- Dashcam video as I drove on the Musical Road in Lancaster, CA. The road has grooves or rumble strips engineered so that when you drive over them, they produce the sound of music under your tires. This tune is apparently from a portion of the William Tell Overture, the theme song for the Lone Ranger.
It's a bit of a stretch, but you can kind of hear it. And regardless, it's pretty cool. One of the few roads of its type in the world.
They should hire the hungarians who make an actual musical Road in tune..
And only requires one wheel

I remember hearing about this. The reason it sounds f*cked is because when the contractors got instructions for the project, they were given a distance between each little bump to get the right pitch. What they didn't get, was instructions clarifying that this distance was to be measured from the center of each bump, not the edge. So they're all spaced slightly further apart than they should be
They should’ve hired carpenters to do the job. Talkin‘ ‘bout 16“OC here.

For those still wondering, the road had a construction error meaning every note got distorted by a constant amount. Tom Scott has a very good video on it.
I'd be more surprised if Tom Scott hadn't done a video of it.

Incorrect. Each space between each line was increased by a constant amount. The higher notes have a higher frequency, therefore distorted by a higher amount.

My wife's dad and his wife live in the area, and I've been over that road as well on the way to the airport (he used to own a plane out there). Kinda sad they couldn't calculate a recognizable Western scale for this piece. It's like Rossini was having a really bad day, in a minor key, with instruments out of tune. Oh, well - it's amusing at least.

It very much is poorly tuned. What happened was when they were building the road, they got the calculations for the gaps wrong.

The problem was actually due to the miscommunication between a mathematician and the engineers who built it. We can guess which ones fucked up...

It would be funny if a road that was 50 mph, played the song “I can’t drive 55” by Sammy Hagar.
The thing is, when searching for the right frequency, the engineers accounted for the space in between the little bumps, but not for the size of the bumps themselves. Therefore, if it was shrunk to a 8th of a mile instead of a quarter, or if the speed was about 100mph, it should sound as intended lol a 12 year old failure

Tom Scott did a video of this and there essentially was a mix-up in communication. The grooves should be 4" apart center-to-center but instead, they are 4" apart edge-to-edge.

The road was built for a Honda Civic commercial. The City decided to keep it. Yes, it's a car jingle.

They. Messed the road up can’t remember exactly but I’m pretty sure they measured from the back side of one groove to the front of another where it should’ve been from back to back or something like that but either way it is messed up and just embodies the state of California

Lancaster resident all my life - For anyone wondering - they had a version of this a few miles away from this one that was actually perfect at 55 mph but it was next to a neighborhood that hated it. Long story short this one was built wonky and the only way to get the proper result is to go about 90!

its because they didn't consider that the grooves in the road count for distance as well so the spacing of the grooves is off. the measured the grooves from end to end, not center to center
so many people drive on that road,and the bumps ware out,so i imagine it was in perfect tune when it was first made

I think the size of the tires determines the tone or pitch of the sound. Small car tires spin faster than truck tires, so it'll sound way different depending on your vehicle
