  • The Kohima War Cemetery is a memorial dedicated to soldiers of the 2nd British Division of the Allied Forces who died in the Second World War at Kohima, the capital of the Indian state of Nagaland in April 1944. The cemetery, designed by British architect Colin St Clair Oakes, is located on Garrison Hill, where a decisive battle took place, forcing the Japanese army to retreat. It contains 1,420 Commonwealth burials from the Second World War and a memorial to 917 Hindu and Sikh soldiers who were cremated according to their faith. The Battle of Imphal and Kohima, fought in this region, was voted as “Britain’s Greatest Battle” by the British National Army Museum in 2013.
