I’m not joking, it was a game almost everyone had played as a teenager back in 90s and more popular than any other genre. You had it in on arcades and people would crowd around and watch others play, min tournaments would start, and then suddenly it was on the SNES. It was mind blowing for a console to be able to play an arcade game. It was a must have if you had a SNES and along with Mario kart would be played to death at house parties. It often appeared in tv tournaments before e-sports became wide spread. It`s impact is huge and deserves its ranking. It’s shame fighting games have never quite reached this peak or dominance - SF2 is a titan in the rankings.

SF 2 was revolutionary for the fighting game genre which is deservingly important to include it in the top 50 if we’re talking about historical impact. Much like a 2K sports game was.

I just started World of Warcraft Classic for the anniversary. The new retail versions are apparently more solo adventure friendly, but Im really liking teaming up with strangers to tackle mission. Definitely need an experienced friend though to get started, and preferably to tackle some dungeons or missions.
At first glance, the three biggest problems with the list are that Diddy Kong Racing is better than Mario Kart 64, and Morrowind is way better than Skyrim - much more original writing, art direction, and atmosphere; better music, very limited level scaling and no quest markers. Also it sold 4 million copies, not exactly niche. And of course New Vegas is much better than Fallout 3 for similar reasons.
Best RPGs is so hard to pick, 'cause some are so varied and not everyone has played them all. Some of my top RPGs would be FF7, FF9, Dragon Quest 11, Dark Cloud, Persona 4, Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, Yo-Kai Watch 2, Kingdom Hearts 2, Chrono Cross... and so many more, but where to stop? XD

as a 2K basketball fan who hasnt played one in years to due microtransaction and gameplay. NBA 2K11 was absolute peak !!! the soundtrack was amazing as well

Fairly certain my top 10 list, in no particular order, would contain - Hollow Knight (Switch) - Stardew Valley (Switch, PC/MacOS, Android, Xbox SX, PS5) - A Link to the Past (SNES) - Deus Ex (2000) (PC) - Half Life 1 (PC, more recently I play the Black Mesa version) - Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Super Mario Bros 1 (NES) - Super Mario 64 (N64) - Skyrim (360, PS4, PS5) (yes I get that Oblivion was better written but it repeats too many locations. I sunk 500 hours into my first save, and it helped me survive the death of my father) - Fallout 4 (PS4) (odd inclusion for sure, but I could make incredibly things in its settlement building, and it has the best survival mode of any game) Every one of these games I still play today.
Other noteworthy omissions that were very influential: Portal 2, Starcraft, Myst, Dark Souls, Sim City, Silent Hill 2, Telltale Walking Dead, Pong, Space Invaders. I don't think there were any strategy games, point & click games, or arcade shooters at all, despite the historic popularity of those genres. Also no mobile games and very few portable games from the pre-Switch era (I think just Tetris?).
I really liked watching Jake Steinberg's take on this list and maybe one perspective he had that made me accept this list better, is that this is not necessarily the best games because of quality but rather because of their cultural impact. Hence, games like League of Legends and NBA being on this list. We might just be a bit too capital-G Gamers-coded to accept it.

I mostly agree with this list. The placement of games is wacky, but the game selection is good. I'd only remove the two sports games, Fortnite, and LoL and replace them with NFS Most Wanted, Red Alert 2, BioShock, and Persona 5 Royal

It is so awesome that Ms. Pac-Man made the list. That is the first game I have ever played. Way back in the Atari days. Sucks that the only Pac-Man game on Antstream Arcade is the original though. Still get to enjoy it anyway.
Metroid Prime was barely considered a FPS in its time, because it played more like a 3D Metroid game wit shooting akin to lock-in in Zelda. Also I'd argue the series hasn't been left to rot, because by the time Metroid Prime 3 released people seemed tired of the series. The break has been welcome.
I think SOCOM should’ve been on this list, because i poured soooo much time in those online lobbies(Nightfrost was the best level). Tiger Woods 2004 was also just one hell of a fun of a game. Gran Tourismo was a ton of fun and possibly the first driving game to really introduce upgrades to cars, and really making you own unique build. Mario 64 should have beaten super Mario World, but that’s my personal opinion. I also think Goldeneye/Perfect Dark should’ve made it on here

Literally one of the highest rated and most popular JRPGs of all time, it introduced so many people to turn based JRPGs, even people who aren't into turn based games at all, and made Persona a big name, it's like a modern Final Fantasy VII for the JRPG genre. Not adding it on the list is like not adding Elden Ring even though it's groundbreaking, it introduced millions of people into the soulsborne community and popularized the genre.
@kostasspirou1010 its not even the best persona game. Making something popular =/= good. Persona 5 has some of the biggest inconsistencies in its storytelling ive seen in a very long time. The only thing that is actually new in persona 5 (its story and characters) are just not that good compared to the other persona games. And the gameplay is just a dumbed down version of Shin Megami Tensei. Im not going to act its a bad game. Cuz its not. It has great aspects. But calling it one of the greatest jrpgs, or games in general kinda feels like you havent played a lot of games or jrpgs.
@@GameTimeNLL I have a list with hundreds of games and many JRPGs, in fact RPGs in general are my favorite genre, I love games like Baldur's Gate 3, Witcher 3, the Persona series, the Xenoblade series, Fire Emblem, even Final Fantasy, and I still think P5 is one of the best JRPGs I've played, it's the most "videogamey" Persona game of them all, the most enjoyable to play, and I understand why you wouldn't like the story, but acting like it's a bad story is ridiculous imo, you can't tell me it's not a good JRPG, there's a reason why it's so highly rated lol besides, even if it's not your favorite, it's the most impactful one by far. Also, Persona 3 and 4 have many flaws in their stories as well, P3's story doesn't even start until way later in the game, but that doesn't make them bad either lol, I actually prefer 5's story overall the most, but they're all good stories.
i don't play league of legends but for the past 10 years i've had coworkers who are super casual or not "into" gaming who play league, and it was big for streamers and tournaments. it's not a wild stretch to have it on the list, if anything wood's overreaction to seeing it on the list makes me trust his opinions less
I hate now how you get a disc but after copying all these files over to your console it needs to download a patch. Worse still, if they companies shut down a server, you're left with what is essentially a really expensive drinks coaster... I much prefer handing over my cash for a COMPLETE game that you still use 40 years later.

Gran Tourismo was a ton of fun and possibly the first driving game to really introduce upgrades to cars, and really making you own unique build.
Mario 64 should have beaten super Mario World, but that’s my personal opinion. I also think Goldeneye/Perfect Dark should’ve made it on here
But on the google list was bloodborne, bioshock just from i could see that didnt make the aeticle.
For me also missing was dark souls, horizon ZD, alien isolation, just as a start

@@GameTimeNLL Why not? Literally one of the highest rated and most popular JRPGs of all time, it introduced so many people to turn based JRPGs, even people who aren't into turn based games at all, and made Persona a big name, it's like a modern Final Fantasy VII for the JRPG genre.
Not adding it on the list is like not adding Elden Ring even though it's groundbreaking, it introduced millions of people into the soulsborne community and popularized the genre.
@kostasspirou1010 its not even the best persona game. Making something popular =/= good. Persona 5 has some of the biggest inconsistencies in its storytelling ive seen in a very long time. The only thing that is actually new in persona 5 (its story and characters) are just not that good compared to the other persona games. And the gameplay is just a dumbed down version of Shin Megami Tensei. Im not going to act its a bad game. Cuz its not. It has great aspects. But calling it one of the greatest jrpgs, or games in general kinda feels like you havent played a lot of games or jrpgs.
@@GameTimeNLL I have a list with hundreds of games and many JRPGs, in fact RPGs in general are my favorite genre, I love games like Baldur's Gate 3, Witcher 3, the Persona series, the Xenoblade series, Fire Emblem, even Final Fantasy, and I still think P5 is one of the best JRPGs I've played, it's the most "videogamey" Persona game of them all, the most enjoyable to play, and I understand why you wouldn't like the story, but acting like it's a bad story is ridiculous imo, you can't tell me it's not a good JRPG, there's a reason why it's so highly rated lol besides, even if it's not your favorite, it's the most impactful one by far.
Also, Persona 3 and 4 have many flaws in their stories as well, P3's story doesn't even start until way later in the game, but that doesn't make them bad either lol, I actually prefer 5's story overall the most, but they're all good stories.

Wood you should try playing Half Life on a Steam Deck. I never played the original, but i was blown away when I tried it on the Deck
i don't play league of legends but for the past 10 years i've had coworkers who are super casual or not "into" gaming who play league, and it was big for streamers and tournaments. it's not a wild stretch to have it on the list, if anything wood's overreaction to seeing it on the list makes me trust his opinions less
I hate now how you get a disc but after copying all these files over to your console it needs to download a patch.
Worse still, if they companies shut down a server, you're left with what is essentially a really expensive drinks coaster...
I much prefer handing over my cash for a COMPLETE game that you still use 40 years later.
