okay can we talk about how friggin sad Dick's dream in Technus is? The very notion that his adopted father is openly proud of him, and wants to talk about his interests and emotions, is met with immediate, and harsh distrust
there's a lot to unpack there, so let's just throw out the whole damn suitcase

    • @RabblesTheBinx
      @RabblesTheBinx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

The sad part? Bruce _is_ incredibly proud of him and the choices he's made.

@@RabblesTheBinx I feel like Dick probably knows that, but he also knows Bruce too well to think he'd say it so straightforwardly. Let alone the hugging and smiling.

The best part of this video is seeing the love Lewis put into that book.
That comic isn’t “worse for wear,” it’s “well worn.” That book did its job and more.

Ahhhh That Eccleston clip just makes me giddy to hear it in stuff like this. Just the simple phrase "just this once, EVERYBODY LIVES" is so powerful and triumphant, I'll eat my shoes if it doesn't put a smile on someone's face hearing that...and if you try to be a smartass saying "Its a stupid line and i hate its cheesiness"
You've got one HELL of a bad poker face...

I love the panel at 23:41 where Black Canary is saying 'we would have had to kick their young butts' with Captain Marvel stood behind her looking really awkward. You know he was holding back from pointing out that he's younger from most of the Titans.

You know, it occurs to me that Captain America: Civil War is a lot like a scaled-down version of the Technis Imperative. The main conflict (the REAL main conflict) centers around a former hero coming out of hiding as an apparent threat, and his friends rally around him while those who don't really know him at all decide to apprehend/eliminate him, with both groups ultimately coming to blows over it. So what would you call that? The Bucky Imperative?

What Linkara said about backstory improving a good story can be true for any good event comic. The original story is good, it's just knowing everything else adds more flavor to an already delicious dish... And yes, Linkara probably said that first.

I had no idea that there was a comic where the 5 of them were together in their adult personas like this. I already want to hunt this comic down and read it. Holy Cow dude, I can see why this is your favorite comic. If I had to say I have a favorite comic, I'm a bit torn between World War Hulk and Spider-Island.

I think that Linkara would make a fantastic comic editor; as much as he doesn't want to be identified as an 'expert', I'd say at this point that he knows enough about how sequential art is done that if he were calling the shots, comics would do nothing but succeed under his editorial mandates.

    • @boobah5643

Not a slam on Lewis by any means, but I wouldn't bet on it. The sad truth is that incentives matter... and there are different incentives for 'dude on the internet' and 'writer/editor at a major publishing house.' It's not like they haven't had the inmates more-or-less running the asylum(s) for years. And yeah, sometimes that gets you stuff like Gail Simone's Birds of Prey where the creator gets what makes superhero comics work... but it also gets you stuff like Queseda's One More Day, where they're worried more about 'fixing' a status quo that left the building decades ago than telling a good story.

25:45 Well there was that one time in GaoGaiGar where the titular robot and its allies fought the 16 moons of Jupiter (which were fused with cybernetic entities) so they blew them all up. Then they coalesced to an entity that was BIGGER than Jupiter and the heroes blew that up too. Then during the sequel GaoGairGar destroyed the Sun (a replica of the Sun anyway) with a giant hammer made of several battleships. This stuff isn't really new.
But I digress, heroes giving the middle finger to celestial bodies will never stop being AWESOME. Has any other Superhero done that before? I know Superman once juggled planets at one time.

I think the fight that led to the Grayson series (where Dick becomes a secret agent) was a pretty real fight between the two, but nice to see the two here still having a hidden love and respect for each other to not just duke it out.
Idk. I find the Batman-Nightwing relationship dynamic to be the most interesting in all of either DC/Marvel universes. Just like how Bats, in all his stoicism, would have a soft spot for alfred, (but may never show it) Dick and Bruce is of the same cloth.

For the past week or so I've been watching the Atop the Fourth Wall storyline episodes from start to finish, filling in any gaps I had and seeing where all the characters and plotlines and equipment came from, etc., all because the later episodes made me curious about that history--a lot like how this comic made him want to go back and read older Titans stories. It does work when done correctly!

Hearing about someone's first piece of media from their favorite genre or type of media is just… delightful. There's something about the way people speak that shows how excited and enthusiastic they are about sharing, and, in a way, I kinda adore this review… because if I was a book reviewer on TH-cam, this would be my "A Study in Scarlet", "The Secret Adversary" or "Gentleman Cambrioleur". Three got me into different sects and niches of the greater detective genre, Gentleman Cambrioleur introducing my FAVORITE CHARACTER OF ALL TIMES (Arsène Lupin is a king amongst men, sorry everyone else), while A Study in Scarlet was my first picture-less book ever and The Secret Adversary was what got me into Agatha Christie's books. While I wasn't there for the Teen Titans runs and still haven't been able to really get my hands on all of the comics online… I love it mostly through this Nerd Solidarity. Just hearing someone nerd out about what they like the most gets me to go "true, based and correct".
Edit: ya didn't have to tell me to cry because i have been crying ever since the moment dick realized Bruce wasn't Bruce.......because he hugged him and wanted to ask about how his life had been and tell him he was proud. i have been weeping ever since. I HATE BAD BATDAD BRUCE....... I JUST WANT SOME HAPPINESS.........

Seriously, I know most mean well, but it's common sense really. That's how the whole drama with Mara Wilson started. You see, I like this. Being able to point to something specific that shaped you is special. While I'm not a huge comic reader, I do read some. My 2 specific comics that made me start reading is the Bionicle comics from the Lego magazine and a star wars comic that told a collection of stories. 2 stand out: Darth Vader meeting a Jedi called The Dark Lady and the tale of Skippy, the Jedi droid. The red droid in episode 4, yes really.
Another that had a huge impact is a little known movie called "Flight of Dragons".
Harry Morgan and James Earl Jones voicing wizards

***** It's funnier when he walks us through and awful comic and tears it apart.
But I sometimes feel critics are too harsh, mostly trying to see things in the worst way possible.
I love to hear them talking about what they love, because it shows how much they care about the medium, and why they are usually so angry when people mess things up too much haha!

I am in the middle of reading the 2nd issue now and I love it! I think that it SHOULD be labeled as an events comic! It's that good! It's in my top ten favorite comic books series, or top twenty. I will have to check my list again. It's just fun and epic. I love this story. NOBODY DIES! I have read this story over and over. And another event comic from the '90s I love is DC's One Million. Another fun crossover I dearly love. You should cover that one, because as much as I love it, I get kinda confused and you could get some good jokes. ut hey, even in that one-NO ONE DIES! And thanks for the humor, Linkera and merry Christmas.

Ruinous Powers of Warhammer 40k? Do you really want to tell me what Chaos in the only messed up shit in WH40K? An entire universe, which is a giant clusterfuck of grimdarkness? (What I simply love and adore)
BTW, Chaos only scary if you dive deeper in it's mythos. They just a trivial demons until you read something written from their perspective.

Barnes and Nobles only has this comic rated at Two stars and the only person to leave a review claim the Titans are "whiny" but I don't see that in your through review of the comic. I'm going to buy it and judge it for myself now but if you hadn't given this thing a positive review I probably would have trusted the rating at face value. Hopefully you promote more comics you like this way so new readers like me can get a better idea of the material
