I honestly believe that one thing Japan does so much better than any other country when making movies is telling "Slice of Life" stories.

Love both films; especially as they're more set in the "real" world. I love the scene with the older chap (forget his name as I don't have the film to hand) and his love (whom he lost) and there's a *crack* and he wakes up (it's a dream) and the *crack* is a log bursting in the fireplace. Who hasn't at some point dreamt about a loved one who is no longer with us and wished they were back in that dream world?

This one is so beautiful and calming and relatable....I watched it many times and cried every time purely because it's so touching and innocent. One of my favorite scenes are around the pineapple. The family dynamics are spot on.
Watched it again today and I realized that she didn't have supportive parents when she was little which caused her to not know exactly what she loves to do as an adult. Finally this trip triggered something inside her and made it clearer as to what and whom she really likes and feels comfortable with. It's a story about self awareness and transformation.

Studio Ghibli was way ahead of our animation companies here in those respects. we're never going to see a princess have her first period, but certainly her first casualty. Great review. I want to see this movie.

    • @mooseclappin11

They're way ahead of most other Japanese studios too as far as animation. I mean, by biggest problem with most animation (especially anime) is that the animators are incredibly lazy. Reusing the same animation frames, character templates and etc. over and over again, it drives me nuts.
That's why it's always refreshing to see a studio like this that doesn't phone everything the fuck in.

This is something that always confuses me about western, and especially American, mentalities. Why is it okay for public schools to teach little girls about periods, sex, condoms, etc., but somehow it is not okay for a film to teach them about it? Also, Americans will react more strongly against the film if it is animated. In modern American animated films there are tons of poop and fart jokes, and we even see a dear take a shit in Open Season, but a girl getting her period is "inappropriate"?

Sex and certain parts of the human body are very touchy in a big part of the west for some reason. Teaching kids about the human body causes a good deal of controversy. But most people are ok with exposing kids to violence in movies, but put something about sexuality and suddenly it isn't ok anymore.

This is the best ever slice of life movie that has been put on the screen. The plot is simple, and yet tremendously beautiful - it shapes who the adult Taeko is as a whole. There are so many poignant moments that glanced over my head when I watched this as a kid (Japanese audio and English sub back then) and when I watched this at the age of 30 right now, it's incredibly nostalgic and nuanced and relatable.

Okay, I stopped the vid at 1:17 to just say that the fact that Disney was scared of releasing this movie in America because there was a discussion of menstruation is completely hypocritical, because Disney in 1946 created a 10 minute animation entitled The Story of Menstruation. Okay, unpausing.

After watching the movie, which was definitely amazing and beautiful, I think that maybe one part of the movie that made Disney afraid to publish it was the scene where the father slaps Taeko. I know that the period scene might also have to do with it, but despite how small the scene was, the slapping scene was relatively grim (for a would-be Disney movie, at least). They quickly brushed over it, and Taeko didn't seem too upset about it, but that might be something that Disney did not want to be associated with.

Couple of years ago I watched like a half of this movie and stopped (not sure why - was is boredom or being sleepy) and then forgot about it. Yesterday I had an awful day, feeling depressed and tired, with no strenght to do anything. So I figured the time has come to watch it again. And I’m so glad I did! What a beautiful movie it is. There’re so many beautiful moments, which prove that the director is a very perceptive observer of people. I identified a bit with 27yo Taeko, with her need to leave the city, having no relationship, working in a corporation and having constant recollections of her past. I kind of understand Disney being hesitant to distribute it - apart from a "period" part, it’s really a film for adults. Not sure if kids would even get it. Anyway I highly recommend it.

This is more of some random thoughts and observations than an overview or review, some spoilers.
I just watched this night and thought it was an overall superb and endearing film. There is a lot of themes, the main ones I found where youth, nostalgia, passion, past vs. present, family/filial piety or obligation, and changes/growth in life.
You notice early how when the past is shown, the corner of the background are slightly not colored in, showing the ephemeral-ness of past memories while the present is in perfect illustration.
There were a few things I found could have been improved. The muscle facial animation or creases on the cheeks looked plain creepy imo, not just being realistic like Takahata was going for. The effect on me was that it make Taeko looked old, which isn't very pleasant to look at. Since that style was constantly contrasted or shown right after or before more traditional ghibli character "cute" face design, it was rather jarring. I'm sure this was one of the things Miyazaki would have objected to if he was allowed to work on the film. I'm kind of surprised this was never made into a live-action short because I think it would be perfect for it.
Some scenes like car drive to the farm and some of farming could have be shorten or edited out. Because on the one hand, this is kind of like a kid's movie with all the 10 year old Taeko's perspective that a kid could understand and enjoy. But it is almost 2 hours, too long for a kids movie, and has a lot of scenes of adults talking about rather mundane things or philosophically that would bore a kid watching and themes that kids would simply not understand.
They really didn't add much and they were long and made feel like I wanted to see the past Taeko more, but by the end it was fine. Some story plot points needed more development, a part of me while watching the movie wished this was a tv series with many episodes so all the little story points could be fleshed out, which I guess is what a lot of good movies makes me yearn for in a story, wanting a lot more.
For example, the Abe kid story, which felt like it came out of nowhere. I get that the purpose to demonstrate that at any moment, you can recollect the past in think deeply about it. But for the viewer it felt completely random because we got no build up or context to care about it necessarily at that point.
Taeko adult's monologue makes us feel close as she is expressing her thoughts like a diary but yet at the same time, for a large portion of the movie, she still feels quite distant as a character herself because we only kind of know her 5th grade self not her as a 27 year old woman. But we learn more a little more about her later on.
Her dad was a real asshole in the film. Not once did I think he show much kindness or remorse. Certainly in those days, the father of the family was very strict, conservative, and patriarchal. The way he demands his wife for the next course meal like servant for example. But then again, it was the 1960's, less then 20 years after the devastation of World War Two which could have made him have or reinforced very stern and unsympathetic habits. Think the dad experienced Grave of the flies and this is his ptsd aftermath.
There is one point where she is about to take the train to leave the countryside and said, I think "I wish I'd didn't bring my 5th grade self". I couldn't exactly parse that meaning or find a meaningful interpretation. It seems like from her past self, she didn't have the greatest childhood memories. She can't do math, her father didn't let her act, she got bullied by school girls and made fun of by some boys. But looking over it, it seems like a normal childhood experience. So I'm not sure that she mean't by she didn't want to bring her 5th grade self, maybe her naivety? But then her 5th grade self's childness gave her the courage or impulse to change her decision and go back so Idk.
I guess also the part about the period is really unique in anime and how it was handled story wise if thinks about it. Such a thing is rarely discussed in real life let alone an anime. Even I as a kid never once hear about periods in school in elementary or middle from girls so I guess such things was kept fairly secret for a reason.

Honestly it is a movie I feel all girls should watch. When I was 25 and saw the film I watched in in sub on TCM when they had their film fest for animated films and after the movie I bawled. Like it touched on so many things and I related to many things but just the beauty of the film in general is amazing. Even as a 30 year old I'm still getting misty. But anyway yeah it is just one of those films that once you watch it it'll stay with you and teaches a bit too.

It was the little details that struck me. Like where Taeko is sitting in the passenger seat of the car once, and as it takes off her body jerks backwards just the smallest bit from the acceleration.

In Disney's defense, this film is a little more mature than the average cartoon back then. Plus, during that time people were much more sensitive to certain things being in kids films (which is ironic considering the films released during Disney's Dark Age).

Very relatable movie that takes you down a nostalgic memory lane and concludes it with a BEAUTIFUL ending that is tear jerkingly relatable. From her disconnected dad who was home, but felt like he was never there, Even crushing her dream of becoming something big in a field she ACTUALLY excelled in. a mom who scolds her more than encouraging(even if she does something good), she ignored or didn’t consoled her “abnormal” daughter on many occasions, all because she wasn’t good academically and sisters who were just there. Childhood trauma can stick with you for a very long time. Her being able to actually vent all of that out during the course of the movie to the guy was healing and helping her get over it and start a new. Man it’s so much to unpack from this movie.

Absolutely terrific. I don't know if all English actors can just go and do an American accent so well, but Ridley certainly pulled it off basically flawlessly. Her voice *acting* is also really terrific too and other than Dev Patel as her love interest (who is good, but just not up to the high standards of most Studio Ghibli dubs), the dubbed version is actually quite good. You don't *have* to watch the original Japanese sub, unless you like watching subbed, foreign films. :)
In any case, Daisy is fantastic and both are great versions.

Studio Ghibli films are typically released in the US by Sony Pictures Classics, and other arthouse distributers, not Disney. It's very unlikely Disney even considered releasing the film (or any film like it) back during its original release.
