Ok, so I know this is supposed to be some Black collegial thing, but I am finding some of what he says a little problematic. 1) 'Interestingly, not all Rastas smoke'...Okay, Rastafari is not about smoking! So, I don't get this. 2) 'Turns out there are only 10,000 Rastas in Jamaica. That's not enough to fill up a street in Lagos'. Excuse me, Jamaica has just about 3 million people living on the island. Nigeria, by comparison, has 300 million people. The scale of the comparison is absolutely ridiculous! (Rasta is also not a hairstyle, so that number is also wrong!). 3) Practising Rastafarians are vegetarian/vegan and don't take salt in their meals. I hope everyone knows this! 4) The 'special plants' are sacramentals. There is nothing 'special' in the loaded way he says it. And, it is not a claim either. Sacramentals are part of the belief system of the faith. Christians have baptism, confession, laying on of hands and others. It is just another way of relating to the Divine. This is common across most religions with a supreme deity. Look, I don't think I need to say this, but researching the people we are talking about is always useful. And, yes, I get it. It is good that there is all this sharing, but I find these 'surprises' just a little disconcerting, considering all of what Reggae has done to promote the religion across the globe!
