I'm sixteen and absolutely love this song. My parents would always listen to Marrilion and I didn't like it that much. But I grew older and I am the one who turns Marillion on. There music is absolutely brilliant
Absolutely their best... Friend Gene turned me on to them in 86', while I was die hard Maiden, Queensryche, Priest fan, Lavender ended up being my wedding song in 98', still listen to this album 2-3x a week...
Yeah, well it’s now 24th November 2024. I remember being at Polytechnic and buying this on cassette and CD. I had heard part of this song and bought both but then kept them in their wrappers for two weeks because I thought “What if I heard wrong. What if the rest of the album is a let down” Then my friend Paddy came round and told me not to be so stupid and we sat down together and listened to the whole thing twice. It is one of only four or five albums that I have where I love every single track on it. And it remains so to this day. I saw them on the “Seasons End” tour when they did Rock City here in Nottingham. He can sing, that lad Hogarth!! Their stage show blew me away as well. I even wrote a short story called “The King of sunset town” about the character in the song. So, it’s 24th November 2024 and I still love the song, the album and the group. They are one of the best.
The album is a masterpiece and this song is such a fitting opener. It combines accessibility with complexity using unapologetic musicality. It doesn't get said enough, but Pete Trewavas is a fantastic bassist! His tone and bass parts are perfect in every song (and these guys have a LOT of songs)! 😄
That is so true. Pete's gets a fantastic tone with his base and a lot of musicality, a great bass player and yes his base perfectly suits and lifts every song
It’s one of only about four or five CD’s that I own where I love every single track. It’s sounds just as good today as when I first heard it and that was 1989 / 1990? I’m sure someone will correct me on that one. I know that I actually went into a record shop and bought a copy after it had just been released. So glad I did. What a great, great album.
Marillion was a good band with Fish. I saw them in Stockholm in the 80s but they kept on doing good albums and great songs with the new singer. This song is wonderful!!
Fish had a great voice and his poetic lyrics were brilliant. Steve Hogarth has a great voice his poetic lyrics are brilliant so is his Piano/Keyboards, Guitar, hammered dulcimer et al.
David Cook That's because the music was already written. Even if Fish had stuck around, most of the music would have been the same. I think the death knell for Marillion as a major band was Holidays in Eden, which was a bit too Bryan Adams and failed as the commercial album it was trying to be because radio programmers didn't want to know, while many old Marillion fans just thought they'd sold out to pop and left them for good.
Matt Maloney Good point you make re the band's commercial decline. Season's End, Holidays In Eden and Brave all made the Top 10. It was the death knell (as far as album sales were concerned) when they left EMI after their excellent Afraid of Sunlight album in 1995.
David Cook I think EMI's decision to drop them was made way before AOS. It was probably made as soon as Fish left and Seasons End showed a sharp drop in sales figures. Holidays was certainly seen as a last ditch attempt to recapture a big commercial audience (which it didn't succeed at), so I think the writing was already on the wall circa 1991. It think the contract with EMI meant both parties were going to see it through but EMI were looking purely and simply at the sales figures which were going in the wrong direction. It didn't matter to them how good AOS was (and some of it was outstanding - even Q Magazine acknowledged that!!).
I like to imagine Sunset Town is a tropical land by the ocean with the best sunsets ever and full of a lot of nature and there is barely ever any troubles and its easy living for everyone! Everyday is a vacation and stress, depression, and anxiety are unknown! :D If only a place like that existed!
One of my favorite songs ever. I had some Chinese friends in America during the Tiananmen Square uprising. It was heart-wrenching to see what happened there, and this song captures the emotions perfectly.
my world 1989 - Fish had left Marillion after CAS :( BUT there's a new Marillion album coming out with a new singer! Cannot wait for the CD to be released in the US. I have to get it ASAP. The record store has it on Vinyl. Great, I can deal with that. The needle is down, the music begins as we wait to hear the new singer. All is good!! Oh and Fish put out his 1st solo that year. Bonus!!
+Johnny Handegg Though I love Marillion, the triumvirat is King Crimson, Genesis, Yes. IQ in the level of Marillion for sure. Don´t forget VDGG, the Aristocrats of Prog Rock while Floyd are not even prog, too popular indeed.
+limon limonero Of course Pink Floyd were prog. That reminds me of an article in the Guardian whereby a journalist tried to make a case that Pink Floyd weren't prog because they were good and prog was crap. Floyd tick almost all the boxes (concept albums, extended compositions, philosophical lyrics etc). In many ways they were a lot more prog than Marillion, who were almost an AOR band with the number of top 40 singles they had. Pink Floyd hardly released any singles and were far less commercial than Marillion. Just because they sold a shitload of albums doesn't make them not prog.

This opening song is Rothery shouting at the fans: "Hey guys, we're still Marillion"... I just wish I could appreciate Hogarth's voice more, but to me it's mostly wailing, no matter how often I listen. I even went to a concert with him solo once, but it wasn't much of a pleasure. Never, ever, as good as Fish, even with good lyrics and great compositions.
I personally thought This Strange Engine was a decent effort (caught them on that tour at the Glasgow Garage back in 1997). The last album I bought was Marillion.com so I can't comment on their later work.

'Your beloved Fish'? pfft!! my friend, Marillion without Fish's creative genius would never become the monster that it became, with its unique sound and haunting lyrics. The original Marillion's DNA has Fish written all over it. Yes, they are still great with Hogarth (and I love all the albums until Afraid of Sunlight, their 2nd era Magnum Opus being 'Brave') but don't say they're better; The Fish era is untouchable.
... but why all these comparisons between Fish and Steve Hogarth ??? they are two different persons ...with different styles . so what ? Fish was great and he left .... Steve stepped in and took Marillion in maybe a different direction . A band has to evolve and keep fresh . Marillion did just that . Its not their problem if some people can t appreciate their work . Full Metal Jacket, why the constant comparison? Because they went on doing something different under the old name. I like em both but like Van Halen the comparison will always be part of this band.
to me it is the quintessence of progressive rock. Fish did a great era in Marillion's life but drinking has ruins his voice. H came with optimism an hope for the future
Another Brick In The Wall' PF.
Don't you think there is something completely screwed up about life, if this track gets a meagre three hundred thousand views and some garbage spewed out these days by utterly talentless individuals calling themselves musicians gets over a hundred million ? Fish was right - This world is totally Fugazi !
Hoggy enchanted me with his timbre of voice from the first seconds and it has remained so until today
I'm sixteen and absolutely love this song. My parents would always listen to Marrilion and I didn't like it that much. But I grew older and I am the one who turns Marillion on. There music is absolutely brilliant
Now you're 22 still love this music ??
Just like me sister....now I play them all on my electric Guitar....possessed by my Brothers into loving every album.
Now you are 26
this was an exceptional album for sure. despite the loss of fish, i think this is one of their best albums.
I
Absolutely their best... Friend Gene turned me on to them in 86', while I was die hard Maiden, Queensryche, Priest fan, Lavender ended up being my wedding song in 98', still listen to this album 2-3x a week...
Dont get me wrong i'm Scottish and the big man Fish is my favourite....but I love Steve....he's sensational....everything Marillion is perfection.
June 2020 i' m 43 and this is my favorite band ever still 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Same for me and I'm also 43 😎
If Marillion is your favorite band then obviously you know what you like and apparently you like excellent music. 😉

He is. He's like John Deacon.
That is so true. Pete's gets a fantastic tone with his base and a lot of musicality, a great bass player and yes his base perfectly suits and lifts every song
Bass not base auto correct nightmare 😱

So glad I did. What a great, great album.
Fantastic song with one of the most amazing intros I've ever heard!!
Incredible album.
What a great vocal! Respect! Marillion is not only Fish.....
Grand debut album but yes marillion is not one person
Marillion is fish 🐠
But still love this album
And love Steve h
Is only Fish
Just love this track when Steve's guitar kicks in at the start makes my heart soar like a bird and just for a moment its like touching heaven
The feel of this song amplifies a vibration deep inside those that hear it.
To this day, this is my favourite album by anyone ever. Great memories of passed friends and good times. Just love it.
I have 1500+ CD's... this album is THE #1, and has been for 30 years now! 'nuff said!
Marillion was a good band with Fish. I saw them in Stockholm in the 80s but they kept on doing good albums and great songs with the new singer. This song is wonderful!!
An amazing sound !!! Amazing mixure of instruments!!! And lyrics and vocal !!!! Favorite song from the album!
suuuper song !!!!
Goosebumps moment at 1000% al 4:45!!!!!! Anyone agree?
Fish had a great voice and his poetic lyrics were brilliant. Steve Hogarth has a great voice his poetic lyrics are brilliant so is his Piano/Keyboards, Guitar, hammered dulcimer et al.
dave nightingale It was quite a smooth transition from the Fish era to the Hogarth era.

Wonderful song from the beggining to the end. I really love this album!.
when i listening and i was 10 years old i am 42 years old today ,Marillion , it's my life
I remember listening to this the first time, that drum fill at 2:01 was all I needed to fall in love with this record.
Totally agree. Super musical drum fill!!!
this was a great cd as was fish wilderness cd that came out at the same time both are great
as album (and concert) openers go, this takes some beating. marillion showing off their skills (and their new singer) to the world. epic.
Fish left Marillion ages ago, get over it, They are still alive and kicking and with an awesome singer
It's true, of course. But the first 4 are still my favorite albums by a long shot. The Fish era is unique and untouchable.
The best intro in rock history
😂😂😂😂
They used to open with this song. It should be their standard opening song. Now THIS is an opening song not to miss.
Fish or no fish still my favourite marillion album and always will be, fucking epic,!
What a great song sound lyrics all....
awesome song-awesome band
Awesome
Rothery's print over here what a guitar's feeling
Marillion.. The King of bands!..
I like to imagine Sunset Town is a tropical land by the ocean with the best sunsets ever and full of a lot of nature and there is barely ever any troubles and its easy living for everyone! Everyday is a vacation and stress, depression, and anxiety are unknown! :D If only a place like that existed!
A classic from Marillion 😂😂😂
Brilliant debut from Mr. Hogarth. Still have the gatefold vinyl in working order.
David Cook Oh, Yes Indeed, Dear Mr. Cook...
Music was already written for this album while Fish was part of the band. This was not, in effect, the first H album
It's just been re-released on 180g vinyl - stunning!
King Curry Didn't know that. I see a lot of older classic albums have been brought out again on that format.
Me too, Davey. I also got Script, Fugazi, Misplaced, Clutching and FEAR.
Wow This album marked a certain time of my life a lot. Nice to listen to it after so many years.
Super Song😌😘
playing this on another anniversary
To the 44 people that couldn't appreciate this. Too bad so sad for you.
I love......Marillion
One of my favorite songs ever. I had some Chinese friends in America during the Tiananmen Square uprising. It was heart-wrenching to see what happened there, and this song captures the emotions perfectly.
this song is PERFECTION!
Saw them on this tour and it was awesome. I knew nothing of Marillion at the time but they were damned good .
Were? You listened to the last 2 albums? If not, have a listen... wonderful stuff 😊
Marillion still sounds like Marillion in this album.
my world 1989 - Fish had left Marillion after CAS :(
BUT there's a new Marillion album coming out with a new singer! Cannot wait for the CD to be released in the US. I have to get it ASAP. The record store has it on Vinyl. Great, I can deal with that. Excellent!
First time listening to this band...
No Fish, no Marillion, but my fave is still Afraid of Sunlight. Funny that. The most underrated band in the world.
Love Marillion!
One of my favorites
my bday :)
steve rothery is the king of guitare arpege .
Top top top !!!!!

The best, ever ...
Better than the rubbish of today 😂😂😂
John Petrucci was inspired by Marillion. That is all that needs to be said. =)
I dont know. A change of seasons was writen some years before was relased.
They even played with Steve Hogarth
TH-cam Easter by Dream Theater
This was written for Brighton&Hove, UK, the Sunset Town !!
This song signifies the birth of Marillion.
Fuck no! Hogarth can't hold a candle to Fish!
Twas the beginning of the end rather.
*****
Yes! Beginning of the end of the classic, serious Marillion.
More likely a new dawn, which sadly ended with Afraid of Sunlight
Actually, no.... This album had all the music basically completed when Fish was part of the band. H revised and wrote some new lyrics......
Ma jeunesse ...😉
I like how his voice doesn't twist.
Pink Floyd,Rush,Marillion,Fates Warning,Dream Theater = The Divine Five Of Prog Rock
Johnny Handegg
And Steve Wilson
+Johnny Handegg + dave nightingale ...Porcupine Tree and Riverside... The first two on my list.
+Johnny Handegg Though I love Marillion, the triumvirat is King Crimson, Genesis, Yes. IQ in the level of Marillion for sure. Don´t forget VDGG, the Aristocrats of Prog Rock while Floyd are not even prog, too popular indeed.

My 5: Genesis (pete and phil!), Gentle Giant, Haken, Yes and Floyd
the best...
the first 2 minutes are epic, but the magic fade out soon, when that dude starts to sing!
To me, the magic of Marillion never fades...
Cheers Sophie.
☆perfect☆
A ragged man came shuffling through
A puppet king on the fourth of June
And butterflies from all around
Settled on his paper crown
A pretty sight it seemed to be
An avenue of eternal peace
But he said, "What is here can soon burn down..."
"I'm the king of Sunset Town."
Watch a big wheel turning 'round
Some go up, and some go down
Some go thirsty, some just drown
"That's the law 'round here, "
Said the king of Sunset Town
And in the night he comes to me
And the square becomes a battlefield
Of staring eyes that can't explain
The insanity and the greater game
Watch a big wheel turning 'round
Some go up, and some go down
Some go thirsty, some just drown
"That's the law 'round here, "
Said the king of sunset town
A ragged man came shuffling through
The corridors of this white place
And as he lay his body down
I saw the scars that lined his face
And injured souls came to his bed
To hear the stories he would tell
Of butterflies and summertimes
And everyone assembled here
Remembers how it used to be
Before the twenty-seventh came
This place will never be the same
He said, "I'm the king of sunset town."
Watch a big wheel turning 'round
Some go up, and some go down
Some go thirsty, some just drown
"That's the law round here, "
Said the king of sunset town
wonderful song.... one of my favourites for years. And sorry but for me Steve Hogarth is the better one :)
"FISH" era indispensabile, ma questo album ( con questa canzone, con " season's end")...è stato un degno successore. A mio modesto parere
This opening song is Rothery shouting at the fans: "Hey guys, we're still Marillion"... I just wish I could appreciate Hogarth's voice more, but to me it's mostly wailing, no matter how often I listen. I even went to a concert with him solo once, but it wasn't much of a pleasure. with the exception of Marbles every other Marillion album after Afraid of Sunlight have been very disappointing
I personally thought This Strange Engine was a decent effort (caught them on that tour at the Glasgow Garage back in 1997). The last album I bought was Marillion.com so I can't comment on their later work.
un tres bonne album vinyl

What is WRONG with you fools, who can't appreciate Marillion without your beloved Fish??? They were great then, and even better now. And Mr andleavem, your opinion was negated when I read your profile name.
Here here in with you on this one, loved fish still do, but H took marillion to a new better direction

Steve Hogarth (in my opinion) is a Way better singer than Fish!!!
Watch "Brave" Live. The guys voice just emanates through the stadium! My Favorite Video...

I listed to this song with my girlfriend in college
Dan Swanö was inspired by Marillion, That is all that needs to be said. =)

Strong the Mike Oldfield is in this guitar player hrrrm...

Couldn't disagree more. Fish never wrote or played the music. The music was still alive and well on this album.
Don't you think there is something completely screwed up about life, if this track gets a meagre three hundred thousand views and some garbage spewed out these days by utterly talentless individuals calling themselves musicians gets over a hundred million ?
