I was looking a descent version of this song....it only takes one line to know to continue or not....this one is great all the way...never heard of Thea...a real singer ....
Didja see the fictionalized bio pic of young Dylan by our terrific PoTown, Ore indie film director Todd Haynes? Or get the double soundtrack CD album? An indie artist then located in Brooklyn who I'd never heard of, Mira Billotte was chosen by one of the Sonic Youth crowd advising screenwriter\director Haynes. I only learned all this after finding the CD soundtrack and being floored by the version of this enigma wrapped in a historical riddle. Give a listen to: th-cam.com/video/gZ6k_opLFbs/w-d-xo.html Not sure Mira Billotte has continued to make records with any of her indie experimental music projects. To hear her close to hoot-night yet so internalized acoustic version and then learn she mostly makes experimental tech recordings also shifted my paradigms.... Thea makes a solid fist of anything she tackles but this song of Dylan's is an odd choice, particularly when combining electric guitar and mouth organ. It's a queer song embracing one of the queerest lines ever in song writing, namely "I told her with my voice." An immensely contrived rhyme. Whilst Dylan wrote some outstanding poetic lyrics this is not an example! Songs should always be judged on their own merit, not purely on reputation. And writers should not be afraid to bin some of their tepid creations!
The rhyme may be forced, but the song is beautiful. It's about being trapped in a relationship and the longing for freedom. This arrangement and Thea Gilmore do a great job of bringing out the song's conflicted emotions.
