After more than thirty years of service as a top naval aviator, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot. Yet, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past when he returns to TOP GUN to train a group of elite graduates and comes face-to-face with Lt. Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his former wingman, "Goose". Bitter rivalries ignite as the pilots prepare for a specialized mission, which will require the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.

I like how Tom is a pilot irl. Pretty fortunate of him to possess such a beautiful aircraft…
2.5 million for just that little single prop plane alone. Not cheap
@@coryboy345 Pretty sure he didn't even notice that $2.5 million gone.
With his 10% take from TG:M, he can afford a couple more.
It could be argued, all because of the first Top Gun.
What a thing of beauty
"If Top Gun was made in the 1940´s... this plane was the star of the show" I will like that movie to be made.
Top Gun school didn't exist until after 1969
What would they title the movie?
@@guts-141 Prop Gun

If Maverick was in the US Army Air Force. For the Navy it would have been the F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, F8F Bearcat or F4U Corsair. Heck if they wanted to keep Goose, Maverick would be flying Dive Bombers instead of Fighters. So the choices would be SBD Dauntless or SB2C Helldiver.
@@ph89787 My favorite was the P-47 Thunderbolt. Not Navy but it was a beast.
P51 Mustang is really an iconic airplane. It is very awesome that Tom Cruise' personal P51 was part of Top Gun Maverick.

Yep. Used his own aircraft in the movie and now it's an expense write-off and the value of it is through the roof.. It will now generate money for him just by existing.
It's cool to see Steve follow in his father's footsteps in Hollywood. His father Steve Hinton Sr is a legend in aviation with him holding numerous air race records, has flown literally hundreds of vintage aircraft over the years and has been involved with nearly 100 movies and shows (Dunkirk, Iron Eagle, Ironman, Pearl Harbor, Black Sheep Squadron, Air Force One to name a few) over the last 50 years. His son Steve Hinton Jr has broken some of his father's records and currently holds the world speed record for piston powered aircraft over a 3km course (In a modified air race P-51 if I recall). Literally one of the best people to include in a project like this.
It’s cool that you know this
I was wondering if that was THE Steve Hinton…didn’t seem mature enough. Lol. Thanks for the intel.
You know a plane is iconic when guys who fly some of the most advanced aircraft the USA has to offer geek out over it. P-51 is and always will be the king of the skies
@Support Ukraine 🇺🇦 Nah, it's the bf 109.
@Support Ukraine 🇺🇦 the spitfire would be the queen
@Support Ukraine 🇺🇦 The P51 wouldnt be heard of today if it wasnt for its British engine. The P51 was an export fighter, designed entirely to a British order for s British requirement. When we got it delivered though it was absolutely horrendous. Nothing like the fighter it would become. It had poor speed ,poor climb rate it turned about as well as a boomerang selotaped to a brick.
But then geniuses of the British aircraft industry had an idea, "let's put a Rolls Royce Merlin in it".....
And the rest is history. Basically the P51 was a pile of broken junk. It took the Bris to fix it
@@mikeycraig8970 while yes the merlin took the mustang to a whole new level, the Allison V1710 it did have when it first flew was still powerful enough to put the mustang above the latest spitfire marks available at that time in terms of speed, although it didn't have a chance above 15,000 ft with the single stage supercharger. It was by no means sluggish despite being a bit slow due to the somewhat lack of power.
Cuz those pilots don't have the money but Cruise does
Of all the WWII planes, this one was always my favorite. That Rolls Royce 12 cylinder was a beast. My father built a 1/4 scale R/C model back in the 70s when we used to go fly gas powered R/C planes when I was a kid. When he brought it out to the field, people just stared at it. It didn't have all the detail that a lot of guys incorporate today but it was still cool. It suffered a crash that was repairable but it hasn't been flown since then. That was almost 50 years ago. He still has it. I told him he should convert it to electric and get it back in the air. Not sure how well the balsa has held up though.
Prefer the spitfire myself with the merlin engine, but both are great planes.
@@arjentromp12 I like that one too. I've always like the name.
Awesome
i thought the P-51 had a packard-merlin engine. maybe they had 2 engine options
@@ryanlu6103 there was P51 with the RR Merlin, it was kinda a prototype of "what if this plane equipped with merlin engine" aircraft.
The Packard-Merlin engine is basically a Merlin engine that is built by Packard.
Ever since I found out he owns a P-51 I’ve had a new found respect for him. I’m in the aviation business and that plane just speaks to people. Saying it’s iconic is almost an understatement.
The flames coming out of the exhaust pipes is just the P51 saying "Amerc'a" in a southern accent.
North Carolina reporting, can confirm. Four most dangerous words in the English language: "Hey y'all, watch this!!!"
Lovely British rolls Royce merlin engine 👌 😀 that's what made p51 mustangs name! Fantastic engine and fantastic plane! But spitfire is the daddy 👌😉
@B.L. Alley The P51 was designed for the RAF, it was initially equipped with an Allison engine, It wasnt until that was replaced with a RR Merlin that the performance improved to combat effective
@@src2251 1946 built so that would be the Packard V-1650 Merlin licensed copy of the British design but built in America by an American company so still " Amerc'a"...

My father LOVES the P-51, so one year for his birthday I built him a wonderful model of one. But I had no idea what I wanted to paint it like, then I saw this one and didn't know it was Cruse's own plane...
So now my dad has a replica of not only a P-51, but Tom Cruise's P-51. :)
I worked at an FBO - FAT (Fresno Air Terminal) for almost a year while attending college. Once a month a P-51D Mustang came in to refuel. "How much fuel today, sir. 60 a side of 100/130". I loved every minute of it. :)
P51 Mustang and F4U Corsair are the most beautiful planes ever.
Spitfire wants a word.
Ok let's fix this real quick "WWII Era War Birds are the most beautiful planes ever built"
@@Saltybuher The P38 strongly supports the statement.
@@Saltybuher Supermarine Mk IX says hold my pint
The P51 is my all time favorite plane. I have always wanted to not only see a p51, but actually fly in it.
Name checks out
I had the honor of seeing one taxiing at my home airport just a couple weeks ago. Had to do a double take. I’m dying to see one up close.
Tom is an amazing pilot just like his character. Top Gun Maverick pays tribute to the wonderful world of aviation.
Pays tribute to Naval Aviation. Navy Wings are made of Gold...
Beautiful P-51. Tom is more than just an actor. He is an American bad-ass. Much respect.
Knowing that aviation is something Cruise is personally passionate for and that the original Top Gun is what sparked that interest just made the movie that much more enjoyable. Seeing Cruise in his own personal P51 made the whole closing scene.
Long time pilot and aviation enthusiast here and that modified P-51 is a gem. But Jennifer Connolly stole the show in TG Maverick.
Spent most of my life as a military pilot, never even sat in one. I’m envious. Great airplane, I’d go for a ride any day.
I was at work one day and two Spitfires flew low over the site ; my collegue said "i bet he didn't wake up this morning and think "fucking hell, i have to fly a Spitfire today..."
As they went over cheers went up all across the site ; we were building a new plant for Mercedes and everyone knew the German staff were all miserable bastards 😃
@@jimmytgoose476 my first assignment was to the UK. Went to many air shows where Spits flew. Another amazing airplane.
I miss the big airshows at Duxford so much . Multiple Spits and Mustangs all at once . We spoke to some elderly Americans who were really excited to see the Spitfires ..
"I'm sure you have Spitfires in America too !"
"Oh yeah, but they don't fly them like this ! They just fly back and forth across the field but this is beautiful ! "
Between displays he showed us a big book he had just bought from the museum about the American air forces in Britain during the war that had a picture of some of squadron mates - and there he was , 60 years younger ! My gf gave him a big hug and we all shook hands . Lovely bloke 🥰
@@jimmytgoose476 I see Duxford now offers flight experiences in a P51, and in the US of course Stallion 51 have several down in Kissimmee...

"Tom has a Mustang!" , "Oh nice, I love those cars. Which year?" "The fricking' 1942 P-51 Mustang"
Still get choked up every time I think about the ride I got in Chuck Hall’s P-51D “SixShooter”.
My favorite individual plane! The first airplane I have memory of since it was a regular at my local airshow when I was very young.
How could you NOT geek out with Tom’s P51 ☺️
It felt wonderful seeing it in the hangar for Tom's Cruise's entry in the film - you could see how much he really cares for it in that scene.
I'm sure Cruise has professional maintainers but you don't own and fly a P51 without knowing it inside and out. Cruise wasn't pretending when he was wrenching on his plane in that hangar scene.
During the entire movie ever since I saw the P51 in the beginning of the movie, I was silently begging them to use it at some point and when I saw them flying it at the end I about had a heart attack
What can I say? I love the P51.
there's a video with Tom Cruise taking James Corden out in the Mustang as well. I think he mentions this one didn't see combat, was used to train Tuskegee airmen.
fanboy
It was kind of a spoiler in the trailer - seeing him flying it in the trailer, but not before the mission kind of took away some of the "jeopardy" of the situation.
Ol' Tom talks the talk and walks the walk.
Kind of surprised he didn’t go with the Corsair as it was one of the iconic Navy fighters in WW2. The P-51 was Air Force
I remember getting a tour of that P-51 many many years ago. At the time it was called "Montana Miss." Mr Cruise then had it renamed the "Kiss Me Kate" either before or during his marriage to Katie Holmes. It is easily one of the cleanest P-51s I've ever seen. It was produced in 1944, and is a F-6K, or the photo reconnaissance version of the plane, which is how it was flown in period. Basically a P-51K-15NT model, but with several portholes for cameras to take pictures through.
Also, I love the inclusion of Steve-O Hinton in the project. Probably the finest P-51 pilot currently flying. He was my favorite pilot to root for at the Reno Air Races every year.
This guy is living the dream, he lives like there's no tomorrow and at this point I think he just does movies to fuel his wish list. He is one of the greatest action stars of all time doing his own stunts. Jackie Chan another greatest of all time. Keep up the great work Tom 🤙
Amazing pilot and an amazing man amazing actor cudos Tom I love your work you've been my favorite actor since May 12 1986 Top Gun Maverick is the best movie I've ever seen
Wait, Tom Cruise is an actual pilot? Mind blown.
John Travolta to
Jennifer....you got to do three things that most guys would kill to do in a lifetime: 1. drive a Porsche 2. Sail a sailboat 3. Fly in a Mustang. You lucky girl.
Tom Cruise is everything. He really is Maverick.
Saw one of these at Eastbourne couple of weeks ago. After the Typhoon and the Red Arrows it was easily my favourite, that Rolls Royce Merlin, and the whine of the airflow through the gun ports. Such a beauty
Typhoon is a F***ER when it just points its nose to the sky and CLIMBS tho isn't it :)
Tom is the TOP G !
0:36 I'd love to see that movie. BTW, Robin Olds' story would be perfect for this ww2 top gun movie
😂
What's wild is that despite being better part of a century old, that P51 is good for like 440 mph!!! That's darn near as fast as some modern light jets. Thing was a BEAST!!!
P51 is one of the greatest aircraft ever made! Gotta love the rols Royse merlin engine in that bad boy!!!!!!!! Listen to it purrrrrrr!
La buena fortuna cubre a Tom, por su arduo trabajo y dedicación, es famoso, millonario y sobre todo...¡Tiene un P-51 Mustang! ¡What a lucky man!
I too love the P-51 Mustang! but remember, it's a FIGHTER first, Airplane second. she was built for combat, but still a beautiful plane. Tom takes amazing care of it that's for sure.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Tom's next movie should be in space. It's the only thing that he hasn't done yet. Woo! 😂
Watch Oblivion.
Tom Cruise living legend with eternal youth
When she says "he's an amazing pilot", makes me think they've done it at least once LOL
There is a TH-cam video where the owner (and very rich offcourse) of a very well restored p-51 that took part in combat, explains not only the running cost of the airplane but also that he feels that he is a custodian of the airplane and not the owner and some day he will give this privilege to another custodian to continue to preserve this piece of history.
"I may forget about them tomorrow, but they'll live with that memory for the rest of their lives. And that's a gift."
Jennifer Connely still looks so good. Loved her in whatever movie she was locked in a target was lmao
I'm the same age as her. (51) She looks in her 30's. i look in my 60's :D
Career Opportunities
Yeah she does. When they first showed her in the movie, my first thought was, "Still got it."
She never looked better than when she was in the Rocketeer.
@@roadwarrior1459 Ahem. Mulholland Falls has entered the chat.
All the haters out there , this guy can actually do most of the stuff he does in the movies, from trick shots in the colour of money to flying fighter planes…unreal.
The P51 was the best long range patrol plane, and the Spitfire the best short range fighter in WW2. Both supreme in their respective roles.
If this film does anything right, it’s making me want to be able to one day fly a P51..!
The P-51 is the prettiest plane ever. Hands down.
I like the iconic engine sound. Lots of movies. Incredible that Tom has one of those.
Tom Cruise is Soo incredibly impressive not only a great actor but also a daring pilot flying those planes for real!! He's overwhelming! The flames from the plane really scared me like Jennifer said! 😓😆
I love old warbirds from 30s and 40s It's always amazing and exciting to see someone transform thier dreams Into actually reality. I have a lot more respect for him now .
If top gun was a 1940 show. The Spitfire would be the star without a doubt. No question about it, most iconic, legendary and famous aircraft ever built.
I absolutely love the P-51 Mustang! One of my favourite WW2 fighters.
World War 2 really brought about some beautiful fighters. P51 , hurricane , p40 , spitfire , corsair and others.
never forget James Cordan scared flying Mustang with Tom
Any film with a P-51 is gonna be peak kino.
The 'ol Montana Miss. Went to school with a guy who worked on the crew for the previous owner. Was hangered in Kenosha WI. Crazy to see Tom Cruise owns it now...
I like Tom Cruise a lot more after watching this. Actually, I have always admired his work. The fact that he owns a stellar example of the sexiest airplane ever built is icing on the cake.
tom needs a thunderbolt...come on tommy, it's fun and a good investment.
Tom really loves the United States with all his heart
Most handsome actor and pilot combo - Tom Cruise
Really cool that if you buy the movie all the extra/special features are on youtube and were basically shown before the movie even came out. Knowing it was going to be a big hit or watched by many…they gave us like 40 mins of extra stuff, which again is widely available on youtube…The original had like 4 hours of behind the scenes. Thanks paramount. If you are interested in buying the movie, hoping for some cool behind the scenes or features…don’t. It is all on youtube.
Yeah the P51 is a good choice for this film.. but i got a feeling if they did top gun back in the day it'd be corsairs, or maybe even a dual prop plane like a P38.. and yes.. not to stroke the man's ego, but after watching this, he is one hell of a pilot..
I'd say Bearcat, Grumman plane and the hottest thing in the US Navy, at least for a short time.
Probably not p51 in the 1940’s top gun more likely corsair or hellcat, probably more likely the hellcat due too the legendary kill/death ratio over the japanese
Then let’s hope “Devotion” turns out to be a good movie, you got Corsairs in there and the same company that filmed Top Gun 2 to do the air scenes
@@kilianortmann9979 The Bearcat missed out on World War 2. So Maverick would have flown the Wildcat, Corsair or Hellcat. Although if you want to keep Goose. He’ll need to be in a Dive Bomber such as the Dauntless or Helldiver.

NAVY!!
Yes even F-22 pilots geek out over a P-51 Mustang, it is the most beautiful thing man has ever created
I had no idea tom was a pilot irl... and from the sound of it he's pretty good. makes the movies that much better lol
I'm more fond of the F4U Corsair. I hope to get one one day and roll along side with the Mig and 5th Gen Ace.
Just saw your Corsair comment after I left one of my own. My dad knew a guy that flew one in WW2 and later got rich in the canned food industry. I don't know the entire story of how he acquired his Corsair, but when I saw it around 1980 it had been restored and looked brand new. I had no idea of the plane's historical significance at 5yo, but I was in awe of the thing, as most little boys are when encountering such cool things like planes and fire engines. I do wish that I could remember more about the experience.
Corsair is cool as hell but for a recreational pilot it can be tricky to fly and land. The p-51 you can’t go wrong with.
@@dustindubbo2892 Yeah, I remember seeing a video that showed an airshow mishap in which a Corsair pilot clipped another plane on the runway because he couldn't really see straight ahead.
Well Devotion is coming soon which stars Hangman's Actor Glen Powell and the famous F4U Corsair vs MiG-15
Agree, the late and great Dale Snodgrass(also the high time F-14 pilot of all time) who also flew both the P-51 and F4U at airshows, said that if he had to go into a dogfight, he would choose the Corsair over the P-51 anytime. Also more beautiful IMHO.
Steve: If Top Gun was made in the 1940s, this would be the star of the show!
Vought F4U Corsair and Grumman F6F Hellcat: Are we a joke to you?
Wildcat-not the fastest. But it was shooting down Zeroes before it was cool.
@@ph89787 The Navy pilots developed team tactics to overcome the limitations of the Wildcat. Avoiding getting into a turning fight with the zero was also essential for survival.
0:36 If Maverick was a US Army Air Force Pilot. But since he's in the Navy, his choices would be an F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, F8F Bearcat or F4U Corsair.
the latter being the one that beat the Mustang om a direct comparison back in WW2
@@dravya1 wasn’t there a dogfight in South America involving the Mustang and Corsair?
Also if they want to keep Goose. Maverick would have been a Dive Bomber pilot. So SBD Dauntless or SB2C Helldiver
@@ph89787 had not heard about that dogfight, I’ll certainly look into it! I was basing myself on the actual tests done by the US Navy
IIRC the Bearcat did not quite get into service fast enough to see combat in WW2. I think it only missed by a couple of months. If there was to be a WW2 Top Gun, Maverick should be a Hellcat pilot, IMHO.
The Hellcat is top dog for WW2 Navy, not sure if the Marines used it that much, F4U Corsair served them well though.
To be fair, if I had his money I'd have a Mustang too! Fair play to him. 🙂
Top Gun Maverick Cast: Wow.........Tom Cruise blows me away with his stunts and flying.
Mission impossible cast: first time?
Fulfilling a childhood dream 😁

Pound for pound the best fighter plane ever built: The P-51 Mustang
Beautiful plane! I believe Tom Cruise and John Travolta came to our little slice of heaven in Kentucky to see the Glacier Girl take flight. First time since WW2 that the P38 too flight! Crashed in Greenland on their way to Europe and was saved by a family friend and restored to perfection! "Glacier Girl Middlesboro, Ky" great movie!! TC never disappoints, never!
I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Navy gave him an honorary promotion to the rank of Captain for this movie. Not saying he earned it the hard way but, I wouldn't be surprised.

With the school founded in 1969, a Vietnam-era Top Gun (maybe starring Viper, also Maverick's dad) would make sense. Maybe flying the F4 Phantom. Tom Skerritt (Viper in the original) is pretty old by now, but maybe the movie can basically be him in 202X telling the story of his and Mitchell Sr. adventures during 'Nam and the first years of the TOPGUN program.
My grandfather said that plane saved his life at least once when he was in the army. He was a big fan. Ha
Awesome as the P-51 is, if Top Gun were made in the '40s it would presumably be F4U Corsairs, the most advanced Navy fighter, featured. At least assuming they kept with the whole Navy thing.
