It certainly happens. I just realized I've recently hit 500 vinyl records in my collection. It's very tough to find the time or even the desire to play them all. I've recently come to find that you'll drive yourself crazy just thinking about it like that.
Instead, I like to think of records as kind of like insurance. Insurance is something we rarely use, yet it's nice to have it when we do use it. In purchasing a record, I'm ensuring that I have it on hand for the rest of my life whenever I get the itch to play it.
I find it's nice to just be happy thinking of being the owner of albums, remembering that hunt, remembering the time I obtained it, and how happy it made me feel. To me, that's what truly makes a purchase worth it; not so much that I'm constantly playing it or the number of times I've played it.
That said, I do try to cycle through my things when I play records and think about what I haven't played in a while when deciding what to play.

Same here. I have mostly OG's and early reissues and don't both with reissues for the most part. That is unless I get those reissues at a lower than Discogs median price and they improve on the OG. MOFI generally does not except for specific artists like Dylan and Miles Davis

This problem also happens to me, in CD and vinyl format. We could probably start a club. In my case, it is largely related to online shopping. In order to reduce shipping costs per album, it is often better to buy several CDs and/or vinyl records. And there is the main purchase, and all the secondary purchases. These secondary purchases sometimes take time to discover and play. In my case, to control purchases that are never or rarely listened to, I occasionally make a list of albums to discover and listen to several times before buying anything else. It works relatively well.

For me, and this might sound strange, or perhaps not, Melinda, but vinyl records and music in general that happens to be on a vinyl record is like a friend.
Sometimes I pull out a record in my collection of 4,000-plus LP's that I literally cannot remember the last time I played it. I'm age 58 and I started to collect vinyl seriously at the age of 14. When I say seriously, I mean taking very good care of them and handling them properly. My mother was extremely understanding of my love and passion for records and music and extremely very kind and bought me my very first little tiny "high-end" stereo system. Or at least that's what I thought it was at the age of 14. She bought me a Hitachi turntable along with a 15 watt Technics receiver and two very small Technics speakers and I thought that little audio system was so badass at the time. And throughout the years I bought so many records and some of them did not go over well with me when I first got them so I just shelved them. For years! One great example is Blondie The Hunter which I was believe was released in 1982. When I bought that record and I put it on and played it I was so disgusted because they had changed so much by experimenting too much and it simply was not my Blondie. It did however, have one super great song on it called Danceway that should have been released as a single and I believe it would have went to no. 1. It was sort of like their tribute to Motown with a brilliant Melody and an awesome vocal performance by the amazing Deborah Harry. And that's the only song I ever played from that record. I pulled the record out, play the one song Danceway and then put it back in the shelf and forgot about it.
Then back in 2005 I was setting up my new apartment and playing music in the background and I wanted to just play something different. I pulled out the Blondie The Hunter album and thought what the heck, go ahead and play it. And suddenly I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was amazing! After 23 years of never listening to that album the whole way through because I thought it was so horrible, it was actually super fantastic and I thought to myself, I have a new Blondie album from the original lineup! And I fell in love with the album and have complete respect for it to this very day.
Then there are the albums that you haven't played in so long that you literally can't remember the last time you played it but when you put it on and you played the record, it was like visiting an old friend and you feel so good that you've reconnected with that album.
Linda Ronstadt Heart Like a Wheel. Perfect example. I played the record a few weeks ago and I literally could not remember the last time I put that record on a turntable and played it and enjoyed it and loved it. It was as though I never had the record but yet I knew I had it, I just hadn't played it like in forever. And I played that record, both sides and it was like reconnecting with a very special old friend. Playing and listening to that album warmed my heart and I suddenly started to remember things that were going on in my life when I first bought the record and played it a lot at the time. Great memories. So very special!
Remember: Vinyl Records are our "friends". They can make us happy when we play them or just take us somewhere else as we're listening to them.

Funny, I started collecting when I was around 9 years old. The difference was and still is that nobody understands my love and passion for vinyl records. Sadly, I do not have any of the records I bought at that time anymore (I did not have much). My collection stayed around 9 or 10 records until I was around 16, then it started growing. I had around 60 records by the time I was 19 and then I stopped in my early 20s when CDs came about. I did not buy my first CD until I was around 26 or so and they had already been out for years at that point. Then around the very early 2000s, still having those 60 or 70 records I hung onto, I longed to get back into vinyl because I grew up with it. I got rid of a few of the records I did not want and was down to around 46 records to restart it. Now that collection has grown to 750+ records on vinyl. I have room for about maybe 25 to 30 more before I am literally out of room. My CD collection also grew, starting with about 4 CDs to now about 850 or so.
I am into restoring and preserving records these days as well. I went and studied everything about it for two years including doing my own experiments, etc. To me vinyl records are historical documents that should be preserved and enjoyed. I do not collect willy nelly to try to flip and such. I have never sold a record, rejects are given away to record stores. Records are meant to be played is my philosophy, not hung on a wall hoping the monetary value goes up or traded as a commodity. I'm not into modern day pressings. I prefer originals because those are historical and need to be preserved.

@@MelindaMurphy Well Melinda, I feel that Blondie The Hunter reminds me of David Bowie as in the way he would experiment with each album. There are no two David Bowie albums alike. In 1982 when I was age 18 I was seriously into New Wave Music for the most part. I love that whole new wave movement. Many of my heavy Rock Fans shunned me for awhile and could not believe that I would fall for such silly music but I didn't care because I thought that my friends were the silly ones to me because they weren't open enough to try and understand new things in music. And also the fashion was fantastic. In fact David Bowie released a song called Fashion.
Blondie The Hunter is a very dark album having only one single released from the album called Island of Lost Souls which bombed and as I said earlier in my other comment the song Danceway should have been released instead. I firmly believe it would have been huge.
Here is an interesting fact for James Bond fans out there: Blondie was hired to do the theme song for the movie For your eyes Only and that song appears on the album The Hunter. But due to financial obligations and timing and so forth they decide to go with the Sheena Easton version which is absolutely 100% different than Blondie's version. Blondie's version on The Hunter is like I said dark and it should have been the theme song for the movie James Bond For your eyes Only because of the lyrical content and the sound of the song. It fits in perfectly with a James Bond theme song sound.
      Blondie got ripped!
Melinda, try to get a copy of the album and listen to it. It's not like what you're used to hearing from Blondie. It's experimental yet dark and definitely doesn't sound like anything they've done previously.

      @@ericelliott227 Indeed!!
Vinyl records are historical documents. And I have actually gotten rid of probably about 20 180g LPs of Records I already have the standard original pressing of and it's not that big a deal. 180-gram records are not that big a deal. The Stylus of a cartridge it's so small and it can only go into those little tiny grooves so far and not reach the other side while it's playing. I know the original idea of a 180-gram vinyl pressing was for less resonance and so forth and less vibration to get through into your cartridge and so forth but really the guys who made the original albums are the ones that knew what they were doing and these newer 180-gram records are in the hands of someone else. Okay so maybe Jimmy Page oversaw the reproducing of the 180 g re-releases or even Robert Fripp was there when they were remixing and remastering King Crimson In the court of the Crimson King 180 g but in all honesty the only really reasonable reason to really buy 180-gram records is if you obviously don't have it in the first place or a lot of the albums that were released on CD only during the 1990s are now on vinyl and those are the ones you really want and collect if you like the music of the 1990s. Other than that there's really no read if you already have a really good copy of Bruce Springsteen Tunnel of Love as an example, for the most part there is really no need to go out and get the 2 Disc vinyl set that has only two two three song for side. The original Bruce Springsteen Tunnel of Love is perfectly fine the way it is. I bought a copy of the two-disc set of that album and to be honest with you, the original sounds better.
Now, there is one company that is making the absolute best current vinyl and they've been doing this for decades and that's Mobile Fidelity.
I have quite a few of them and they are the best sounding 180-gram reissues available today. Take a look at one sometime. The outside jacket covers are thick, sturdy cardboard. Not some flimsy cover that many come shipped in. I know they had the big deal about the digital thing and all that but that's a bunch of bogus because I got news for everyone reading this and that is every single reissue or current pressing record is pressed by using a digital source. The record company simply just sends the file to the presses and they make a lacquer and then they go out and they press them. They're all digital folks. Some sound digital and some sound warm and good and sweet and natural and they did a great job but they are still a digital source.
Music On Vinyl is probably one of the worst record manufacturers the modern-day. I have a few and they are extremely digital and they sound worse than a CD some of them.

    • @ericelliott227
      @ericelliott227 ปีที่แล้ว

@@tobymummert3035 Yes, the whole 180 gram thing is just mythology. The vinyl weigh/thickness makes no difference in sonics. There are also 200 gram records, which used to be thing, but not anymore. The problem with 200 gram records is that one may have to adjust their turntable setup to accommodate them. Again, no difference in sonics. I have older original pressings that are 160 to 180 grams! So 50 years ago or so it was part of the standard weight for vinyl records. So what happened? Profits, that is what happened. Also in the 70s there was the famous oil crunch so record manufactures had to come up with a less expensive way and more economical way to make records. So not only was the standard 120 gram made, but during the crunch they came up with "Dynaflex" and other names to make lighter and thinner records. I have a few Dynaflex records and can tell you with the utmost confidence that they sound no different from standard weight. Some Dynaflex records I have sound fabulous. The sonics quality of a record lies squarely in the recording, mastering and mix, period, full stop. Most of the stuff we hear about record weight/thickness, "virgin vinyl", the "quality of the pellets", etc. Is nothing but pure "audiophile" BS. The one tossed about the most is "Audiophile record" or "Audiophile pressing". There is no such thing. They should just say "unicorns". What is an "audiophile record"? What makes it "audiophile"? Answer: A sticker coupled with rumor or mythology, that's it. Sure, the nice weight of the record and high quality packaging is very nice and all, but it lends nothing to the sonics. It is just an expensive record one hopes will sound good.
As for Mo-Fi and the digital bruhaha, you are correct. Analog Productions claims to not be digital, but I suspect there is some digital process along the way. Many master tapes are in no shape to be passed around and travel and such and some no longer even exist in any useable manner. For example, if one wanted to reissue a Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers LP they would have to make a digital copy from a lacquer if one still exists or even from a standard issue record and then make a digital tape or what have you from that so it could be remastered, etc. The reason is because whatever Petty had on the MCA label was destroyed in the fire they had! Many master tapes were lost.
Want to do a Hendrix LP? Digital required because the master tapes have disintegrated.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the Mo-Fi or Analog Productions pressings and what have you. I don't know as I have never heard either one. They are likely pretty great for the most part.
Personally, I prefer to hear the music as it was recorded in the day it was. That is part of why I like original pressings. I pay no attention to all the chatter about "oh, the reissue is much better sounding or oh, you need the high-rez file or my favorite, "Oh the original sounds like crap and is not as good as the reissue, blah blah blah". I don't care. What sounds like crap to one person, sounds like angels singing to another and visa versa. The music I mostly listen to and grew up with is from the mid 60s through early 80s. Recording equipment and such has changed since then. So part of my philosophy is basically "a leopard can't change it's spots". The original recording is what it is and was meant to be at the time. That is important to me. If I did not see vinyl records of yesteryear as historical documents, but just liked some of them, then I would not care about hearing it as it was made and intended. I'd just stream it or get the new reissue of it or something.
I don't expect to ever hear a Mo-Fi or Analog Productions. etc. release. I have little doubt as to the quality of the packaging or media, but spending $100 to $300 on a single record is the definition of insanity for me if you don't have nearly unlimited disposable funds. The bulk of the price is for the packaging anyway. Indeed, album covers are also special, but I'm about the music personally and one can't eat album covers and records. If one has the means to purchase such records, then by all means go for it. There is nothing inherently wrong with it, but if one must decided between buying a record and putting food in the table or medicine or fuel for the car so one can go to work to pay rent or what have you, that is when caution must take the front seat.
Some reissues are more reasonable such as $25 to $35 and some of those have nothing wrong with them, but it is a mixed bag and one needs to do through research before buying. For example, I was looking to buy the reissue of David Bowie's Heroes LP. I don't have but one Bowie LP (Changes One). "Heroes" also happens to be one of my favorite Bowie songs as well. The reissue (on the Rhino label I believe) is around $25. I was willing to go there because the original pressings are nowhere to be found, one never sees them in the wild. I almost pulled the trigger, but upon further research found out that they butchered some of the songs and many who purchased that reissue were very disappointed. So I decided it is not worth my time. I might get the CD version at some point.
One of my favorite all time bands is early Chicago. I have original pressings of all their LPs up to 1978. I have made my own redbook digital CDs of them so I can play them without concern and such. I also would like to have some reissues as well just for giggles if nothing else. The Mo-Fi reissues they did no longer exist and if you find one it will set you back $400 used! Now we have the Rhino reissues. I'm still researching those and if they are anything like the Bowie "Heroes" reissue I'm not interested. Especially for Chicago as they were a Prog-Rock band back then and I am not interested in the 5 minute version of a 9 minute song. Then there are one or two "Steve Wilson" remasters. I have only heard his work through streaming, which doesn't give you any idea of what it sounds like. Steve Wilson (late of Porcupine Tree) also happens to be a passionate vinyl lover and knows a thing or two. I just bought his remaster of Jethro Tull's Aqualung on CD. Why on CD? 1) I'm not sure whether I will like it or not, 2) I'm not sure how it translated onto vinyl.
Thanks to Melinda mentioning it a few vids back I am also interested in picking up the Yes - Fragile reissue mastered by "Kevin" somebody? I forget the name, but she claims it to be right as rain and good quality. For $24 I'm willing to give it a try. I would not attempt repurchasing my entire Yes collection though, I have a ton.
I also hear that Friday Music is pretty bad as well.
As for taking a look at Mo-Fi reissues or what have you, looking at pictures on a website is about as close as I will ever come unfortunately. I'm also not concerned about flimsiness of covers and what not. Original pressings came in all manner of cover build, some super thick, some thin (usually the imports are thin and flimsy such as from Germany for example) and then there is the special packaging which has not ever been reproduced. I love the special packaging. For example, Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick came in a newspaper type format. The reissue of which there is only one I believe does not. It just comes with what I call a fake cover. Same thing with "Stand Up" which had a pop up in the middle and "Living in the past" which was like a coffee table book. I have originals of all those.

I call albums that I have not listened to in some time forgotten gems. I find I get into a rut listening to the same genre so it is nice to venture into my collection and hear something old become fresh. In the not so distant past I purchased small lots of records on ebay for one dollar an album and found artists that I never knew about but were well regarded such as Nicolette Larson hidden in my collection. Sometimes we get so caught up in the albums we don't have that we forget to appreciate what we do have.

As your collection grows over time, you will find this will be the case as there are only so many hours in the day with which you can work the job, go dig for LPs after work at your favorite spots and then exercise, prepare and eat dinner and then sit down and listen to your finds before its time to shower and head to sleep to do everything all over the next day. What your experiencing is perfectly normal- i am guilty of this but i am so glad to own these neglected LPs for when the perfect opportunity arises to give them a spin and relish in the reason why i purchased them in the first place... Keep up the triumphant video work and keep collecting these musical relics as you will thank yourself in the future

Actually, vinyl records are pretty robust if handled properly. You would have to have a poorly setup table or go out of your way to damage a record in a few plays. I have records that are 60 years old that play beautifully. Who knows how many times they have been played and on what?

I’m sure we’ve all had this at various times. Now I have a system whereby any new records that come in get cleaned and are stored separately in a crate over near my turntable. Only after they’ve been played do they get to go in with the main collection. It’s sort of like they’re in quarantine 😂

Hi Melinda, another thought-provoking video thank you. For me the point of having a collection is that its contents is there waiting for you whenever the mood strikes you. So as long as each record has a purpose and you can imagine the day when you are going to want to play it, that’s okay! But one needs to be honest in one’s analysis. I got out of bootlegs years ago because I realised that, with the proliferation of super deluxe box sets and archive releases of my favourite artists (Dylan, Beatles, Stones) I no longer had any need for them. All that said, next time you are feeling Beatley, you must get Past Masters or Mono Masters on the turntable, there’s great stuff on there you can’t hear anywhere else! Greetings from London

You are not alone when it comes to this issue. I should think that there are many, who have large record collections, and over time, simply do not go back and play the records that so interested them when they were released. I am one of them people myself! As an example, I purchased the box set of Let It Be by The Beatles when it was released. It is still in the vinyl shrink wrap. I suspect there are others I have yet to stumble upon. You presented a very valid point here in this video, and to be honest, woke me up a bit. I too now need to check and see what has been overlooked in my collection. As always, great presentation Melinda! 👏💯👍😁

I don't even see that as a problem. All my records are usually only played once or twice and recorded to cassette on one of my 14 cassette decks (Yeah, I have that addiction bad), and then when I want to hear that album, my go-to is the tape. I only record on high quality decks with CrO2 Type II or Type IV Metal cassettes so they sound exactly like the source record. It keeps your records and sleeves in great shape by doing that. So if you ever decide to sell some records to free up storage space for new ones, they are in top condition and fetch the best prices.

Melinda - you are doing great in this department compared to me!! 😅 Been collecting since I was 9 years old and have never gotten rid of a record or cd and it shows! They are all my friends.. lol I’ve got records I haven’t listened to for 40 or 50 years plus years! And many from the last 10 years that I haven’t gotten to. Doesn’t stop me from buying more!
But you are right the bigger your collection the harder it is to play everything with any regularity. I’m still trying to get my collection organized in a new location, cleaned, and fully inventoried in Discogs and CLZ. Not to mention my very large CD collection. It takes a lot of time when you have a large collection and get at all behind. Still it’s fun to collect and listen and even doing cataloguing and cleaning! As long as it’s fun, keep doing it and enjoy guilt and shame free!
P.S. You better check out your Target Tears For Fears! I got 2 warped copies.. 2nd was very slight. I think maybe because they put a bonus 7” in with the record…
PPS Ditto on the McCartney album… never listened all the way through to mine and I have 2 colors…. lol

Another thought provoking Melinda topic! Great job! So this is what I do. I take my vinyl LISTENING seriously. My collection on vinyl has been reduced from over a thousand records down to several hundred. I sold off what I didn't need and the albums that I LIKE but don't LOVE - I got on CD. The records that are the most important to me I kept on vinyl. When I play my vinyl I want to hear every record in my vinyl collection. Yes you may not be in the mood to hear every artist, but sooner or later you get to them. My vinyl records are played all the way through, and I enjoy my vinyl collection much more now that it is manageable. The CD's are played on the portables or in the car ect. and have albums that I may like but not important enough for me to buy them on vinyl. This way I still have the content, but have better control of my collection. I don't need every song I've ever heard in my life on vinyl. The memories are still there, even on CD. The vinyl is for the REALLY special ones. The records I go back to again and again and never tire of them.

I do this thing with my records where, if it’s a new record to the collection, I don’t add it to the collection until I’ve played it to keep it from getting lost on the shelf. When I catalog it on Discogs, I put the date I first played it. When I pull a record out, I add the date I play it on, so I can keep some kind of log on when it was last listened to. Kind of fun when you pull something you know you haven’t listened to in a while and see the last date it was played on.

Something that has really helped me with this process is a feature of the Discogs app -- shake your phone and it shows a random record from your collection. Great thoughts and a lesson to many!
Collectors collect. When collectors have more than they could ever use, they've created a library.
When record collections grow so large that a person couldn't possibly have the time to play just one at a time, then, that's why record changers were created. In the beginning, record changers could play one side of a stack of 10 records which evolved into playing both sides, unitierrupted. Then expanding to playing both sides of up to 16 records. There were some monster-sized consoles which evolved into playing both sides of 28 records(which may have become an early coin-operated phonograph). This was especially useful in the 78 rpm era and the original plan for the introduction of the 7" 45 rpm record. The longer-play 12" records became necessary and the longer-play 33 1/3 rpm records date way back also, but then fell out of favor because of disinterest.
Automatic record changing phonographs were a staple well into the 1970's. Many came inside of huge consoles which had other ways to play or listen to recorded media also, but still played a stack of one side of up to 10 records. As with the next generation of record changers, capacity was changed to 6 or fewer records.
During the in-between times, record-playing consoles were introduced were introduced which would hold, like a Jukebox might, 50 record albums and play both sides in sequence. These were the Seeburg home stereo consoles. They were cost prohibitive and were priced in the range of the finest stereo consoles available at the time and had all the features those other consoles could have with the addition of capacity. For those not into consoles but preferring components, there was another 50 LP player option which just had the changer mech, selection equipment and a built-in pre-amp, but then it was the size of a washing machine. I have one of each a Seeburg HSC3 and an AP1.
So my suggestion is, if you have the room, get one of these. You can fill it with your favorite albums intermixed with the ones you seldom listen to. You can select individual records and sides, like a jukebox, or you can push one button and it will sequentially play both sides of every album giving you over 24 hours of uninterrupted music.
Another option, which I also do, is that I record my records to a hard drive using a lossless recording format. It also gives you the option to convert to mp3's. So, it takes a long time, but record your record collection to a hard drive and anywhere you have a computer with a sound system, you can take your library with you.
As a warning, you will hear every tick and pop or defect on a record, which our stereo systems and headphones are designed to filter out. In case you system doesn't filter out the distractions, you can get add-on processors which will. Consequently, you can also get computer programs which will do the same for your digitized recordings.
Set the player to random play to hear selections you don't normally listen to. There are large capacity hard drives which you can hold in your hand, so physical size isn't an issue. There are even large capacity thumb drives which you can load your the mp3 versions you made and play on most any common car stereo. You can also load your lossless wav or flac files on a thumb drive, but will usually have to be played through a computer or a device which can play those kinds of files like a home receiver or portable player. Depending on the capacity of the card you have in it, you can also download your mp3s to any format of smart phone and listen privately. With blue tooth, you can play your recordings on anything which has Blue tooth. Hence, you have created you own streaming service and you choose the filler songs yourself.
So, there are boundless options to play your collections on, portable and permanent.

I'm in the same boat as you. During the school year (I'm a teacher), I work long hours and don't have a lot of time to listen to records. What I do have time for is ordering new records online. I do way too much FOMO buying and not enough listening to the records I already have. :-(
You're not alone! I'm browsing through the other comments and I think we should start a club for people who have more records than they have time to listen! The people in my life who don't care about records think I'm silly, but why again are they in my life? Not sure.... Oh, I married one of them.
Anyway, I really need to discipline myself and adopt a rule like I have to listen to a record I already have in its entirety before each new record I order.
As I will be the one enforcing that rule, I'm already predicting its failure! haha. Thanks for another great video! Stay cool and be happy.

I periodically go through an exercise where I choose a start date, then track every album I listen to until I have listened to them all. (Note: It's a good way to cull the collection.) I started reviewing my CD library (about 1600 titles) when I retired and it took me three and a half years to listen to every title at least once. This year I'm working my way though my vinyl library (820 titles at the moment). So far I have listened to every classical (60 titles) and jazz (50 titles) album in the collection, plus every used vinyl album in the general collection (to review my grading and determine if I want to upgrade them). Oh Melinda trust me this is common to record collectors! I have been collecting since the late 1960s and I have albums I haven't played for many years! I am moving stuff around at the moment and I have found things I had genuinely forgotten I had!! Wings over America being one of them!! Also Cheap Trick live at budokan and I was stunned love early Nazereth! Oh dear I think a weekend of looking at my collection! To me it's a positive as gems are waiting to be rediscovered!! A negative becomes a positive!

At least 1/3 of my collection is in this category. The larger your collection gets the more this happens. Look at the bright side, they stay in mint or near mint condition. I have at least 80 records that either have never been played, or one side has been played once. When you start filling in holes to get "complete catalogues" this gets even more pronounced.

Well if it helps any, don’t feel bad. I have a large collection of CDs and I’m constantly running across albums that I haven’t heard in 10 to 15 years, or maybe never at all 😆. And funny that you brought up
“ Past Masters. “ Until 3 weeks ago, it was actually another one I hadn’t heard in quite some time. But I was in dire need of hearing the faster version of “ Revolution “. In any event, the advantage of having a library of music provides the joy of rediscovery or digging up a treasure that I wasn’t even aware of until I stumbled upon it. This is what makes collecting so much fun.

I don't think it's a problem M. You are a music lover, but you are also a music COLLECTOR!!! You like OWNING music. To me that is an extra segment of music that a lot of people never get the chance to enjoy because, as weird as this may sound, there are lot of people who only want to "listen" to music lol. To me though, music can expand well beyond just he sound waves and I think as music lovers and vinyl collectors we take advantage of the other fun arms of music. If you suffer from not listening to given records for periods of time, try having 5,000 or more in records. I find more decent classical records on the very cheap regularly where I have to make it a conscious effort to play most of them once. Let's be honest, record collecting past 500-1000 records is a sickness we refuse to break away from. I'm trying to be more critical these days to not keep so-so records. I have a long way to go and am clueless as to how to get any kind of return on what I paid for them. Record stores are only interested in buying/trading if what you have can be quickly sold. Garage sales? A lot of work to sell maybe $2-3 in a day's effort. Could just do a big dump of records at the thrift store and be done with the extra baggage.

Hi Melinda, I can so relate to your video Melinda!!! I think I have probably half the amount of records that you do and I have the same problem. I have a lot of records I have not listened to in a long time. And it is just because there are not enough time/hours to play all the albums that you have not heard in ages. I think this happens to just about everyone. Every now and then I do look through all my albums and I always say, ("I have not heard that record in a long time, I will leave it out so I remember to play it"). I can certainly say that about 45's which I try to play those once a year. Do you have any 45's Melinda? Great topic. Stay well and take care

This is yet another example of how you've become a mature record collecting audiophile. Once your collection builds up, it's natural for some records to have long intervals between plays. You know that Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but you may be shocked to hear that I haven't played any of my PF albums for a long time. I'm off exploring other artists I've recently discovered like Rory Gallagher 😻or new bands and music genres. It's not that PF has fallen out of favor; I just have very wide interests. When my psych progressive rock mood hits me, you know that PF will be on the play list for sure. These days I'm favoring The Doors more than PF; The Doors usually get played first. Don't feel bad about not playing records and just enjoy whatever music you want to hear right now. 👍💖🎸😎

I dont have any music "I forgot about' BUT I have lots still sealed. Just because of Life things I have spent 2023 getting Vinyl out of the storage closet and into my Daughter's old room. Stereo is sitting on Kallax shelves but not out of their boxes yet. I have just over a Terabyte of music digitally and the only place I can truly listen to music is in the car at this time. Even in my room, I have a baby Monitor on so I can hear if my son seizures so any music I do play is through a bluetooth speaker when I try to get to sleep. I do believe as your collection grows that it is much harder to choose what to listen to. When I get in the car I hit random and cycle through alot because Im not in the mood for what shows up. Sometimes I drive an hour to work without hearing a whole song...1st world problems I guess. Hello Melinda ! It sounds to us like the hunting part of record collecting is sneaking up on you. We truly believe that you started to have the music you liked available , but the adrenalin of hunting has grown. I (R) have only 421 records and A has 194. I am about 20 from completion (not counting 11 grails) and A is about 15-20 short. Then we will own all from the back catalogue we need , and only have to check for new releases. That’s one of the benefits of a small collection. The other is that it all fits in a 8 compartment Kallax from Ikea , with the stereo on top. We’ve chosen wisely because of the VERY high prices here , except for used records , which stays between $2 to $20. (like I’ve been nagging about , countless times) My advice is to do what other vinyl channels recommend ; purge your collection. It’s hard but liberating. I’ve done it. You can too. Other collectors can find joy in those you don’t need. Take care. A&R

For decades people have said to me things like "What? you don't have that album?"... or... "How could you not buy that record?" and the truth is, I AVOID buying certain records, even if it's a record I'd love to have. Why? well, it's simply a matter of 'delayed vinyl gratification'. Quite a concept, eh? The idea is basically this... it's like saving up for the future. Example: I'm a major Beach Boys fan, but I purposely did not buy 'Friends' and 'Sunflower' knowing that as I got older I'd still have some great music to discover. Since those days I have bought both of those. I opened 'Friends' and was amazed to discover one of their very best efforts 40 years after it's release. On the other hand, 'Sunflower' remains sealed.... saving that for a day when I will, again discover a 'brand new' Beach Boys experience.

This is an enjoyable video. Welcome to record collecting; buying records and never listening to them. Now for even a dirtier secret of record collecting: Buying a record you never listen to and then buying it again at a later date and discovering it is an unplayed indulgence. One such record is Linda Ronstadt's, Prisoner in Disguise when it came out in the 70s. I meant to listen to it. About 5 years ago I found a nice clean mint used copy. and figured it would complete the collection. The shocking surprise was discovering it was a duplicate and the original purchase 40 later was still sealed with the price tag of $3.19 on it. I paid $3.99 for it used ... lol Have fun with your records and don't worry about what goes unplayed.

I just have never even found it on discogs in the vinyl format other than When You Love A Woman on a 45 Rpm. This is an album I hope that they finally put to vinyl one day. And like you, I also listen to the Journey Greatest Hits Volume 2 more than Volume 1. I've heard Volume 1 so many times over the decades and the tracks on it so many times through the years that it's nice to hear the tracks that didn't get quite as much play. And I love some of the ones on Volume 2 like Little Girl which was on their Dream After Dream album which a lot of fans don't know about unless they really get into collecting. I wish an would come out that would have just the tracks that hardly ever got any airplay unless an album side was being played over the radio back in the day :-) But what I'm really hoping for is an audiophile remastering of those superb 1978-1980 Journey LPs between Infinity and Departure. Some of the best songs they ever made were on those albums but nobody seems to be doing anything on reissuing or repressing these albums for some reason?
As for albums I don't, or I haven't, listen to in a while, I don't really feel an obligation to have to listen to them oftentimes. I may think of an album and then decide I'm going to listen to it later and not do it for months. But I don't feel any kind of rule or way of thinking that makes me think I have to listen to something if I just don't necessarily feel like it at the time. I know that's not exactly the point you were making either. And I do know where you're coming from. But I've got some albums that I don't know when I'll listen to them again but I don't feel any desire or need to listen to them or feel bad if I don't. They are albums I do plan to keep and I don't want to get rid of also. I just like to listen to what I want to listen to whenever the mood hits me or I see the album and think "I haven't listened to that one in a while and that looks good".
I got back into my vinyl collecting in either the end of 2020 or early part of 2021. I can't remember at the moment but I do know that in the first 2 years I bought almost 650 albums. And I have seemingly lost a few, even using Discogs to log them, that I totally forgot I picked up. I picked up a 1980s pressing (actually probably a repressing) about 8 months ago of a 2xLP Janis Joplin set. I had seen it before but found a really nice copy of a two album, gatefold album set that had the I Got 'Dem Ol' Kosmic Blues Again Mama and I believe Pearl albums in it. It sounded great and as I was going through my JJ/BBATHC LP's I realized I had bought and never opened one of the Sony/Legacy brand new copies of I Got 'Dem Ol' Kosmic Blues Again Mama. I didn't even remember getting it and I had not entered it into Discogs either. I'm still glad I bought the 2xLP repressing that had the two albums in it because it sounded so much better than the modern repressing and I believe remaster that Sony did. But at the same time, I kind of thought how much money am I wasting getting some of these if I'm not listening to them or going back and listening again? And it got me to thinking.
But I have come to the conclusion that if I have something I want or like, even if I listen to it once a decade, I don't really feel bad about it or feel like I need to listen to it more. I'll look at it as having the tools to listen to what I want to listen to when I feel like listening to it in my own mind anyway.
I enjoyed the video and I completely understand where you are coming from too! But in my own life, I look at it as I own the copy of the LP and it doesn't really own me. I guess the easier way to say it is that I don't feel like I have to listen to it at any certain intervals other than when I feel like it or think about it.
I've got a few LPs that I can't seem to find lately. That does bug me haha. I know that I have them, entered them in Discogs, and I've listened to them but I can't seem to locate them now. But I'm not too worried. I know they're here and I'll eventually be putting shelves in the house It will hopefully make my storage a lot easier to examine and look through than it currently is.
I hope you're having a great day and thanks for another interesting video...

Hi Brian! I was thinking on the fly without checking in on Trial By Fire. I knew it wasn't released here in the US. It's a shame it isn't on vinyl yet. I think it would make a great RSD release. ♥️🤗 Thank you and take care.

    Guilty as charged! Lol
Sure, they’re cool to look at on the shelves. Right now I’m playing every album in my collection. I’m enjoying hearing some gems the second time around.

I am guilty as well...I have tons more 45s then LP's but I did weed the 45 herd down by at least half last year. When I get a used record it always goes into my 'in the cue' pile unless it is something I have been hell bent on getting need to hear it now. Unless it's a new record I always play grade them and hopefully won't need to get an upgrade. I have had records that look horrible play great and vice versa...it's always a gamble...thus the hunt🙂
I get the streaming thing and so on but as others have said it's the artwork of the jackets and the warmth that vinyl has over any other format. Also if you for whatever reason have some glitch with streaming you and can't get where you want you get frustrated and the moment passes. Thus having the physical piece on hand to play whenever you want...the same holds true for DVD's as well.
A great video topic Melinda...I have a feeling there will be a boatload of comments on this topic as well. Thanks for the reminder to dig through the collection now and then. Take care🙂

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I am reminded of why I don't like streaming every time we go to visit our daughter. There are so many "drop offs" where there is no coverage. That never happens with a physical format. Take care. 😃♥️

Your "lost vinyl" seems to be something that afflicts all of us. Recently I've done a similar thing--I've gone through my collection and have found titles I don't even remember buying! Some were good. Others? Not so much. My list of titles I've *regretted* buying is another story though! 😁 I don't have the patience or time to enter my entire collection at Discogs so in the rare case I'm doing a record crawl, I often can't remember if I already have the record back home.
I haven't yet gotten the UHQR Pretzel Logic but I believe the Geffen remaster was also released around the same time. As I understand it, the Geffen is digitally sourced, but the source is the digital album that Bernie Grundman remastered concurrently with mastering the UHQR titles. If you remember, I have UHQRs of the first two and honestly, the difference between the UHQR Can't Buy a Thrill and the Geffen are slight--I'd say the Geffen gets me 95% of what the UHQR offers. I'm probably going to buy all of them, but, the nice thing is that I can always resell these and not lose much if I decide the Geffen versions are good enough for me. I will also eventually get the SACDs of these titles from Analogue Productions, so the UHQRs may only be living here temporarily.

I personally love the UHQR'S that I own. The box is so beautiful. I don't own any of the Steely Dan UHQR'S yet but I am considering Gaucho when it comes out. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
