I was born in the late 60's but grew up with and collected/played with Joes, Star Wars, MOTU and Transformers. What I used to love about going into toy stores was the diversity of lines. You could get so much back then for so little (although Transformers were always kinda expensive). What I miss today are cheap lines that kids could save up for and there were always items on the shelf. Now, unless you buy something the minute you see it you are likely never going to see it again and have to go to a scalper.
I used to be into the 1/6 scale figures and loved when Hasbro and other companies made affordable figures and accessories. Now, unless I'm willing to take out another mortgage on my house, I can't afford 12 inch figures. Scarcity, expense, scalpers, hoarders and store exclusives have made toy collecting a nightmare.
Yes, you can go online with BBTS but there's a certain thrill of going to a store and finding what you want and being able to see it first hand and make that decision if you want it. I've purchased items on BBTS before and forgot about them until they arrived in the mail and then went 'meh' when I saw them in person.
While I get that adult collectors are a niche and likely kids today won't care about action figures from the movie Krull (and the fact kids today don't really care about action figures) I do wish the offerings from companies were a bit cheaper and easier to obtain. Sorry, I sound like an old grouch but toy collecting has really stopped being fun and has become more of a task where only a select few with deep pockets or connections get to have the fun.

I liked how toys were at allowance pricepoint where you could choose between candy or a toy now kids would have to save up a ton to just buy something and woth their attention span it ain’t gonna happen 🤣

I remember back in 2004 in college and I was so excited for I think the NECA 18 inch Michael Myers or maybe it was Freddy anyway one of the kids in our social circle heard me talking about it and was stunned that I had more figures. He then went on to try and make me look like a child who 'plays with toys' no matter how many times I tried to explain that its rather like a painting or better yet a sculpture, a piece of art work that you can just look at.

Collecting is a fun hobby, and I think the people drawn to it are natural archivists. We like to catalogue and preserve and store examples of every type. Toy companies take advantage of our natural disposition.

I've definitely found that I'm more into buying the new sculpts that tend to look more like the source material and often add more articulation. It's like they're finally making the toys I WISHED they made when I was a kid.
As a prime example, I was way way more excited to see diamond selects version of The Real Ghostbusters than the Hasbro/Kenner rereleases. They looked exactly like the show, and less like a representation. When I look at these figures, I feel more nostalgia for the show than just the figures themselves.

Very informative video Ed! Nostalgia sells and I know for me my biggest anticipation is the MOTU Origins line that is supposed to officially launch in Walmart on August 1. I've managed to grab a few figures already but through scalpers so I did pay more. As I examine my own motives, I guess the idea of a 5.5 inch MOTU line with modern articulation that I can actually be a part of from the beginning has me excited. I'll get updated figures from my childhood and I'll be able to "hopefully" see them in a retail store and relive a part of my childhood.

Since Toys R Us bit the dust, I do most of my purchases on-line. Especially thru Entertainment Earth and Sideshow Collectibles. I keep all my action figures in their original clamshell cases for display, but I take my large statues out of the box and display them under plexiglass. My house has been described as a museum to toys ! And my closest friends call me an archivist because of how I protect all my collections (such as: art, rare books, magazines, and comic books).

@@EdsRetroGeekOut I guess since the early 90's when I discovered ebay and began a search for the toys and magazines from my youth. It started with the early Warren monster magazines from the 60's, and moved on to the Aurora monster models from the same era. I then started hunting thru local toy shows and moved on to action figure magazines, where they would have articles on the new lines from McFarlane's Spawn series. Love that stuff. Really miss the days standing outside the front doors of Toys R Us for them to open. Whole aisles devoted to just Spawn ! I even attended Wizard World comic-cons in Chicago in the early 2000's and got some exclusives. I'm to the point where only holy grail items are on my radar. The elusive Have Gun Will Travel lunch box and thermos. But I'll get one some day.

The first company/property to consciously target adult collectors was Playmates with their Star Trek line, which predates Power of the Force 2 by at least two years, and you can really tell from how much it's advertised on the cardbacks ("each figure individually numbered!" etc). Before then movie and TV licenses with more adult-oriented source material were still aimed squarely at children, with all the action features of the Terminator 2 figures or the cap firing Robocop figures; Even the Star Trek toyline still demonstrated Playmates wasn't entirely confident with aiming just the collectors with some of their design choices, like making Riker only as a "battle damage" version.

This brings up memories of getting toys and also asking why they didn't resemble their movie counterparts, in my case it was with Jurassic Park and seeing how they look more like a GI Joe team than the actors from the movie. Didn't noticed at the time but toys slowly started to be more screen accurate by the late 90's and early 2000's. Even now I'm surprised by the level of quality some movie characters get, probably my favorite example is Elsa and Anna from Frozen, sure you can get the dozen or so Dolls that almost look like them or you can spend quite a bit of money to get the Medicom RAH screen accurate doll with changing hands and faces to actually recreate the movie! Something one would had never thought possible back in the 90's when a Princess character at best just got a bland face Mattel doll.

@@EdsRetroGeekOut I remember how he was nicknamed "Secret Agent Nedry" in the old JP forums because of how he look 😄 I get him not being fat (despite WWE releasing full body type figures around this time) but the sweater and dark sunglasses?? 🤣 Is like it was a figure from a complete different toyline.

Those Power of the Force figures were amazing! I know, they sometimes are faced with criticism because the characters in the first couple lines were very buff. What some people don’t realize or don’t remember is that’s how figures were like back then-action figure lines didn’t always aim for accuracy like they do today. Figures were meant to be action-ready which is why Batman figures, Power Rangers figures, etc. around that same time frame had their characters buff instead of giving them screen Accurate physiques.
Regardless of that the figures were highly impressive. Kenner nailed every detail on their attires and the new face scan technology made the Star Wars figures look more screen accurate than ever.

Great Video to watch, I appreciate your effort 👍🏻😀 I love the Mixture of old toy Brands combined with new toy Brands. For example Mega construx he-man and the masters of the Universe. The best of two worlds 🤓

As a kid in the 80’s I loved Star Wars, transformers, and gi joe, and had many many toys and figures. As a young adult I’d buy a figure occasionally but would always end up giving them to a little kid like nephews or friends kids. Then about 6 years ago while at a Walgreens waiting for my prescription I saw the black series Yoda and obi won. While both these figures have been hugely improved they blew my mind when comparing to the figures I had as a kid. So that month I got yoda, and the next month obi won. Now 600 figures later I have a collection of my favorites from dc, marvel, Star Wars, anime, etc mostly in 1/12 scale with a third being high end imports from Japan. I used to collect aquariums but became jaded with the hobby so I was thinking of what made me happy before I started hitting the streets? Action figures and art. I’ve since combined the two buy customizing and building dioramas, as well as photography. It’s a fantastic hobby that I can enjoy with my miracle baby (5 year old boy with autism) as well as my nieces and nephews...at least the ones that don’t think they’re hard. Great video my man...very informative...will subscribe now! God bless!

I got pretty heavily into Spawn in my teens. Most, if not all of them aren't worth anything. The ones that I opened weren't really good for play, but at least they look cool.

The use of words like "collectible", "limited", "first", are the perfect hook for kidults. Collecting (limited efition) toys has become a lifestyle, but it feels sometimes immerse within an adults kind of thing/sense, french writter Guy de Maupassant makes a point about this on one of his hort stories about a collector. Hopefully many o us, kidults, will one day come back home, and fully understand the world as when we were kids, when our toys were the flux capacitor to live our own adventures at its peak.

NECA, in particular, are pretty good at delivering figures that represent how I saw my action figures as a kid, with the benefit of my kidly imagination. Their movie TMNT are the ultimate upgrades of the Movie Star Turtles of my youth. And as a horror movie fan, they've likewise been turning out everything from Aliens to Predators, Slashers to the classic Universal Monsters. And their sculpting (particularly when Trevor Grove does the head sculpts) is really impressive. Currently looking forward to their Christopher Lee Dracula and their Vincent Price.
