The most effective HP-per-dollar spent muffler is a turbocharger. Like he said, engine mods makes a big different, bigger cams, more flow and even a lightweight flywheel can give it that racecar feeling. Light flywheel means quick free revving, quick free rev is an indicator of racecar.
Would FM consider making a Hushomatic with center exhaust instead of to the side? I like the butterfly valve and less restriction throughout, but I was hoping to get the exhaust tips under the license plate for symmetry Thanks for the video! Felt like I learned a lot =D
We did do that on our ND V8 conversions but you need a different rear valance and it's in the way of a trailer hitch, if that's your thing. @supergoat94 Unfortunately, we don't have any dyno charts that show the horsepower gains from those parts specifically on an ND1 Miata, but the gains should be pretty similar.

For the NA/NB stage 1 turbo kit, you recommend not going bigger than a 2.25" exhaust because too much free flow can overwhelm the internal wastegate and cause overboost. What are your thoughts on pairing the 2.5" downpipe with a 2.25" midpipe then a 2.5" muffler? Would that midpipe mitigate boost creep? Or is it significantly important to keep exhaust diameter consistent?
This won't be a "one size fits all" answer for everybody. Since we're at high elevation where air is thinner, we can usually run a 2.5" exhaust on our Stage 1 turbo kit and be fine. Folks at sea level may not be so fortunate. 2.25" should be safe anywhere. If you go any larger in diameter anywhere in your exhaust system, just be sure to keep a close eye on your AFRs so they don't go too lean.
I think it really depends on the design of each header type. You can have a 4-1 header perform worse than a factory header if the primaries are small and/or restrictive. Keep in mind, we're typically comparing vary small margins within the two types but the 4-1 header typically has a better top end than the tri-Y.
got an ND3 recently, I'm lookin at the hush-o-matic, but I'm trying to figure out the active functionality. With the CAN integration, does it override the vacuum line functionality, i.e. do people do one over the other, or do they work in tandem? I love the vacuum line functionality, but I want to be able to turn it off for the commute and put it at WO for the canyons. Thank you! Awesome video and really cool products! P.S. nd3 turbo kit, Cali legal?
@AcoAegis We're not quite sure what you're asking here, could you clarify? The CAN control allows you to set the muffler to quiet mode or race mode on the fly, with a few settings in between. In the event that we are able to create an ND3 turbo kit, it would be 50 state legal - we're not interested in selling turbo kits that aren't emissions compliant.
@@FlyinMiataVideo Awesome, thank you! Sorry for the confusion, I might just not be understanding this right. The muffler valve can be hooked up to the engine's vacuum line right? Can you still have that and run the CAN control also, or is it one or the other type thing?

Will FM make NB 3” downpipes and exhaust again? I was talked out of ordering the full 3” 10+ years ago when ordering my turbo kit and now want to bump up the power again.
In watching different Miata videos, I have heard the " thing" in the center of the NC-1 mid pipe called a cat and also a resonator. Can you enlighten me as to what it really is? I am considering removing it as I have catted high flow headers with a Magna Flow muffler, stock mid and am nick-ling and dime-ing my way 1 horsepower at a time to the best I can get naturally aspirated. I have HP internals to go with it. The dyno stats for the hushomatic do show a difference between just the muffler and the muffler with the mid pipe so I will probably go with that if I can reasonably expect a couple extra HP from adding that to the mix. As usual, a good presentation Keith.
I'm gonna say.....both! The first swollen area is the cat and the one closer to the muffler is a resonator. They're both in the midpipe but you're primary cat is integrated in the downpipe/header.

I'd like to achieve a small increase in exhaust sound, and was previously thinking about the Super-Q with the Helmholtz midpipe, but after making the decision to get your turbo kit for it, and remembering that a turbo does muffle the sound a bit, I figured I should see just how much quieter it gets before deciding between the Super-Q and Roadster Sport II. I bought a muffler for my NB and the prior owner welded the midpipe so now i get to do cat/midpipe as well. Any chance you know if the FM 2.25" midpipe is compatible with the Roadster Sport 3 muffler?
@jpjipperwong We haven't tested the fitment of our midpipe with the Roadster Sport mufflers, but if they will work with the stock midpipe, there's a decent chance that they would mate up with our midpipe too.
We're probably biased, but we're big fans of our ND exhaust and Hush O Matic exhaust. We think they sound pretty good and we found a pretty substantial power bump on the 2019 and up NDs (16whp over stock!). You can find both of those units, here: flyinmiata.com/collections/nd-powertrain-exhaust
What should I consider , look for, and expect in a muffler if I expect to do the NC Turbo when it’s available? Are there gains to be found there or words of caution before jumping in now? Should I wait to consider a muffler until after the turbo is on?
Turbos act as mufflers, so any muffler you put on now will be quieter once the turbo is installed. Or, if it's the right volume with the turbo, it'll be too loud now. Turbos are also sensitive to exhaust back pressure, so you'll want a low restriction unit. Most "turbo" exhausts (ones designed for turbo cars and not just a marketing name slapped on an exhaust) will be too loud on a naturally aspirated car.
How dare you not having that wonderful exhaust yet for the NA 😢 and how dare you for making something that I’ll have no other choice but to buy because of that butterfly system 😢 However, as you mention, I think first I’ll change the header to see how the sound changes, and then work from there.
How well would you say the Hush-O-Matic would work if someone went against your advise and changed the header anyway? Would that be to much in terms of sound of would trowing in a midpipe as well still be okay for someone who likes quite loud?
Since the Hush-o-matic is active, it's an even better reason to use it on an exhaust with a header. Keith's statement was focused on the fact that running an aftermarket header will likely increase the decibels to a level that some might not like.
I have the Hooker BlackHeart axle-back exhaust and the Versatune tune on my 2016 ND Miata. Wondering if your mid-pipe would work ok with it? (since Hooker discontinued the BlackHeart exhaust for Miata) would it make it too loud? Should I do header and mid-pipe?
We haven't tested that header so, I'm not sure if it'd be too loud our not. Our free-flowing midpipe will increase the decibels slightly but not as much as a typical aftermarket header install.
As you say, you don't need to retune the car when you change the exhaust. But, when the change in exhaust increases horsepower, does it have a noticeable effect on fuel comsumption?
The change in fuel consumption at wide open throttle will be related to the change in power available. At cruise, you may actually get an improvement in fuel consumption due to improved efficiency.
If I want to put a flat bottom on my car for aero or protection from rocks in a rally, do I need to leave the exhaust exposed for heat? Are there any materials I should avoid for this?
You need to cooling air flow if you enclose it, check out Julien Edgar content I dont think exposed exhaust impacts much with a proper undertray build.
@faenarae Without knowing any details about your setup, it's pretty tough to say. The best way to find this out would be to set up a temperature probe near the exhaust system in a few places to see how hot it is actually getting during your races, and then designing a flat bottom piece the will withstand that heat. To know what materials to avoid, you'll need to know how hot different areas near the exhaust under the car actually get - then you'll need to find a material that can withstand more heat than that.
