I enjoyed a lot this video. I remember an old lesson in art history about Giotto: he was the first (in his time) to understand than the colors resonate with each other. I remember this every time I’m working on my portraits. It always helps
Whenever I think of cherubs, I don't think fluttering naked babies-- it's always Giotto's cherubs zooming around in little pastel colored robes. Thanks for mentioning the connection!!!
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge with us. It was incredible to see your thought process put to action. I could feel the texture and softness of the Santa's hat and the stunning shadows and depth that give it such realism. Without a doubt you are an extremely talented artist but an even more incredible teacher. I never leave your channel without learning. Thank you for your time.
Thank you so much. I worry about teaching because to be honest, I'm winging it based on what I wish instructors had told me. Your feedback is incredibly helpful.
You are so welcome! As we were doing the final edits yesterday, I actually asked my editor/son, "is this a boring video?". I was pretty worried about it, especially after he responded, "well, not every video we put out will be the best ever." Thanks for the feedback, I feel less angsty about it now.
11:20 I just loved that thought process! To be honest, I used to think that my brain was weird doing that. 😮 It can take me forever to have a complete image of the object and after that I have to start my drawing. I thought I was weird or just slow, because it seems that others do everything ‘spot-on’. I so value your way of teaching. It’s likefresh among all the other TH-cam artists. Thank you for this.
Judging from the reaction, there's more of us than either you our I thought. I don't mind the moniker "Overthinkers" because I frequently remind myself not to do think too long on projects. What would you call us? We need a club name, LOL.

@@lap83199 Thanks! I debated a long time about the bell because I can only imagine how annoying it would be to jingle with every step. Also makes it hard to sneak down a chimney in the middle of the night, LOL.

I was shocked too. I literally said to a Copic demonstrator, "wait, you're doing what?" and she had to show me several times. It was kinda like if someone showed you how to grate Parmesan cheese with a motorcycle. "Uh... okay... but why?"
If you don't tell me how you're getting into my house to spy on my rookie efforts I'm calling the authorities 🤣 I took up art in my 30s (and I'm still in my 30s) after spending my life making safe decisions to bring me and my family financial stability. Now that I have more time and some money to put toward hobbies, I decided to try art as I've always been intrigued but afraid. I do painting too and this really made me reconsider why I think so differently when using paint vs markers. I asked for some more alcohol markers for Christmas so hopefully I'll have more of a chance to practice these techniques.
Hahaha. I learn a lot listening to students talk during class breaks, plus I have a couple of membership groups where the students post comments and there's always good tidbits about their work habits. At one point, one of my local classes was all nurses and elementary teachers (weird, right?) and they LOVE to talk process. So my spy camera is always in the classroom, not your kitchen, LOL. I love students who rediscover art after years away. It's one of the reasons I keep teaching. There's a wonderful maturity to how rediscovered artists work.
So now you're judging me!!!😂. How do you know about my binder...s!?!?!? I never told anyone about my binders. Lol😂. My family even gets mad about them, because I can never keep them nice and neat in one area. They're always spilling out all over the place. I usually hear someone kicking one and cursing me, that their toe hurts from kicking one of my floating binders!!! Of course, you'd have to end this with, you see me!!! Where exactly is this hidden camera? Are you tapping into my computer, phone or tablet camera!?!? Snowden said I needed to keep those camera blockers!!!😂

Wow, love this ... the way you did the white fur pieces up against the red hat, bringing the red pencil 'into' the white, so cool 🙂
Thank you so much! It was a detail from one of the photo references, not my idea but I know a good detail when I see it :)

This is a terrific video. It's interesting to hear your approach to selecting your palette - and of course the hat is gorgeous. Thank you!
