Turning off the Rear Emergency Braking & Rear Sonar on a Nissan

  • This video shows how to disable the rear Sonar and rear emergency braking on a Nissan with Safety Shield 360. This is a temporary measure which will turn back on the moment that you turn the vehicle off and then back on but it will allow you to put a hitch for a trailer or bike rack on the back without the vehicle stopping while in reverse and without squealing from the rear sonar while in reverse.

This is a safety feature. It will likely become standard on most vehicles. Nissan just happens to be ahead of most adding it. It is designed to avoid a collision with anything behind you, including a pedestrian or animal that may have walked out behind you. The video is there to help when you have a trailer or bike rack attached so you are still able to back up.

I just bought a 2022 Murano, had a hitch and bike rack installed today. Ran some errands and tried backing out of a parking spot and this feature (which I didn't know about) kicked in. I was having a tantrum because I couldn't figure out why I couldn't back up. There was nobody behind me and I thought I was running over something. Finally I said to heck with it and kept backing out all the while this horrible sound and jerking was going on. I hope I can disable this because it is horrible. I just want a car that goes forward and back...none of this fancy stuff. My 2011 Murano was so basic and I loved it. Thank you for doing this video...I'll go give it a try.

I was rear ended 2 days ago and the back of my car is completely totaled. As I wait for insurance to give me an estimate, I’ve been driving my car but since the parking sensors have been damaged, every time I reverse my own car gives me serious whiplash. Thank you so much for this video ♥️ Serious game changer

This is dangerous. Someone literally has the ability to keep you from moving your car simply by standing behind it. If your blocked from the front a car jacker simply has to throw a backpack or have a second person stand behind your car and your totally screwed. I get that it’s a safety feature but the problem of having to navigate to to settings menu and click a button is not something I want to do under stress. This could easily be a button like the traction control is….

Thanks for the useful video. I find that this feature cannot be turned off (without doing every time you start up the car) very annoying. Our driveway slopes up toward the house. Every time we back the car out, when it approaches the street (where the slope actually goes up a bit) this think slams on the breaks. I don't know if maybe our camera/sensors needs aligning or something. Is this something anyone else has experienced. At this point, I wouldn't recommend buy this car.

I’m not even in a garage and have nothing attached to the back of my Altima, but today it was snowing and when I went to put it in reverse, it randomly started beeping as though i was backing into something (there was literally nothing behind me) and then it randomly applied the brakes. This feature is pure dogshit. Even worse is that it can’t simply be disabled altogether without having to do so every time you get in. Oh, and I’ve had a light and error message almost every time I get in saying “front radar blocked/not available” since I’ve had the car… I got this vehicle brand new from a Nissan dealer last year. They really need to step up their game if they want to include such frustrating, barely functional and potentially dangerous “safety” features in their vehicles.

NHTSA has made this a requirement from 2021 forward, so good luck finding a new vehicle without it. The solution is the disable rear auto braking whenever a trailer is plugged in. Not sure if there is a way to do this with just a firmware update or not, but would be nice if automakers could do it. It seems like the transmission disengages when stopped, at a light, for example, then when you start to accelerate there seems to be a delay, then all of a sudden engages with a jump or jolt and this is taking it real EZ. Not sure of the correct word jump or jolt in gear. It's horrible and we are 2 hours away from the closest Nissan because we are on a travel assignment. The transmission is the weak link and I bet it only gets worse from here. Only 3500 miles. In the morning after we let it warm a bit, it takes off way too fast so we have to ride the break for a few minutes. Once it warms up for 15 minutes or so it seems to engage ok but there is sometimes still a slightly delayed engagement, just not as bad.
