Tyler even mentions in his songs that he notices bandwagoners wearing Supreme clothing that don't even skate. I doubt the longevity of Supreme and all hype brands die out - in a young persons zoomer world you wouldn't be caught dead wearing Neff, Obey, or Diamond Supply Co in 2020
Supreme seems to be the brand that survived out of those because of scarcity. All drops are still somewhat limited, compared to how mass produced Neff, Diamond Supply, Obey, The Hundreds, etc are. 2020 and Supreme bogos still resell for quite a bit. Less than before because they upped the production, but still more than 3x retail. Most of the other products end up being lunch money at best. I think they will still remain this way for a while because they don't really overproduce their products. That scarcity remains.

I’m 46 years old and I’ve absolutely never heard of this brand, and apparently couldn’t care less. Your video, as always, was awesomely informative. It’s just the brand I couldn’t care less about. Not that I didn’t enjoy learning about it.
I'm 26 and the only reason I'm watching this video is because I'm aware of the brand. Not because I like them, but because I used to see them everywhere when I was in college.
A lot it is also due to celebries rocking their clothes, causing hype to rise even more. Many rappers treat Supreme as a luxury to flex on others, thus others want to buy Supreme thinking it in return makes them cool.
I live in Southern California there's a store out here when you come across the collectors or "HYPE BEAST" they all have a very distinctive personality to them if you have come across one you know what I'm talking about not the most pleasant people to be around I don't get it and I never will get it

Supreme is a strange one for sure. On the surface, i really like their stuff. The logo is nice to look at, the products they produce are awesome. But i just CAN NOT STAND the "hype beast" market of materialistic shit. I have a ton of expensive hobbies and have wasted money on shit that i just want. but i'll never be able to justify tracking down anything of their stuff.

Great video. I grew up a skateboarder in and around NYC in the 90s and early 2000s and Supreme has to me as far back as I can remember been for trust funder wannabes who tried and failed at skating and thought they could get the coolness and underground subculture credibility associated with it without having to do anything other than spend their parents' money. Their current success was built largely on successfully triangulating to this audience. People outside the skate world don't realize, poser skaters are a HUGE market - just look at how long Nike fought to get legitimacy within skateboarding and how many random people you see wearing Thrasher Magazine shirts.
Hype + Culture = Supreme . What’s even more amazing to me is that their logo and style hasn’t changed much since the beginning. Somehow they remained relevant without changing. Instead of following trends they kept it simple with a red box logo. Supreme is the quintessential streetwear brand. Without Supreme, there’s no Off-White.
The DID change, though. They used to mostly sell skateboards, wheels, bearings, and trucks. They shifted focus to clothing when that began selling far better even to people who don't skate.
I miss when the street wear actually included skateboarding and felt more organic, now it’s just a bunch of trendy IG models trying to re sell or waiting in long ass lines for collab or original drops

@@justnative9370 Hype and collectibility are basically the same thing in this case. When the hype dies down, the price will drop, and eventually people won't care anymore because the "prestige" will be gone. It's kind of pointless to collect something if it's not going to stay popular, after all.
The bubble has already begun to deflate, as of last year things have been going downhill. Less and less items sell out with every release, resale prices have generally dropped, and only their original "heirloom" peices have really maintained their value. In the last month, they have lost nearly 20,000 Instagram followers, as time goes on that will continue to decrease. The reason for this is likely due to the fact that "streetwear" (the sub genre of fashion that supreme fits in, home to many other brands such as BAPE), although once extremely popular, is beginning to die down at a significant rate. The market itself is slowly shifting towards a new hybrid sub genre, a mix between "high fashion" and what people previously considered "streetwear", as I guess streetwear itself had become a "beating the dead horse" type situation. Brands such as "OFF-WHITE" are ones that fit perfectly into this new unnamed hybrid genre, and in my opinion will have much more longevity in comparison to Supreme and their artificial hype train. Other brands that would fit well into this genre would be "VETEMENTS", ""Midnight Studios", "Chrome Hearts", "Siberia Hills", "Alyx" etc. They all feature "street wear-esque" aesthetics, but run a "high fashion" business model, as I hardly see any new and successful clothing brands refer to themselves as "streetwear" (word itself has become cringe at this point).
When I lived in Cameroon, I found a pair of Superme (sic) slippers. I loved them. They included the claim "This is a very good pair of slippers" on them and even had an expiration date (?). Felt way more unique then the genuine branded stuff, and cost me less than a dollar to buy.
I always thought Supreme was outrageously priced but honestly their clothes are fairly priced retail. You just have to be ready right at the drop and get t-shirts around ~$50. (Including shipping & tax)

Jonathan Böcker $50 shirts make sense depending on what kind of person you are. There is nothing wrong with not spending more than $50 on something like a basic t-shirt. But there is also people who wouldn’t mind spending that amount for something they’ll often wear, making it more worth it to them especially if they by less clothes than the typical person.
I’ve followed Supreme since 2014. I started buying it in 2016. I only have kept a few items that I really liked but I have always seen it as a side hustle. If someone is willing to pay a crazy price for something that I can get for way less, I will take that profit every time. What’s interesting is that most of the items in a season are not very lucrative in the short term. Certain items are like stocks. They appreciate over time. It’s up to me to decide what items to go for, how long to hold them, etc. That’s not even mentioning how difficult it is to even purchase these items. This was touched on in the video a bit but I was surprised not to see a segment on botting. It has plagued the brand for years but it seems to only be getting worse. Bots are what they sound like. They are programs on your computer that do all of the work for you and check out insanely fast. As a real person repeatedly refreshing the site at drop time on Thursday morning, I am at a significant disadvantage. I often have to avoid certain items because it is literally physically impossible for me to check out. Over the past few years, I’ve made about $5000 selling Supreme items. It’s a somewhat easy hustle as long as you do the research and understand what you are capable of. Hope that helps anyone who was curious 👌

@8:13 Ah there's no lottery. It's all first come first serve. It's just at this point there's so many bots that buy out stock within seconds. If I recall, that stapler sold out in ~5 seconds. What makes it difficult for manual users is that the site will be laggy upon drop time and there are no cart holds. So if you're lucky to add it to cart, it take about a minute for you to even load up the page for your cart anyway. But by then bots buy it all in the time it took for you to load the home page. Even in person, there are bots that get people the best places in line too. Someone's best bet is to honestly try to sign up to go in store

I just believe that other brands will be taking over in the next few years. That doesn’t mean that supreme isn’t successful now I just think the hype has died down (compare SS18 / FW17 to SS20).

I've always loved some of supreme's really artistic designs, music refrences etc, I am not a huge fan of the resale market and all that bullshit becasue it prevents people who actually want something from getting it. People seem to think they only produce the box logo branded stuff but their design history is acutally way more complex than that.
I remember hearing about Supreme in the mid 90's and seeing the sticker in Hackers in 1995. It wasn't long after that I started thinking the brand was awful because it was on all sorts of stupid stuff like you mentioned in the video. Supreme seems to be the brand that survived out of those because of scarcity. All drops are still somewhat limited, compared to how mass produced Neff, Diamond Supply, Obey, The Hundreds, etc are.
2020 and Supreme bogos still resell for quite a bit. Less than before because they upped the production, but still more than 3x retail. Most of the other products end up being lunch money at best.
I think they will still remain this way for a while because they don't really overproduce their products. That scarcity remains.
Skate brands always break into mainstream. Airwalk shows come to mind.

I grew up a skateboarder in and around NYC in the 90s and early 2000s and Supreme has to me as far back as I can remember been for trust funder wannabes who tried and failed at skating and thought they could get the coolness and underground subculture credibility associated with it without having to do anything other than spend their parents' money. Their current success was built largely on successfully triangulating to this audience. People outside the skate world don't realize, poser skaters are a HUGE market - just look at how long Nike fought to get legitimacy within skateboarding and how many random people you see wearing Thrasher Magazine shirts.

Hype + Culture = Supreme . What’s even more amazing to me is that their logo and style hasn’t changed much since the beginning. Somehow they remained relevant without changing. Instead of following trends they kept it simple with a red box logo. Supreme is the quintessential streetwear brand. Without Supreme, there’s no Off-White.
The DID change, though. They used to mostly sell skateboards, wheels, bearings, and trucks. They shifted focus to clothing when that began selling far better even to people who don't skate.

@@justnative9370 Hype and collectibility are basically the same thing in this case. When the hype dies down, the price will drop, and eventually people won't care anymore because the "prestige" will be gone. It's kind of pointless to collect something if it's not going to stay popular, after all.
The bubble has already begun to deflate, as of last year things have been going downhill. Less and less items sell out with every release, resale prices have generally dropped, and only their original "heirloom" peices have really maintained their value. In the last month, they have lost nearly 20,000 Instagram followers, as time goes on that will continue to decrease.
The reason for this is likely due to the fact that "streetwear" (the sub genre of fashion that supreme fits in, home to many other brands such as BAPE), although once extremely popular, is beginning to die down at a significant rate. The market itself is slowly shifting towards a new hybrid sub genre, a mix between "high fashion" and what people previously considered "streetwear", as I guess streetwear itself had become a "beating the dead horse" type situation. Brands such as "OFF-WHITE" are ones that fit perfectly into this new unnamed hybrid genre, and in my opinion will have much more longevity in comparison to Supreme and their artificial hype train. Other brands that would fit well into this genre would be "VETEMENTS", ""Midnight Studios", "Chrome Hearts", "Siberia Hills", "Alyx" etc. They all feature "street wear-esque" aesthetics, but run a "high fashion" business model, as I hardly see any new and successful clothing brands refer to themselves as "streetwear" (word itself has become cringe at this point).

I’ve followed Supreme since 2014. I started buying it in 2016. I only have kept a few items that I really liked but I have always seen it as a side hustle. If someone is willing to pay a crazy price for something that I can get for way less, I will take that profit every time. What’s interesting is that most of the items in a season are not very lucrative in the short term. Certain items are like stocks. They appreciate over time. It’s up to me to decide what items to go for, how long to hold them, etc. That’s not even mentioning how difficult it is to even purchase these items. This was touched on in the video a bit but I was surprised not to see a segment on botting. It has plagued the brand for years but it seems to only be getting worse. Bots are what they sound like. They are programs on your computer that do all of the work for you and check out insanely fast. As a real person repeatedly refreshing the site at drop time on Thursday morning, I am at a significant disadvantage. I often have to avoid certain items because it is literally physically impossible for me to check out. Over the past few years, I’ve made about $5000 selling Supreme items. It’s a somewhat easy hustle as long as you do the research and understand what you are capable of. Hope that helps anyone who was curious 👌

@8:13 Ah there's no lottery. It's all first come first serve. It's just at this point there's so many bots that buy out stock within seconds. If I recall, that stapler sold out in ~5 seconds. What makes it difficult for manual users is that the site will be laggy upon drop time and there are no cart holds. So if you're lucky to add it to cart, it take about a minute for you to even load up the page for your cart anyway. But by then bots buy it all in the time it took for you to load the home page.
Even in person, there are bots that get people the best places in line too. Someone's best bet is to honestly try to sign up to go in store

I've always loved some of supreme's really artistic designs, music refrences etc, I am not a huge fan of the resale market and all that bullshit becasue it prevents people who actually want something from getting it. People seem to think they only produce the box logo branded stuff but their design history is acutally way more complex than that.
I remember hearing about Supreme in the mid 90's and seeing the sticker in Hackers in 1995. It wasn't long after that I started thinking the brand was awful because it was on all sorts of stupid stuff like you mentioned in the video. I'm honestly surprised they've been around as long as they have been!
