- Shaping your own surfboard is easy...said no one ever! It’s true, that with practice you can refine your shaping skills but there is always room for improvement and progression. In the 48 years that Fiberglass Hawaii has been doing business we’ve been asked the question, “How do I make a surfboard template?” about one million times, give or take a few. Hand shapers have been known to spend several hours making a template. The template is the foundation of the board. If your template has kinks, wavy lines or doesn’t flow properly then your shape is doomed from the beginning. When you look at a board your eyes follow the outline, the shape of it and the way the curves bend and flow together seamlessly. There is also a good chance you’ll keep it around for the rest of your shaping career. Sure, you might not use it every day but, when you need to modernize that outline or make another “magic board” then, you’ll be able to grab old faithful out of the pile and get to work.
Also; Cut out the template on a larger piece of plywood laid on your saw horses as a makeshift table. Lay the wide part of the template on the table and secure each end with a spring clamp. This will make it easier to cut with the jig saw. That little Skil jig saw is one of the best for the money. I use Masonite because it is easier to sand and clean up the cut edge. Lowel
This is what I was looking for. Thanks!
You don’t HAVE to have a template before shaping, it’s just easier. I started shaping with clamps and dowels, and measuring every six inches. I now have my own templates.
Use 1/2” or 1/4” tape or you pencil line when cutting. Narrower tape conforms to curves much easier. Lowel
Looks good 👍

kaleb alaimo I suppose it’s just a general over veiw. Remember it depends on the individual, taking into account their personal experience surfing, their height, weight and the type of wave or conditions the board is made for🤙
How can I make this for a 12 inch long surfboard, a miniature one for a art project my dad is making
to make it easier use 1/6 the dimensions giving for a scale where your 12 inch board length is to the given 70 inch board length
too much work mate!
just stick it under the original board and its done!
