Smilodon (name meaning "Knife Tooth"), also called the Saber-Toothed Cat as well as incorrectly once called the Saber-Toothed Tiger, is a genus of saber-toothed Felidae that originated during the Early Pleistocene epoch in what is now North and South America. Widely known for being the most famous prehistoric cat, this is unquestionably one of the most well-known prehistoric animals in the world.
As one of the top predators of the Ice Age, Smilodon was a successful and powerful hunter. Similar to modern lions, Smilodon lived in family groups called prides. The females were responsible for 90% of the hunting, while the males engaged in intra-group fighting. The pride was always led by a dominant male. When hunting, the females dispersed around the prey, waiting for the lead female to make the first move. Once they selected a victim, they would pounce ontop, holding it down together with their strength and make the kill.
Smilodon could reach speeds of nearly 40 miles per hour, but only over short distances. What makes Smilodon easily identifiable are its long saber teeth, which measure 7 to 12 inches in length. These teeth were highly effective weapons for capturing and killing prey.
