When I first got the model D I was in heaven. I couldn't get it to work initially and tried different KB controllers, but got there after a while. My phone is now full of images of model D settings that I really love. Running this from a MPC X with MIDI and CV is mind blowing.
After half a lifetime of making and listening to music, there are *still* very few things that are as enjoyable to my ears as a simple 24dB filter sweep on a 3 oscillator Moog type synthesizer.
I just does it for me...

you just called the Minimoog mixer "basic" - them's fightin' words! It's like, the key to a major part of the sound of the instrument - the overdrive you can do into the filter, all that good stuff! :)

Great video. I'd love to see a series breakdown of more of your synths. I'd also like to hear your thoughts on what instruments fill what roles in your sound pallette. Perhaps a basic video on what types of sounds are needed for a basic song.

What you say about the limitations leading to more experimentation, especially with a clearly laid out synth like the D is so true. The other Behringer Analogues are equally as inspiring, I have the Crave and Wasp and this is definitely on my radar at some point.
That's why I have Reason 12 but still use version 4 most of the time.
The Model D is my favorite synth among many; I was pleasantly surprised to see that we knew the same tricks like using the mod CV out from the Keystep to automate the filter. There were a couple tricks in there I hadn’t thought of like manually playing with the tuning of an oscillator on a note-by-note basis during performance. Thank you for the video. Subscribed!
One tip for you - you mentioned you never use filter emphasis for basses… using just a bit of the filter emphasis essentially acts like a high pass filter to tighten up a bass patch. I’ve found it to help reduce muddiness especially when using the triangular waves.
Interesting comparison to an acoustic bass intonation via string length & how bassist plays each note. Your comments on tuning are super helpful. Great video.

One slight variation on the Ext In feedback is to connect a patch lead from MIX OUT to EXT IN. That feeds the mixer straight back into itself and really drives the filter hard. The stable range is reduced to 0-1, with increasing weirdness and self-oscillation beyond that. However it's a really nice, different type of distortion. More mid-rangey in fact, great for lead sounds.
I am with you bruv, I love the model D, so creative and great sounding synth. It was mine, as yours is 'go to bass', until I got Behringer MS-1/sh101:)

This is wonderful drone machine as well. You can patch +2.5v to +5v to lc gate and it will keep on droning and then sculpt the textures live by adusting the mix between oscs and add modulations and filter movement.
Great video, I have a D as well and whilst I didn't learn anything new (i know you weren't trying to teach us anything new but rather explain how you like to use it!:) ) it was nice to see it used in a different style. I felt like I was having a conversation about it, which is good. I know purists lament Behringer for cloning but it brings analogue synthesis to the masses which is a good thing. I also partner the D up with a Keeley Caverns V2 analog reverb/delay pedal which keeps that instant tweakability with the detuned/desynced character. Nice vid, subscribed :)
Great video, well done I’ve had an Original Mini Moog that I bought in 1978 brand new and currently they’re going for about $12,500 you can get the Behringer Model D for around $350 I’m ordering one as one more tool in my box. And yes you have to let them warm up and my original will drift some depending on ambient temperature. Again great video.
Great overview! Depending on your song/arrangement, one oscillator might be enough. So much character involved here as I experienced with the Poly-D version.

Little Tip, i replaced one knob from the oscillators and changed it for the cutoff, the big Knob is much better in dialing fine movements abd i think i heard someone who got the Original that this whas for him the main difference, the range of filtering you can reach with a big Knob^^

i have the same thing :) once played a moog one, nothing could give me that bass. The model D did exact the same bass i needed, i couldnt believe it but the diffrence was so small.. It is what it is and i love it

Very nice video, I own a Model D, but I use it far too seldom. I am often too lazy to use my outboard equipment. Your video definitely motivated me to integrate my Model D into my setup so that I could use it immediately 👍

With the advent of the modern DAW, you can keep an unlimited number of takes with your VCO synths. With the use of MIDI sequencing, you get identical performances. So you can take one pass straight, then spend as much time rolling through patch changes and performances. So you can comp together so many interesting changes between song sections to give any composition an interesting arrangement. Finallly, with low cost surface mounted assembly techniques and electronic component production on a global scale, every form of electronic instrument of the past is worthy of re-examination. I think Behringer saw the opportunity to build classic design en mass for a second go around and make their money in volume. It's close enough to a Mini to make a record with.
Actually if you look into the history of Bahringer, there main goal is to bring the most expensive or rare or legendary sythersizors to as low a cost as possible while allowing the user access to the same sound of the out of reach sythersizors.

Thanks Tefty! Have had my D for a year now. I bought it to go into a Eurorack system to provide that "Moog" sound when coupled with the 960 sequencer - and it delivers, no question! I have felt a bit guilty that I haven't explored its synthesis capabilities further, but I have plenty of other stuff for that... I agree with your idea about reaching for a synth for a "sound" characteristic - just like choosing a particular guitar - and I guess that's what I do with the D.

Your mpc+behringer synth connections etc have been really helpful. I have a neutron and mpc one, as well as other "budget" gear, and with my humble setup, I can create so many sounds. None are particularly good sounding, but that's just user-error. Having so many midi and cv connection possibilities just ends up causing me problems, because I think that "if the choice is there, why not use it!?". Your approach with a usb hub is the way to go. Hey Dillip 👋 Merry Christmas and happy holidays! I fall in that trap often, if I have it better use it 🤣 I think it’s ear training from a producer perspective. It took me years to hear what I actually wanted in me head, and even more years to refine the “mix” side of things. Music production is a life long journey ❤️
2:58 i just got this same model and i just got a regular mono stereo cord and found out that it works , and if you patch the “LC gate” to “LFO” then you can indeed sync up all tuning to oscillator 1 while also having the ability to tune oscillators 2 and 3 individually !! this is a dope video !!!!
I've been diving deep into software emulated synths and midi control, but even in that context? The sound I always gravitate towards for gnarly bass sounds is the always the sims of a Moog D.
So I think I'm just going to pull the chain and get one.

I have off-and-on been jonesing for a Poly D even though I don’t really have the room for another keyboard, but I don’t think I would want to replace my standard “D” with it even if I did. Such a useful and endearing synthesizer for $250. That Minimoog layout makes it so easy to tinker and it’s very gratifying to get something nice dialed in. Poly D is more versatile and has a lot bigger cool-factor but this thing is SO practical and efficient on space. I just have it sitting on top of my master keyboard underneath the second-tier keyboard where you can hardly see it. Throw it into a little reverb and you’ve got big sound with little effort.

Early on i found to put the main out into that overdrive jack. It makes it go mad in a good way. Sold it after a few months, great tool for starters.
I like the Hainbach hands-on approach to sequencers. The most complex one he uses is an SQ-1, because he can fiddle around with the knobs and just experiment. Just a thought.

I have one and I love it - 9/10ths “that” sound for less than 1/10th the price. While it of course doesn’t have real PWM, you can get a very similar sound by mixing oscillator 3 inverted saw with oscillator 2 regular sawtooth.
Sounds the same as the Aturia mini V and they both sound the same as a Mini Moog.
@@HOLLASOUNDS lol,no. Been using MiniV since 2004. It isn’t the same by any stretch. You can’t just compare an oscillator and call it a comparison. No software can produce that sound that never requires any fiddling in mixing. Only hardware does that and this one is as close to it as you get without getting the original.

There are really two minimoogs and this is a clone of the later (same as the reissues from Moog). So it doesn’t sound like a v1 oscillator because it is/was never trying to be a pre ‘76.

The model d was my first analog synth, and I certainly have a soft spot for it. It really forced me to learn sound design, and its layout really encouraged me to “play” the panel. It’s so much synth for so little money.
+1 mine is completely dedicated for bass. It sounds so good.
For my MIDI portable Organ setup, 2 M-Audio keyboards (37Key Upper, 49 Key Lower) and a Voce V-5. I've added other equipment to it including a Roland VP-03 (clone of VP330), an E-MU Piano Module (dated but I like the way the midi Channel selector and octave transfuser on the front Panel), Yamaha QY-70 & Reface CP (Electric Piano with Effects) and a Behringer Model D.
The QY-70 is (With the E-MU and CP) Playable on all unused MIDI channels and is (outside of key velocity) Non-Expressive and generally played on the Lower Manual.
The Behringer Model D is playing on the Upper Manual, along with the Roland VP-03 on the Lower Manual are Under Expression, but through a straight while the Organ goes through a Leslie.
I just ordered a Yamaha Reface YC (makes Combo Organ (Farfisa, Vox, Acetone and Yamaha Combo Organ Tones, in addition to Hammond Tones) and plan to play it through the Model D Filter input.
This will allow the Model D Filter to Augment the Reface YC signal with the V-5 Hammond Tones and later with the Upper Manual Hammond Tones.

I just ordered one of these because of this video. I also just ordered a Hydrasynth 49, and I wanted an analog synth that made decent bass to layer it with. I have a Minilogue XD, but the bass doesn't hit the way I want it to. This should work really well.

@infoslinger Thats the going price. How am I part of the problem? I didn't set the price. Original MINT 1974 Model D's are going for that much. From 6 to 15k depending on serial number, year and condition. Ours is like new and I'll take 8k for it if it's offered. What's your problem? I mean we paid close to that when we bought it 4 years ago.

Question for you: Do you use or prefer to use your MPC One/Live as a "DAW" to control and play your external hardware and record that way, or do you prefer to put midi notes down into the MPC and record those external synths as samples/loops into the MPC and sequence it that way instead?
Mix of both honestly. I’ve been experimenting more with audio tracks recently in the MPC as well. Gonna do a vid on the workflow soon’ish

@@SenseiJams personally i am more an « audio track man », than i come into sampling… and since i have my MPC Live i do both… mostly audio tracks, but it’s so easy to chop tracks, and an infinite way to create music differently (not sure of the spelling of everything, excuse my french lol)

You could boost your bass with filter emphasis, if you turn the filter to hi-pass mode. Then set cutoff to low frequency and resonate it with emphasis (low cutoff frequency will be amplified)
I’d like to hear more about your DAWless setup and what you’re doing to orchestrate multiple synths, I’m considering the MPC platform instead of Ableton for that exact reason (live performance, editing synth patches during performance, and minimizing dependencies).
I might get me a model D. I didn’t know modular synthesis was a great way to create music. Keep this kind of stuff coming.
the Model D is pure fun and cheaper than a simple repair job on any original moog - get one, you won't regret it.
Modular isn't a great way to make music. It's inefficient, confusing, and expensive. Which doesn't make it any less awesome.
I just got the Mini Moog Model D app on the iPad Pro and it has presets, fix etc, I am busy twiddling to get your sounds which are super $15 app so good to play around with
Ive had mine for a few years now and it is indeed a go to. I've since added a Sub37 to my setup and both get plenty of use, it is incredibly impressive that a sub $300 synth can hold up to one that sells for ~$1500. My Model D is pretty far out of tune (about a semitone and a half sharp) and required calibration but it does the job.
I probably need to calibrate mine at this point. I've just ignored the amount of tuning needed and set it to "A natural" when it's warmed up.
@@TeftyMeems I use the 3rd osc in "fifths mode" a lot for techno stuff which is great - but performing live with it I really needed to get it calibrated up so that visually i could "see" when its set to a fifth. over my IEM's in a dense mix I found that "finding" the 5th was a bit dodgy.

btw cost me like ~$280 *several* years ago _used_ on Ebay to get 'em. worth every penny of course, because it was the result of wayyyy too many hours of research (at the time) for my ideal pair

Nice video!! I’m curious to know how you have your Behringer Model D set up. I want to use mine with my MPC One and Triton Studio keyboard and later record live audio or stems into logic. Do you have a video on how you actually set it up? I don’t have a mixer but I usually sequence in my MPC one and export the audio stems to mix in Logic Pro

Am I right in thinking if I wanted to use both hands on the behringer D to toggle sounds, I could put sustain on max then the sound wouldn't change until I press another key? Allowing me to play with a continuous sound?
It seems a bit of an understatement to say ‘Moog-ish’… it’s the exact circuitry of the Mini Moog.
I also use it exclusively for bass, but more of that “Jam On It“ bass sound.

How did you set your keystep to control your synth as well as your mpc midi track? I 've tried to have a similar routing for my dawless setup, but I could'nt manage to control the midi track as well as the synth from the keystep. Thanks!
In case it is still relevant, my guess is that he daisy chained the devices, like Keystep -> MPC -> Model D (on the MPC when you're on a track which both receives and sends MIDI, it lets incoming MIDI notes pass through + forwards sequenced MIDI notes). At 15:12 you see the track settings on the MPC: It's a MIDI track, which I guess means that it receives incoming MIDI, and on the bottom left it says "MIDI PORT: Model D MIDI 1" which means that it sends incoming or sequenced MIDI to the MPC's MIDI out port connected to the Model D (obviously the MPC sends its MIDI via USB, since the Model D doesn't have a MIDI cable connected to it).
Another option, in case a certain device doesn't provide MIDI thru functionality, might be to use a MIDI thru box / MIDI splitter. That box would take the signal from the Keystep and forward it to all devices which are connected to the MIDI thru box. In which case one would setup the receiving devices to receive MIDI on separate MIDI channels, and choose the respective MIDI channel on the Keystep (Shift + keys 1-16). But in the video, the Model D receives MIDI from both the MPC and Keystep, so I'm pretty sure he used the above mentioned daisy chain configuration.
