"I've been in 50 professional tournaments. But could you stop doing a perfectly legal move and give me a ball that I can hit easily to win a point in this competition for money? And please, please, please don't target me either. OK?
Leigh: Don't use an effective strategy against me! I don't want to have to make any adjustments. Hit the ball right to me. The unsportmanship came from Leigh by trying to verbally intimidate her opponents.
You don't need to hit a lob out of the air, if the sun is shining at you let it bounce then hit a drop shot back

When I started playing pickleball, I was advised (they were genuinely being nice) by the opposite team to always be close to the net because lobs are ineffective in pickleball, however I have always used lobs in tennis so I lobbed them a lot in that match and they lost.
Agreed. What I have found is that it's the people that don't like to chase down lobs due to their physical limitations. Definitely a time and place for lobs.
It's like beating your grandfather in tennis with drop shots... just don't do it. So cool that you can lob someone who can't change direction and is just trying to get some exercise in or have fun. The purpose of sport is to have fun and appreciate the competition not dumpster Arleen who can't change direction because she had 2 hip replacements and is just getting back to being active.
Some of the poorest advice I've been given by advanced players: don't lob, commit to the kitchen, and just dink the ball. I also play tennis, so I can not just commit to one position such as the kitchen; i run all over the court. And I can't just dink because there are top spin, slices, and lob shots to be had. I agree that lobs should not be used on advanced players, but I'm just starting out, and the players i play with are not advanced. Lobs are so effective. Waters was trained as a tennis player, so she should know that.
@@chefwannabe1 As you play more advanced players, they dink so much and so well that it is very difficult to play those spins, slices and lobs. Hence the advice to commit to the kitchen. It works well with advanced players.
I played tennis in HS so am pretty good with lobs. Played some pickup games at a local spot and one dude was squawking about lobs after we won. He was young and could move, no sun involved, he just didn't like them. It's just a shot like any other, and if it works you use it. In a tournament like these ladies are playing, you use what is effective. And if you get in their head, you amp it up.
Basically their complaint is "don't keep using a shot that I can't return. 😂😂😂 I'd just tell them it's a legal shot like any other, so, deal with it!
hahahaha I played a game when i was at school that means absolutely nothing, everyone played games as school kids and you're trying to flex about it, clearly lacking in life
Seems that would just bring more lobs, but that’s just me.
I’d keep lobbing now that I know you hate it.
@@longtimelo if someone is throwing a fit about a particular thing you are doing. They aren’t in the right mind. So keep it up.
@@longtimelo It's not your opponents job to give you an easy time. If it's a competitive game then they should be trying to win, and attacking any weaknesses that you might have in your game.
It’s easily the stupidest complaint in pickleball. The absolute only reason to NOT use the lob, is playing against a mobility challenged player. I won’t lob it then, because I don’t want them to fall backwards. Everyone else, however, it’s lob on!!!
As a mobility challenged player, it insults me when people don't play lobs. Those are called pity points. Nothing to fell pious about.
@@robertdrake48 I understand your feelings. However, when playing with friends, I don’t want to be the reason they get hurt. Tournament, or bragging rights, everything is fair game…including a drive serve at the non receiving partner. Man I love getting a point on that!!!
@@rraymond2007 Seriously, f*+# you for not lobbing against a "mobility challenged player". You goal is to win and you have to exploit your opponent's weaknesses. It's like playing boxing and avoiding body shots because your opponent decided to challenge you with a broken rib. You shouldn't care.
@@hus390 if I needed to use the shot to win, I would. I was merely stating that I won’t use it if I think it could hurt my opponent (whom is also my friend) and I don’t need it to win. I’m guessing I would be happy to lob against you all day…even in the bright sun.
Anna Leigh Waters shows a lot of maturity in sports for her age. Good job Dad 😂
@@JT-wu2if No bro. The mom is Leigh Waters and she was the one griping. The daughter, Anna Leigh, did not complain. So learn before you pop off.

In pickleball's embrace, the lob I adore,
An underrated gem, it often does more.

A shot of finesse, reaching for the sky,
Oh, how the lobs can make rivals sigh.
Underrated heroes, they shine in the court,

I bet Anna Leigh was mortified. Parents are embarrassing enough when you are a teenager but when your Mom makes a scene - oy!
ALW like “dad you deal with this hot mess, I can’t even.”
If they’re the best women’s doubles team in the world, they should have no problem letting a lob drop, then hitting a winner, or a good drop..
It doesn't matter how good you are, it's going to be difficult to return a lob if it's right in the sun. You'll get blinded.
@@CyberSonic157 so? it's no use complaining, just get used to it and don't get upset.
Great strategy from the other team, once your opponent starts to lose their composure like Waters did, keep doing it….. that’s called getting the mental edge against your opponent….Good Coaches will teach that strategy of finding your opponents weakness and exploit it and if you can get them to lose their cool, you got them right where you want them!!!! This lobbing tactic is clearly not fair to her. I'm sure this has triggered some PTSD moment from her past memory. Some type of shade system should be constructed to help her through this or they should agree to stop keeping score. Don't they understand that by one team winning, one team has to lose? They are holding an event that will end with two people loosing. Tell me, how is she supposed to deal with that?
Poor baby. Where’s a pacifier when you need one. LOL
Outside the kitchen the court is 15 feet. You see them lobbying you back up and let the ball bounce. I don’t like in social rec play people do that. So we will switch at six and I’ll do it right back to you
It’s one thing to be mad that you missed a shot, but mad at the opponent for lobbing ??
Does anyone know Exactly what was said i know the response but what did she say?
The song when they were walking off court 👌🏽
Sunglasses exist 💀
Literally have never heard of a pro tennis player complain about a player lobing because the sun was in their eyes 💀
Complain if the court was made east to west instead of north to south if you want. But that's the only thing you should should complain about.
Baseball caps and golf visors exist as well. Having to look into the sun to find a small ball is a well-known problem in baseball and golf so they have invested literally centuries-old solutions for it
Ehhhh someone else actually knowing how to design courts. It looks like the courts are not facing the right way - if you look at the shadows, they are almost 180 degrees from the way ALW is facing which is a sign the courts are facing E/W instead of N/S.
This is literally the same complaint as if a team dinked so well and so often. It's a tournament, if you show an obvious weakness, they will exploit it. You would do the exact same
I think the lob is very under rated and will become more and more a part of the game.
Says nobody who plays at the competitive level. Lobs work vs the mobility impaired and that's about it. Lobbing someone who is mobility impaired is very much frowned on so don't do it.
@@300andDeadStraight Calm down there Pickleball keyboard ⌨️ Warrior! Lobs are really effective at any level.
@@Jimboslice1776 100% mad because of the sun. I'm just saying that lobs are not used at the highest level of play that often. It's risky and often ends in the ball getting smashed at your feet.
Edit: The bit about mobility issues was added because I see the lob used way too much when seniors play and it is frowned upon by the more veteran players.
@@300andDeadStraight I would disagree with that notion; the lob is becoming an important tool in the arsenal of a lot of pros. AJ Koller and Matt Wright, for example, use the lob a lot as a means to change the pace and surprise their opponents. The lob in general is being used more and more when compared to its usage in years prior as well as a means to take pace off of the ball and to give you a chance to recover as well. I fully expect most pros to learn how to lob effectively in the coming years
@@americanodude Watch a men's double match and tell me how many times they lob (of the 200 + shots in a given set you might have 5 lobs). Key word - MIGHT. The lob is effective as a surprise and will therefore be less and less effective the more it is used by definition. If you need to hit a recovery, the key is to maximize the margins to ensure you don't immediately lose the point. Lobs have very little margin so yeah that statement just doesn't hold.
Edit: Pros already know how to lob effectively - maybe once per set.
Reminds me of kids I’d beat in HS/college who got mad at me for hitting a drop shot winner.
You gonna be mad at the WAY I beat you?
Lmao
I absolutely hate lob shots....cause no matter how much i try/practice them i just cant figure it out...its a much more difficult shot to hit correctly than people think...
Run to get in front of the ball, let it bounce, wait for it to come down around waist height and then hit it like any other shot.
And if you use your finger to point at the ball until you hit it, you’ll have better focus as to where the ball is 🤓😎
I couldn't decide to go watch this or go to a cup stacking tournament, so I stayed home and played lawn darts.
So is running out the clock in football unethical? Using the full shot clock in a basketball game or stalling if there's not one in use unethical? How about targeting a poor free throw shooter in order to get possession of the ball when you are behind? How about penalizing players who whine about opponents playing within the rules? That sounds more reasonable to me!
Who won the match?
Ohhh…at first I thought she was just being a cry baby, but the opposing team kept hitting high to blind the other player with the sun…hmm…yeah, I would be pissed too
Who is recording this there are basically the families of the 4 participants in the stands lol
The strategy should have changed to Anna will take all the lobs. She can definitely cover the court.
@World Viewer this isn't tennis, don't think you are a pickleball pro. If her mom had the problem seeing the ball, the daughter could retrieve the lob. As a tennis pro you already know a pickleball court is much smaller, and you are already standing at least 7 feet from the net. This leaves 15 more feet from the "kitchen" to the baseline. Anna is the top woman's singles player, she can definitely chase down some lobs for her mom. Getting mad and cursing out your opponents for using lobs is out of line. This isn't the Patrick McEnroe vs Jimmy Connors days.
@World Viewer watch carefully Grasshopper. She can't return the lob because the sun was in her eyes. That's why see was failing. The sun.
Sorry, but the current rules are making Pickleball a game and not a sport. The rules need to be changed!
How does it feel losing?
What tournament was this and how can I watch it in its entirety?
The Waters won this match and went on to win the Gold Medal. Urging the crowd to support their lobs into the sun and taunting Leigh was low-rent garbage.

If I ever watch pickleball I know who to root against now.
Just let it bounce if you can't see it in the sun.
Can't cut it in tennis so you play the lazy mans version.
For anyone wondering, the Waters ended up winning the third game and eventually the entire championship. So much for karma.
Who really cares? Whe fun here is that she made a complete fool out of herself, what was her name again, Karen Waters?
In outdoor Sports you use the elements to your advantage hopefully. ( ;;
Would love to see (and hear) trash talk in pickleball and tennis
what was happening is the sun was blinding in the direction of the lob so you couldn't see. it had nothing to do with her missing the ball.
Ah yes, these guys are so skill that they can manage to perfectly whiff the ball every single time.
Leigh - seriously? Great shot - lob under used.
pickleball fights? ive seen it all.
If she really couldn’t see it let it come down for a bounce no? New to pickle ball and I know the balls don’t bounce terribly high but I gotta believe it’ll bounce enough to justify avoiding the sun
This is hilarious! How can she take this sport seriously enough to have a meltdown?
So entertaining! Thank you for posting this video. Keep them coming.
She just showed the other team her weakness tho.
“Don’t lob me into the sun!” Hahahahah peckerball. Try tennis honey.
This would have been like Barry Bonds b-thching about Greg Maddux throwing him curve balls.
Quit giving them balls to lob if you can’t hit overheads.
i play with a certain opponent, and every serve is a lob. every return, he tries to spin it, which ends up in the net. it's like a laundry mat. 'lob & spin'. it's no fun.
I think she wants to see the manager.
Put a couple of lobs away instead of whiffing and that will cut down on the number of lobs you see, I guarantee it LOL . . .
The lob has its place, especially in tournament play. If it works, do it until it stops working. At rec play you see it from a lot of lower skilled players about every third time they touch the ball. Whenever i play pickleball i want to improve my game. However, chasing lobs is really a waste of time, unless that is where you need to practice. Id much rather have someone who can play ball attack my backhand side with a nasty 3rd shot drive or drop.
Can't handle a lob ? Good thing your in pickleball and not tennis because I can't imagine how she would handle a moon ball. What a joke.
Dude, I agree.
And a lot of these comments are saying it's a dirty move to lob into the sun.
I'm sure it's also dirty to use the wind to your advantage.
People who play outdoor sports enjoy pain, suffering, and randomness. Don’t like playing a smash blinded by the sun? Try playing a 5 set grand slam match in July.
This is why I have stayed with tennis. The lob is respected. Pickleball has people thinking they are great athletes. Tennis would destroy them.
Pickle ball allows for more people to be on a common level with more advantages thrown out.
As a semi-pro tennis player I used to think the same way
" I'll wipe the court with these quote: Athletes "
Until a semi-pro pickleball player proved me wrong
And served me a generous dose of humble pie
Highly recommend you try some, though it's not so delicious
Its hard to have fun in the sun !
I don't know if they still play together but you have to feel for the daughter. Any match of theirs I've seen her mom is just giving away easy points over and over again. Hopefully she has found a more skilled partner.
Just wait till it bounces???
It's not that simple. If you can't see it, you can't track it and if you can't track it you won't know until the last minute where it is going to bounce.
If you even catch a glimpse of the sun you will see spots for a few minutes, not the ball.
You have two options
Track the trajectory as much as you can without being blinded by the sun and guess where it is going to bounce.
Block the sun with your cap in one hand but that is harder to do without being blinded than it sounds.
One of my university professors was an Navy ACE in WW2.
A common tactic on both sides (when you see your enemy first) was to maneuver so as to fly toward your enemy with the sun at your back.
When scanning the sky for enemy aircraft, fighter pilots would close one eye and block the son with their thumb. If they saw wingtips sticking out on the side of their thumb they were about to be shot if they didn't react immediately.
Look at the shadows... she was complaining because they were lobbing the ball into the sun 🌞. She wasn't complaining about simple lobs...
Is there a rule that says you can't lob the ball on one side of the court if your opponents can't see because of the sun? I play tennis and this strategy is used all the time, never heard anyone complain about it in 30 years of playing.
It’s about sportsmanship. It also tends to reflect a lack of skill or confidence in one’s ability to win without resorting to such tactics.
I play tennis. Dabbled in badminton. Can't stand badminton player's egos. Since badminton is easy to learn everyone thinks they're better than everyone else hence the egos. I foresee the same attitude is prevalent in pickleball. Tennis will teach u humility coz it takes a half year before u learn to play on court.
I can't stand tennis players ego, they always like to gatekeep other racket sports for no reason. In short, tennis is the most land wasting sport right after golf.

This goes to show how pickle ball is not a sport for sports people. It is a recreational activity to get exercise. There is not one sports person in the world that would agree with this brat. The fact that you bring up your weakness mid game. I would do it all the more. Imagine if a tennis player said out loudly. Don't serve to back backhand. Or a MMA fighter say my left arm has muscle spasm don't hit me there.
Why are there no time out muffins prepared and ready to go?!
Are there technicals or unsportsmanlike offenses in pickleball? Waters needed to be "t'd up" for her actions.
It may be fair play but, IMO, kinda dirty, esp. when the sun is clearly in the Waters' faces and at the opponents backs. In any case, though, as a pro you should be able to adjust to whatever the opponent throws at you, as long as it's fair. No excuses. I wonder if she threw some lobs back at them the next game...
Visor and glasses on 😂
When I used to play competitive tennis I used to hate playing dinkers that would always drop shot and lob
I too hated the dinks. But I respected the good lobs - forced my game and mobility to improve.
In Pickleball, dinking is a really important skill. The “kitchen” is where so much happens and great dinks define much of the play there.
Superb finesse/touch needed, as the Pickleball paddle and ball don’t generate as much spin as is typical with Tennis racquets/ballsgear.

Pickleball won't be taken seriously until they get rid of these "Senior Center" rules. If a player wants to yell at himself, let him. If a player wants to break her paddle let her. Lob all day. Drill the opponent 18 times. hit every single ball at the weakest player. It works for Tennis, NFL, MLB etc. It's a competition not a birthday party.
