Hugh Jackman may not have the best voice of everyone whose ever sung this song, but for someone who hasn't been studying vocal music his entire life, he sings it very well. More importantly, his acting is spot-on, something that many others with a great deal of experience with vocal performance failed to do.
The acting here is so precise it's just amazing.. Nothing is too much, everything comes organically. My favourite performance, next to Michael Ball and Alan Campbell, Jackman is just such a good character actor.
Hugh's rendition is great! To sing-speak is okay if you do it with style abd not over-do it. He seems to understand this and his interpretation is just flawless to me.
Here's my feeling, he didn't do the most vocally impressive version of this song, but nobody has acted it better than him. He got everything so right. Barowmen was fine but a little flamboyant for the character.
i must say that Hugh's voice and singing fit the character better. i actually enjoy his singing. you wouldn't expect a character like this to be soft spoken and meek.
Wow, a lot of people don't seem to like his voice. In my opinion Hugh Jackman has a fantastic singing voice - a very unique sound. Amazing in The Boy From Oz, will always have a soft spot for him in Oklahoma and yes, not as good as Colm Wilkinson but I think he did a fantastic job in Les Mis.
The vibrato at 2:46 is truly awesome. I cried when he hit the top note. I was just left in emotional turmoil. Keep up this truly inspiring rendition of a classic Mr. Jackman. I LOVE YOU x
How can this man's talent be measured, well it can't... he is the most mesmerizing, handsome, man in the theatre. I used to think I would give anything to see Shirley Bassey in Concert... now it's Hugh Jackman... can you just imagine. I can't, both women and men would be enthralled.
Even having Barrowman's version at the top of my list, Jackman is such a fantastic actor, that his performance seems natural enouth, and I actually enjoy watching it every time... Also, that's, to me, one of the most brilliant songs written, so....
He's fantastic. His voice is so rough and dangerous! Not the best or the most comfortable to listen to, but that's how it's supposed to be. And his acting is *perfect.* Excellent!
Maybe not the vocally polished version but his is the only version I've seen who actually seemed the understand the lyrics (his delivery of "dead right I've sold out", "I like the lady", and "I'm a writer", and the slight pause before "elegant solution" has convinced me that they should ALWAYS be done that way), and OMG he sure nailed that final note!
what i love about hugh is that he can also do light and fluffy, i think the training he had for oklahoma really enabled him to hone his talents (his oh what a beautiful morning is magic and he is incredible in the boy from oz)
Thank goodness there are so many different artists in the world! Barrowmen was great, Jackmans great. Different character choices, that shape the story in new ways. I can’t wait to hear some up and coming theater actor sing it, and show me new depths of the story.
They are all great! Michael ball has a powerful and sweet voice. Hugh Jackman has charisma and he sings very well. John Barrowman has talent and personality.
Barrowman has a better voice and he sings it very well, but Jackman sings it in a character, he's not just sining, he's performing and I always appreciate it more.
I must have watched this at least 30 times in the last day or so. I think the acting and vocals are perfect. Barrowman's version seems much too happy and cheerful. This version is great. Much more emotional than the others. Particularly "a rancid smell" and "I like the lady".
I like both of them and would like to see a "sing off" John Barrowman and Hugh Jackman. Both lads have done musicals such as Oklahoma! and wouldn't you want to go to a concert with both of these performers. I would. Throw in Danny Boys and you have a great trio!!
Can I remind jealous/negative commenters that Hugh Jackman not to long ago won the award for best male lead on Broadway in the last decade. As for how he got the Les Mis lead, Cameron Mackintosh the creator of the show said to Tom Hooper if you can't get Hugh Jackam as Val Jean please don't do the film. Mackintosh also asked Jackman in 1997 to take the lead in the West End but Hugh turned it down at the time.
Hugh is a fantastic singer! Barrowman owns this song in my oppionion, but Hugh just put hisown spin on this, so I would applaude and highly commend them both any day!
Hugh Jackman's performance of this song is the definitive. He may not have the smoothest and nicest voice, but who cares?! The acting is IMPECCABLE. The way he acted "And if I'm honest, I like the lady" is quintessential Joe Gillis.
I'm not having speaker problems. Every time I see Hugh Jackman in a Broadway musical, I have to wonder at how vast his talents are. From Wolverine to Curly in Oklahoma.....
Hugh sings this with much more passion than John B. I love this performance. You really get into the song. He draws you in with his passion and ability to really feel the song.
Well Barrowman makes this song into a cheesy showstopper by trying to show off his voice, whereas Jackman actually acts it and makes the sacrifice of sounding not as good as he could in order to retain the believability of the character. Jackman's performance is raw and realistic, I love it.
The only reason anybody gives kudos to Hugh is cuz he is damned deliciously good looking. He is not the greatest vocal trapeze artist but he compels watching with his manly strength which comes through always.
My best friend and I totally agree. We love both Jackman and Barrowman and in comparing their performances we found indeed that John sings it better but Hugh acts it better. I prefer Hugh, she prefers John overall, but it shows what two great performers can do with the same song and part. Good observations.
Fantastic. He really gets you into the song. He delivers it with so much passion. Hugh is so talented, it's beyond me. Where can I download this song? I love it.
Hugh Jackman would have been a perfect had this got round to being made as a movie. There is a tendency in recent years to cast Joe Gillies as a clean cut all American. But he isn’t that. he’s rough around the edges. Morally ambiguous, a little sleazy. William Holden played it perfectly and thats why Hugh and Kevin Anderson will always be the best at capturing Billy wilder’s Joe Gillies
I've seen both Hugh's and John's and I love Hugh's the most. My reason is, you can sound as preaty as you want, but it's the combination of acting and singing that realy sells me, speaking as a preformer. So after comparing the two I would much rather see Hugh Jackman play this part then John.
i love this version. Great singer/actor. Perfect for the role of joe Gilles, If they want to make een movie version of Sunset Boulevard, they must take Hugh Jackman
I agree with a lot of comments that this isn't as polished as say John Barrowman. And that makes sense, as for technically speaking his voice isn't as good as Barrowmans. But this version to me has more feeling to it. Of the two, I would pick this one.
I watched both John Barrowman and Michael Ball after this clip. And I have to say that Jackman is my favorite. He puts much more emotion into than the others. They are both good, Barrowman to be me better than Ball. But Jackman is by far better. Rather than just singing the words he feels them and shows those emotions in his voice. It is spectacular.
There's a documentary on youtube where there's a short clip of him performing this in the musical (this particular clip is from a tv program, I think) and in my opinion it's better. Cause he's moving around the stage, his singing's better.. when he's not just standing there singing into a mike, it makes a huge difference. Course, I didn't see this musical on stage and I imagine it's an entirely different experience than watching it on a computer.. for better or worse.
sunset boulevard is set to become a movie in 2009. no official actors to play the roles are announced, but they are considering glenn close, elaine paige, or barbara streisand for the role of norma desmond and ewan mcgregor or hugh jackman for the writer
Who melts when he smiles right into the camera and said, "Well, I'm a writer." Ahhhhh!!
yoyoeldas
my right ear love this
+Roy Zeraiah my left ear hates this
Hugh Jackman may not have the best voice of everyone whose ever sung this song, but for someone who hasn't been studying vocal music his entire life, he sings it very well. More importantly, his acting is spot-on, something that many others with a great deal of experience with vocal performance failed to do.
Hugh Jackman was singing this really good! What was movie land's gain was musical theatre's loss.
this is one of the most sincere, truthful renditions i've ever witnessed, of a broadway song. BRAVO hugh! :)
The acting here is so precise it's just amazing.. Nothing is too much, everything comes organically. My favourite performance, next to Michael Ball and Alan Campbell, Jackman is just such a good character actor.

True but he's not known widely for singing as much as he is acting but he's got an amazing voice and his acting in his singing is superb
i must say that Hugh's voice and singing fit the character better. i actually enjoy his singing. you wouldn't expect a character like this to be soft spoken and meek.
Definitely !
I agree he wasn't the one who sang it best, but he's definitely the one who acted and meant it the best
The DVD of Oklahoma is terrific - great singing and dancing from Hugh and the rest of the cast
This was done really well by Jackman...1996...now 15 yrs ago....Wow...how time flies.............
This performance is the epitome of being in the moment.
Every word is being done as if he's saying them for the first time. Brilliant.
Fantastic performance - he owns the role. Who cares if he has an edge to his tone - its musical theatre not opera- and it suits him and the number.
The vibrato at 2:46 is truly awesome. I cried when he hit the top note. I was just left in emotional turmoil. Keep up this truly inspiring rendition of a classic Mr. Jackman. I LOVE YOU x
He´s the perfect actor : acts, sings and dance........... I am his fan ! Greetings from Brazil.
Best version I've heard. He brought his acting ability to the song.
How can this man's talent be measured, well it can't... he is the most mesmerizing, handsome, man in the theatre. I used to think I would give anything to see Shirley Bassey in Concert... now it's Hugh Jackman... can you just imagine. I can't, both women and men would be enthralled.

The perfect man. He is amazing. I heard he never even had any singing lessons. That's just plain miraculous.
He's fantastic. His voice is so rough and dangerous! Not the best or the most comfortable to listen to, but that's how it's supposed to be. And his acting is *perfect.* Excellent!

I love his eye contact with the camera! So amazing, his voice is incredible, despite what most people seem to be saying.
His voice has gotten so much better
He has a good voice. He is not only a good actor, he's a good singer too!
His acting is superb! fantastic!
"is that really hugh jackman!!" (hears the vibrato) "aah yeah that's him"
That last note is absolutely amazing!!
Hugh is amazing !!!!!!!!!! BRAVO!!!!!
Hugh looks so young and sings just great! Thanks for sharing it.
Great job on this...he really looks the part and sells it for sure....
best performence of this song ever!!
Lo amo!!!
this is just fantastic
hugh is talented
what i love about hugh is that he can also do light and fluffy, i think the training he had for oklahoma really enabled him to hone his talents (his oh what a beautiful morning is magic and he is incredible in the boy from oz)
Thank goodness there are so many different artists in the world!

he is a really good singer!!!
Great performance by Hugh Jackman, gives the right feeling of this demanding song!
Barrowman has a better voice and he sings it very well, but Jackman sings it in a character, he's not just sining, he's performing and I always appreciate it more.
His voice is so amazing.....I love it, when he's singing....
I can't get enough of Hugh singing, its great
Love Hugh's intent in this song. Brilliant!
I love him so much!!!
OMG! Hugh is fantastic! He sings this so well. Props to Mr. Jackman.
Hugh Jackman ever the master of facial expressions!!!!!! :)
i love this version!!
he is simply amazing, so handsome, so talented, I love him.

One more reason to love Hugh Jackman.
This man is very amazing!

Woah you can definitely see that he's an actor. His acting is just great! His voice is also great of course :D
excellent performance!
Pure freaking talent, that's how.
He got the role as his acing is quite good, and his singing is good for someone who doesn't study music. He is better than most.
This is great! Thanks for uploading!! ^_^ He sings so amazingly...
I definitely prefer John Barrowman's cover, but I have no problem acknowledging that Hugh Jackman is one freakishly talented human. Dang.
Hugh Jackman's performance of this song is the definitive. He may not have the smoothest and nicest voice, but who cares?! The acting is IMPECCABLE.

This is brilliant! Can't wait to see his portrayal of Valjean in the upcoming film version of Les Miserables! :)
I'm actually surprised he did so good. I wasn't expecting it. He is sooo attractive too.
Well Barrowman makes this song into a cheesy showstopper by trying to show off his voice, whereas Jackman actually acts it and makes the sacrifice of sounding not as good as he could in order to retain the believability of the character. Jackman's performance is raw and realistic, I love it.
I think all who sing this song bring their own interpretations and all have their own merits.
The only reason anybody gives kudos to Hugh is cuz he is damned deliciously good looking. He is not the greatest vocal trapeze artist but he compels watching with his manly strength which comes through always.

Fantastic. He really gets you into the song. He delivers it with so much passion. Hugh is so talented, it's beyond me. Where can I download this song? I love it.
I love how he plays someone like Wolverine but then turns around and sings songs like this. XD
I love Hugh!
You can teach a person how to sing, but not how to act. I agree with you 110%.
What a voice!!Anoter talent about that handsome man X3!!!
I love this song

jee!!!! one of those multi-talented............
Didn't know he could sing! He's awesome! :D
My right ear enjoyed this. 😄❤️
Great well worth the 3 plus min of your time.

I tried this on three devices (my desktop, tablet, and phone) and none have audio for it for some reason.
sunset boulevard is set to become a movie in 2009. no official actors to play the roles are announced, but they are considering glenn close, elaine paige, or barbara streisand for the role of norma desmond and ewan mcgregor or hugh jackman for the writer
Man... i remember watching him in Sunset Boulevard in Melbourne 1996 too! I snuck in a tape recorder.. i've no idea what i did with the tapes!
I love hugh in Sunset Boulevard and I miss Hey Hey Its Saturday
Hugh Jackman have amazing voice
this song is cool I love the beat
i love him in AUSTRALIA!!!
Wow. Where did you find this--I love anything with Hugh Jackman singing
he's the best!! in any look
@DRDFOX I completely agree. Hugh is an actor who sings. I would rather watch him on stage anytime. John can sing your heart away.
Oh you brilliant thing, you. I love Liza in pretty much anything, and Hugh is phenomenal.
