- Let's perform some basic service on this car before running the engine for any longer. Set the ignition timing, change the 8-year-old oil and flush the coolant. All the while, keeping the cost low. At the end of the video I show a full cost breakdown of my Rolls-Royce ownership so far.
Good video, glad to see you working your way through and eliminating the various items that could be causing the engine running problems. All of these things would have needed doing anyway given the car had been standing for such a long time before you got.
I am doing exactly the same thing with my 73 Shadow .
Looking forward to seeing the next episode from you. Keep up the good work. 👍
Thanks! Good luck to you as well!
I think you have to use RR363 brake fluid as it has a lubricant so your system does not dry out and cause leaks. Ask Flying Spares
These videos are so good. Great detail, and explanations. My Shadow hasn't been run for about 3 years, and won't start. After watching your video I whacked the fuel pump and it started pumping! Thank you for that tip. Battery is turning up next week, and then I can see if it runs, but I do know rear hydraulic system is low pressure. I'm running a few months behind you and really appreciate the research and info you are giving. It has already helped :) Thank you.
Something else that I found on my engine whilst going through the similar process that you are doing , is that on the side of the engine oil filler neck is a gauze breather that often gets overlooked and clogs up. It’s not easy to spot at first but it’s definitely there and it’s worth removing it inspecting it and cleaning if necessary. It’s sandwiched between the oil filler neck and a hard breather pipe which goes into the top of the centre air intake body . It’s held in place by one bolt on the top and one bolt in the side below the pipe screwed into the oil filler neck . Both bolts need to be removed to draw the breather pipe back enough to prize out the gauze filler.
It can be cleaned out using cleaning fluids, or simply cleaning it with a blowtorch to burn any buildup out of it .
I am currently doing this with the one on my car .
You may have already done this but just in case you haven’t I thought I’d mention it.
All the best for now. 😎👍
Thanks, I'll check that out!
You might want to try changing all the leads to spark plugs as one last elimination before tackling the SUs. By the look of the oil, the leads may even be the originals!
You definitely need to use RR363 brake fluid, which is a castor oil formulation that keeps the hydraulic pumps lubricated. The Shadow is still the must hydraulically complex car ever built, based on aircraft hydraulics technology. You'll need to learn to bleed the system. You can make your own hydraulic lines or order from Flying Spares. Also, look into rebuilding the accumulator spheres. Get your hydraulics sorted out before it becomes an expensive problem.
A great video to watch. Roll on the next one.
You are so lucky to own such a beautiful car.🎉🎉
Thank you!
Welcome back! Missing your videos! Glad you are ok! Thought about you 2 weeks ago. I bought a 1968 Fixed-Head Coupe. Nice car, but has been sitting for about 15 years! Like you, I am going slowly. This is my first Rolls Royce that is not driveable! Hopefully, that will change soon!
Always fun to see what you are doing to your RR! Can’t wait to see your next upload!❤
Thank you for your reply!
I had one of these Shadow 1 in the eighties, nice to see you doing your own maintenance. look for Lucas parts for the electrics, coils, leads, ignition....also Ford Cortina Brake pads fit the Roller.
I ADD A CAN OF LUCUS ENGINE COMPLEAT TO MY GASS AT EVERY FILLUP, AND A CAN TO MY OIL EVERY SIX MONTHS WITH OIL CHANGE, IT'S A GREAT PRODUCT 👍
Very good video mate!!! Getting knowledge worth the deal...bless you!!!!
Finally another episode 🫡
Yup! It's been a while, eh? But it's finally here and actually the next one is almost ready too, final editing in progress :) Expect it within a few days.
Good work👍 she will be worth the effort
Hi try to check the speed of fuel delivery, time how long it takes to fill a container with the pump working, just because it works doesn't mean it works properly, there is 2 pumps, 1 might not be working properly or at all, disconnect hose from carb to test, the s.u.pump can be serviced, only when you have done this is when you touch the carbs, start by simply taking the dashpots off removing the pistons and cleaning and reassembling ,before you adjust any thing ,good luck, Kim shadow 2 long term owner, London
Thanks, will do! I'm pretty sure only 1 fuel pump is working currently, but it's providing enough flow for normal operation. After filming this video, I tackled the carbs and managed to get the engine running well, so that's why I think the fuel flow is sufficient. I'll post the video about the carbs shortly - it's already filmed, just need to edit it and post it.
I'm planning to rebuild the fuel pumps later, but as of now the car is drivable with the current pump(s), even though I risk this one failing and leaving me on the side of the road.
Verry clean work.i got one in the shop to a 77 first in trafik 88..i wonder where to order part?
On this timing gun, the value must be set to 0, so I don't know if you had the gun set correctly, because there is a 10-degree advance set from the time of drawing. according to the manual, the timing is set at 1300/25 degrees in my 78th at 1200/15 degrees. I would put castrol fork oil sae20w oil in the carburetor if you don't have original su oil and you probably already have a weakened spring in the carburetors, which means the engine has a lean mixture. But this is all just a guess :/
Yup, the timing gun was set to 0, as per my assumption that the timing mark on the flywheel has to align with the arrow without any additional offset in the timing light itself. As far as the oil in the suction chamber is concerned, the manual lists multiple options, so I went with the same oil as the engine itself: 20W50.
@@ClassicAutoLtd I don't know exactly what the timing setting is on your model, since I have a 78. Brabo has a Workshop manual for the Silver Shadow & Bentley T, it costs about 15 euros. Again, it's just my opinion, but also experience does not belong to the engine oil in the carburettor, because it changes its density according to the temperature, that is, the fuel and air supply will have a different value when cold and another when hot, in addition, the engine oil binds bubbles, which causes the piston to bounce carburetor and oil ejection. I wish you good luck
Hi I'm sure you know it's 1twin fuel pump not 2separate pumps, regards Kim
What kind coolant it takes
Please be very careful with what type of brake fluid you put
Into the RR. Most DoT3 brake fluid will ruin all the seals in the hydraulic/brake system. You are supposed to use RR363 brake fluid for these cars. I was told that Castrol brake fluid will work. It is much cheaper than the RR363 brake fluid, and I use it on my RR. Did u ever rebuild your carbs? If u did, I seem to have missed that video. Thanks for the upload. These cars really needs to be fully warmed up and driven for the engine to work properly. U can’t just run it for a few minutes, and expect the engine to run correctly!
Thanks for the note! Yup, I know about the DOT3 fluid and this was just temporary for testing the system (shown in part 3 of my project videos). I've already bought all the hydraulic hoses and rebuild kits for the suspension levelling system and I plan to do a full hydraulic rebuild shortly. When I do, I'll use the proper fluid.
You haven't missed the video about tuning the carbs - I haven't uploaded it yet :) But it's already done and filmed and is coming up shortly.
where did you get the oil filter kit from please
Hi
Today, I used your excellent guide to replace the oil in my restoration project (almost done) on my 1968 Rolls Royce Fixed-Head Coupe. More importantly, you have not released any videos in a long time, today being 11.19.24. Are you OK?
You most likely have a vacuum leak. What was the torque setting for the wheel nuts? They should be no more than 45-50 ftlbs. Any more will deform the nuts. If the wheels were mounted by a tire shop, I can guarantee you they are set way above 50 lbs.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
The price of that oil filter!!!
I don't agree with you on the off-road tyres: it would be absolutely fucking awesome on a Rolls Royce. I think there's an episode of Top Gear in which one of the hosts brings a Roller to Iceland or wherever with off-road tyres
That is verrryyy cheap for all those parts, i pay 8-10 times more for parts i boy in Holland and in the UK for my Corniche.
🤔 There is no such thing as a cheap Rolls_Royce. The most expensive car you can buy is a cheap Rolls_Royce !..
I guess we'll find out :) I'm keeping track of every single expense and will be presenting my progress and cost in every video.
That is what only certain types of people say. I've been buying and selling classic cars - well over 100 of them for 30 years and this simply isn't true. But it's great that so many people think it is because it leaves bargains for folks like us who can tell a cheap dog, from a cheap bargain. Don't put too much emphasis on sticker price, because price is no indicator of quality. Being able to know what you are buying whatever the sticker price is far less risky.
Nice job but you did not grease the front end and all other nipples
Thanks for the comment. Are you referring to greasing the suspension?
