Very Creative, this really helps. Good to know thanks. And another idea too is using a reinformant bracket over the stud for maximum support.

Well, good catch on the weight issue, but a pro may, or may not, want to just crank up the springs. Springs are sized for a specific weight. Winding them up won't change that, it just causes a different set of problems.

Very true. My springs were definitely too small. They were able to get one more turn out of them. One finally broke last month. They were 13 years old. And 3 years after adding the extra weight. I upgraded to a bigger and better spring.

@@NeaterNest Happy to hear it. I like to "upsize" springs too when the opportunity arises. I helped a friend change springs on his door, and, if my math is correct, those springs should last 70 years. 😁
So, I'll never change them again. 😉

Glad it helped. Did your repair work? make sure you get your spring tension adjusted so it doesn't happen again.

Where did you get the parts? I need to do this now on my garage door. Thank you for this!

I purchased a metal stud from Home Depot. It’s usually near the drywall and concrete section of the store. It’s helpful to have tin snips to cut through the metal easily. Good Luck.
Also, make sure to have your garage door spring tension adjusted. The reason mine broke was because my springs were too loose and that make the garage door heavier putting more stress on the motor and the lift points. You should be able to lift the door up with 1 hand easily.

. . . This was super helpful. I would like to know how you insulated the garage door. TIA

Sorry I missed this message. I actually have a video coming out soon on that DIY. I did both pink insulation as well as the foil foam. Subscribe and you will get notified when it comes out.

if you don't address the reason it broke off the same thing will happen again, for example all that insulation you have on that door adds to the weight of the door which you would have to add tension to the springs to compensate for that other wise it will just do the same thing again, especially since your adding more weight to the door... it's all about balance.

    • @NeaterNest

You’re right Mitch. I had planned to have my garage door guy come out to add tension to the springs after installing the insulation. I have 3 kids so there is a lot of open, close happening and it broke before a tech could come out. I’ll do just about any DIY but I don’t do springs.
I eventually did get them adjusted and it’s all working great now.

You're correct on the weight and the springs, but some doors require a special reinforcement bracket to add an opener. Just looking at that brace makes me think that is one of those doors. A lot of doors that don't need the bracket even have holes marked for the standard non-reinforced bracket that comes with openers, so, if you don't see those holes, you may need to buy a bracket.
