  • Sylvie and I spent a week in Suffolk last summer. During that time we visited Southwold, which is our favourite seaside town in the county. We walked around the town and then along the seafront to Southwold Harbour, where we took the ferry across to Walberswick. When we returned to Southwold we spent a couple of hours on the pier.

Super video David. You really captured the charm of the place. The music added to the relaxed nature of the video. I don't usually like pier amusements, but the ones on Southwold Pier are unique and we had a hilarious half hour in there.

Injured my foot several months back and couldn't get out. Then winter stepped in. Waiting for the spring so that we can get back out.

This ludicrous film makes a positive hell on earth seem like an idyll! Go there in the summer (and much of the rest of the year) and you will not be able to move for the seething MASS of cars and people everywhere! I knew this place in the 1970s when it WAS delightful, but now it is RUINED
by the riff-raff and their flashy cars and second homes.

This was in September. But I agree, I've since heard that too many homes here are second homes which are only occupied occasionally. Sadly it's happening everywhere - and has to stop!

Yes, I miss some things that have now gone; the wonderful Bookthrift shop in which I spent many happy hours, now a W H Smith shop, the second hand book shop, the Blue Lighthouse restaurant, the lovely cafe at the entrance to the pier with tables and paintings on the walls (now just a place for the crowds to queue without seating). Nevertheless, Southwold is clean and peaceful and the awkward fact is that this is only because the outsiders with second homes bring in money in their 'white flight' from what our cities have become. It's a last remaining bit of what used to be, along with Aldeburgh which is also now too crowded.
