- This video is tech refresh of earlier tutorial on how how install DSM 7 on your PC. In this video I'll show you how to install Synology DSM 7.2 on PC without any command line interface. Its all GUI based where we will be using ARC Loader which will fake our PC into RS4021xs+ hardware. This improved version of loader which also support custom addons an updates.

Thank you for teaching us how to do this. For myself, I want to learn how to use Synology because (at work) they have some NASes that are Synology. And, I want to move jobs and make more than $11.50/hour. Thus, it's great that you are showing how to do this on normal PC hardware.

yeh and even they have addon to it as well. But I still can't trust it with critical data on it. It good to play around and for some some projects etc

I have been on this loader for quite a while now. Developer is very active and loader it self seems to be very stable.

You don't have to run this from a USB stick - I did it with an NVMe drive, although I used a USB NVMe caddy to initially install it on to the drive with Rufus, then slotted the drive into a m.2 slot on the motherboard and booted from there. Obviously, this will deny you a slot for SSD caching but I installed this on an all SSD system.

Yes this is a good tweek. A slow USB used for booting is a problem. A img file burned on a fast NVME or small SSD is a good solution.
But is a good security key. You boot and then extract USB. If someone stole you miniPC(NAS) on the next boot it will have a suprise. If you use encription it will have no way to reinstall from a new ARC usb
@@dim8097 If someone stole my NAS, they get a NAS with encrypted drives - my data is safe. That's what backups are for.

Will this migrate 6.0+ systems or would it be best to backup data off site then load it up after the new install is complete. Also will it erase the current setup or is that something I need to do? Thanks for this great walk thru!
Well, its tricky, I did test it a while back from DSM6 to DSM7 whiteout any critical data on my disks and apparently it worked without any data loss. But I will not recommend doing it if you have critical data on old DSM. To be honest I have been telling in my videos to not use it in production and for your critical data storage unless you have a failproof backup plan.
Thank you so much for the detailed explanation, and as an FYI, i have been using my xepeonology nas for over ten years without issue. I'm upgrading simply because I want to take advantage of some of the new features of version seven. I like the versitility of the software, and I cannot afford their hardware. Once I was able to get v6 up, it never went down. So thanks again for your video! And I do have backups 😊

Actually you can follow exact same steps on a new usb and to update loader, that what I have been doing without any issues, select the same DSM model, system will detect already installed DSM on your hard drives and all you data will stay intact.

Everything works ok but when I find Synology, says NAS have not a enable storage... My HDD was format with Linux and Arc Load too but I cant get works
Do you see your hdd in DSM?
Hdd is avaible in Linux, and ARC, but not after boot is created from Find.synology

If you are seeing the IP address then thats it, you need to access DSM using the IP and Port number on the screen.

Because thats fakes your PC into synology hardware for DSM to boot.

No you can’t, the only OS in your PC as NAS will be DSM7.

Very nice video. I have recently installed another Synology and I am using it. However, no matter what I choose with 8 disks, I can run a maximum of 4 disks in the system. I wonder if I can run 8 or more disks at the same time in this system.

Ho sorry, I haven’t tested it myself with SSD to be honest I dont see any value in utilizing dedicated SSD for this when my usb stick can do the same.
So I'm building my nas and want to know where these files are installed? Should I install a 128gb SSD for the installation and after that load in my storage drives????
I personally use the usb stick for loader files and leave all the SSDs for my data storage.
Does Surveillance Station work and can access cameras via mobile like in genuine Syn NAS? Only 2 camera license limit here as well? Can we hook up more cameras?

What are the minimum requirements for the PC to use Synology - CPU, RAM, system harddrive and data harddrives?
It all depends on your applications, DSM is optimized to run on very low hardware specs. If you are not going to use it for VMs or media transcoding etc then an old PC with 4G Ram should be more than enough.

How do you choose the model, what criteria do you use to determine the model? CPU is easy, next number of bays?
Just like nikolaradovic1726 I try to run it on an old laptop.
To be honest, I try to pick the model which has the hardware as close as possible to my own. Of course it doesn't need to be exactly same but in my experience this increases chances of successful and reliable build.
For Example I am using it on my HP Z800 machine which has Intel Xeon and I have 64GBs of RAM installed. So I picked XS4021xs+ which is also Intel Xeon and does support up to 64GB of RAM. For Hard drives I always use WD Red Pros and never had any combability issues so far (Even though these drives are not in Synology's combability list for most newer models).
Great Tuto works perfectly exept for Active Backup for Business the Authentication Failed how can I fix that ?
Some app like Active Backup for Business and quick connect needs you to link your Synology Account what means you'll need to have a real Synology Hardware or S/N for this to work.

Will be the HDDs able to physically migrated/moved between 2 different custom installed DMS computers by this method ?
There different variants of loaders, if you are using ARC loader and switching between DSM models, there should not be any issue. DSM will detect previous model from hard drives and keeps the data intact while migrating.
Just a quick question, is this set up is safe to keep the files for long run as it is an unlicensed synology OS (no support from synology). Second, in case if the OS is crashed, can we able to restore the files from hard drive. Thanks

I generally don't recommend to host you critical data on this DSM, since this whole setup is dependent upon one developer for all future updates. But I don't believe you existing setup will stop working unless you have a hardware failure or you play around with the system file.
I have been using DSM on Synology's genuine hardware since 2011 and their software never crashed on me.
The scenario you are presenting is failure of hardware, other than your hard drive, in that case easiest option will be use another synology DSM to recover your data easily.
Recovering data off the drives is possible I guess, but will be tricky, especially if you are not comfortable with Linux and command line interface.

@@ThinkSmartHomethanks for your detailed response. I am wondering though this comes under GPL category, why still depends on loader file to boot the OS. Cant we direct download the DSM nd install?
Second, in future if the loader file is crashed or flash drive not working, how can we get updated loader file. I tried with xpenology nd other loader files but nothing worked as in this video. So more curious as depends on some developer for this case. Is this quite risk i suppose for reliability.
Third, my requirement is to build good reliable NAS with my own hardware of good configuration. So could u advice which OS should i prefer DSM or truenas or anything else for long run reliability nd without any risks. Pls advise.
can i run the DSM machine without the usb in it after the installation is completed?
It wont cause any issue while DSM is running but if your machine reboots, without bootloader USB it will not boot into DSM. So better to leave it in there.
Quick question. I got it to work. But AME was not working (it wanted me to sign in) so i tried changing the S/N. But now Arc DSM Mode is missing, and it just keeps going into config mode.

it gets stuck at the point where I have to give permission to erase 25 hdd then it says that disk formatting failed

there are non Synology driver added to Xpenology loaders for PCI device, not sure about the compatibility tho.

Happy to help, regarding Photos, it does work but not sure about face recognition as its depends on various factors. If you are really after this you can try with ARC Patch.

why do I always boot with a flash drive, when I remove it it doesn't work?
USB Stick / drive carries the Loader files, it has to boot from loader files to load the DSM. People also use SSD to flash the loader and boot it from there.

You should have Synology Hardware for that to work, legally. I don't use synology even services on my genuine Synology NAS. You might want to look at other services for external access, I have created a video on how to do that using cloudflare tunnels.

Sinology Services require a genuine serial number, that means you ll need a real Synology hardware.

Hi just saw your post, what I can recommend is Tailscale, install it on the NAS, install it on your phone/pc/tablet and everything can be connected in a mesh, it's very cool very easy to setup and totally free.

unfortunately didnt work: after install i get the arc loader, then: booting DSM..... This interface will not be operational.Wait a few minutes....
This means loader is already booted, use any other PC to access the IP address mentioned on the screen to setup the dsm.

Yes, some users have used one of their SSD for the loader and booted PC using that SSD but personally I don’t see a reason to dedicate an SSD for the pupose.

Hey, no it needs a LAN connection as wireless is not supported yet.
I have a HP proliant microserver gen10, the xpsynology setup goes well and I connect to it when we are in configuration (port:7681) but when it starts the s.o. (port:5000) it hangs after 2 seconds, can you help me? thanks.

I have DSM 7.1.1, how can i update to 7.2? I don't want to lose photos and files.
Which Loader are you using? I f you have followed any of my tutorials to build your loader previously, you can either build a new loader from scratch as per this tutorial or you can use update loader feature as explained in the video to update to loader to latest version or you must be at least on this version ARC 24.4.10 to update to 7.2.1 Update 5 which is the latest one.
If you follow above you shouldn't lose your data.

Sorry, can someone help me ? I had setup my old laptop for Synology dsm nas server and they work great , but it only about testing environment.Now i have want to make real nas like pc : motherboard with 6 hdd and 2 nvme , ryzen 2600 ,…, and i dont know does it works (which of these nas synology sever they will be , now on my laptop is some 4021xs ), or i must buy orginaly nas server configuration like synology ds1621+ (but i didint like configuration , it is very weak)

If looking to buy an old PC as package with good potential of expansion, I am using my old HP Z800 workstation and it supports the loader and DSM out of the box without any additional hardware drivers.
Of course if you are going to host your critical data on it you should go for Synology Hardware and use ARC Loader backed DSM for backups and snapshots.

AMD CPUs first tried each 10 times, but failed.
Is there a way to install this to a hard drive like when you install windows?
I believe there are work arounds to partition a drive and use for DSM. I have never tested it though. I guess DSM does kill drive for data when you'll perform a fresh install.

Hi, yes you can, that's one the the File Station features, where you can share a link or QR code to anyone for a file / folder on your NAS.

I had issues on hyperV with this. I prefer to run DSM on a barematel and use Synology’s Virtual Machine Manager to run VMs within DSM.

Yes it boots of the usb, so that usb stick should stay plugged in or else PC will not boot into DSM
@thezfunk if you have the possibility to boot from SSD if you have multiple drives/ssd, I sacrificed one small SSD and created the boot loader on that SSD. It is more reliable then a USB stick,

Yes, you’ll have to use the VM file where I downloaded the img file.
I finished to install the DSM. Then when I tried to access it from website from the orther computer. Instead of "New Sylonogy Station Detected", it said that "no drives detected in DS220+". Could you please help me to fix it?
What is you hardware and make model of your drives? do you have any onboard SATA controller? try setting it to AHCI Mode.

For me, the issue was I had only 1 ssd/harddisk attached to my system. Synology needs a separate ssh to install.

Quick connect either needs Synology hardware with SN or it required a patch from developer of this tutorial. I might create a video in that soon.

The hardware is not supported from Synology. That mean we can't use the QuickConnect. Is it correct?

Its similar, I am not sure which loader have you used but this one has (ARC) patch which can come in handy if want to use syno services, (I haven't tested it tho, I don't use Synology Services even on my genuine Synology NAS). Its all GUI based with lots off addons and most importantly its getting frequent updates from the developer.

I believe it is...there are several boot loader options, this one is for ARC.

I never setup anything specifically, I had upgraded my old HP Z800 (add CPUs and RAM) and tossed the loader on it, its working perfectly. I am using it as my Snapshot replicating backup server :) and for some other non critical DIY projects.
