I think people of Sri Lanka don’t realize that there was never a clean way for Sri Lanka to avoid the crisis. Sri Lanka was always a twin deficit economy. So losing out on tourism income and loss of export income due to supply chain problems during the covid crisis was deadly. 2022 being the year when most of the debt repayments are due doesn’t help either. On top of that, the price of goods has gone up due to global inflation and oil prices are rising due to the Rus-Ukr war. It’s in seeing situations like this that many economists around the world argued that lock down and disruption in travel during covid will cause more harm to the world and countries than good. Sri Lanka is a good example of the harm that has been caused by disrupting things due to covid. Blaming the government for what the Sri Lankan people are experiencing and rioting is only going to make it worse. It is a rocky road ahead and hope Sri Lankan people hold their nerve and get through it calmly.

@CHAOS Someone mentioned something similar to me in another video if I remember. But, I am a bit skeptical about that. The math doesn’t make a lot of sense for that to be true. It sounds like a conspiracy theory. The fact that Sri Lanka was always running on a twin deficit and that it did not have its usual income during the covid crisis does explain the lack of money by itself, no? I also assume there was high expenditure during this time due to covid related spending? Surely, those people couldn’t have stolen much if they did given the lack of income and expenses in Sri Lanka during that time?

Well said. But the problem is most Sri Lankan middle class citizens doesn't understand this. They blame the government and rioting only unstable the country beyond recovery.

Hey is this Somalia or any other poor nation without any potential to flourish.
We always had good agricultural soil for but not the brain for the president who suddenly wanted to switch for Organic farming overnight which no sane president in the world would try. *As a result we don't have enough rice, vegetables to feed ourselves.* Now we have to pay double price for Myanmar to import more rice while spending precious usd.
The same Gotabaya blamed previous government for dealing with MCC agreement but we had to lease the useless Hambantota harbour to China for 99 years which no people had any concerns with.
Rajapaksas initiated all government projects in the last few years with debt money which didn't even gave any return and yielded nothing but loss.
Eg. Hambantota harbour, Mattala Airport, Port city, Nelum kulana and many more.
*Look at other countries and see, all of them were affected by covid and Russian- Ukraine conflict but none of them fall into crisis like ours. Stop saying something for the sake of justifying the wrongdoings of Rajapksa and their voters.*

@@titanmad2013 Look, I have no horse in the race. I am just pointing out what I see as something of a misunderstanding that seems to exist among Sri Lankan people.
You asked whether Sri Lanka is Somalia. While it isn’t Somalia, it hasn’t really been that much better off. Sri Lanka’s production in the past 100 years with respect to most of the crops have been nowhere close to self sufficiency. The space for crops are limited and depending on the rain, the yield fluctuations are high. The electricity grid relies on hydro, and as a result has been always susceptible to power problems. There aren’t too many clean alternatives since Sri Lanka cannot really build nuclear reactors or have a way to dispose of the waste safely. In terms of production, Sri Lanka pales in comparison to India, China, Bangladesh and such. So while I understand that this is hard to hear, Sri Lanka isn’t a country that is just suffering from mismanagement. It is short handed on the front of resources and what it currently has to offer. Not saying that this means Sri Lanka is doomed, but it is important to know where one stands before one thinks of where one can go.
You say that your government switched to organic fertilizer overnight. What you do not seem to be aware is that this was done because the Sri Lankan economy was already under strain at the time. If money was spent to import the fertilizer or materials needed, you would be facing this same problem in January instead of now.
As for the airports and shipping ports, I do think those were a waste. But, what I do not understand is the reason for lamenting over them now. They were built sometime ago. There were other governments in power after they were built that according to my understanding, took a ton of loans themselves without no accounting as to where it was spent. So to now suddenly erupt and go after just a particular set of individuals is just meaningless. While it may help vent anger, it certainly destabilizes the country with no guarantee that things will get any better from it as well.
You final question connects back to your first statement. You may not realize this but every country is suffering today under inflation and climbing gas prices. The reason why Sri a Lanka is suffering more is that not every country has debt payments and maturing bonds to pay in 2022. On top of that, not every country was equally affected by COVID related expenses. So to say that Sri Lanka is undergoing a unique meltdown due to a conspiracy theory is not going to help as far as I can see.

Let's force the government to get renewable energy .. At least we should protect places like this that bring in foreign exchange .. From then until today the public service has not worked for the people 🤬🤬

    • @titanmad2013

Do you think Renewable energy could be generated for free? Without any initial investment amount paid in dollar?
Blind supporters were saying "ජය වේවා" everywhere when Rajapaksha spent billions of usd on Hambantota harbour, Mattala airport and Port city. Nobody had brain to think what's important for the country and what's not.
These nationalistic and often racist supporters of Rajapaksha suddenly woke up from coma and now blaming them, eventhough the Rajapaksas were corrupting and wasting debt money on useless government projects for many years.

@@titanmad2013 I think the country's fall into this situation is in a way a good thing that has happened to the country. The time has come to punish those who exploit the country's resources in the name of politics. Even if you talk about coma, every government has worked to silence many who have raised their voices alone. So it was agreed that it was better to endure than to raise a voice😞
