I have all new respect for the editor of the film. You have six separate cameras in the cockpit each with hours of film to go through times mulitple planes plus all the other cameras mounted outside the planes and on the ground to get all the exterior shots. Good thing everything can be done digitally now. You wouldn't be able to make this film relying on standard film stock like the first Top Gun movie.

The camera on plane reminds me of old featurettes about how Tony Scott wanted the F-14 scenes to be filmed on an actual F-14 but the cameras back then were too huge and bulky to fit inside the F-14 and thus they had to act from a mockup cockpit
If only Tony Scott could see this movie...

It's too much effort. Major studios don't have the same enthusiasm anymore. They simply follow the "minimum effort maximum profit" mindset like in any other businesses. Sadly, Top Gun Maverick might be the last film that was made like this.

@@billielachatte4841 unfortunately, it is cheaper and safer to just throw some money at CGI crap than going out and doing it practical. Even for Top Gun Maverick they would have seriously considered doing it on green screen if it hadn’t been for Tom Cruise being “Hell, No”. But too many other productions don’t have someone with Tom‘s influence and power, hence the unfortunate trend of bland soulless CGI overload instead of real quality.

So... they are flying the F/A-18F, the 2 seat model. I can just bet they have TC in the back and the real pilot both wearing the Maverick helmet, so the camera cluster gets a front shot of TC and at the same time gets the over the shoulder shot of the pilot in the front. That way the cuts between the shots have seamless continuity of the surrounding terrain, bank angles, horizon, etc.
Best aviation movie ever, best action movie ever, a lot of great work done here. I'm a little biased as I had a career in naval aviation. It makes some of the technical errors (or at least 'deviations') a little too obvious, but overall it's a pretty accurate portrayal and story line. There have been 2 distinct instances were other countries did missions which were basically what we saw in the film.
It also is a good representation of how the USN fighter role has evolved. The F-14 at the time of the first movie was strictly a fighter. The F/A-18 is a multi-mission platform that is as much about dropping bombs as it is fighter engagements.

I'm not a huge movie-goer but now have seen TG Mav in essentially every screen format. Of them all ScreenX was something else. I've been activelyy promoting to all of my close friends who've also already seen it, because I honestly want everyone to experience it before it's gone forever. You'll really never get to see Joseph Kosinski's extra footage on three screens ever again.
If anyone's on the fence bc they've already seen TG, please please go (and be sure to sit a little more towards the back)! Hoping Paramount keeps it on there for at least a few more weeks!

@@Neojhun I think I understand what you are saying. I guess my response to Jorge is more of a follow up to Big Basher’s statement. Jorge is saying the only major disadvantage is resolution, while that is simply not the case. 16 stops of dynamic range, full frame sensor, prores RAW recording, Sony Venice colors, and much more play a big part. While Basher is missing out on 6k, he’s also missing out on the things that make up a great cinema camera. The resolution isn’t the only disadvantage here. That’s what I’m trying to say. These Venice cameras are also capable of recording at 60fps in 6k or 120fps in 4k so, there is a big disadvantage here.

Hyperbole overload!! Though not the go-to camera for Hollywood blockbusters, the Sony Venice is an amazing camera, it's been out since 2017 (so, not new) and used on countless TV shows (Ozark, Boys, For All Mankind) and films (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Black Widow, Bad Boys for Life). Venice has always had an option called Rialto that allows the sensor head to be separated from the camera body (not new). It is groundbreaking to put it in an F/A-18 and the shots they captured are spectacular, but they really went over the top on the hyping the camera. Settle down guys.
