      @ Bone Daddy well... lemme just say this - as one old dog to another, those new tricks are tough. This harp tuning has major promise, but after a few weeks, I just couldn't quite get my mind wrapped around it to where I could make it sound smooth. And THEN, going back to my "regular" diatonics, I was all turned around on them, too. Oh, the humanity.

    Your review showed on my recommendations here hours after I watched a long interview with Will, at "Harmonica UK". Here it is, it's hilarious and informative, I thought you'd like it. He tells how he came up with this specific tuning: there was a "123" project, a "456" project, and he still has the harps! Here: th-cam.com/video/F_aFm2_lkhw/w-d-xo.html
    Thanks for your review, always on point. I agree with you, it's a seriously cool toy, one I seriously consider a switch to, in the future.

    Very honest review ! I got a session steel in the key of D and yep they are more expensive but they have stainless steel reeds which makes them last a lot longer than all the other brass reeded harps... that's why they are more expensive... if it last longer then you don't have to buy another harp or reeds as much !

    very good review tim, to be honest i really don't like seydel. don't like anything about them but you did a fine job of demonstrating the various characteristics of the instrument. if there was one redeeming quality in the seydel harp for me your review would certainly steer me toward taking a flyer on one.

      Thanx, Blitz. The primary redeeming factor is the tuning which IS interesting. I wouldn't get one otherwise. Kinda wish Will Wilde had partnered with a different company, like Suzuki for example, or like Brendan Power did with Easthop, but so it goes!

      @@Tim48103 Yeah, I've been really happy with the Suzuki harps I got, like the promaster and olive. The olives are selling around $40 on ebay right now, along with the manjis, and I think they compete really well at that price. Only $10 more than a bluesmaster or harpmaster.

      I've had a few of the Seydel steel-reeded harps and no, the reeds themselves are about as responsive as brass or bronze phosphor, maybe just the teensiest bit "stiffer". They're meant to last longer, but I can't really speak to that since I don't play them very much

      @@cincinnatipedalsteel4347 hey, thanks. I have not played the power bender, no, so I can't comment on their relative benefits. Yes, the Wilde tuning is intuitive and easy to learn. But, get a low key. In the vid I use an A, and even that is hard to use in the upper octave. I would imagine a C harp would be a bear. So if you're gonna go for it, get a Bb or lower.... Cheers!

    Believe me, when I was harmonica shopping for a good beginner instrument, I noticed how much more expensive Seydels were than all the other major brands. Worse than Hohner in that regard.

    • @Tim48103
      @Tim48103  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, not for the economically faint-at-heart. I was curious about the tuning, tho, so I got one. For regular-tuned diatonics, there are TONS of cheaper alternatives that play as well or better. Still, Seydel has it's die-hard followers, so I guess there's something there - maybe I"m just too thick to see it.

    Is this similar to a half valved harmonica?

    • @Tim48103
      @Tim48103  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No - this is a different tuning completely - the valved harps (usually) are standard diatonic tuning, but include valves to (presumably) make various bends easier. The Wilde-Tuned harp here doesn't include valves.

    • @chickenman7252
      @chickenman7252 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tim48103 oh yeah I know the layout is different. So is bending on the 8 draw and other high notes easier on this compared to a half valved harmonica?

    • @Tim48103
      @Tim48103  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chickenman7252 well, they're draw bends up there with the Wilde tuning whereas the typical bends above hole 7 on a diatonic are blow bends (overdraws on 7 and 9 notwithstanding). If you're wondering if the notes provided by the 7 ad 9 ODs on a normal harp are easier to obtain on the Wilde harp using "normal" bending techniques, then yes, they are, but it's still not a cakewalk - those are some short little reeds up there, lol.

    • @chickenman7252
      @chickenman7252 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tim48103 well the half valved harmonicas also allow you to do draw bends on the 7,8, and 10 draws. Although it's only down a semitone and they're pretty damn tough as well since you can't over bend it.

    • @Tim48103
      @Tim48103  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chickenman7252 oh I see - well, to be honest, I've only ever had one - I think it was a Fender Hot Rod Deville - and it made flappy noises I didn't like, so I tore the valves off, which basically left me with an expensive Easttop T008k with a different cover plate design. So I guess I'll backpedal and amend my answer to: I'm not really sure!

    Yo Tim I bought a cheap little $10 harp on Amazon called the focus sound thunder classic I got it in the key of c and it plays pretty damn good as a matter of fact I like it better than the lee Oskar I have. But it's not better than the almighty dabell story I have

    • @giusepperesponte8077
      @giusepperesponte8077 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you’re looking for a cheap but high quality harmonica that doesn’t leak air like crazy and actually plays and bends really well, get an “easttop 008k.” To be honest, for $10, that harp is not going to be good. I don’t know how far along you are in your harmonica journey but that’s just too cheap to be a good harp. Having a harmonica like that will limit your playing and make you think that your technique is the problem when in fact, the harp is limiting you. This is especially true for learning bends and god forbid, overblows. I don’t know if it’s even possible to overblow a $10 harp.
      The easttop 008k is a 25 dollar harp that you can get on Amazon and it was the first harp I ever used. I quickly upgraded to a marine band crossover which is 3 times the price and to be honest, I had buyers remorse. The crossover was only the tiniest bit better and at 3 times the price, that’s simply not worth it. The easttop is quite frankly a truly amazing product. The value you get for that price is unbelievable and you could genuinely use only that one harp all the way up to a professional level and never be held back by the instrument. The product actually won an award in China for its design, quality, and overall value. It was voted as the most innovative and efficiently manufactured product in the country when it was first released. Truly impressive.
      I highly recommend that if a harp player is NOT a professional, just get a bunch of different keyed easttops so that you can explore different keys. For beginners, all the up to upper-intermediate level players, being able to explore different keys is far more important than having an overblow capable harp like a good Hohner crossover or a seydel 1847.
      If you’re a beginner, get an easttop in C, Bb, and A. Then later maybe get a G and D. Learn how to gap your reeds optimally so that you can get the most out of those harps. Then, use those harmonicas until you can bend every single note perfectly and are able to overblow hole 6 with a good, clean, loud tone. Once you get to that level, just go straight to buying a blue moon custom, or other similar custom harmonica maker, I just say blue moon because it’s my opinion that they sell the best quality product for the price. They are $200. This is the way that I believe is the most efficient way to spend your money on your harmonica journey. You can always learn to customize your own harmonicas to a high level as well but it takes a lot of time and a lot of effort just to develop the knowledge to do the work and the work itself can also be tedious and boring so it’s definitely not for everyone.
