Point of clarification 1: Wearing an orphaned tux jacket with a kilt - If you are wearing a kilt in a formal setting, it should be matched with a Prince Charlie coatee and waistcoat, not a tuxedo jacket. Point of clarification 2: Holmes wearing an Ulster Coat - Although the original illustrations by Sidney Paget did sometimes depict Holmes in an Ulster Coat, most TV and movie depictions of him have him in an Inverness Cape istead, the latter may be a better match for the person asking about capes.
I “stored” a bottle of Hai Karate fragrance from the 1970s at my parent’s many years ago. I went back 20 years later and the stuff (in a drawer) had gone bad. Needless to say, I was disappointed though I suspect having to “fight off” the female attention would’ve been more strenuous than my more mature self was prepared for….
Ralph Lauren have a high fashion take on the traditional black tux. They have a burgundy or deep blue or deep deep green velvet peak lapel or shawl lapel jacket. Paired with a beautiful multi color bow tie, this look fab. Dark trousers can be then matched.
Another suggestion for an orphaned Tuxedo jacket would be what we do here in Calgary, Alberta. Take some dark wash jeans, or even black, and pair them with cowboy boots. Doesn't work for everyone, but it can be fun for a country or less formal event.
Shaving: i use single edge from a company called Supply. They hsve ejector blades you can buy and tutorials on technique. I have a boar bristle brush to apply the cream (Taylor of Old Bond Cedarwood is a favorite).
We have a guy in my city who wears a bowler hat, it is the second person I've seen wearing one. I used to have a full cloak with hood and a military collage cape, I sold both as I didn't wear them much. The Ulster coat has in common with the Aussie Duster coat in that it case a cape added to a long coat.
Hoever I'm enjoying the whole video I just love the final salute. It's the signature move of this channel and I love it. Even though in my country, salute should be made just with hat on, never without. But we are not in army or police here.
Ash, good answer regarding blade brands for sensitive skin. I might add that using a pre-shave oil or soap and shaving with cold water can greatly reduce irritation and bumps. For great shaving advice I highly recommend the Razor Emporium or Shave Nation TH-cam channels.
Hi Ash. I’ve been a subscriber for some time now and greatly appreciate your advice, insights, and anecdotes. I hope I didn’t overstep my bounds by my comments. It’s just that I own and use a kilt and Ulster coat and have shaved my sensitive skin with a safety razor for years, so I just thought I’d add my two cents. Thanks for all your great and helpful videos and I look forward to seeing what you put up in the future!
I would say before trying to become a kilt aficionado, I would shop the rental places for odd trousers that might work and then one could attempt dyeing the garments the same shade of black together if one is more faded, etc.
any Regular length jacket will not work properly WITH a kilt and require modification that usually costs more and works worse than just buying a cheap polyester one or possibly even a real wool one. [and, again, if you're not going to Black Tie stuff several times in a year or getting married any time soon, you won't NEED a real wool one.]
Trews are designed to run very narrow and high-waisted in the old style, so this will not be cheap to get somebody who knows how to make them properly and then ye may neigh like the fit if go that route. And tartan cloth is about $70 / yd for starters, but if you really want to look the part.
Cloak: the Sherlock Holmes hunty ones won't have sleeves like the Civil War cavalry ones or something. They may also be a fairly heavy tweed, but then neigh the same wooly peacoat fabric exactly. Tailor could possibly modify a duffle coat easier than starting from scratch?
Excellent discussion, thanks. Any thoughts on umbrellas? It’s certainly that time of year. I find a folder really practical, but not as elegant as a full size. Then there is golf..
Allure is a lovely fragrance and a nice all day wear. Not tried the Sport version but the original is nice. Platinum by Chanel the Egoiste version is my second option currently. Great video cheers Ash.
It won't sound gentlemanly, but I found that the best shaving product is made for women - BiC Twin Lady - you can use it several times and the sharpness doesn't lose
Do not apply wax polish to an area you have just crème polished and not allowed to dry thoroughly. I have and it takes ages to polish out the dull granular texture it creates. Have a cup of tea and wait for it to dry!
Topic 1: Tuxedo Yes, there is an exception: when the dinner jacket is made of velvet, the trousers are typically still crafted from wool with the classic satin stripes. While purists might argue that this combination is slightly less formal, the overall look is striking and impactful, much like Le Chiffre’s black velvet dinner jacket in Casino Royale. Dear Ash, do you agree?
I think it is a personal choice. I personally opt for a belt in casual attire and would prefer side tabs (adjusters) on formal trousers. But I know that many chaps with a bit of girth, much prefer a pair of braces.
Ash, A long time fan of your fine channel. Thank you so much for all of your wise guidance through the years. I've a question which I hope you'll address because I'm at a loss. As a Canadian intentionally stylish guy I seek some form of hat which is both stylish and functional for Canadian winters. My Spring and Autumn snap brim fedoras don't cover the tops of my ears in Winter. In years past I've worn togues which keep me warm, but cannot be said to be stylish. Please, if you can, offer me more stylish cold weather hat alternatives. Respectfully, William P.
Sadly functionality trumps appearance in situations such as yours. I have been to Canada in winter and have always opted for a fur, trappers hat that fully covers the ears.
Ash, Can I pose a quiestion, as I would love to hear your take on the subject. Some years ago I joined a Freemasons lodge, I loved the environment, wearing a tux, formal dining and the fellowship of like minded men. Now we had one brother who would always adress someone by their surname (even though he knew their christian names) . Do you think this is a good thing, or potentially belittleing to the person being addressed?
Good question sir. I would not accept being addressed solely by my family name in such a manner. I think that this sets the tone of some sort of boarding school and falls outside the commonly followed practices of etiquette. If someone habitually addressed me as 'Jones', I think I would begin by pointing out to the gentleman in question that he is quite welcome to address me by my given name of 'Ashley'. If he failed to get the hint, I would ask that if he continued to wish to address me using only my family name, then I would be obliged if he would be so kind as to preface it with 'Mr', as I do not care to be addressed as 'Jones' in public, as I am not a private soldier being spoken to by a sergeant, nor am I an errant schoolboy being told off by matron. If this was unsuccessful, I would invite him to join me on the field of satisfaction, from which only one of us would would emerge with our reputations intact. That should work!
Ash, apologies if you have already answered this question, I have not had the priviledge of watching all of your videos yet but would appreciate your thoughts on this. I have a semi long (approximately 4-5 centimeters past my chin line) and thick beard which my wife is very fond of. She would be very upset were I to shave it off, but I see your videos regarding quality shaving products and I feel as if I will never acheive true Chap Nirvana until I join the ranks of the clean shaven gentlemen. How do you feel about beards? Do you think one can don a big, thick beard and still consider himself a chap or even an aspiring chap?
Beards are fine sir, often seen as a sign of manhood in more primitive societies. Many previous kings and emperors have sported fine beards, so you are in good company.
Hello Ash, hello again from Germany! Ash, it would be interesting, to hear your philosophical 😂 opinion about the SIGMA male. How well is it going along with the idea of being a chap !? 😊👍
Question: I turn 30 years old next year and I'm looking to buy myself my first 'luxury' watch. I currently have a few 'affordable' watches, such as a Seiko SPB143 and a Seiko SARB035, which I wore on my wedding day this year. Which watch would you recommend as a watch to keep for a lifetime, at a price point of £3000/£5000? I'm currently looking at a few models from the Tudor Black Bay range, an Omega Seamaster300, or potentially stretching to a Rolex OP36. I'd love to hear your thoughts. P.S. love the content you bring (especially watch related!)
Unfortunately kilt jackets are shorter than dinner jackets so as to show off more of the kilt. Thus wearing a regular dinner jacket with a kilt would look peculiar.
it always look odd to me every time i see a teenager or guy in urly 20is , dress with suite or classic style , like yee is nice and cool , but is something out of place ,

I remember that stuff and trust me the female attention of today would NOT be a problem. I suspect that it would clear the room.
😅
Nice! I am fortunate enough to have an original 1974 bottle Givenchy gentleman
Cannot have been the real thing, mate. It would survive an asteroid strike, if I remember the smell.😊
Well I would not fight off the lovely Valerie Leon if she took a fancy to me, star of the advert, and in two Bond films.😊

The Beadles at the Burlington Arcade wear cloaks in cooler months.
Don‘t know who the Beadles are but the real Beatles wore cloaks in one of their movies…probably Help.

A cloak can still be worn as a raincoat, it is called a poncho. Sorry the Ulster overcoat looks very costumey, maybe more so than a cloak.
This man loves to marry
In America we call Ulster overcoats Inverness overcoats. I got mine from the Historical Emporium online and then had it tailored.
Although quite similar, they are different garments.
