The correct way to mulch a tree

- Just say no to mulch volcanoes 🌋 That terrible practice causes a lot of damage to trees. Here are the top tips from Ag extension about mulching:
Mulch out, not up! No deeper than the heel of your hand, generally 2-4 inches.
Back off from the trunk! Keep all mulch away from the trunk of the tree, allowing the root flare to show just above ground level.

A lot of lawn services here in VA are very good @ making mulch volcanoes & committing crape murder, especially the municipal ones. Seems to be all you see anymore along roadsides & parking lots. It's no wonder so many home owners think that's how it's supposed to be done.
Personally, I'm disabled & so let my lawn service mow for me, but I do my own pruning &, w/ the help of a dear friend, mulching--it just takes me a wee bit longer to get it done. 😊

_Hallelujah sister!_ Unfortunately almost 100% of new tree stock today arrives from nursery with trunk already too deep in root ball. And without a trunk flare excavation back to trees original birth grade before permanently installing.There is no such thing as beneficially or properly mulching.

My newly planted trees has grass and weeds growing at the base. I'm going to add mulch as you show. But before I add mulch do I need to clear the area of weeds and grass? Should I add "Landscape Fabric" before I add the mulch?
Never ever add landscape fabric!! Just hand weed and mulch

Sorry I missed this. I’m not sure there is a difference. Most mulched are made from tree bark. Triple shred hardwood is made from oaks, maples, and other deciduous hardwood tree. In contrast Pine bark is made from pine trees.
The exception is ground leaves which are ideal but rarely available for sale.

Does mulching a mature tree really benefit the tree if it only covers like 25-50% of the drip line?
It still helps retain moisture and reduce weed competition, so yes it does benefit a mature tree.
It's any tree's fine feeder root system, only some 2-3 inches below soil surface, which benefits most from mulch. And yes, the great majority of older trees young feeder roots hang out along drip line and not so much within proximity of trunk.
This is why proper mulching instructions suggest enlarging outer circumference each time mulch reapplied. Thus, larger area of mulch coverage surrounding older trees to start with, more outbound extending fibrous feeder roots benefit.
Failure occurs when retaining the same area of mulch coverage, instead only building higher by applying too much on top of already too much. This does result in forcing older tree to begin prolifically producing many new fine feeder roots in direct proximity to trunk again, as had in juvenile years. But as they enlarge, they may restrict trunk growth.

Preventing mulch against the trunk is only half the required solution. As the entire surrounding grade must be flattened as well. Hello from someone who excavates some dozen trees per week. By performing trunk flare excavation bringing tree back to its original birth grade.
If installing a planting bed, make sure to install perennials. Rather than annuals that have to be redug in every year, which also causes unnecessary accumulation of potting material.
