiance, so no Castilian institutions or constitutions or laws had power or effect on the lands of the Crown of Aragon.
One of my favorite eras of history. Love looking at maps of this time period and seeing just how much territory the Hapsburg’s controlled. Thank you for making this free to the public, you are doing the world of history a great service.
You keep getting the Portuguese flag of this time wrong. The blue and white flag you display was adopted in the 1830s by Maria II of Portugal. The flag at the time of the war of Spanish sucession wouldn't have included the blue part but would have a had a completely white field.
I have no idea why but I have been very interested in this war, I watched many of your other vids…but this is the perfect video at the perfect moment for me. So strange.
Amazing. It looks interesting, guys. Would be amazing to see the conquest of the Americas. From the Spanish conquest of Mayans, Aztecs, amazonic indigenous groups, to the English, French, and Portuguese conquest of their imperial territories. And after that go with the american virroys and empires, and go to rhe independences. I think all those topics would be pretty epic. Very few channel have spoken about it issue. And none with the level of details and work that you guys give to the videos. My congratulations. Keep up the good work, chickos.
Correction: Charles II's mother, Mariana of Austria died in 1696. The Pro-Austrian faction was led by his wife the similarly named Maria Anna of Neuburg, sister to the Empress Eleonore and aunt of Archduke Charles.
We had history education about Austrian empire etc in school but...when I see it now set in broader context it is so much better because our education left so many things out as if Habsburg empire only waged war against Ottoman empire and then against Prussia and as if its territories were only set in Central Europe...
Good summery. One minor note. France did not gain Alsace during the Nine Years' War. Louis had occupied it during the Franco-Dutch War and the Nine Years' War peace treaty only confirmed that gain. The NYW ended with France exclusively ceding territory, not gaining it
Archduke Charles would later become involved in two other Wars of Succession, as Emperor Charles VI, one in Poland and the other after his death, which led to the War of the Austrian Succession.
What is the point of pronouncing "Bourbon" to the point it's almost unrecognizable to the English speaker but not even nothering to check the pronunciation of any African, Arabic, Chinese, Indian, or Turkic name???
Isn't it ironic that the deaths of the members of the House of Habsburg led to two global wars in our world's history? Also, is it wrong to arrange global conflicts like this? You guys should give some focus on the habsburgs LIBERATING hungary from the ottomans as it was responsible for the rise of Eugene of Savoy, one of the best generals of the century, as well as maybe a series on the wars of latin america like the independence wars or the triple alliance
Ngl I'm still not sure why the war wasn't considered a world war, i mean in literal terms it is, i guess to make it a world war is what in terms of that affected the world in more ways than that

I'm brazilian and I find this very Interesting history. But in the meanwhile I couldn't help not to think, in this dispute by foreign diynasties over the spanish throne, why couldn't the spaniards like, stop being only observers of the need for power over them and come up with their own dynasty? Is that too crazy to think? Like, it seems like the spaniards are merely chess pawns in their own country. The spanish are pathetic.
I don't completely understand what you're asking but I think you're assuming nationalism already existed but it didn't. People really didn't care where their monarchy came from. They just went about living their lives while the upper class, wherever they were from, did whatever they wanted.
The Catalan nation still suffer's from the military ocupation by castille of our land in this war, and the abolishment of our institutions and constitutions, and Europe oldest parliament.
The oldest parlament in Europe is not in Catalonia, it's in Leon. It's recognized by the UNESCO. Catalonia as a nation didnt even exist at this period. It was a bunch of counties that fought each other under the crown of Aragon. It was not under Castillian occupation as both Kingdoms remained split till very late. Suffer? Wtf are you talking about?! Thanks to Barcelona being in Spain it became one of the Engines of Spain... Stupid Catalan independist lol.

Finally! The War of the Spanish Succession..
Excellent as always, I love these "lesser known" conflicts. It really helps set the stage for the World Wars that follow.
It really says a lot that such an important conflict is considered "lesser known". I can't help but notice how invisibilized Spain's history is.
