Nice recap of memory, you are right! King Albert of Belgium refused to surrender, even when he only had about five percent of Belgium left to command. So, he decided to flood the area to prevent it from falling into German hands. Then, he fought shoulder to shoulder with his men, and even had his 12-year-old son at the front, delivering messages.
And this is why a royal/ruling family or dynasty can make or break a country VERY effectively. A symbol that can talk to you, empathise with you and more is very powerful. I don't think many people would want to become a symbol like that if they truly understood it isn't all glitz and glam and money, but a lot of sacrifices to privacy, personal freedoms and more. Few (chosen) leaders today would do it because they grew up as individuals, as private citizens. They're few but not nonexistent.
Sabaton is the only band that can get a crowd from a country to sing along and cheer about another country's military. ("Ghost Division" in Poland) Truley an epic band.
Now we'll be waiting for "Resist and Bite" btw they have a really cool history channel where they go into more historical explanations and some behind the scenes of righting the songs ;)
Albert I the soldier King, one of the last kings to lead a command directly. Then Leopold III, married to Astrid. Baduin and then Albert II before Philippe The Germans tried to sneak up around the French defence Maginot line and come down in their back by passning through Belgian territory. It was important that they didn't reach the North Sea to accomplish this and Albert stopped them. His queen Elizabeth worked as a nurse in the military hospitals during the war.
Well, almost. The Maginot Line was built after ww1, to avoid trench warfare and to counter the tanks. Which, you know, kind of worked, no one ever crossed the Maginot, and none passed Verdun
Maginot Line didn't exist until post-WWI. But France had labyrinth of fortifications built around the borders near the German borders. Which was why German High Command wants to go around the fortifications through Belgium. Clause Von Clausewitz also wrote in his On War works that the way to defeat France is through Belgium.
I'm impressed by your reconnection. Your analysis was pretty accurate. I got goosebumps, too, while watching it, and I'm not from Belgium. But that's one of the best things about Sabaton. They can connect people and let them feel so many emotions regardless of where they come from.
