Do you like McFarlane or Kenner DC Super Powers?

    • @AshleyWilbanks
      @AshleyWilbanks 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

For me it is the classic Super Powers line. While I applaud McFarlane’s attempt (and I do buy some), the scaling is all over the place and the attempt at c-clips for the capes are horrible, the cape material is horrible. I still don’t understand why they don’t try to scale everything the same across all of their lines.

      I hear that

      @impossiblepie 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I like both, I think mcfarlane is killing it with this line. The newer figures seem to be scaled better to original super powers, the cape material has gotten better but the clips still aren't great.

Only Kenner super powers I have is their spaceship the delta probe one. Its like one of the best toys ever.
But I got the Mcfarlane Darkseid so I could finally have a Darkseid to capture like in the commercial.
The vehicles in the mcfarlane line are kind of the best part. Especially the Blue beetle ship.

McFarlane went with pins for the knee joints because it was cheaper: producing the upper leg the same way Kenner did would have required a different line of production, different kinds of plastic for the upper and lower leg, for an instance, which would have made the figures more expensive to produce. It must be noted that McFarlane tried everything to keep the retail price low as possible, in fact, adjusted for inflation, the Kenner Super Powers were a bit more expensive than the new McFarlane ones (of course, Kenner figures had the action feature that bumps up the price quite a bit).
Even if Playmates remolds are from the riginal molds, I don't consider them authentic, for two reasons: first of all, there are differences in the paint applications; second, they were not around thirty years ago.

Because I'm in a lot of TMNT Groups online, I would like to educate on the fact that these recent TMNT Vintage reissues vary from figure to figure, regarding the "authenticity" that Bobby Vala is trying to convey.
While yes, a lot of them are re-using the old molds from the 80s and 90s, many of them have slight differences that may not be notieable to the average person, but they're apparent when you look closely.
Some figures have the wrong heads, like a Leonardo figure may simply have a Raphael head with a blue bandana.
Or some of them have everything perfectly recreated, but one of the arms or legs will be from another turtle... ergo, a Leo may have everything great, but randomly have a Mikey arm or a Donnie Leg... painted to match the rest of the figure, so it's not blatant, but the one amazing thing about the vintage TMNT Playmates figures, is how little they reused parts...
almost all figures had unique sculpts from arms to legs... etc, with only the torso's being the common thing that were re-used between the four brothers, but by and large the musculature, the posing of a foot or hand, would be slightly different from turtle to turtle, so Playmates mismatching arms to legs, is moreso them finding means to reproduce some of the original figures, even though they may have lost or damaged the original molds perhaps... so if they're missing an arm or leg to a specific release, they tend to just grab another brothers arm or leg and slap it on there with the matching paint applications to mirror the rest of the turtle and they hope most people won't notice... but super fans obviously do.
There's other more blatant examples, like the reissue of the TMNT 1990 live action Splinter, which originally had felt fur on the fitgure, but in the reissue was just painted orange fur that looked terrible.
And then there's some figures that are missing accessories compared to the original, or simply have the same accessories across all four brothers, where maybe the original releases had unique weapons/accessorizes from brother to brother...
And then some lines are missing one or more figures entirely because the mold was damaged, like they mentioned in the video with the walmart exclusive "Pizza Tossin" line, which release Leo, Raph and Mikey, but not Donnie, and when people reached out to Playmates, they were told that the original mold was damaged, so there were incapable ot completing the four brothers in the Pizza Tossin line, so we'd only get the three remaining brothers sadly.
So yea these reissues aren't simply "perfect recreations", there's many variables to them that range them from "Great Reissue" to "Terrible Reissue"... but reissues they are...
The only argument in this video that can't be debated is the fact that paint applications on modern figures, generally speaking, would be better than old... that's not to say that paint applications are better... lord knows a lot of details in the original sculpts go unpainted in a lot of these modern reissues, but the QUALITY of the paint is undeniably better and will likely last a lot longer before they start to dull and fade like the old ones... or grow that weird fuzzy plastic mold that sometimes pops up on really old sealed vintage figures... that issue will not likely plagues these reissues as soon as it did the vintage one's... so in the argument of paint quality, yes, today's paint is likely much better than the old...

You didn't focus on the Super Powers line. You talked mostly about the Turtles.
I think you should have covered the difference in the molds of the McFarlane figures... compared to the original Kenner-Styled figures.
That's the 'rub' that's going on with the new Super Powers line. The differences in the size and scale of figures in this line.
Now, ... McFarlane is giving us more of the Kenner-styled figures that go with the Original Kenner figures... which is Greatly appreciated.
The Detective Batman, the Black-suited Batman, the two Robins, Sinestro, Brainiacs, ... the Hal Jordan-Green Lantern... Blue Beetle....are in the Kenner style and scale.

Purpose of Putting new art is to refer to the Fans that followed/Liked that era of Batman etc. Super Powers is a specific look/style that is made for new and old collectors. In order to McFarlane to expand the line he will make varieties of the same character and come out with characters never made. This is one of the best process in expanding a line that was once limited on characters produced.

I wasn't alive for the release of the Kenner Super Powers line, so I have no attachment to it. Remakes of existing, long out of production figures are always nice, because then it means that a new generation can get something without paying crazy amounts. I think McFarlane just does modern looks for the Super Powers line as an attempt to attract younger customers who grew up with those looks.

If the new Super Powers had been able to do reissues of the original figures AND THEN supplement it with new characters to the line like your Brainiacs and Nightwings and things, that would have been a knockout (even despite my misgivings about paying $20+ CAD for crappy figures meant to be kept on card). But I loved Super Powers so much that when I saw Superman and Batman looking NOT RIGHT, I couldn't get behind the line. I've been tempted to recreate the Super Powers line-up using the Multiverse figures, but that's a BIG money pit that I've been resisting.

Something I have learned from having products made with steel molds overseas is that they do not really last 10+ years. They have to be kept and stored in a perfect environment and must be cleaned/oiled to even last that long. Steel rusts and can get remade all the time. Kenner remade tools because they actually got worn out from making tens of thousands of plastic parts over and over.

writing this while watching the video so addressing points as they appear sorry for the length
the equivalent to the 70s superfriends batman is what mcfarlane calls knightfall batman. it is a different one on the back of the box, at 11:33 you see it as number 12. the one you are showing is the hush version (number 3) its meant to be a completely different suit. its like showing keaton suit and saying its afflecks. two different costumes good tip is if you look at the barcodes it tells you what comic the figure is based on
older collectors might have the original superpowers but modern collectors like myself born in 1985 grew up with stuff like kenner batman the animated series so it is good to get refreshes of the iconic designs especially for those that rarely change their looks such as superman or barry allen
to use your vader comparison if you notice in the movies his suit changes between episode 3, rebels clone wars, new hope, empire and jedi . at superpowers scale/style using mostly the same body and just recolouring those differences don't really come across as much (you wont see the different button layout on the chest for example or the different brow on the helmet
for the authenticity query we can use gi joe as an example by itself. is swivel arm less authentic than straight arm? given they redone the entire line a year later, does a new articulation point mean those are separate lines entirely?
for details after molding paint can also play a huge factor there are people online that have customised the paint on the original Hasbro black series figures and the mold itself is fantastic but paint slop and lack of shading lost everything but modern reissues use the new digital printing process making most of hasbros headsculpts a lot clearer than before.
joe filecards have always been integrated into the play pattern. the pit used to have a secret place for them in the floor. however most other toylines the kids had to make their own folders or wallets etc unless it was trading cards where companies would sell special folders for them. i believe the hall of justice had something similar but don't quote me on that.
I agree the details accesories and play system with action force are fantastic as the great toy reviewer emgo316 says "its an option, and options ... are good!" never seen them in person however unfortunately one of the downfalls of glasgow geek shopping.
ive never been a fan of dynamic posing as It tends to warp figures, bad enough it happens with weapons and spears (my mattel thundercats lion-o sword was almost a circle) never mind figure that cant stand because of it
motu in the last few years have tried to redo powers of grayskull multiple times from classics to masterverse to origins so they are trying that scenario of finishing the figures that were unreleased or in limited quality. in fact theres a rumour they are redoing the dinosaurs and giants soon.
now we come to the end. it was a good video thanks to you both. all in all I think that personally im a different style of collector than both of you. I collect representaions of characters rather than the line itself. so for example if its media based I go main cast in primary deco > recurring characters > main cast in secondary costumes > favourite episodes > favourite characters > other media such as tie in books or games.
regardless of how we collect though, it takes all of us together to make a succesful line

A played toy, action figure. From whatever age you were, you pumped soul into that toy. Floppy joints, scuffed paint, that figure has soul. You can rebuy it and mess around with that at age 40 but I will keep the original from back in the forming years.

Really interesting video, but one comment I'd have in favor of SW Retro, Super Powers, etc. - if the original molds don't physically exist, then you have no choice but to do what you can. Sure, maybe some of these figures are not perfect, but I really like the various retro offerings, I'm glad they exist.

I think that the goal of the DC Super Powers or other range of new retro figurines is to create Neoretro as we have seen with cars like the Mustang or Camaro. There was no sense these days to bring out 2 ton square cars again when in the 90s they had evolved towards a modern and aerodynamic appearance. So since then we have found ourselves with modern technologies in cars with obsolete bodies. It's the same with superheroes. In 2011, the New52 wanted to modernize Superman and other DC characters but the public did not accept and the return of Superman in briefs with modern stories had to come back. In the cinema Zack Snyder wanted to give a new, darker and more realistic interpretation of Superman and this was also rejected by the public who preferred the era of Christopher Reeve. So Gunn will release a new Superman in 2025 with a retro look mixed into a current blockbuster film. It is therefore for comics and figurines as for Muscle cars, an era of Neoretro. Modern characters in retro packaging and it's not for nothing that the figurines from James Gunn's Superman film will be published in the DC Super Powers range.

I was born in 88 so my childhood toys were terminator. Now the reissues of the turtles i really like. The best thing about reissues is people who can’t afford to pay 100 to 200 dollars for the old figures can pick these up and enjoy them but I get what you’re saying, modern art on vintage reissues kinda sucks if you’re collecting them.

I believe, Todd wants to "renew" or expand Super Powers line with modern characters design. The Batman Jim Lee has no circle on his chest, same as the picture. He wants older customers who used to collect Kenner Super Power to buy more cause of the modern design. And he wants younger customers who consider modern design as the definitive design to jump into the line too. It doesnt mean that Todd has to copy Kenner Super Power line older design only. I think, it is reasonable marketing decision.
