    Nice footage.
    It's great to see it's still a hive of activity.
    It's easy to see why they modify (shorten) ex coal hoppers for stone traffic, when you see the space still available in the wagons even though it's up to max gross weight.

    The filming is that good I thought it was a model railway at the start .Should get a wind muffler for the Mic as the noise spoils your excellent video

    think that class 56 was struggling alot to move them wagons must be some weight tho in them wagons its pushing

      20-22 wagons at fully loaded 2000-2200 tons, dont think the 56 was struggling, was pushing at a low speed on an incline.

    Still not an ideal choice for slow speed shunting, using a locomotive designed for the mainline, with mainline gearing. A well ballasted 1000hp super shunter geared for low speed with a modern low emission engine would be great for here.
    Hard to believe there used to be in excess of 900 class 08/9 shunters. Only a handful in operation now. Shunting is a dying art.

      Yeoman/Hanson have the right idea, there are 2 sw1001 shunters in use at Mearhead and Whatley quarries for heavy shunting. Looks like they need one here.

      @@professorjamesmoriarty5191 maybe those two sw1001 shunters are both required there, one in use and one spare, possibly they swap the locos each week for exams and cost to hire one of them may be too high, a 08 at peak forest would handle pushing these wagons up to the quarry at 15mph, a 09 may struggle, there may also be time limits to load each set of wagons.

      @@perthdave100 The sw1001 pair are both in use 6 days a week, maintenance is done on Sunday. Importing a third one to shunt here would be ideal, but as it's a multi customer site who would pay for it? An 08 is no use here, on the flat yes but the grade here is too steep for one alone. That was the reason the US locos were bought in, we had nothing over here that could cope with the weight and grades in the quarry's.

      @@professorjamesmoriarty5191 i guess you are referring to the US class 59 and class 66, these locos were purchased to replace locos that could not pull the longer heavier trains and to eliminate the use of two locos, plus the reliability of these locos was higher at the time, i still think a 08 would be able to push these fully loaded wagons up the quarry.

      @@perthdave100No I'm talking about the 08's yeoman used to have, they were just not powerful enough. An 08 only weighs 50 tons, so just dont have the traction required to move these loads. An 08 can easily move 1000 tons on the flat, but 2500 tons on a steep grade it will just spin it's wheels.
